Re: The big stupid questions thread

  • Is any one else formula feeding? I am a FTM and plan to formula feed and do not know how to talk to about choosing the right formula. I do have a formula in mind I want to use but I want to make sure it's the right choice.
We FF DS after a few months. We started by trying a few sample cans of Similac that we had on hand. Only one out of the three worked for him (Sensitive) so we stuck with that and gradually moved him over to the Target version a few months later. I wasn't a fan of corn syrup as the first ingredient, but it didn't cause him any discomfort, produced normal/regular bowel movements, and he grew and thrived on it.

Formula is pricey, so unless budget is of no concern, I'd recommend starting with the cheapest options (store brands) and working up from there.
If we need to FF this next LO I will probably start with the Target version of Enfamil because I've heard it's better. We left DS on Similac because he was used to it and formula isn't something you can just switch up on a baby.

  • I have no idea how or what list I got on, but with DS1, the formula companies sent me a ton of samples!!! I think it might have had something to do with something I signed up for at Motherhood Maternity... anyone have any ideas how I might have gotten o  that list?

I think you can go to the formula company's website and sign up. I got signed up through Motherhood last time though.
  • @amberp1528 I formula fed dd2 but breast fed dd1. Both are perfectly smart, well-adjusted and happy so 100% agreed "fed is best"! I also completely agree with ladylolly89 that it's hard to switch formulas on a baby so start with the least expensive option (unless your ped advises otherwise) and go from there. I used target brand of Similac.
  • @lmudra I'm still taking Unisom every night. I've tried to stop but have always had super nauseous days the next day. I'm more worried that I'm not going to be able to sleep once I stop taking it.

  • How much are you ladies feeling your baby? I am concerned like I have low fluid or something because I can feel this baby so much, and i can feel its hard limbs. Maybe this is normal and I can't remember,  currently 32 almost 33 weeks. Like it is almost like my whole belly moves when the baby moves... tia
  • @lmudra I honestly don't know how I would've gotten this far without unisom. No plans to stop.

Sounds the same as me. I'm 32 w today. It seriously looks like my belly is going to get up and walk away sometimes. Lol
  • @Mport90Her movements are definitely getting more painful and it does feel limbs and see a heel/knee/elbow something every once in awhile. I think its just par for the course. I remember there being a point in my last 2 pregnancies where movements went from cute and fun, to painful and annoying.

I think it depends on the woman and the labor. I didn't even come close to throwing up, but I know many who did!
  • FYI- for the Unisom & B6 takers out there, I actually ran out of unisom a week ago and figured I could just wait a day and be fine at this point. Nope, 5:30am and I was puking my guts out worse than I ever did in first tri. I am not messing around with that anymore. My Dr. Said taking them throughout pregnancy is fine, and that's good enough for me!

I did. They gave me an anti nausea med and it was smooth sailing

I puked with DD1 because of the pain med (not the epidural, I can't remember the name), however, I did not with my other two (I did not have that pain med again).

I did - not tied to any medication or anything other than "being in labor".

I almost did during transition, but I was also walking into the hospital during transition and was super nervous.

I haven't personally but I know many people who have. I did have diarrhea with my first, that was fun.

Anyone have tips on avoiding sleeping on your back? I always fall asleep on my left side and then wake up on my back. Then because I get nervous about that position harming me/baby I roll over to my side and wait for baby to move again before going back to sleep.

  • Inwedge a body pillow behind my back.  If I turn on my back at night then at least I'm not flat on my back.
  • I can't remember at all- can you feel the baby moving still while you're having contractions/in labor?
  • @danij0 I asked my doctor about this last week because I keep waking up on my back too! She told me that really it's just in the last ten years that physicians have been recommending women to sleep only on their side and if that's the only way I can sleep, it's ok.
  • @mport90 TONS of movement! I swore last night he was practicing for a triathalon. I had the same experience last two times and both were fine.  I think it's normal.

I threw up once during my 16-hour labor with my first. My second took less than 5 hours from start to finish and I did not throw up. However, that one began with a full-on crazy case of diarrhea. Like, contractions began, and I could not get off the toilet. It was crazy how intense it was to have that going on while also having contractions every 30 seconds to a minute. It was back labor so I needed my husband's fist in my lower back and I was apologizing profusely that he had to be witnessing/smelling it (not because he said anything but because I was just totally grossed out by it). I was so worried I would go in my pants on the way to the hospital but, thankfully, I guess I was fully cleaned out by then. I have heard that this is not necessarily an uncommon thing to happen when labor begins on it's own but sometimes it's kind of happening in the few days leading up to it. So, yeah. That was fun.  :D

It's crazy how we all get amnesia or something after giving birth.  I suppose that's why we are all crazy enough to do it again. :p I honestly do not recall movement during labor or contractions either.

I did not throw up or feel nauseous during labor, but I did pass out repeatedly during transition. I think it just depends on how your body responds to that level of pain.

I have not heard of women passing out during transition. Did the docs/nurses do anything to help with that?

They gave my husband an oxygen mask to hold over my face. He thought I was dead, but apparently they weren't really concerned about it. I woke up with every contraction and passed out for the 30 seconds or so in between them. I think it is one of those things that happens, but is pretty uncommon. My doula said she had heard of it but never seen it before.
  • @ellie111227 Thanks for sharing! I will make sure to let DH know this might happen and not to freak out.

  • @ellie111227 I fell asleep between every contraction during transition. Or perhaps I was passing out, too; though the nurse said I just kept napping, and that's what it felt like to me.
I just remember feeling very sleepy; dozing off and dreaming, and then waking up every 30-45 seconds or so for the next one.
  •  @ladylolly89 Could definitely be the same thing. They were saying I was fainting, but I'm not sure what the difference really would be. I didn't feel sleepy, though, just a ton of pain and then I'd black out and wake up in a ton of pain again. Fun times.
  • @ellie111227 Maybe! I don't recall being in pain but maybe my body was just blocking it. My sleepiness was ridiculous - I felt like I'd had a bottle of Benadryl. It's interesting how our bodies react under that amount of stress and work.

  • I didnt throw up but walking into the birth center I thought I might for a minute. I was in transition. It passed really quick.
I dont remember feeling movements in labor but mine was fairly quick so Im thinking maybe it was bc he was pretty far dropped(?). Once my water broke I physically felt him drop..it was actually a relief bc he had been under my rib cage before that.

I wedge my snoogle under my back a little. Sleeping all the way on my side hurts my hips.

Me too, the day of labor and the day before. I'm actually kind of hoping for this again though because It kept me from pooping  while pushing.

  • @meg2704 I'm 2/2 for throwing up during labor. It's actually what broke my water with DS. I don't really know of a way to avoid it. I'm easily nauseated (motion sickness, not eating for too long) as it is unfortunately.

@JAGinMI I feel like I had the exact same story! I actually clogged two of our toilets before leaving for the hospital - so that was super embarrassing and I felt terrible for DH. I also wanted to try and clean myself up before being checked at the hospital. Now while pushing I have zero shame but that lead up was awful!
  • I totally threw up but I also think that I was a little over heated from laboring in the tub. I could be totally wrong though. I do remember the guy came in to give me my epi and saw me puke and said "awe! Let's get this girl some relief!"  BUT I, Too, do not remember feeling movements during labor.
  • I didn't feel any movements with Adeline but I was hooked up to lots of monitors during labor and could hear her heartbeat and lots of hiccups while I was in labor!
  • I threw up but I think it had more to do with the magnesium I was getting but not totally sure. I also don't remember feeling any kicks during labor, weird I'd never considered that before. I too kept falling asleep for little couple minute naps between contractions. I wouldn't totally call it passing out but I would immediately go into sleepyland the minute a contraction would end until the next one began.
