AW: Ultrasound Thread!

  • I ended up having an unplanned ultrasound today after falling flat on my face. I think my elbow and knee took most, if not all, of the blow but I couldn’t help worrying the baby was hurt someway. So they had me come in and the tech was super hard to read for clues about it what she was seeing was good or bad. Just focused on telling me there was a strong heartbeat when I asked, but almost like she was saying it to avoid talking about other observations. She left, presumably to have the doctor look at the images but without explanation, and came back and told me I was all set. Very uninformative. Wouldn’t give me a picture, or tell me if it’s a boy or girl since my anatomy scan is next week. They sent me on my way and I read the report in my online med record and everything (heart beat, placenta and cervix) sounds fine. I also think this probably gets billed differently than a full ultrasound appt so they ONLY will tell you about heart beat, checking that the placenta is intact, and that my cervix is not dialated- the main concerns with a fall. I just got the feeling she was trying not to say too much, which leaves me worried I’m in for some terrible surprise next week at the 20w anatomy scan. I wonder if theyd tell me if there was something unrelated to the fall going on in there.

i get they are probably not allowed to say much since they aren’t an MD, but in my last 2 I at least felt ease from them that everything was good.

anyone else have ultrasound techs that leave you feeling this way?
  • @rabtaido1214 hope you and baby are doing okay! Will keep you in my thoughts and hope the anatomy scan goes well for you!
  • @rabtaido1214 if there was something obviously wrong at a minimum they would have see your OB today, who would tell you what was going on. They wouldn’t leave you in the dark about it.

  • @rabtaido1214 - That really sucks.  I’m sorry you are having to deal with this.
  • @rabtaido1214 I'm sorry you fell and its worrying you. I wouldn't stress too much. There could be any number of reasons they didn't say much. If there was any major concerns that they could tell, I'm sure the Dr would be in contact.

    @rabtaido1214 Fx everything is ok!
  • @momtobx2 how does that happen?
  • @cdepperschmidt they told us a boy when it was still early, approximately 12 weeks. We think she just saw the nub and said hey! A boy. But there was no boy last night! Lol
  • Lol congrats! I’m surprised anyone would try to label the sex at 12 weeks via US.
  • With DD I had an ultrasound at 16 weeks where they told me she was a boy. A month later I had my anatomy scan and the first thing the tech said was "Very obviously a girl."

  • @rabtaido1214 we had scare early in my pregnancy and the ER tech said she wasn't allowed to tell us anything about what was on the screen, show us anything or even talk about it. It's probably some hospital rule.

  • @wendylattes thanks for the reassurance. My logical self figures that was the case, but logic is so overrated these days and hard to find in my head! It helps to hear it from someone else!
  • @wendylattes @rabtaido1214 Yep, I'm pretty sure US techs are not allowed to say anything about what's on the screen, because they aren't the radiologist/whatever they are called. I've had a lot of US, x-rays, MRIs, CTs, etc. in my day, and they've almost never said anything to me. When I went to the ER at 5w-ish for this pregnancy, the tech actually said quite a bit about what was going on ("your IUD is a little low" "well, I guess it's too early to see much..." etc, that kind of thing). I'm not sure it made me feel any better knowing those details, because they weren't really complete. Kind of left me with more questions. I felt a lot better when my doctor called me with the report and I was able to view the report online.
  • Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the insight and similar experiences you’ve shared!
  • I was just about to say the same thing- there will be alot of little boys running around soon. Cant wait to meet my lil man.
  • Anatomy scan. 19+2. They think baby isn’t a boy still, but we did not get a clear look. I have to go back for a repeat scan next month since they weren’t able to see everything they needed to see.
  •  Has anyone else had this finding?
My SIL had this on her AS with my niece.  Everything resolved before delivery and my Niece is now a brilliant and perfect 7 year old.  I am a worrier too, so I get your anxiety.  But try and follow the doctor's lead.  If it was concerning they would have been concerned.

    Hugs!
