Re: Weekly Randoms 4/3

  • @ellie111227 I'm not sure what they are doing for that kind of money.

My cleaning lady would scrub all 3 bathrooms, deep clean the kitchen, dust everywhere upstairs and downstairs, and wash/vacuum all floors. My house is 2600sqft and it was $100 a clean. It would take her about 3-4 hours.

@ellie111227 For monthly cleanings in a 2350sq foot home with 3 bathrooms we pay $90. I'm not sure what they would charge for a "deep" cleaning, but I imagine it would be at least double or more since they are really paying attention to all of the little details.
  • Can anybody give me an idea how much is reasonable to pay a cleaning service for a deep clean? I've never hired one before, but I want to get the house really clean as a baseline before the baby comes, and I really don't want to do it myself. Plus, if i do it myself, I know i will do a terrible job and it will end up just being my normal cleaning routine. So far I have only found one service that will come to my town, and they gave me an estimate of $300-$375, which seems high to me, but I don't really know. Anybody who has experience willing to share what you usually pay?

Eta- My house is about 2200 square feet with four bedrooms and two full baths. I assume that matters.
We have a 3400 sq. ft. house, and hired a cleaner to do a deep clean, then twice a month cleaning.  The deep clean was $200, but that might have been discounted due to having a standing arrangement with her.

This was last year, and we no longer use her services, but depending on your area's COL (mine is very low), $300 would seem right.  $375 seems high.

  • @Wino0920 @MKRLTX @krex-2 Thanks! That's kind of what I was thinking. I guess I don't know exactly what a "deep" clean entails, but I mostly just want the bathrooms and the kitchen really clean and the floors and baseboards throughout the house done decently well. I'm not looking for my house to be sanitized or anything. Pretty much what Wino said. I'll see if I can clarify what they are offering or find another company. COL is pretty low here as well.
  • Forgive me if this has been discussed... but I really didn't see it anywhere when I checked.

Diaper genies.... get one or just use a trash can?? And is any one brand superior to another??  I know my sister had one for her kids and I don't recall it actually containing the smell.

We had a diaper geni at work (I was a severe/profound para) and while it did seem to contain the smell, the diapers were constantly getting stuck in it and it was SUCH a pain. I like the look/reviews of the Ubbi, but it's pricey. (I personally use cloth most of the time, so just have a regular trash can with a washable liner).

I used a diaper genie with my DD and hated it. The smell was pretty contained I guess but the diapers always piled up so fast and the bag was really hard to remove. I stopped using mine eventually and just put them in a plastic bag in my outside trashcan.

Our 3 year old Ubbi (which takes regular trash bags) is still going strong. I'm always pretty sensitive to smells and think it does a very good job of containing them.

@BellaO21  I use a dekor diaper pail with a washable liner for cloth diapers. It keeps the smell pretty contained, and I imagine you could use regular trash bags instead of investing in specialty ones like you have to with the genie. I don't know how it compares to the ubbi for functionality, but it is a cheaper option. I've seen them on Amazon for $23-30 usually.
  • I prefer the Baby Trend Diaper Champ.
  • @ellie111227, that price seems high to me and I live in the DC metro area where everything is super expensive. Maybe they thought you wanted the type of deep clean you get when you move out? I personally would get some other quotes.

In reference to the diaper genie, I swear by it because I hate dirty diaper smells and it contains it well. I actually like the munchkin bags and use those with the diaper genie.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies!!!
I have looked into the Ubbi and actually registered for it originally, but I didn't know it took regular trash bags (which is of course helpful cost wise).
I'll have to look into the Dekor and Diaper Champ! I don't think I've heard of them (FTM obviously).
We are also planning on being OAD, so that will play into the cost/longevity factor.

Babygearlab.cm had an in depth review of different diaper pails, their lifetime cost, as well as the pros and cons of each.

  • I'm a cloth diaper user, but back in my nannying days I used the diaper genie and the diaper champ and hated them both. The champ would get stuck and would be the grossest mess to clean. Maybe they have fixed it though. That was 6 years ago.
  • @ellie111227 that seems really high to me.  We paid $150 for a deep cleaning and $100 a time for follow ups.  That included baseboards and windows as well as the kitchen, bathrooms, floors etc . My friend has a very big 6 bedroom house and she paid $200 for her first deep clean and $150 after that.

I think the diaper genie helps a lot with the smell.  I got lazy after the first year and throw them in a grocery sack in our trash can and it smells so I take our trash out a lot . I need to stock back up on diaper genie bags.  It is annoying to refill and fills up fast . I'm sure there are better brands out there. But I've used it through 2 kids and I'm sticking with it!
  • I was originally going to get a diaper genie or something but we have an outside trash can to use for when DH scoops the cat box every day so I just got those plastic bags that are like doggy poop bags and I plan to put poopy diapers in one of those and then in the outside trash and he will just have to empty it more often. For wet only diapers I will just put them in the regular trash.

  • The Ubbi is awesome.  When the lid is closed you smell absolutely nothing.  We're getting another one to put on the second floor now that we'll have a playroom and DDs bedroom up there.  It's expensive but takes normal trash bags and is way less of a pain in the ass to use than the genie in my opinion.
  • Just got an awesome good deal on a double stroller at Once Upon a Child!  Originally $150, going for $100, and I had a 20% off coupon!  I love a good deal
  • My 4 year old is the worst about falling asleep.  Ever since we took his pacifier a year ago he won't lay still enough to fall asleep.  It takes him hours and I am about to lose my mind.

  • @FSUNole31 My son just head butt me in the mouth asking for his 19th hug before bed. Because the previous 18 weren't sufficient to prep for sleep.
  • I'm babysitting the girls today and since I'm so sore I can't do much. And of course the 2.5 year old is being super sassy today! I was like I don't feel good today, can you please help me out a little!? She's still being whiny and not listening. At least it's bedtime now!

  • @Mother0fDragons yes.  After the millionth hug and trip to pee and telling us he was scared (he isn't just stalling) I just sat outside of their room.  He finally
realized he had lost the battle and fell asleep but geeze I about lost it.

  • @FSUNole31 and @Mother0fDragons mine is becoming a MASTER staller at bedtime too! Lately it's "Can you fill up my water bottle with half hot and half cold water, please?" And damn if I dont do it every time because maybe, just Maybe, this will be the trick that gets him to go to friggin sleep!!!

@MotherofDragons @meilay I agree with the sex and ultrasound threads. Also the nursery thread is used a lot but may not need a sticky. We also don't have to do sticky the AW Baby Celebrations thread just maybe bump it if gets too low.

  • Has anyone had experience with LO's getting strep multiple times close together? DD just had strep 2 weeks ago and ended up with it again this week,  even though we finished the antibiotics out. She's not even 2 yet, so I'm not sure what to do to prevent this from becoming a regular thing.

Does anyone use the app/website NextDoor for their local neighborhoods? My husband and I are always making fun of the stupid posts, and yesterday someone literally made the post "URGENT: just saw possum walking down the street."
  • Random anecdote for those wondering about their LO being breech: mine just flipped from breech at 28 weeks (last Thursday) to head down today (28+6). The bigger question is if he'll decide to flip back...and forth...and back again. I know everyone is different, but just good to know that there's still space / time for it to happen!

  • We have it @tjvan I've actually found it to be useful because we've had car break-ins in the past and have had the heads up to keep stuff safe. It's also been good to see other neighbors unhappy with our current situation  (many homes are rentals and people don't take care of them). But I'd agree-- there are some really weird posts that come up lol
  • Are there any stickied threads we can dump? The list is getting looooong.

As many as possible, PLEASE! I hate stickies with a passion except for maybe one or two for board rules. Right now, if you're on mobile, stickies that I never ever click on take up an entire screen of scrolling before I can see what I actually want to see. I don't know why The Bump in general is so obsessed with stickies. On TK, it's rare to have more than two, and some of the most popular boards have just one or none.

Ooh, maybe I should have saved this for tomorrow's UO thread. :p

@FSUNole31 Hopefully it is nothing, but that is definitely scary. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way.
  • @FSUNole31 my mom has had this happen a couple of times, and it turns out to be nothing. She was so nerve racked that she had that genetic testing done to see if she has the gene, and doesn't.

    Sending positive vibes.
