FTM Questions for STM+ - November

Re: FTM Questions for STM+ - November

  • My mom had 3 kids: one early, one on the due date, and one late.  So not a whole lot of intel to gather from her.

Anyone having strong guesses as to whether they will go early or late?  After being convinced for the first 30 weeks that I'd go after my due date and push it to my induction date, since about week 30 I've been convinced that I'm going to go early.  Not like super early (I mean, I'm 35 weeks now so obviously it won't be super early).  But I'm convinced she'll come like week 38 or 39.  I don't entirely know why either.

  • @tennis11785 I initially thought I'd be early (probably because I went at 31 weeks with the twins), but i haven't had a single contraction yet or leaking or any other indication that I would go early.  Either my body is doing much better with one and/or the combination of the progesterone shots are helping.  I have one more shot left this Thursday, so we'll see how things go after that.  I am starting to think I will go right up to my scheduled C on Dec. 8.  Time will tell!

@Tennis11785 I will be shocked if I make it to my RCS date.  I've been having a ton contractions for over a week, and a lot of pressure.   I know ultimately that may mean nothing but I'm curious if I have progressed at all and that's the only reason I'm looking forward to my internal check Wednesday.  With DS1, I was not dilated at all at the start of my induction and had no contractions until pitocin started.

    Vaporizer or humidifier for nursery?
Most Vick’s brands are technically both these days. Our humidifier has a “high” mode that the mist is visible. You can also use scented pads in it (Vick’s brand menthol pad things that help diffuse the air i guess). Ours is also a night light!

  • Thank you @splsmama2016 my mom keeps asking if I bought one yet and there are so many to choose from. What’s the purpose of it for the baby? If she gets congested? Or from the heat in the house?
  • @ShyTonia they are really helpful when LO is congested - which I am sure will happen no matter how much handwashing I make people do.
  • @Tennis11785 everyone (my midwives, mom, friends) is convinced I'll go early. I would *like* to go early, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up! DH's mom arrives on the 9th AM so if she could come that evening/night that would be perfect :D (due date is the 13th) DH is convinced she will arrive on his birthday, the 14th lol

  • @ShyTonia yes, it’s for the dryness in the air and to help when babe gets congested.

Cant remember of i answered and im
on the iPad and can’t easily check lol. I’m either going to go early or late. Doubt I’ll go close to on time.

  • I wish this one would come around 38 weeks. Because of my GD, he won't get much time to come on his own before induction. With my first, my body wasn't ready AT ALL for delivery so it took days and tons of medical intervention to get her out. I'd love to be at least a little ready this time but once again i get the feeling that nothing is happening.
  • So I had a surprise baby shower at work today which was amazing. I have to organize and start going through everything. Right now everything is in bags because we are trying to buy a home. Anyways how many diapers will I need in different sizes? Right now baby is measuring 6 pounds 3 oz. I still 5 week away from due date so I'm not thinking this is going to be a small baby. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I’d have a small UNOPENED pack of newborns and a case of size 1’s in hand. DD1 was 8lbs when she was born, but was in nb diapers for almost 8 weeks. Lol.

  • @splsmama2016 thanks.
It's looking like I will have a lot of exchanges to do. If I don't have gift receipts how and where can I exchange.
  • @ridedatide honestly, I don't think there's anyway to guess!! My baby girl had thick thighs and went up to 3s fast! But who knows with this one. I was gifted a lot of diapers at my shower so I am not opening them until I know.
  • @ridedatide hold on to them. Most people tend to pick them up at target, Walmart, BRU or BBB. The store will scan them and if they’re not from that store, they’ll let you know

  • @ridedatide Most big name stores have bar codes scanners in their apps. That’s what I used before trying to return things with out receipts. It was so helpful and I only made a one trip.
  • Ok so might seem like a silly question but do people still use baby powder? I know about the whole talc issue with J&J but I registered for the anti monkey butt powder for my showers and oddly enough I did not get any... IDK I feel like I've been living under a rock I guess. If you don't use it, do you only use cream?
  • @ridedatide I have never used baby powder for DS1 and he's 4 now.  I was told that it wasn't good for babies to breathe in so I just never bought it but I don't think I ever really could have used it either.

  • @ridedatide I've never used powder on DD...I feel like I'll just make a mess. I use Bordeaux Butt Paste and it works reallllly well (and the natural formula has no odor, unlike Desitin...)I was given one of those diaper cream spatulas that everyone laughs at. It turned out to be one of the best things ever.
  • @Skcobb I totally wanted to get one of those and registered for it but my SIL literally laughed at me about it.  I always hear when ever someone gets one they love it!  I. Am. Getting. One. Lol
  • @Skcobb thanks. Yes I've seen them. I was not sure what to think but I can see how it can save you from washing your hands a thousand times. I actually asked and received a few tubes of the Bordeaux Butt Paste natural so im excited to use that now. Good to note on the powder. I guess ill just hold off for now and see how it goes. :) Thanks for all of the help guys.
  • I thought of 2 questions in the middle of the night and didn't want to wake myself up further by signing on, but now I can only remember the stupid(er) question. Hopefully I'll remember the other and be back later today. But for now...

Am I supposed to bring my pump to l&d with me? Obviously I know the hospital has plenty of pumps, but do they expect me to bring mine so I can get familiar with it before I head home, or is it a "just use ours and figure yours out on your own" deal? I'd hate to assume and be wrong either way.

  • @djd0404 I did not bring my pump and did not pump in the hospital. If your baby ends up in NICU, you may need to pump; otherwise, they recommend you don't start pumping until baby is a few weeks old and breastfeeding is well-established. If you do need to pump, the hospital pumps will probably work better than the one you have, and you can always send DH home to get it if you really want yours.

  • @djd0404 I didn't bring my pump with me but we had latch issues so the LC did encourage me to pump while in the hospital. I used their pumps which kinda spoiled me a bit since they worked so well.

Your hospital will have hospital grade pumps for you to use if you need to pump.

  • Some friends who are smaller than me.. gave me some nursing bras that are HUGE (like DD, DDD.. I'm still a C36).. They don't fit me now. I'm due 12/25. Should I keep them, will I fit in them? Or should I pass them along as my cousin has a friend who is now expecting and could use some clothes..
  • I was wondering if I need to wash the car seat and stroller before use? We bought them new.

Also any recommendations on nursing bras? I know it’s late but I just remembered that it was the 1 thing I forgot to buy
  • @Yodalsgreen I personally did not wash the car seat or stroller before use with DS1 and won't with this one either. Also, the straps on most car seats just as FYI, are fire resisistant and from what I remember with DS1 shouldn't be washed but there should be instructions in the manual about that Bc inevitably LO will spit up on them at some point.

  • Okay, my STM+ question of the day... have you found a good sterilizer that works for lots of different brands of bottles & pump parts? Any brands or models that you've especially loved or hated? I see several on Amazon in the $50-$100 range, but I don't know one from another in terms of quality or practicality and the reviews aren't giving me a lot of confidence.

And yes, I know you don't have to have a sterilizer, you can just use boiling water... but I'll admit that I'm kind of a fan of specialty gadgets, and I'm not sure I'll trust that the stuff is properly "sterilized" with a pot of boiling water (or that I won't accidentally melt anything).

  • @djd0404 I’ve posted this a few times before and I know several moms love them, but the Madela micro-steam bags are great for sterilizing bottles and pump parts. Each bag is good for 20 uses. You put all washed parts (minus the tubing) in the bag, a bit of water, and microwave for 2 min.
  • @sjis Oh my gosh, I completely forgot about the steam bags, they're sitting alongside all my breastfeeding stuff on the changing table (clearing that off is yet another thing To Do before baby arrives). I'll have to check out the size of the bags, I'm picturing them as tiny, but that's probably just because of the size of the box they came in. That would certainly be a nice way to save ~$60. :)
