  • I forgot to bring my snoogle to my in-laws over the weekend and the first night when I went to bed it was like I couldn't remember what I was supposed to do with my legs without it there. So happy to have it again last night, and so was my lower back!

I also have my hour glucose test today. I'm heading to get it done now. Not looking forward to it at all. My last pregnancy I was able to eat jelly beans instead. Not sure what the disconnect is this time, but my doc is out with a family emergency all week and the person covering for her wants me to try the drink, even though I throw it up every single time. I'm kind of pissed. Here goes nothing. Fingers crossed.

I have my GTT on Wednesday. Good luck to those of you taking it today!

I made an appointment with a potential pediatrician on Friday. How many did you STMs interview before picking one out for your LO? Anything in hindsight that you wish you would have thought to ask?
  • I really wanted to fly my mom in this week to help me out.  I have a million decisions I need to make for the new house and it's so hard dragging a 1yr old to all these venders plus I have my 3hr glucose test and all my big kids activities to drag her to.  BUT I'm not willing to give up my evening 2hr trash TV veg sessions after the kids go to bed.

  • @MKRLTX I only interviewed one and I wish I had interviewed more. I'm going to interview a few this time. Around here it is really hard to switch because they only want newborns so I have to choose wisely this time.

@Kylieslip24 If you don't mind me asking, what made you want to switch? Was there something you think you missed on your meeting with the first one?
  • @swanbrooner you will be right up the road from me!!  I hope you have a great time down here, the weather should be gorgeous for your visit!!

  • @swanbrooner, so jealous of your break and FL trip. DH and I were just talking about Clearwater Beach last night.
  •
  • @MKRLTX I never interviewed pedis per say.  I picked a huge group and made each appointment with a different dr until one clicked with me then I stuck with him.

  • @MKRLTX we only interviewed the pedi we chose. DH's cousins all take their kids to him and his one set of cousins have known him their whole life because they went to school with his son, so I trusted their judgement and I really liked him when we did our interview. I haven't been disappointed by him yet! I also love all the other docs in the office and they have an IBCLC in office, which was really handy in the early BFing days.

@swanbrooner have so much fun!! We're heading to the Keys next month and I cannot wait!

@wino0920 I feel the same way.  When I think about June 4th it seems so far away but that's only 76 days from now and it's like holy moly that's right around the corner.

Enjoy your extra ultrasound!  I always love seeing my little one they change so much from visit to visit.

@huskermom14 I am so jelaous. DH and I got married in Key West 2 years ago in April and have been the last 3 Aprils. With time off needed for the LO, we can't make it back this year and it is killing me inside!! We are visiting my parents in FL for a long weekend though.

@Wearmi1 I cannot even count the amount of times I've had lunch meat this pregnancy....but my OB did say it was ok so I never held back. JJs is so good.

  • @Wino0920 I have the same thing going on and have my extra ultrasound today! I haven't had any signs or symptoms of previa so far so I'm just looking forward to seeing baby again. Hope yours goes well tomorrow!

@MKRLTX I've never been so I'm excited to see a new place and have that last getaway before baby comes! We're going with a couple of close friends so that'll make it all the more fun as well.

  • @huskermom14 thanks you, you too!!

I made an appointment with a potential pediatrician on Friday. How many did you STMs interview before picking one out for your LO? Anything in hindsight that you wish you would have thought to ask?
I only interviewed one before dd was born, but then I was unhappy and switched practices after a couple months. It was a huge group, and I could never get in with the same doctor twice. It's important to me to have one person consistently to make sure things don't slip through the cracks. I also hated the way they did vaccines - we had to wait in a seperate vaccine waiting room after regular appointments and then go into a specific room for shots with a nurse in there. It was annoying to have to dress and undress the baby again, it took forever to wait a second time, and I really wanted to be able to sit and nurse dd right away after shots to comfort her when she was tiny, but we obviously had to clear out to get the next person in, so I'd end up carrying her out screaming, check out at the front desk, and not be able to nurse her to calm down until we got to the car. The practice we switched to was much smaller and we didn't have any of those issues. Now we have moved back to the state I grew up in, and my dad is a pediatrician here, so he recommended our current ped for us. We'll stick with her for the new lo. Things I would ask if I was interviewing without an inside scoop though:

What are your regular hours? How does scheduling work for sick visits?

What is your policy on families refusing or delaying vaccines? (I don't want my newborn in a waiting room with a kid who has pertussis or measles!)

Is each patient generally followed by a single doctor (with the exception of some sick visits), or do people usually see multiple ducts within the group?

What happens if my child gets sick and I call after hours? Do only doctors handle call, or do your mid-levels (nurse practitioners and PAs) also take call?  How long can I expect to wait before speaking to a provider? If I have to go to the emergency room, will someone from the practice meet me there? (This is pretty unusual nowadays, at least in my area)

Do you have available on site: lactation consultant, nutritionist, mental health counselor? If so, how do they bill (through the practice, taking the same insurances, or on their own and may be out of network)?

If I arrive early and need to breastfeed or would like to breastfeed after injections are given, will an extra exam room be available for me to use?

Where did you go to medical school? Do residency?

Are you a part of the American Academy of Pediatrics? Are all the doctors in this group?

Do you use an electronic medical record system? Do all providers in the group use it? (My dad's practice had one doc who refused to switch to the electronic system and had other people input all his stuff, but then he lost track of test results all the time because he wasn't using the system effectively. If they don't buy into it and figure out how to use it effectively, it can be much worse than having a paper chart system)

Do you do any of the following in the office: stitches, setting broken bones, blood draws, etc, or would I have to go to the hospital for those things?

    What insurance do you take?

On what topics have providers here focused their continuing professional education? (A lot of times, practices will have kind of a resident specialist in certain areas that you would want to see if your child developed that particular issue. e.g. ADHD, food allergies, asthma, eating disorders, sleep issues, drug addictions, childhood obesity. I wouldn't choose my doc or practice based on that, just want to know for future reference if it came up)

  • Great list from @ellie111227 - one thing I would add is if the pedi communicates over email. It's been amazingly helpful to have one who does - I've sent pics of a rash, gotten thoughts on how to handle constipation, and things like that which don't necessarily necessitate the hassle of a visit.

She was my nephews dr so I interviewed her/met her once and just went with her. She was nice, but really over worried. I wish I could actually go back to her now as an experienced mom with the confidence to just say no, but she has moved. The first few visits she was worried about her head being too narrow and wanted to send her to a specialist that costed a few hundred dollars each visit and she wanted her to go for a bunch of "adjustments" so I was all worried about her head and not being able to afford these "treatments." Meanwhile she has never acted like she was in pain or anything was wrong. She just has kind of a longer oval shaped face. Just like her dad. Lol and then right after that I was kind of concerned because she pops and clicks a lot when I would change her diaper so I brought it up at her next well baby visit and she flipped out and again caused me to flip out. She said she needed an ultrasound of her hips because she might have hip displaysia(sp?) so of course I go home and Google and am so worried she's going to be in a huge leg cast for months and not able to walk and all this stuff. So we go get the ultrasound done and the tech kind of laughs and is like yeah she's totally fine. She's almost four and still pops all over, she just has noisy joints. Nothing is wrong with her. Our next visit we had to see someone else in the practice because she was booked or on vacation or something and I liked her a lot better. We saw her until about a year ago when she moved to Seattle. Now the whole practice is full of Drs that are new, they have a high turn over rate and I haven't liked any that I have met. And we live 1/2 hr away so it's inconvenient anyway. The sad thing is the first dr and I agreed on a lot, so I thought she was a great fit at first, but she caused so much worry for no reason.

I just got the book in the mail for my last Master's course, which starts today. Noticed it's written by the professor. I hate that. Is this really the best text on this topic, or are you just making me pay for it because you wrote it?

@awillis13 I'm glad you're okay. I keep waiting to do something like that and win myself a trip to the hospital. It's bound to happen.

Well, I took my one hour glucose test. I threw up the glucose drink...again, but I managed to not throw it up for an entire 45 minutes this time. The lady drawing my blood said it was long enough for the draw. She could tell I was miserable. My doctors assistant apologized profusely about me having to drink the nasty stuff, she talked to the OB filling in for my doc and set her straight. If I have to take the 3 hour test, jelly beans it is. I hope everyone else taking their test today has a better experience. Good luck! Fingers crossed we all pass.
  •
  • @erinh84 So sorry to hear about the throwing up, but at least the jelly bean plan will be in place if you need the 3 hour - and you won't need to waste time retaking the 1 hour! Hope you're feeling ok now!

  • Not quite how I was hoping my appointment would go. I failed the 1 hr GD test so I have to do the 3 hr next week.

And my placenta somehow is closer to the cervix than last time so I went from low lying placenta to marginal placenta previa. I have to wear a support band at work, no more sex, and they'll do another recheck at 34 weeks unless I start having bleeding. Fingers crossed I don't start having any bleeding and that things change between now and 34 weeks, I guess!

  • @mrt I am no longer allowed to wear my cute Frye boots.  This is the 2nd time I've done this since getting pregnant. The first time I was only like 6-7 weeks though, so it wasn't a big deal.

My whole bump is sore now.  I don't feel like I'm contracting, but its unnerving.  There was nothing registering when I was hooked up to the machine for 90 minutes so I'm not particularly concerned, I think I just have a heightened awareness of it right now.

The fall was so minimal I didn't even think to call the Dr until hours later, and then it was just a "hey i took a small spill, landed on my butt, everything feels fine, do I need to watch for anything?" which was met with "you need to get in here ASAP to be monitored."

Thanks so much @c1tym0m22 I'm feeling so much better since I came home and ate a protein filled lunch. I'm definitely relieved the jelly bean plan is in place im case I need to take the 3 hour test.
