NIPT

Re: NIPT

I had mine done yesterday. They told me it would take two weeks, but this giving me hope that it won't be that long! They probably just don't want patients calling them every day looking for results.

Mine was two vials but I did the gender was also and I assumed that's why. My first prenatal appt they took like 6-7 vials. It didn't make me sick or anything it just felt like I'd be there forever bc it was going so slow! I'm sure that would be fine to do both!

I did both NIPT and my prenatal blood panel at the same time yesterday and they took about 6 vials I think. It wasn't too bad, I was mostly worried because I didn't think I'd be able to get any food down beforehand and didn't want to get woozy, but I managed to eat a sandwich on the way to the lab. Now we wait!

Is anyone else thinking of not having this testing done? I know it seems like "why read this thread if you don't think you want it?", but I'm just reading for learning more info. Maybe I'm mistaken, but doesn't this just tell you your risk and not a conclusive yes or no for any diseases or birth defects? I mean if my insurance ends up covering it I might do it, but if they don't it doesn't really seem like useful info I'd pay for. Like I don't really want to know my baby's risk for x,y,or z disorders are 1/10 or 1/1000. I think I only really want to know anything if it's a for sure diagnosis. Even if that's not until baby is born. I don't see why I should worry myself over a high or low chance of something if I'm still not even sure the baby has it.

Is this a crazy or uncommon attitude or is it pretty normal too? Just curious being a FTM and seeing that everyone (in this thread at least) gets it done. Is it really everyone pretty much does this testing or more like 50/50?
  • Options
@alice0218 Yep, it just tells risk, but can lead you in the right direction for certain diagnostic tests in different cases I think, which makes it worthwhile to a lot of people. But you're right, it's up to you whether you feel like you want/need to know at this point. I think it's pretty common to not want to do it, and that's fine. It can definitely add a lot of worry that may later prove unnecessary. On the flip side, I personally feel more secure knowing risk this early because I need a lot of time to process and research when I get medical news. So if there was a risk I would like to know early just to process and prepare for the possibility of some special need or hard news later on. Also, my OB wants it because I've had *tw* 4 early losses and we were never able to get genetic tests on those babies to figure out if there was a recurring problem genetically. So all information is helpful information for us!

@alice0218 I have never done this or the first trimester ultrasound for screening of genetic disorders. These caused way too much unneeded stress for my sister and I refuse to do that to myself.

@smorzandoj, @mamaof5already, @winnie1122 thank you for your opinion and reply and thank you @soulcupcake for taking the time to go into so much detail and give your experience. Honestly, like I said I'm just reading to learn information and I've had to google most of what you said :D. I haven't even had my first appointment yet (I know it's kind of late but that's how their availability was), probably why I'm trying to learn as much as I can from the internet since it's my first pregnancy and I don't really know what anything is, but trying to figure it out. So your responses have all been super helpful. My first appointment is next week at 10 +3 weeks so I'll ask my doctor what she wants to have done and see what insurance covers. I have no problem getting it even if it's not conclusive if insurance covers it, I just didn't understand if it's normal to skip or not or if anyone chooses to skip it if your insurance doesn't cover. Plus just hearing more about it was useful.

I decided on it last time bc my doctor noticed something on an ultrasound and I could tell she really wanted me to do it without just coming out and saying it. He was fine. Since then, I learned that the more advanced testing can pick up more than the regular prenatal testing. I wanted it done just for the heads up on if there could be something wrong. Like pp said, so that you could get in touch with specialists ahead of time. I'm not sure how far into the testing process I would go, as there are risks with an amino, and I also would never terminate a pregnancy, but I felt more comfortable knowing and not being surprised. It's all up to you and your preference. This is my sixth pregnancy and this is only the second time I've opted for the testing. ❤️

We did chromosomal and genetic testing on our embryo, too.  The CRNP I saw at my first appt suggested we do NIPT and I wasn't nervous about it until I went in for my NT scan today.  The scan looked normal, but when the Dr. came in to talk to us about it afterwards, she suggested we meet with a genetic counselor and think about more invasive testing, not because of what she saw on the scan, but because of my age (I'm 41).  It became clear that, although she knew we did IVF, she didn't look closely at the chart to see that we did all of the testing and presented information in a way that caused a lot of unnecessary anxiety.  Regardless, we did the blood work and now we wait...

Has anyone has more than 1 blood draw? I don't remember doing but one last time, but this morning they called and said all my results so far were normal and that it's a girl and with the next blood draw they would give me my remaining results. I was like, uh ok. I hadnt heard that but after going through it all with the nurse she said it was a two part test.

@mpp06 I had to have blood drawn twice for Harmony, super fun, but not for that reason. Mine was cuz there wasn't enough fetal fluid or whatever in the first one. Which test did you get?

Could it be that you are also having the test that checks I find you are a carrier for common genetic disorders? I know that that one was offered to me as well. I can't think of what it is called or if an additional blood test would be needed for it.

Can I please rant for a moment because I am so upset. I spoke about this in other threads, but I had a truly horrible experience at my initial OB GYN appt (over an hour wait, rude dr. wrong tests ordered, so many other things). I decided to switch to a wonderful midwife, but at that initial appt they drew my blood for the Harmony test even though I was only 9w5d. It took over 20 min to draw the blood in the first place because she hadn't placed the needle correctly and was just sitting there staring dumbly at the vial not filling and like wiggling the needle in my arm. They told me a week to two weeks for results. I call after two weeks and they say the lab is backed up and that I will get results in the next 3 days. I ask if the test was taken to early and she just repeats the same line she gave me about the lab. I call today and they FINALLY tell me the lab had cancelled my test which is why they hadn't gotten results because IT WAS TOO EARLY, yet still no one thought to let me know, I had to call. Additionally when they ordered my NT scan they did it without blood because of the Harmony test they did, but luckily my new midwife asked for blood or I would have had no testing at all. I know that none of this is essential testing and I will have an early 16w anatomy scan, but I am just so frustrated with how this office treats their patients! Every interaction I have had with them has left me in frustrated tears.

That is horrible @MrsJ2410!!!  You have every right to be upset.

My doctor wouldn't do those tests before 11w and I had to wait until 12 bc when they tried the NT scan at 11w the baby wasn't quite big enough to get an accurate measurement.  Do you have another option for another office?  They seem like a shitshow as my friend says!
  • Options
@chucksmom15 Since they did some genetic testing at my NT scan and we would likely have to wait another two weeks for results, I am just letting it go. I have already switched to a midwife who I love, we will find out sex at early anatomy screening, and will get other test results next week.

I'm guessing mine is the nipt? It's from progenity and last week I had a ultrasound and lab work done. They only took two vials, one was specifically for verifi and the other was for the genetic testing. I do remember with my last pregnancy they took much more blood. I guess this is just the type of test where they do it twice, I'd just never heard of it and it completely threw me off! Thanks for your help ladies!

I had mine done last Thursday; I'm reading some of you ladies are getting them back pretty early. How long did it take if I may ask?  I called doctor today and they said it takes 10-14 business days :s  this is not good for my PGAL mind. I wonder if  results arrive quicker depending on where in the country you live? Doctor said results are snail mailed and most of the NIPT are the companies are on the West Coast and we live on the East Coast.  We took the Matern-21

Mine was progenity and it went to Michigan and I'm in Texas. I had blood drawn Wednesday and got results Monday, but I did find out that it was only for gender and DS. I'm wondering if it takes a little longer if it's more testing at once. Last time k had it done I remember it taking longer but they did all my testing at the same time. I've heard 7-10 days is normal. Hang in there, I know the waiting is horrible!

So after my appointment yesterday I got to thinking, we did the NIPT test, but doctor said won't do NT Ultrasound until 19 weeks? She said that prior to me electing to do the NIPT. My google search results indicate it's supposed to be a first trimester screen. Should I call and ask for one earlier or is it redundant with the NIPT?
  • Options
@ash0625 my doctor is doing both NIPT and NT scan at my 12 week appointment. She did say they we won't do some blood work at the 20 week atanomy scan because it would be redundant.

That seems odd, the 20 week scan is morphology/ anatomy usually and between 12-13 weeks is NT, i don't know  if it matters to have it later, but it def sounds unusual, so maybe double check?

@ash0625 What @ashhsa said, the NT is done around 12 weeks. I'm getting the scan next week at 12 and a few days. Could your doc mean the anatomy scan?

Okay so I just called the doctor's office and the receptionist said a nurse will call me back. Is it just standard procedure that the nurse has to release test results? Or should I be worried that something is wrong?
  • Options
@ChristmasCookie I think that's standard procedure. Our office doesn't even call with results. They only call if something is wrong.
  • Options
I gave my blood last Wednesday. I'm trying to be very patient, but it's hard! Are most people hearing from their doc whether good or bad news? Thinking if I don't hear from them by Friday I'm gonna call, just in case they only call if something's wrong!

just took the harmony test today.  The nurse said they will FedEx the blood in and will receive  a fax with the results in no less than 7 days.  I wasn't given a lot of info though.  I'm in an area where there is only 1 ob office within an hour  drive,  and they are run by the hospital.

@eggplantface & @ashhsa I thought it was strange as well, but I feel like I was really clear in my question and mentioned the scan by name AND said that it would be looking at the baby's neck. She said they wait until 19 weeks until the baby is big enough, but everything I read here and on the google tells me thats an entirely different scan. I should get the NIPT results next week, so maybe I'm making a deal out of nothing, but I don't want to miss an opportunity to see this baby!

So I got my NIPT results today!!  So shocked bc they just took my blood on the 27th and they told us 2 weeks.  Happy to say our LO is healthy!  The sex is in an envelope so my DH and I can find out together tonight.  I left it in my car so I won't be tempted to open it.  This is going to be the longest afternoon ever!!!
  • Options
Soooo I just did NOT get my test back today because it came back "uninterpretable" AGAIN. No determination of anything, no sex. Doc said it might be a red flag, though statistically it's probably nothing. Oh, and I might be past the date of getting an NT screen. They're gonna ask if they can make an exception for me cuz I did do 2 of the NIPT blood draws w/ same result.

Basically, I can wait until 18-20 weeks for sex and if they see anything, and/or I can get an amnio. Not sure how I feel about that yet, but will discuss with DH tonight.

Not gonna lie, this is making me nervous.

@chucksmom15 that's so exciting and great willpower to wait until tonight!
  • Options
@chucksmom15 Your willpower encourages me. We'll have access to the gender (hopefully) a few days before we are going to find out with a few close family members. I'm concerned I'll just rip that envelope open.

@clc515 I am so frustrated for you. I get the nerves. Sending you positive thoughts.

Just got off the phone with my nurse. She said the NIPT is more accurate than the NT scan and that doing both would be redundant. She said they'll scan for other types of defects at the anatomy scan at 19 weeks. Hope to get my NIPT results back early next week.
  • Options
They can't be serious @clc515!  Twice and they still don't have results!!  I would be beyond frustrated and pissed.

@ash0625 and @clc515 I have very little willpower.  That's why I left it in my car lol.  I want to look but we agreed we would find out together so I'll tough it out.  The nurse would have told me on the phone but I'm behaving myself.

My NIPT results are sent to my OB and I won't get them until my next appointment in 2 weeks so it ends up being 3.5 weeks from my blood draw until I actually get results.

@clc515 that's ridiculous! I would call the company directly and ask why this keeps happening! I don't know why it would be ininterpretable unless there was a mistake made somewhere down the line. I would think if there was a problem it wouod just show as a positive?

@LadyMillil will they possibly give you your results of you call and talk to a nurse? It's routine at my OB for the nurse to give the results so maybe they'll tell you!

    @chucksmom15 how exciting!!!

@chucksmom15 That's great! Now I can't wait to hear what's in the envelope.
