Please don't use Cohen. It is a surname with a very sacred and specific meaning in the Jewish community. I personally would not be offended per se, nor would I treat your child badly by any means. But imho using that specific name does cross the line into cultural appropriation and isn't respectful at all.

We definitely won't be using Cohen, maybe that didnt come across in my post. I was intending on opening a conversation about the name since I (even with several Jewish family members) had no idea the name was so controversial. At this point I'm more curious about the current stance on the name, not for the sake of us using it, but for my own curiosity and knowledge.

I did read several articles about the name and have found it is really a toss up on people's thoughts. I know two Cohen's, so it came as a surprise to me that the name had such a debate behind it.

My H and I already decided not to use it, hence the consideration of the Dutch name Coen, which is similar but not related to Cohen... and the other two names in general.

I appreciate your feedback, but I'm not sure why the PP thought a QFP was needed...I did not come in with extreme glitter and glee screaming we were using Cohen. I definitely mentioned we had done further research and realized we should NOT use the name.

  • My husband picked first names and I did middle names. We find out in 10 days what we are having so I'm super excited to start calling them by name. My family is really big on spelling names differently, so that's what we did with both names.
Boy- Greysen Charles Allen (Middle names for both grandfather's)
Girl- Erianna Brooklen (First three of my name for her first, last 3 for my husband's last 3 letters of his first name)
  • We have Stella for a girl and Austin for a boy. SO excited about both our choices!!!

Middle names we are still discussing. All the ones we like that we've come across end on the same letter as the first names (ie. Austin Grayson, Stella Serena)... which really bothers me. I'm really working on getting dh to go for Austin Maverick.... like top gun! I think it has a great for with our last name which is one syllable. He kinda liked it but is thinking it over still. (Hope I don't get terribly judged on here for that name haha.)
  • I like Maverick, personally!

We have chosen Nicholas Padraic for our son. My father and grandfather both have Patrick for a middle name so we just went with a more irish/gaelic version. If it was a girl I think either Collins or Cassandra would have been top choices.

My H is stuck on the name Astrid for our girl. I suggested we use a Scandinavian name, as his mom and my grandpas families are Scandinavian and I found a lot of names I like. I like the name Astrid, I just worry it looks like we tried too hard to pick a unique name... The more I think about it, the more it grows on me though!
    I think Astrid is adorable!

  • My husband won't even discuss names unless I admit each and every discussion that his choice is still at the top of the list - Chalupa Batman
That means no CB initials for you, or we'll know what is name is supposed to be! ;)

    What about Stella Serene?
  • We're naming our daughter Callie Grace
  • We are going with Ronin Alexander for our little guy.

  • We have zero boy names we love. And we're team green. So this is going to be a problem.
  • Our daughter's name will be Zahra Reign
  • We have literally not even discussed names. Not once. Haha! Our daughter is Adlee Claire and our son is Christopher "Jack". A boy would have to start with a C. A family thing on my husband's side.

We decided! I was having difficulties with the name he wanted since it is close to my stepson's name (for a good reason but still). I asked husband to talk to his ex and make sure she was okay with it now that we know it's a boy. She had no problems. So his name will be Charles Louis, after husband's grandfather and my grandmother.
  • @MrsAuby We are going for Levi, too, if we are having a THIRD boy. I really like Levi Cruz, but my husband, who is Nicaraguan/Hispanic, says Cruz is only for last names. Grr...
  • @JanaRomeo I thought Corvin Phillip sounded nice. Phillip is Greek. I don't know how it works in German or Italian, though. I did have some ancestors that had the name Phillip that had German ancestry.

    @FiancB
You are the first one that I have seen have Sofia on their list. Love the meaning of this name. If this one is a girl, we are going with Sofia Kathryn.
  • @flash86 where did you get Adlee from? it is nice and very similar to my name so I am curious.
  • @ashleymercado88 I am Hispanic too and I had picked a name combination that had Cruz as the middle name and my DH was opposed to it. He felt the same way lol. So he picked first name and I picked the middle name. Ronin Alexander :-) my middle name is Alexandra so that made it easy.

I have a 2 year old Levi :) I get compliments on his name and I have yet to meet another Levi. I
    love it!
  • @Fullhandsfullheart I have only met two other Levis (other than jeans, haha) in my lifetime and that was years ago...I don't think it ever really had a popularity spike.

That's a nice way to pass on your name to your son. Ronin is a very unique name. I have never heard of it before.
The problem with my husband picking names is that he either never has suggestions, they are silly, or I just veto them. The only name he has picked for our two boys was Armando, which was super easy because it's his middle name. Lots of work on that one! lol
  • I loved the name Cruz. If I had any kind of trace to Latin or Hispanic roots that's what I would have wanted.. but since this kid is going to be whiter than a piece of bread, we went with Nicholas.

I find out baby's sex this morning at my 20 week, U.S.  I have 3 gender neutral names picked out.  Riley, Taylor, and Spencer.  I chose the 3 names that would go well with my father's middle name.  I'm leaning towards Taylor and Spencer the most, just stuck between the two.
  • I love Spencer!
  • We're having a girl! Right now we're pretty set on June for the first name.
Aside from thinking it's a pretty name, it's the month my mom is born in & the month my grandfather (who I was very close with) passed away. And my husband is a big Johnny Cash fan....so it all kind of works.

We're having trouble picking a middle name, though.
  • We have no names. Or, more accurately, we have about 30 names. It's kinda driving me insane. We usually have two names set in stone by the time I'm 6 weeks pregnant, so this is kinda disorienting. Hopefully when we find out if it's a girl or a boy we'll be able to narrow in on it. We do have middle names though, which will be either Thelma or Thomas.

My grandma's name is Thelma but she's always gone by Tommie so we are using that as a middle name if it's a girl. If it's a boy the middle name will be Henry after both my husband's and my grandpas. I like a lot of girl names but boy names are hard!

    Girl: Quinn Tommie
    Boy: Owen Henry

I'm glad to hear it @fullhandsfullheart! Just in the past week I've had some second thoughts. Not enough to actually change my mind but I'm happy to hear you get compliments and still love it!

  • @flash86 well, I love it! and trust me you and she will get a lot of compliments. I get so many compliments every day.
  • We had Abram or Owen picked out for a boy, but we found out last week that baby is a girl!

Girl names are super hard for us to agree on (and of course, this is our second girl, lol). Right now, the two names we have on our *maybe* list are Isabel (nn Izzy) and Natalia (nn Lia).
