Re: All Things Sick Baby Related

  • So today we learned that constipation can quite possibly induce a fever with our not-yet-three year old. It was the weirdest set of symptoms throughout the day today but she's fever free in bed and no one seems to be any worse for wear (other than me!).

  • Super fussy baby. Crying a lot more then usual (and a different cry), irritable, tugging on his ear. He also had his first actual solid poop which I think hurt him.
Then he had another hard poop.

Belly problems? Ear infection? Jet lag? Ahhhhh.
  • @kristah2 - same kind of thing here with the fussiness and hard poop. No ear tugging, but lots of hand sucking. My guess is the poop was uncomfortable or she's teething. We haven't done any traveling so it's not jet lag!
  • We're having issues with more solid and more difficult to pass poops, which I think is leading to increased fussiness here too. Poor babes!

We used a suppository as suggested by the doctor when it gets too hard for him to be comfortable. It's called Pedia-Lax.

@kristah2 Could it be from cabin pressure? Maybe his ears need to pop?

  • @SandNStarsNJ I have no idea! He was so good on the plane. Not a peep. And we've been here now since Thursday night.
I have a blockage in my ear and sinuses I'm on meds for and I'm afraid hes getting it.
But i don't want to over react if it's just teething or something!

@kristah2  my LOs poop was weird for about a week after our travels. To me it sounds like maybe teething or maybe LOs digestive system is just changing right now. Constipation and hard poops is no fun though, mine had that for the first three months as we tried to find a formula that worked.  Oh and I just thought, have you started solids recently?

  • @m6agua yes! A couple weeks ago we started purées. His first couple poops we're almost spongey. The last 2 were hard formed poops.

    Preach
  • More poop talk...
we have had green poop for the last 4-5 days. I pump so I've been trying to make sure the fore and hind milk is balanced, but it's not helping. He is teething. Two are coming in at the same time and he's always sucking in his thumb so maybe he is swallowing too much saliva? I don't know but it's giving him a rash because he's pooping ALL THE TIME. Ughhhhhhh..... diaper rash cream to the rescue.

That's probably it! Certain foods will make it more formed.

  • @rspalding001 That could be a result of the mucus/saliva he's generating from teething. Coconut oil was super helpful for the rash over here!

@kristah2 Don't overthink it. If he's wetting diapers don't worry too much, after all, you're on vacation!

And amen to the poop talk! We're having issues with both kids this weekend and DH just cannot handle all the bathroom issues!

We've been having the issue with diarrhea all the time to the point S has gotten a severe yeast infection. I've actually taken her to the DR twice for it. And it's been green also. We aren't sure the reason for it. I guess it could be teething but I don't see anything yet. Pedi gave an RX for yeast infection and said to use aquafor over top for a stronger barrier (A&D wasn't working). We are also giving a probiotic and rice cereal to try to firm up the poop. It's been over a week and it's waking her up out of her sleep  :'(.

  • I second @SandNStarsNJ, LO had those same cheeks over here right before teeth popped through!
  • Really?!! Thanks ladies!!

Interesting on the cheeks - how long does it usually last? Mine has had them for a week or two at least
  • I think LO had it for about 2 weeks, but it's mostly in hindsight that I remember it. They'd get really rosy after feeding or sleep. I guess it could have been something else, but it seems to have gone away now that the teeth have popped through.
  • Now that you mention it, S had once rosey cheek last week for a day and then her tooth popped and the redness was gone.

LO had high fever on Saturday night, i measured the temp and it was 101.3. she was coughing a little bit but no other symptoms. then she still had fever on Sunday morning and it was back to normal by Sunday afternoon. without any medication, is it normal that it is all gone? did the BM was the cure or what could she possibly have? i am vey surprised

We too often equate fevers as bad things. If she had one and it has gone than it means her body successfully fought something. That's a good thing! Try not to worry too much (I know it can feel impossible!).

  • Again. But this time along with an insanely runny nose he also is so congested on the chest and has the most pathetic chesty cough. Ah. Hate seeing him like this. Hopefully it doesn't last too long.
I know it's a cold on his chest and in his head. But at what point do you see a doctor?

If you're hearing rattle in his chest or he's breathing shallow or quick, go to the doctor.

  • @kristah2 have you tried a humidifier? We used one when A had an epic weeks long cold. It's not a cure but it definitely helped.
  • @RhodaMorgenstern we have been away and just getting home tonight so he will finally be back in his own room with his humidifier thankfully!

@SandNStarsNJ how exactly would you describe a rattle? He's definitely congested. Sounds like he has a lot of phlegm on his chest.

Poor thing trying to breathe through his nose is so sad. And his cough is super chesty. Breaking my heart.

Like a car engine running when he breathes that lingers just a little longer when he exhales than it should. If you put your ear up to the lower portion of his chest or upper back you usually can hear it.

  • My turn to join the sick baby club :( poor little guy was up All Night coughing. He was running a fever too, although that seems to be gone now. I kept him home from day care anyway however since they have a 24 hour fever free rule. It's a good rule, I can't tell you how many times I thought were were in the clear with DD only to have day care call and ask me to pick her up, so I'm not taking any chances this time. Ughhhhhhh I just wish everyone in my house would get over this cough already. I feel like we are just passing it back and forth.

oghh @rspalding001 sorry about the cold. We are dealing with a cold too since last Saturday. First she had a fever, then the fever went down but she started to cough and had stuffy nose. Now nose is running and her eye is watery. I think I will take her to her doctor this afternoon. H and I are also sick, we keep coughing and sneezing and waking up LO or each other etc. I have not slept more then 2 hours straight for over a week now.
  • @zoefer that sounds rough. I just keep telling myself he is building up his immunity, I hope we all pull through it soon.
  • Woke up and went to bed with a super stuffy and runny nose today. Just woke up for the first time since going to bed. I hope it's not a long night and he's able to kick this cold before it gets too bad! Now I'm just terrified everything's going to turn into an ear infection like he had before!

  • M had his 6 month needles the other day and amoung getting chewed out for a million things (I hate the public health nurses) I also ended up getting a referral to a specialist for him because his leg rolls don't line up.
Now I need to make an appointment with our family doctor again.
    Grreeaatt. Hopefully it's all alright!
  • His leg rolls not lining up is a thing??? Seriously? I have never heard of that before @kristah2 . I hope it's nothing but the nurses being overly cautious. Let us know how it goes!
  • @rspalding001 yes! Not lining up or having an extra roll on one side is cause of concern apparently. as far as I know it has something to do with a hip issue where things aren't aligning properly. They check to make sure hips are alright and I guess do some PT if there's an issue so it doesn't cause problems when they start walking
  • Geez @kristah2 what a crazy thing. I wouldn't expect fat rolls to line up. When LO wakes up from our couch cuddles I'm going to look. Hopes it's nothing for you!

I guess I understand on the rolls not lining up but at the same time that just seems odd
  • After reading some more it seems my family doctor will check it out and if necessary send him for an ultrasound to make sure his hips are alright. Often the rolls not lining up is nothing but they like to be sure so Im less concerned now!

B is on amoxicillan for his ear infections - 1st dose last night and another this morning before daycare. He left 1oz in his bottle this morning but he was distracted by the dog so I didn't think much of it; he just had his first bottle at daycare and only had 3 of the 5 oz which is very unusual. Coincidence? Side effects?

I would lean towards coincidence. Amoxicillin doesn't usually have that type of effect. He might be too congested to eat comfortably or too distracted or just not be hungry today. I'd just monitor wet diapers if you get nervous about food intake.

thanks! The Dr. asked if he had been eating less since it can be a sign of ear infection but I said he had been eating normally so it just seemed strange for it to happen after.
