@mrsmaryk2016 is totally right. It's not a fever until 100.6 and the common cold just needs to run its course. If you BF, keep it up because it helps and if LO gets super congested try steamy bathrooms, an infant vapor rub, or something of the like.
LO has had two colds but no fevers (we've been sick for 6 weeks straight). I can tell because he has terrible nose congestion, a cough, and sleeps a ton. I was super nervous when he first started showing signs, but now it's just waiting for everything to go away and making sure nothing gets worse.
@m6agua Mine was sneezing more than usual, sounded extra snotty/stuffy and then had a runny nose. He was sleepier than usual too but his temp was never high
@kristah2 aww - poor guy. E's cough is a result of some nasal drip, so if his cough doesn't sound chesty, that could be the cause. We use saline drops in her nose to help with the congestion and the snot sucker in the bath. The rash looks to me like he slept on his side and snot/drool puddles under his cheek for a while. Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal, but if you're able to call your pediatrician's office just to talk to someone, I would. I did that with E, our office has you leave a message for the medical assistant to your dr and they call you back within an hour or two to give you advice and let you know if they think you should come in to have it looked at. It's a big help and saves money by avoiding us going into the dr unnecessarily.
Our LO was having some coughing fits, and he had a little rattle in his chest but he didn't seem too bad so we weren't going to go in. Then he seemed to be taking forever to breathe again after his coughing, so we got pretty freaked out by that. Turns out it's normal for infants, it's called periodic breathing and they can pause breathing for up to 15 seconds or something like that! Our doc said as long as he isn't turning blue or it's a longer pause than that. I'm sharing because she said it's more likely to happen after a cough, hiccups, burps, etc. Just in case anyone else ever sees this. Obviously still get them checked if you're concerned and this happens to you. I just had no idea this was a thing!
You could always try a humidifier if the air is dry, or a steamy bathroom and see if that helps.
@lajoliedreamer thanks for the tips! I thought the same thing about the cheek rash but it hasn't gone away and it's been about 5 hours. We don't have a pediatrition just a family doctor and they don't take calls. Peds doctors here are by referral only. I am trying the saline drops tonight! Going to see if that might help clear it up a bit.
@desoky01 we tried th cool mist humidifier last night and will do the same tonight. Also: that seems terrifying.
@lajoliedreamer My LO has had a rash like that for quite sometime now. I thought it was from a milk allergy so I've been cutting out dairy. But at her 4 month appt the pedi said it's very common for babies of this age to get these types of rashes on their face and the only thing to do would be to apply aquafor or Vaseline and wait it out.
@kristah2 That rash looks normal. It could be any collection of moisture (saliva, snot, etc). I live by California Baby calendula cream for those stubborn rashes. Our pedi says that unless LO's breathing begins to sound lie Darth Vader there is no urgency. Try some eucalyptus based products (a room spray, a chest rub) and just wait it out. Hope he feels better soon!
I just got a call from the daycare that E is running a temp of 100.3F. She just fell asleep so they're going to check again when she wakes up and let me know if it's gone up (they don't require me to pick her up unless she's at 101). I'm really hoping it's just her body's last push to get well (her ever-present cold has finally been getting better!) or a tooth coming in and not anything else. She's already on amoxicillin for an ear infection that she got at the beginning of last week. At least she has her 4 month check-up at 3:40 so we can have the ped check her out then.
Just needed to get it out - I feel like a bad Ima (Hebrew for mom) for not running to her side.
@lajoliedreamer The good thing about a fever is that it means LO body is fighting an infection. So it's scary to us but a good thing. And a little infant Tylenol goes a long way with fevers. Good luck at the pediatrician!
The fever was gone when she woke up from her nap. The dr didn't seem at all concerned about it and still gave her the 4 month shots. She didn't feel any teeth coming in, but said that feeling to see if teeth are coming in is like checking to see if a woman is going to go into labor, it's not at all accurate.
Baby has diarrhea and trouble keeping his bottle down. I have been giving him 2 oz every hour and a half to 2 hours. I still fear he may be dehydrated. Is a little unflavored pedialyte OK? I'm think just a small amount through a syringe
As long as LO is producing wet diapers s/he is not dehydrated. Stick with what you're doing and stay the course unless diapers are remaining dry. Hope all gets better!
I'd check with your pediatrician. I just read an article about how bad water, juice and other drinks are for babies younger than six months.
My pediatrician said Apple or pear juice is ok if baby hasn't gone #2 in a while. I don't love the idea of giving him juice this early but I did it so I wouldn't have an airplane poo-slosion
LO has her first cold. Started three days ago with a dry cough and has now progressed into a super runny/congested nose and a really wet cough, no fever. I think I'm fighting off the same strain. Ugh. It stinks to see baby this uncomfortable. We are nursing on demand right now, doing some skin to skin, and sitting in a steamy bathroom twice a day. Any other ideas on ways to help her (& me) feel better?
I know it's not for everyone but we use Hyland's Tiny Cold Tablets and they make a significant difference. This LO hasn't had a cold yet but we used them with our first starting at about 3.5 mo and still do. They quickly dissolve in the mouth.
@jsmai we both had the same thing a couple d weeks ago. I used baby Vicks on the bottom of his feet (inside his sleeper). Saline drops in his nose. And cool mist humidifier in his room at night. Cleared him up in about 5 days. The humidifier was so nice it made me want to sleep in his room! For me I just kept eating halls and drinking oj
I'm bringing but this thread back since we all seem to be battling some kind of cold. What's proven to successfully help you and LO so far?
Vicks vapor rub on the chest, back and feet and a steamy bath with a nose syringe definitely are helping over here but as soon as one wears off he's just as bad and seems to have an increasing cough (no idea what does the job on coughs).
E has had hers for months so my input might not be worth anything, but we do saline drops in her nose in the morning and before bed, snot suck near the end of bathtime when it's softer, and keep an air purifier running in the bedroom. It all does seem to help keep it from being more than a minor annoyance.
So LO sort of wheezes. It sounds like she has a little congestion in her chest. Almost like if she had a good cough it would be good again. Her temp is normal and she is acting normal. Her poops have been a bit thin but not watery. I think we may bring her in tomorrow. What do you guys think, would you bring your LO in?
@m6agua I would wait. If she is acting normal like you say they will listen to her chest and see if she has a temp and then tell you to keep an eye on her. You can always call and ask the advice nurse first and see what they recommend. Having a sick little one is tough.
@m6agua does LO have other cold symptoms? Our little guy often gets what sounds like wheezes, but one time he had it while at the doc and she said it was not deep in lungs, it was only in his throat. She said as they're learning to swallow and deal with saliva that sometimes happens. It sounds exactly as you describe, a rattle that would go away with a throat clear or a good cough. Of course check in with your doctor if you feel at all concerned.
@desoky01 Thats exactly what I am thinking, just too much saliva. Honestly I am sort of in the wait and see, just keep an eye on her, DH is super worried though.
@m6agua mine has been sounding that way a bit lately since he has her another cold. FOr him it sounds like a good cough would clear it or like a big sneeze and eventually it seems to go away.
@m6agua If she's happy and doesn't sound like Darth Vader when she's breathing or have labored breathing, it's not worth the doctor trip. That rattle sound can also be an indicator of teething.
My LO has had a cold for about a week. No fever, stuffy, coughing, and it had been gone for about two days. Now out of nowhere this afternoon he was really irritable and crying a lot. I thought he was just tired. We got home, woke up screaming, temp of 100.6. Gave him Tylenol and he's sleeping now. I hope it's just teeth:(

FX for you! It sounds like a possibility. Is the mucus clear and is there lots of drooling? If so, you may very well be at teething...
