@nda_roxybabe , definitely channel that excitement now when buying diapers still seems fun! :-)
LOL! Great point, I suppose after a while diaper buying will not be so excited. We're going to do Amazon subscribe for them and I hope they come out with a dash button!

  • @nda_roxybabe best advice for easy exchanges is to add them to your registry. That gives you one year to exchange because we can pull up the purchase using your registry!
  • Just got my diaper deal. Now I feel super prepared for this LO!!

  • @nda_roxybabe thought they did have a dash button for at least one of the brands? I could totally be wrong - and I haven't looked into it today. I've always wanted a dash button but haven't pulled the trigger yet :)
  • So, I asked on FB which Pampers most moms recommend and I got a few comments that I should really wait to buy diapers. I am a planner, I am excited, I wanna buy now. @livin541 I'll be able to return unopened boxes, right? If I needed to.
@nda_roxybabe I was able to return all of the Huggies and Pampers (that weren't swaddlers),  I used my red card for the extra return period and taped the receipt to the box.  I was also able to exchange all the diapers that I got for my baby shower as long as Target still carried the same box.

You never know which ones will work until baby is here and my Targets have always been awesome.

  • So, we haven't purchased any diapers yet partly because of moving and not wanting to have a bunch more stuff to add to everything else and partly because we are wanting to do cloth diapers. Does anyone have experience with cloth diapers? My sister and I both had to have cloth due to sensitivity, but I know they make for sensitive skin diapers now, but I also like the idea of not having as much waste to through out. Thoughts?

  • So...I cried last night because H told me I really didn't need to go buy diapers and that its still early and I have plenty of time. I explained my reasoning of just being excited for our first baby and wanting to buy it things, any things. He thinks it's silly, but said if it'll make me happy...haha

@BabyMC517 After reading Young House Love's experience with cloth diapering I really wanted to do it. However, it's been years since I read that and H is opposed and I decided I am just going with disposables. Anyways, my point is, go read their experience :)

  • @BabyMC517 I have no experience in cloth diapers, but I know my friends who do make the switch love it! It's just not for me and I don't think I could ever get DH on board. But I also wanted to let you know that my DD1 has VERY sensitive skin; absolutely no dyes, perfumes, anything we can use and I've had good luck with Huggies Diapers with her. I did have to buy the "natural care" wipes from Huggies for her, as soon as I used any of the other wipes (even Huggies brand) she would break out in a rash!

Scored 6 boxes of diapers last night (including hopefully the last two boxes for DD2 if potty training goes in my favor this weekend!) I got $50 worth of Target gift cards, which is basically like 2 boxes of diapers for free!

Can Target please start having Costco size carts?! How is a momma supposed to push around her kids and score a diaper deal?!
Yay! Can you tell me how you broke it down?
I assume 6 boxes, using a manufacturer coupon each? Then $10 gc x 3 for 6 boxes plus the $20 gc for spending $125? Do you know how much you ended up spending (before gift cards)?

  • @babymc517, I have no experience with cloth diapers, but have friends who do it and love it! One thing to keep in mind, if you are planning on sending your child to daycare, make sure they will do cloth diapers. Our daycare is strictly disposable only.

  • I went into this thinking I'd like to do cloth diapers. Then, when my husband and I were talking it over a couple months ago, I asked his opinion. He said he'd love to do cloth, but he doesn't want to clean them. I just stared for a minute. Disposables it is! I still wouldn't mind trying it down the road, but there's no way I want to deal with figuring out cloth diapers and being the only one cleaning them as a new FTM.
  • @BabyMC517 we do cloth diapers, and I love them!! If you have any specific questions about cloth, I'll do my best to answer them!
  • I did a combo of cloth and disposable for DS and will probably do the same this time. Cloth is super easy when they still have BF/formula poo, it's once we introduced solids that I had a hard time with the scraping aspect. I love how cute they are, and if you do AIO it's really not a whole lot more work than disposables. I am not an expert by any means, but I can certainly answer questions!

Ewww, no, you don't have to scrape!!  These are magical!!! https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00483GAJU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1484076003&sr=8-1&keywords=cloth+diaper+liners&dpPl=1&dpID=414dBWXsbhL&ref=plSrch
  • Thanks, ladies! The whole cleaning them out once solids are introduced is definitely going to be interesting, but luckily H doesn't have a problem with messy stuff so he may be on diaper duty when he's home!!  ;)

I've done some research and read the article from the Young House blog and have found that most prefer the bumgenius AIO and the flip with inserts. I'm thinking we may get a couple of both to try out and then determine which ones we need more of. Most have said you need between 12-18, which seems like a lot of cost upfront but saves a bunch in the long run!

@h&pmomma I might just look into the natural wipes because I'm weird like that and will just assume our baby will be sensitive as well! If I'd rather have natural things put on my skin, I'll most likely want that for my baby too haha

  • @h&pmomma my thoughts exactly on the cart situation! Luckily DH wanted to go with so he held DD while I pushed the cart of diapers!

    @nda_roxybabe
i got 6 boxes of diapers. And that's exactly how I got my $50 in gift cards!
After my 5% (red card),manufactures coupon and cartwheel I paid around $145!!
If you haven't already check out the coupons. Com app you can print coupons for diapers there , the limit is 2 of each coupon but DH got the app on his phone and printed two as well!

  • @BabyMC517 For the Huggies Natural Wipes, Costco sells them in a big economy size box! If you can catch it when they have a coupon it's a good deal. I can usually get 1 box with a coupon and it will last me a few months until the coupon comes out again!

  • @nda_roxybabe - I would have cried too! DH is very good at letting me have my way with a lot of things, especially when it comes to buying things that I feel we need so him telling me I don't need diapers would have turned me into a mess. And like your DH, I'm sure he would've ended up saying okay if it makes me happy.

I got my diaper deal. Between coupons and cartwheel, I ended up paying $116 for 4 boxes of diapers, 2 smaller packages, a Gerber snack thing, and a bottle of Aveeno lotion and got $40 in GCs. Such a good sale!

This is true. I'd aim for the higher end of that quantity range, because you'd want 8-10 clean while the rest are tied up in a laundry load (which can take a few hours with a double wash and drying time). I spent $400-$500 on cloth diapers (all types) but over the course of that first year, saved about $2000. For us, it was worth it. You'll learn quickly which you like the best.

*Gross warning* The solid poop part of it is a minor hurdle to get over if you use diaper liners. They come on a roll like paper towels, and you just rip one off and lay it on the clean cloth diaper and then put the diaper on the baby. The liners I used were bamboo and soft like a super-thin see-through washcloth, sort of. They are disposable and a whole roll lasts for weeks. Pee goes right through. Solids get lifted/wrapped and tossed into the diaper genie, which we used for used baby wipes and other trash. Simple.

  • Thanks, @SKZW ! I haven't come across the inserts on a roll yet...do you have a link by chance? I've seen the reusable ones and found one that is a pack of 12 I believe. I have them and some cloth diapers on our registry lol I figured why not?! We've already gotten most of the bigger items so why not put those on there!

The Amazon link I posted a couple of posts higher on this thread is for the diaper liner rolls :)
  • @BabyMC517 we did cloth as well until DS was about 8 months old and I loved it.  At that point he started getting a lot of rashes and because I was working full time I didn't have the time/energy to figure out what was going on and we switched.  One thing I will say is that  it is definitely harder when you're working full time, but it is totally doable.  I had planned on doing cloth with this baby but with chemo and surgery during the newborn phase I don't want to commit to anything.

I would also recommend seeing if there are any cloth diaper stores in your area.  There was one near us when I was pregnant with DS and they had monthly cloth diapering info sessions.  It was VERY helpful to go in and hear about all the logistics and see the diapers in person.  Even if there isn't a store doing info sessions, being able to go in and talk to salespeople would be very helpful than just researching on the internet.
  • I am also hoping to cloth diaper. So much helpful info. Thanks ladies!
  • @skzw thanks! Didn't even see it! I get lost in the threads sometimes.

@RainyDays86 I'll definitely have to look to see if there are any stores around me! Great idea! Thank you! PS I'm so happy to hear your news in the other thread  :)

  • @BabyMC517 Look into whether there's a diaper service in your area too. Our (decent-sized university) city has one and they dropped off a weeks' worth of tri-folds and picked up the dirties the same day. I really liked Thirsties covers for tri-folds but we also used a few gDiapers covers when DD was really tiny. We did a combo of cloth during the day and (mostly) disposable at night. After 15 months or so, we switched to disposables full-time. We lived in a small apartment at the time but I'd consider doing the same even after we moved into our own house with our very own washer and dryer. ;)

  • @mdlorenz i really wanted to do a diaper service at least for a little bit but unfortunately there aren't any in my area, at least none that I've found yet. I live in SWFL and most are in the east coast counties or more north. I'm thinking starting one up might be a good business  :p

@BabyMC517 I cloth diapered my twins for the longest time, for liners I would buy a cheap fleece blanket from Walmart for $2.88 and it would make 50ish liners.  Any liner that was "gross" we just threw away the other ones we reused.  DS had a very sensitive tush and until he was 1 anything besides cloth would give him rashes.  Even with pampers I would have to put a diaper cream barrier during every change, and change him anytime the little line turned blue.

^^This. We actually justnfolder the tops on 1's for a week and skipped newborn all together. Exchanging is not big deal but it's infinitely easier now than in your first few weeks when leaving the house seems daunting.

@nda_roxybabe what @WombThereItIs and @lrwardrop said! We only bought a very small pack of NB diapers my daughter only stayed in them for no longer then 2 weeks then we moved right into ones! We figured what ever we take from the hospital plus a pack would be plenty of the NB size!

ETA: @nda_roxybabe I didn't realize there was a gift for the baby registry. I just noticed when I went to look at mine they offer it at guest services. Did they have it available or did you have to call ahead to have it ready?

  • Yeah, we never had newborn anything. DD was 9.9lbs.
  • Their supply was super limited, so I just picked those up with plans to exchange :) I wanted to get some Cruisers and they only had the big boxes!

Yes, if you register with them then go to guest services they give you a welcome bag! Mine had an Advent bottle, Nuk pacifier, some Honest Co diapers and wipes, then a variety of samples and coupons in a reusable little tote.
