  • Huh! I had never heard the polish version before. I thought the Z was just for extra flair. You learn something new every day!

If it's a boy, I think we're going with Hudson Thomas (Thomas is my dad's name).  For a girl, we've kind of narrowed it down to Elle or Marlowe.

The middle name for a girl is tough.  We agreed to use family names and, since our son has a name from my husband's side, this baby will have one from my side. The only girl name I would want to use is Genevive (my Grandma) but my sister already used it for my niece and it feels weird to use it again.

So I'm really leaning towards using Thomas as the middle name for a girl.  I know, it's weird.  But it's a middle name so most people won't ever know.  My dad has always wanted someone to be named after him (he got close when my aunt named her son Thomas, but she went out of her way to tell him it was not after him) and I know it would mean a lot.  And we have an interesting last name, so I figure if she ever needs a stage name she can just use that!

Thoughts?  We don't even know if it's a girl, so I know it's silly to be worried about it.  But I'm a planner and I'm obsessed with names and I can't help it.
My middle name is traditionally a boy's name. I have it because it's my mom's maiden name. I hated it as a kid but I think it's cool now. So I think you could do it. You could also use "Tommie," which I think could work with either of your names.

Thanks! Also, I have to say that I think Anna Rowe is GORGEOUS. And your meaning behind it is super cool too.

I love Orion! My dad had a sailboat with that name and his company has Orion in the name! Whenever I look up I always see it first and think of my dad!

If we have a boy our current favorite is Theodore Kruger.  LO was conceived in south africa so a way to pay homage to that lol.  My fave for a girl is Delaney Starr which is my moms maiden name but H hates it....

I'm assuming his "Emerson" is from Ralph Waldo Emerson? In that vein:

    Henry, for Henry David Thoreau
John (for John Muir, or John Audobon, the famous naturalists)
Ansel (for Ansel Adams, famous environmentalist and landscape photographer)
Lewis or Clark (for Lewis and Clark, or do William Clark as a first and middle name)
Theodore, Theo, or Teddy for Teddy Roosevelt

Yess, I was thinking along the same lines; H and I are also big nature lovers, and I considered several of these for our baby as well. (We recently finished Ken Burns's National Parks documentary series, which fueled a lot of inspiration.) "Aldo" and "Leopold" ("Leo" for short?) are both rising in popularity in recent years (so they might come across as a little more normal than "Muir" ;) ), if your husband has an interest in forestry!
  • Our struggle in the name game is that we don't want the most popular names of the years for our kid(s). We both have basically top baby name of our birth years, and always had doubles or more in all of our classes. (My grade 12 English class there were 5 Jessica's, plus some additional duplicates)

That being said, I don't want to go super far off the deep end with wild and crazy names. Hubby is all for making something up, which I totally disagree with. I want the name to spellable by sound and pronounceable by sight. And not something that our kid is going to have to correct everyone for their entire life. There has to be some kind of middle ground between having a "unique" (hubby's words not mine) and made up name, right?
  • We chose Evelyn Anne long before we were pregnant, but just recently chose Sage William for a boy.

Sounds like we have similar feelings. We avoid anything on the top 100 for either gender, preferably outside the top 200. DS is Brock, which I feel is a "real" name, uncommon, but not weird.

  • We are thinking Ophelia Grace or Meadow for a girl. Still don't know a middle name for Meadow. The only boy name we have both liked so far is Ace and I'm not sold on it yet. Idk. We should find out the gender next week when the test results come in so we will think about it then!

@whitneyf1 - I have mentioned it to her before and she doesn't have a problem with it.  I'm more the one that does.  It just feels unoriginal and my husband isn't a fan of them having the same middle name.
  • We have a long girl list and a very short boy list; which probably means it's a boy because that's just the way it is. We find out June 28. Anywho, fav boy names so far are: Reed Elliot or Miles Elliot. Girls: Charlotte (Charlie), Audrey, Isla, Adaline, Willow with middle name Jeanne or Rose after my favorite aunt who passed away. So....many....choices. Naming a human is a lot of responsibility ahhhh

  • @mrsjlang check the SSA's top 1000 names list. Once you get into the 300 or so names generally become less common.  Just double check variant spellings. Jackson for example jumps ridiculously high in usage once you add on all the Jaxon/Jaxxon/Jaxson.

    https://www.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/babyname.cgi

This site is also great for checking out a names popularity over time, and you can compare two names at once.

  • My husband and I haven't really talked about it yet for this baby, so I'm sure he will veto a few of mine but so far just brainstorming I like...

    boys-
    Eric
Bennett or Benjamin (I like the nn Ben but we have a long last name and Benjamin sounds like a mouthful with it)
Luke (is this too matchy with big brother Levi?)
    Cole
    James
    Graham

    girls-
    Allie
    Kate
    Brooke
Im struggling with girl names this time

I think being team green this time will make it harder since we will have to pick options for both sex

We have some girl names picked out but no middle names and no solid boy names!! Can't think!! For girl names we like Kya, and some musical names like Harmony, Lyra or Cadence... But not sure what names sound good with these! And need some desperate help with boy names. I like Emery! And someone earlier mentioned River... But we can't agree and I'm just not so sure either. Waiting to find out the sex of the baby until brain storm some more...

It's really bugging me seeing people pick my last name for a first or middle name, and spelling it wrong.

Lol.. I think it's just* because on these boards we tend to put first+middle, which always sounds a little too precious, but just consider that irl nobody will be using the middle. Except for those people that add #firstnamemiddlename to all of the Instagram baby pics. (eye roll)

    *ok, maybe not JUST that..

Lol. I'm absolutely guilty of the hashtag thing. No ragrets. Although now that she's older I don't do it much anymore. Or Instagram her that much at all anymore, it's impossible to photograph a toddler.

The reason people do this is so their hashtag is unique and when they click on it, it's only photos of their baby. I actually found using first name+birthday works well too.

  • @Knottie1458416769 - Men are so funny. I’m actually wild about Felix and I get the same man guff about it lol.

@BooksForMe23 - Oh wow I love Emerson and Milo both. My best friend lovessss the name Milo it’s number on on her list. With her last child her husband vetoed it too and they ended up with the middle name Camilo (which is popular in Mexico I guess so it fit them well) but now she’s angry and planning for Milo again cause she got jipped the first time hehe.

@robaarts - Luca and Rylan are so unique and lovely! So are the girl names Adalyn and Brynlee!! You’re on a roll with the good names man!

@leighry - I haven’t heard Gavin for a while I really like that. Love Noah too. Danica is really pretty I’m a fan of that one too. And oh using your Maiden name is actually a really cool idea! I like Conrad too it’s coming back isn’t it?

@mrsjlang - I see your concern. Are hubbies made up names like totally wild? I can see that a made up name could be pronounceable and make sense by site as long as it was kept reasonable. Maybe not the best example I play some RPG’s  and I was just strolling through my names of them. I have one named Majka. I’m totally not suggesting it as a baby name at all but it seems easy to pronounce and not confusing to me so it makes me think it would be possible to create a name that could be… but hopefully that’s like cuter haha.

@babycanney - Ahhhh love all your names lol they are all awesome.

@Oakleypoozles I know I really LOVE Gavin. We don't know what we are having yet... but I'm holding on to Gavin with all my might haha. My husband isn't the biggest fan but I'm trying to get him on board. I haven't heard Conrad much but love that too.. just not sure what a nickname would be. I wouldn't want people to call him conny...
  • @leighry  hehehe I hadn't thought of the conny thing. Kids can be mean. Or really even just con. I'm not sure I'd how I'd feel about my son constantly being called a con lol.  Conrad is pretty short though maybe no one would shorten it or they could call him Rad that would be cool! You should keep putting Gavin around the house and mentioning it so that is grows on his subconscious XD

  • We're waiting until we find out the sex of the babies to decide because me and my DH can't agree on hardly anything. He throws out names like 'Thor' and 'Thaddeus' and, dear god, I'm HOPING he's just kidding.  The only name we've actually agreed on is Sabrina. Now watch us have two boys, haha!

@ICUnurse09 maybe a good thing about twins is that you'll both win? While you both want to be in some agreement on the name, maybe one gets your favorite and one gets a name he is more into. Although some names are vetoes by either one of you for whatever reason.
  • FiancBFiancB member
I'm liking Ruby, Arya, Isabel, Sofia, Maya, and Norah for girls, although some of those are getting really popular so I'm not sure about them. No idea for boys. Will worry about that if we have to. I do know we'd like to use Mae for a middle name for a girl (H's grandma) or Lane for a MN for a boy (my maiden name).

That's a good point. I'm not so cold hearted that I wouldn't want him naming his children something he really loves. But, Thor??? No. Just, no.

@ICUnurse09 well exactly... like I said. Some are vetoes no matter what haha. With our first I wanted Ryan which was my maiden name and hubby was on board until about a month out from delivery and then said he really wanted our daughter to have a "girl" name. We settled on Natalie which was another one of our favorites.. we almost named her middle name Ryan but I'm glad we didn't because #2 was another girl and we used it for her. So I guess it all works out somehow.
  • I'm a terrible person. We have a few obscure names that we've short listed (which is like 3, but we're not set on anything yet), but I'm hesitant to share. Hubby's got this stupid unique concept stuck in my head. And by obscure, I means they're not in the top 1000 on that SSA list. Is it bad that I don't want to share?

My other hesitation, as much as you ladies are all awesome, we're not sharing with friends/family IRL our ideas. The name choice for the last addition on hubby's side was heavily discussed by all, and I know my in-laws hate her name. They didn't like it before the baby was here, and they still don't like it.

Side note...when it came to wedding planning unique was his favorite word. Until I started telling him how many $$$ are needed to pay for it. Maybe he's trying to get his share of things now. Aha.
  • We love DS's name and want to find something unique and not weird again. (DS is Draken).

however, hubby is sold on Nolan or Easton for a boy (mn Thomas for his grandfather), which I don't hate - they're just rising in popularity. I would have preferred something like Declan, which I think goes well with DS's name, but it's also becoming way too popular.

Hubby is dead set on Summer Lily for a girl, which is what DS was supposed to be if he were a girl. I obviously loved it at one point, but am not sure it's the "right" name this time.

Currently other names on my girl list that haven't been vetoed are Peyton, Nolee (however a friend's daughter has this name), Arya (again really popular), Kinlee, Rune, Myrcella (def a got name - but it's pretty).

If the girl's name is anything but summer, the mn will be either Rose or Roselee (pronounced Rosalie).
  • Aerith for a girl
    Anakin for a boy

  • We don't really discuss names until after we know the sex.  I feel like it is a waste of time picking both sexes.  But of course I have some ideas.  I did learn last time that DH hates my top girl name (Eleanore nn Nora / Ellie).

Last time once we knew we had a boy on the way DH requested we use his deceased dad's name,  So we have Brian Elliott. I liked the name Brian because it is a normal name but isn't uber trendy.

Hoping to have the same luck with this baby.

Currently my top boy names are:

Harrison, Graham, Oliver, George, Liam, Pierce, Henry

My two fave girl names are Violet and Viviane.  Clearly I think I am having anther boy because I am way more focused on boy names!

  • @TwandaFTG I love your boys names! Graham was on my list but my husband vetoed it :(

  • We've had a girl name decided for a while: Maisie Elizabeth.

For a boy name we're stuck. We've been saying William Thane for a while just because we can't agree on a better first name than William (Thane is a family name.) It's classic, inoffensive, but we just find it kind of... blah. We're thinking Rory now, which I love and my husband is coming around to, but it sounds a bit weird with our last name and it sounds positively absurd with that middle name. So we're stuck. We'll find out on the 28th if we're having a boy or a girl so hopefully it's a girl and we don't have to spend more months going around and around on this.

I'm very sure my DH will veto most of these.  But since he had such a heavy influence last time I will use that against him!!  <insert evil laugh>

Last time he got two names (first and last) and this time I get two names (first and middle).  I feel like it is solid logic!

For a girl, we like Cassandra, Ruth, or Dorothea. I also like Coralie and Constance, but he's not really on board with them. I love Helen but it doesn't work with our last name. My maiden name was a lot more forgiving.

For a boy, we like Cyrus or Emery. DH likes Quincy but all I can think about is the Boston commuter town. I like Wyatt but it got super trendy apparently (although I don't know many babies, to be fair). Conrad is definitely on our list, but it seems like a stuffy name when they're a little kid! A solid adult name though.

It's so hard to hit a good balance- there's so much variety with girls' names, but not all the names age well, and with boy names there's not a lot of middle ground between super classic, too trendy, and too weird names.

I'm surprised I haven't seen Maeve mentioned as a girl name on here. It's such a pretty and simple name.
  • @lin0442 I love Maeve (and Maeva) but DH hates them both.
