@lfrank12 I hear ya! There is a photographer I love (her pics always show up on FB) so I scoped her out today. The package is $1,500 and doesn't include a digital rights! Granted that's like newborn, 6 month and 1 year, but it's due now. Umm no thanks.
I think I paid ~$350 for newborn pics from the in-hospital photographer. I got about 15 digital images for that price. It was super expensive but I knew I was paying for convenience. I did love that they were done before we even brought him home. And I loved the quality. So we will be going that route again.
@ohstars I must be in a really expensive part of the world for photography, because where I am, that's pretty much the price just for the photo session. Never mind the per photo price you have to pay to actually get any images from the session. And no, that often doesn't include the digital files.
It's funny, I haven't even thought of hiring a photographer because I know my dad will be all over it like white on rice. He's an amateur photographer, and I know my opinion is biased, but he rocks at it. All I remember growing up is him behind the camera going, "now hold still..." Now my kid will be his next focus. Let's hope they have the patience I did! XD
After not going with the original photographer i had wanted as she doesnt let you have any digital prints, ive found a new photographer who i really like and is really reasonable for even her top package of prints & digital images.
@Xstatic3333 I'm sure it's too late now, but all our cookware is All Clad from the factory sale in Cannonsburg, PA, and we love it. When we lived in Pittsburgh, we loved going and getting great deals. It was the first weekend in June & Dec. Most of it you can't see anything imperfect about it. Sometimes there were scratches but minor. We totally bought some for gifts too. It was good quality and not marked as a second.
GUYSSS! Two of my best friends of like 15 years just announced that they are due in June!! I'm the first of my friends to have a baby (even though I'm one of the last to get married...oops) so I am so happy to be able to share this with one of my friends and have our babies be so close in age! And she knew at my shower but they weren't at the 3 month mark yet ahh!
LOL so accurate! Sex was so bad last night. I feel like everything down there is swollen. I hope this doesn't mean it will go this way the rest of the time
This made me really laugh out loud (thankfully my boss is not here this morning)! But H and I have actually had 2 really good times this week I know, I'm probably not the norm.
Re: photographers - when I started looking for ones in our area, the first one I talked to her pics looked great! But when I got her price list, damn! It was like $300 session fee (for each mat and NB = $600) THEN you pay per photo you want, how you want it (digital, print, canvas) and then she deletes them after you order. I was like you've got to be kidding me with this...
I looked at a couple more peoples price lists and ended up finding a photog that 2 of my friends have used so I know she's good, she does it on the side, and all we pay is the session fee (which for BOTH mat and NB is half what one would be with the other lady) and she sends us a USB drive with the digital files! Score!!! We have maternity session next weekend! Now I have to figure out what I want to wear...
Most of the newborn stuff we've seen was between 750-1000 just for the one session
These prices are so unbelievable and sad. We've never had professional newborn photos so I'm not sure how extravagant they are, but it sounds unbelievable that people charge so much money. My mom came in with her regular camera, took a snap of DS in his little crib thing in the hospital and that was it lol.
My mom pick out the newborn photographer, she is the one paying for it, the photographer cost $650, includes digital rights to pics. She only does babies and maternity sessions. Her pics are nice, but if I was paying I would not be spending this money because we just do not have it.
I briefly looked into maternity photos and found that any halfway decent photog in my area was charging $1500 for the shoot and "hair and makeup consultation" (um thanks I don't need you to tell me what to do with my face) and like ONE "Facebook cover photo." No digital rights, no prints, nothing. Like are these bitches out of their actual goddamn minds? I think it's shameful to try to charge families so much at such a special and already-expensive time of life. When I was photographing musicians for a living (although this was over 10 years ago), a full shoot cost me about $50-100 in negatives and proofs. It costs even less now that you don't have to physically print anything. Even if I paid myself $100 an hour (which, lol) AND charged my clients for the rights to their negatives, I couldn't ever justify those rates.
I have never felt so lucky to live in nowhereville, Iowa! My session fee with my photographer is $75 and I'll probably spend another $100-$150 on pictures
Holy moly I had no idea NB photos were that expensive!
Im rural so for Gwen I negotiated a half session from a photographer and paid $100 - I got 20 edited digital images.
For this baby we have a friend in our extended social circle - she's done other photos for us 1st birthday/2nd. I pay $50 for an hour and get 20 or so digital images. She's wonderful!
Unfortunately maternity/newborn photos just aren't in our budget either. DH doesn't think it's a big deal and it's hard to justify the cost of them. I wish I knew how to better find someone starting out in our area or something. It's not like I want them for free or anything I just wish there were options in the $100-$200 range rather than $500+

All I can say about the photos is ask, ask, ask around! We're in an expensive-ish area ($350-$500 was the norm for most, not including digital files) but through word of mouth I found someone who will do it for $150 with digital files and her work is beautiful. I think she would have done a package with maternity too for $250 but that wasn't something I particularly wanted.
Also @FreshBakedBrownies we scored a great deal at that All Clad sale! A $250+ sautee pan for $100, which was exactly our MIL gift budget. She's going to love it! Thanks for the advice.
Thank goodness for you ladies; I feel like you all keep me in line with what I'm supposed to be doing when... I'm a terrible procrastinator and the current discussion finally lit a fire under my butt to start contacting newborn photographers.
I'm with @Gretchypoo I too have a nice cameras and I'll be practicing! Haha!
Me too! I'm an amateur photographer but I've gotten to do a newborn shoot here and there so I'm kind of excited about it. You're all reminding me I need to start shopping for props!

Do you have any websites or tutorials you've used to get good pix??
Our photographer gave me a lesson one day, but I'm going to pay her to do it anyway. Just because she's awesome enough to give me lessons on how to get the shots with my good camera. What photographer does that?
@gretchypoo I've mostly done trial and error and lots of research about how to use all the functions of my camera. The biggest thing is lighting! You can get lots of good info just from googling. If you have any questions you can always PM me. You want to shoot for doing it during the 5-10 day old period but obviously it'll still work outside of that time period.
Has anyone else used an exercise ball to sit on at work? I read that it might help my back, so I'm trying it out this morning. I think the recommended size is actually too short, because my knees are above my hips. Or maybe it's not blown up enough?
Either way, I'm comically short compared to my desk when I sit on this thing. Also my manager is now afraid I'm going to fall over.
@WinchesterGirl I never used one at a desk, but I did have one at home. With mine I didn't sink down and my knees were closer to level with my hips. (I'm actually a bum and decided I'd rather lounge back for TV and stuff. It ended up more of a toy for me and the kids haha)
Thanks ladies! I think mine is definitely too short then, I'll have to exchange it for a bigger one. My knees are a couple inches above hips on this one.
@Lafreeman21 I love your company classification! We are not hippie at all (CEO is all suit and tie and forever talking about EBITDA), and they looked at me like I'd grown a 3rd eye when I brought this ball in.
@lemieuxk I'm used to being weird here, but this morning they really didn't know what to think. To make matters worse my manager helped me finish blowing the thing up, and then stood there with another coworker and watched while I got all situated on it. She said she was worried I was going to fall off of it. If I were going to, I don't think I'd want an audience for it!
@Lafreeman21 Omg i want to hear the rest of that scale.... We are a full on hippie office here- not standing desks bc we're too cheap so we keep paper boxes at our desks to put laptops on when we want to stand.
