What are the thoughts on drinking soda (particularly coke)? I try not to drink it as much as possible (even before getting KU) but I have been really craving the sugar and caffeine at times. I feel like I'm drinking poison though.
@JJMNO1616 I'm not worried about the caffeine so much as the nutritional content -- like you, I try not to ever drink it. When I'm pregnant I'll let myself have ONE coke if we're at a restaurant and I'm craving it big time, otherwise I stay away. I don't even want it in the house -- it's like crack!
ETA: the Coke-at-a-restaurant thing has always been a savior for me around 15ish weeks and the days-long headaches hit. An ice cold Coke seems to do the trick for me!
@viggie17 pretty much anything you google will have some sort of warning about consumption during pregnancy. Like, even most prenatal vitamin ingredients are on the category B list of drugs to possibly avoid during pregnancy. It's pretty much a "we don't want to be sued by anyone so we're gonna put EVERYTHING on the CAUTION list" thing.
And yeah, FTM here but I've been breaking all the rules and I have zero anxiety about it. I ate raw sushi a couple times last week, I still eat deli meat, and consume 200-400 mg of caffeine per day. The only things I am actually avoiding are rare beef (which is still probably overly cautious but isn't difficult for me to avoid), and more than 1-2 servings of high-mercury fish per week. And I'll be having the occasional glass of wine after the 1st trimester.
If you pay attention to the actual legitimate research (and not b*mp articles, baby center, etc) you'll find that most pregnancy precautions are bullshit.
@kmalls yes! Sorry if I freaked anyone out - I was visiting family for a week out of state so I took a bump break because mobile is the actual worst for me
Here's a rulebreaking question: thoughts on hot tubs in the first tri? I avoided them last time around because I was told the baby can get too hot and go into distress or something. I'm going on vacation this weekend and would love to indulge in some hot tub action if I can't have wine....
@mountainsmama from what I've read, they want you to limit it to under 10 min. I know a bigger concern is a drastic and quick core temperature difference. I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum, and I take ice baths at least once a week. I haven't stopped yet because my core temperature does not drop drastically.
I take hot baths. Can't give them up. And I'll take tylenol. Other than that, I stick to the rules. I'd rather get my caffeine in chocolate than coffee.
RIP Dr. Irving Fishman - 10/1/19-7/25/10 - thank you for holding on for me. You made my wedding day complete.
@mountainsmama - yeah, hot tubs are generally out, along with saunas and hot yoga. For me, the hot yoga is the thing that I'm most sad to give up, because it's my regular workout
I'll indulge in some wine past first-tri, and I still eat deli meat (although usually cooked). I pushed back on my OB about the sushi thing after reading Emily's book, and she still said no, but I'll probably eat it anyway and just avoid the tuna.
I wish I could drink more coffee right now, but I just don't want any! wahh!
@mountainsmama hot tubs are a legitimate restriction. Raising your core temp over 102 is deadly to the fetus. That's why expecting women with fevers are a huge medical emergency.

I'm not sure this is entirely accurate. From the research I've seen, raising your core temp to 101< increases the risk of neural tube defects in the first trimester, but isn't considered deadly nor a huge medical emergency.
I am, however, still avoiding hot tubs and baths. Possible neural tube defects is enough to stop me from doing it!
Does the hot tub thing really matter if the hot tub is only set to 99° though? That's what my parents keep theirs at in the summer so it's not too hot to enjoy on a cooler summer evening.

I do think baths are not the same as a hot tub. A hot tub has a sustained high temp. A bath is cooling down immediately once you stop adding hot water, and if you have a bathroom that runs freezing, like I do, this means hot baths turn lukewarm to cold in under 10 minutes. Gimme all the baths.

@bettyvonsomethingstein yes! to the baths! I try not to run it too hot but the baths have even helped with the morning sickness some days for me, so I'm not giving them up

Our research doesn't agree then. Everything I have run across states that 103 is the threshold for fetal death and abortion during first tri (it is less fatal in later trimesters). Even if running that high ONLY comes with neural tube defects, that is unacceptable to me. There is also a huge difference between a regular bath spiking your temp momentarily, and sustaining high temps with either a fever or hot-tubbing.
If you doubt the seriousness of it, ask your OB what you should do of you get a fever. Your answer will be "If it is above 102, seek immediate emergency care."
Haven't been a rule breaker so far. I had an occasional glass of wine last pregnancy (I think after 5 months was my first and it was only a few times) I do cooked sushi and cooked deli meat occasionally. I did half-caf or decaf last pregnancy but coffee hasn't sounded good so I just cut it cold turkey. I'm not incredibly mindful of my heart rate during exercise. I plan to talk with my OB about it and their concerns otherwise.
@saralee797-2 I love you And pre-pregnancy I would totally agree with you. But, I'm hoping that after 12+ weeks of sobriety 1 glass of wine will be nice and relaxing.
@saralee797-2 prior to baby1 1 glass of wine was pointless. After 9 months of no alcohol and several months of little sleep, one glass of wine is enough to make me tipsy!
@saralee797-2 I agree it's pointless, lol. Though I'm not a wine drinker...I'm all about the captain. Can't wait to have some again (not til after baby of course)
Y'all I am evacuated to a tiny hotel room with my three kids, my grumpy/sick pregnant ass and my husband, who is working remotely. Our house is likely effed. I am eying up booze around me like

I am so sorry . You do need a drink. I hope your house is ok.
I'm a beer girl! Haven't had a beer of my own since before embryo transfer, but have maybe 3-5 times had a little taste (a teaspoon or less lol)of a beer H was drinking. Last Friday I made a chicken recipe with a beer, and almost puked pouring it into the crockpot. Doesn't even sound good right now. Hopefully that comes back for me
Lol @lindsye thats my idea of indulgence right now. Early bedtimes and naps. I keep saying I'm just going to "rest my eyes" at 7 pm and not getting up!

@lindsye Sorry to hear about your house. Do you live in Houston or elsewhere? We have a house down in Port Aransas that luckily had minimal damage. We have family in the Bay City area that had to evacuate. So many displaced people. It hurts my heart. Please reach out if there is anything I can do for you!
Oh thank you for the kind words, @scuba_chic. We are in Houston area. We are planning to go back to our house tomorrow and see the extent of the damage. I do know a few people with ruined homes who are due with babies very soon, and that's something I am very grateful for - we will at least have plenty of time to get everything fixed before baby arrives.
