Re: All Things Breastfeeding

  • One more question. Can I take out refrigerated breast milk and let it sit out and go to room temp? I'm trying to find a way to have a bottle ready quicker overnight since im in tight quarters vs having to hear water, put in cold bottle to warm up all while baby is likely crying. Unfortunately I don't pump enough before bed for a whole bottle or I would just leave it out at room temp

I have and didn't have a problem. S actually drinks her BM cold but there have been times she doesn't drink it all and I don't get a chance to put it back in the fridge. So I give it to her after her next nursing.

Absolutely. Just don't exceed 5-6 hours.

  • I don't know what to do now that my freezer is starting to look like this:

I wish we had a chest freezer!
  • @desoky01 I'm in the same boat. I'm making an effort to use up everything in my freezer (food wise) and not buy freezer items st the store anymore to create more shelf space.
  • With my last we bought an entire freezer for my stash itself. This time I'm pumping just to have enough for when I'm at work. So different. I'm also giving formula every once in a while to supplement at night so he sleeps better.

Pumping is the bane of my existence. I loathe it. I pump 3 times over night at work.. usually 10, 230 and 530. Well whoever used the pump room the day before me must have ice in their veins because it was a sauna and during my 530 pump I definitely fell asleep dropping my milk all over the floor and my pants. I really hope he starts sleeping through the night so I can drop the 230 pump and only pump twice.
  • I only have to pump once at work, he usually only takes one bottle while I'm gone from 8:30-1:00. I pump both sides at work, although it's more typical that he only eats from one side. So I usually can freeze about 3-4 oz a day unless he drinks both bottles. I do have a friend who needs BM so I might end up donating to her once we get too full.
  • Not the worst problem to have though @desoky01! I know some people organize them in soda can boxes to make room in their freezer, but that wouldn't work for ours. We bought a chest freezer last year. Now if only I was as good as you in getting a stash together...

  • @desoky01 Try putting those flat frozen bags in a gallon ziploc bag. I think about 10-15 fit and it allows you to stack them next to and on top of each other.

  • Wow, thanks @MrsBigTime that's so smart!
  • I really need to pump but my mom is still asleep - dad is feeding baby a bottle but there's no where for me to go. Ugh. I'm realizing the annoyance of pumping this week when I don't have my own space

So pump right there. If you're looking to be discrete just drape something around your shoulders. Even though they're older, the reality is they are your parents and they know you made and had a baby so really there is nothing to be shy about. I had to teach my ILs that.

  • @kvruns I have to agree with @SandNStarsNJ. If it offends your dad to pump in front of him then he can go wake your mom up.
  • Anybody else terrified for LO to get teeth? He already moves his head around so much like my nipple's elastic or something, I'm terrified of the day there are teeth involved.

I got nipped this morning by some sharp gums. Our first bit me once and I yelled. She never did it again. But that might be luck... definitely dreading the idea of this one getting teeth.

  • Yes! My nipples are raw because he's been like chewing on them trying to soothe his gums. Even pumping hurt this morning. Ack.

E has been doing the same thing! Since I only BF about three times a day, morning and evening, I'm not that sore yet, but I can see it getting there if she keeps this up!

I use a scarf for a little discretion, but LO wouldn't tolerate anything covering his head.

  • I have not been able to do any kind of cover. I'm small breasted and the angle she has to latch at makes it so I need visibility to make sure she gets where she needs to be. Once she's latched I try to use a scarf or the burpcloth for a little privacy in public, but most of the time she unlatches and gets annoyed when I do that so it's not very successful.
  • I use an apron cover when nursing in public. I tried one of those cute scarf covers but they are floppy and I can't see him. Since we are still using shields I need visibility.
  • I've used those muslin swaddle blankets as nursing covers before. They are large and super lightweight and I always keep one in my diaper bag for sun protection.
  • @rspalding001 - I love those blankets! I never thought to use them as a nursing cover or sun protection. Now that she isn't in a swaddle anymore that's a great re-purposing of them.
  • I've always been told of I'm going to pump to pump after LOs first morning feeding because there will be more milk. Does this mean that we produce less milk in the evening?  For example, could LO be getting 4 oz in the morning but then 2 oz at night?

I'm not sure about actual ounces, but yes. I did read that as your day goes on, your body produces less volume, but higher calorie milk. The larger volume in the morning is also because (in theory) your baby didn't nurse as frequently so you have more in the tank, and there is also a hormone that surges when you sleep and thus you produce more.

  • I second @MrsBigTime 's method. We were doing the soda box thing @SandNStarsNJ mentioned but making blocks out of the gallon bags makes it much easier to stack in the deep freezer.

I know there's no absolute "normal" but curious how many feedings everyone is at these days?

LO is 14 weeks, 4 days today and we've been mostly at 8 a day, some days 9 these days.
A couple of weeks ago we were in the 9-10 range. She's permanently dropped a night feeding but i was surprised to find she didn't do an extra during the day to make up for it. (Not that she needs to - she's 17 lbs even as of today! :p)
  • We typically do 6 although lately I've had to add some comfort feeding if he just won't settle
so today was probably 8. He had been on 5 but Dr had us add one since he's so small. It seemed to make it almost impossible for him to go more than 3 hours now.

LO is 14 weeks and is averaging 8-9 feedings a day.

  • LO was 14 weeks on Friday and is still averaging 8-10 feedings but he has suddenly added a night feeding that I hope is just from a growth spurt. He's also 19.5 lbs at this point so I want to say he's not a good comparison for feedings.

  • We are at about 8-9 feedings per day as well. 16 weeks.

I have clothes just waiting to be worn but instead had to buy LO newborn size shorts for FL  one of these days I know he will just jump through one size
  • We're at about 8 feedings a day as well at 15 weeks.
  • 14 weeks here and she is nursing 8-12 times a day on weekends, 8-9 feedings per day M-F. She takes 3 bottles 3-4 ounces each every 3 hours ish at daycare.

  • We had our 4 month check yesterday and DD went from the 35th % to the 10th! I'm feeding on demand and am not ready to start solids.

were going for a weight Check in two weeks and I'm hoping she's just establishing her new petite curve, but the worry wart in me can't help but question if something is wrong!

  • I hope it all works out @mrsbigtime. FX for weight gain! Are you going to introduce solids soon though? So curious as LO stares down the fork when we eat already.

    Thank you!

I like "food before one is just for fun" and plan to just allow LO bites for fun. We eat pretty healthy, so a few bites of sweet potatoes or avocado here and there are my plan for a few months. I have so many years to have to worry about the chore of making meals, I'm going to savor this time where I don't have to do that! I also love watching babies experience food, but I want it to be more for joy than for calories.

  • I'm so upset today. I really don't think there's any way to salvage my breastfeeding relationship with DD. We have had such a hard time BFing from the beginning. She would constantly latch and unlatch, I had overactive letdown and oversupply, which caused her to be gassy and cough at the breast. To help with that, I would occasionally pump and bottle feed her. Now 4 months later, my supply has regulated, but nursing her has still always been such a battle. For a while she refused the breast during the day, but nursed perfectly at night. I figured she was distracted by my 2yo DS because she always seems more interested in watching him and whatever else is going on rather than eating. Now the times she is willing to nurse are less and less frequent. If I can get her to latch on, she squirms, grunts, kicks, and pulls at my breast (impatient for letdown, I think). She will usually only take one breast, but still acts hungry. I've started supplementing her with formula because sometimes 4 hours will go by with her refusing to nurse. I try to pump throughout the day, but with a 2yo to tend to as well, it's just not always possible for me to stop what I'm doing and pump. Now I can tell my milk supply is dwindling even though I'm continuing to pump. I've been crying all morning, and the past few days I've started feeling resentful of DD when she is clearly hungry but won't nurse. I nursed DS for 15 months, so is just so unexpected and I feel so horrible and emotional, disappointed, and beyond all frustrated. I get stressed out every time I go to nurse her and I can feel my body tense up because I know she is just going to start crying, screaming, kicking, and I'm going to have to cave in and give her a bottle. Ugh, just need to vent I guess  :/
