Re: May IUI

  • Hi ladies! I know I am a little late to the party but I started AF today and just got off the phone with my RE who wants to do another IUI (this will be our third). I go Monday for a baseline. Hopefully third time is the charm. I am starting to lose hope in these IUI's and am wondering if IVF is in our near future...  sigh. Anyway, GL to everyone in May :)

    Me 35, DH 37

  • Welcome omarismyhomeboy - so happy you are getting to trigger and get it going!

I heard back that my bloodwork was officially a BFN... as I had expected from the at home test. My RE wants to move on to injectibles with IUI this month. I am concerned about the risk for multiples and the cost. Has anyone else done injectibles? I responded pretty good with clomid, so a little worried about getting too high of a response and having to cancel the IUI then. How many follicles do you have to have before they cancel an IUI?

  • Hi hoping over from the April IUI board! I just had my second IUI on 4/27 and will be POAS 5/11....I was lurking and saw that amazing spreadsheet (love love love a good spreadsheet!!!)

GL ladies! I'm praying to not go crazy during the TWW  :#
  • Wow, looks like we've got a few joining us from April IUI unfortunately  Nonetheless, welcome @omarismyhomeboy, @teamginger13, @JamieH2000, and @laur1212.  Let's see some BFPs this month!

@teamginger13 I remember you as my fellow lupus survivor!  I know it feels so disheartening getting BFN after BFN with IUIs.  We're doing IVF next month if this one results in BFN.  How many more IUIs do you plan to do?

@JamieH2000 I've only done injectables with IUIs.  I wouldn't worry about multiples necessarily, because they monitor you very closely and adjust your dosage if needed to make sure you don't produce too many follies.  They always let me trigger with 3-4 follies but we have MFI so it's not a huge concern since my chances are so low to begin with.  Injectables are definitely more expensive, but success rates are a bit higher so hopefully that will make it worth it.  Since I don't have oral meds experience to compare to I can't say this from personal experience, but I've heard other ladies say they actually had fewer side effects from injectables.  I haven't had any side effects with follistim.  I hope you do well with them!

Of course, thank you @Monica54321 for your wonderful spreadsheet!  I updated my IUI date on there! :)

    love the spreadsheet, thanks!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 yes! my lupus has finally started to settle down some. I remember yours being in remission, right? I think we will probably just do one more IUI before moving on to IVF. IVF scares me but I will do whatever it takes! Hopefully we will both get BFPs this cycle so we don't have to go thru with it!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 congrats on the wait for AF being officially over for the month!  Everything about this journey is so backwards it feels like! My internship is at a community behavioral health clinic in Coatesville, PA. I live outside of Philadelphia.

@omarismyhomeboy welcome to the board!  Is that name in reference to The Wire?

good luck with the weekend IUIs!!!  FX for you ladies!!!

  • @JamieH2000 - We haven't done IUI w/ injectables, but that was one of the things I discussed with my RE this week.  He said that for us (unexplained infertility) injectables would boost our chance for success by about 5% points... giving us ~15% chance to conceive in a given month.  He advised against it, just because of the cost effectiveness, and instead recommends going straight to IVF after 3-4 cycles of IUI with oral stimulants.  Our RE's policy is to cancel if more than 3 follicles develop.  I imagine this varies between clinics.  I'd be interested to hear the policies at other clinics.  Our clinic also has a strict single embryo transfer policy for IVF, if you're under 35 and have no previous failed IVF cycles at the clinic.  They seem to be pretty conservative when it comes to treatment... might be because they're a teaching hospital.

@teamginger13 - Welcome!  I'll be hoping 3rd time is the charm for you.  DH & I decided last night that we're just going to do 3 IUIs then move on to IVF.  This month is #2 for us.  PS - I like to consider myself on 'team ginger'... DH is a redhead & I'm hoping for some adorable little ginger babies in my future.

@BornReady - Yay! I'm excited for your IUI tomorrow!  FX!!   :)

@freudianmamma - I was wondering the same thing about @omarismyhomeboy 's username, lol!  I love The Wire!

  • I've seen that chart before. I hate that the success rates of IUIs are so low.

Still not sure if/when I will have my IUI in May, going in Monday for an ultrasound to check on cysts, but I'm not feeling hopeful.
  • My IUI will be tomorrow.
  • GL @LadyMillil and @BornReady on your IUIs coming up!  Thinking of you ladies!

@teamginger13 Yes my lupus has (knock on wood) been in remission for the last several years.  I'm hoping to have children before it ever comes back (IF it ever comes back).  IVF used to scare me until I started following the IVF threads on here.  I thought I was going to be doing IVF in April so I started getting active in the April/May IVF group and was actually really looking forward to getting started.  We were delayed because my clinic told me I'm eligible to participate in a clinical study, but not until June.  So we thought... why not try one more IUI since we have to wait anyway.  Hopefully we will both be successful this month though!

@Monica54321 I've seen that chart only too many times   It's actually the reason we didn't even want to do IUI #3.  But alas, here we are.

Just a side note, my DH and I are trying to make plans with some good friends of ours this weekend and of course now that I'm starting injections on Sunday night that is a huge factor.  For those of you who have done injectables I know you understand what I mean.  Fortunately it won't be for that long!

  • Thanks monica54321 and wifeinraleigh28 for your feedback on injectibles and sharing the table! I too wish the odds were higher for IUI! I feel like the odds of getting more follicles than I am allowed (RE didn't say a max allowed yet) may be higher than the 14% success rate. Definitely ready to try something new and with potentially less side effects, but would be very dissapointed to spend the money and have it cancelled. Gotta trust the RE I guess tho!

ladymillil and bornreqdy - best wishes for your IUI tomorrow! I'm hoping for some BFP in this group before I even do my IUI in 2 weeks!

Hope all is going well, and you're having a beautiful relaxing vacay!!!! My doctor increased my femara this week and I've cried everyday about the smallest things. Hoping all the tears are worth it.

Brushing my hair this a.m. and noticed a little too much shedding!!! Does anyone know if femara causes hairloss???? Didn't want to Google it..... it makes me paranoid lol. I'm thinking, after everything now I'll be bald too?!?!?!?! Bald and pregnant, I'll take that :D

Hugs and smooches have an awesome stress free weekend! Great luck to the tw waiters and future iuis!!! <3
  • Hello all --- CD1 for me and I will be doing a 5th IUI this month. We will be doing injectables for the second time but try a different dosage this time. IUIs 1-3 I was on clomid responded well but since I have DOR I only had 2 follies each cycle to repsond and mature. 4th IUI we tried menopur injectables and sadly I responded worse than clomid with only 1 follie respond and mature. So strange how our bodies react to meds and how different each cycle can be nothing is ever predicable I guess that's why most of us are here! Baseline is scheduled and hoping no cysts so that I can start meds and treatment. We have our anniversary trip planned mid May so we hope to do IUI prior to leaving.

I had my friend's birthday dinner last night and I was so convinced she was going to be telling us she's pregnant with #2.  She didn't!  I feel so terrible for being relieved about this.  I want the best for her, definitely, but my relief came from a place of not knowing if I would be able to hold myself together if she gave us news like that.  I hate being this way! :(

@JamieH2000- I actually just asked me clinic about this, btw! They said they would probably cancel with 5 mature follicles, or even 4 depending on the person- but every clinic is different. The stats for IUI are pretty depressing, but I knew that when I was getting myself into this... I am giving myself a couple of rounds of IUI before I have a serious conversation about moving to IVF. 60% sure is better than 9%!

Just got back from a day 2 baseline since clinic is closed on my day 3. I have a cyst :( this is the first time I have ever had one so im bummed I will be sitting out this month. On the bright side I will be able to drink on my anniversary trip in a week! RE says 1-3 cycles until cyst is gone mine is not huge so she believes it will be gone for June IUI.

@LeFemmeViolette So you keep using HPTs until you know the trigger is out of your system?  I feel like I've heard of others on here doing this.  Just out of curiosity, why do you do that?  I was told to just take HPT on 14dpiui and that was it.

@Starlight811 sorry about your cyst. I was just there, expecting to do IUI 2 in April and having to take the month off. it will go away and you'll be back in it in no time!
  • IUI is done. Had 70 million sperm this time, 20 million more than previous iuis. I start progesterone on Monday. My RE does "late" betas so I go on May 16. I usually get AF before beta, about 12 days post-O.

@LadyMillil those are some great numbers! Fx for a nice and quick tww for you.

Afm day 2 of letrozole, I'll go in Friday for an us, my Re said next round,#3, we'll go to injections but I'm really contemplating just going to IVF if this IUI doesn't work. Our dx is hypothalamic amnorhea from working out, which I stopped doing 2 months ago. But after seeing other ppl's sperm count post wash I think that's an issue for us also. DH's count was 9.9 post wash, he's been taking his vitamins daily so I'm really hoping it boosts his count.
  • Had my IUI yesterday morning. Quick and painless. DH's sample after wash was 12 million, but motility was good and they rated the sample a 3 of 4. My office likes to see 10 million. I went to my clinic's main office for the first time since it was a weekend (I usually go to some of their satellite offices closer to me) and it was crazy to see how big of an operation the whole thing is. It was totally packed.

My DH did have to produce the sample there as it was a long drive for us. A friend of his earlier in the week told him how he once was not able to produce a sample for an IUI due to stage fright and he said it got into his head in the moment. The place also didn't really have a place for the sample to be retrieved, so he was in an exam room and was told that the doors don't lock, which freaked him out a bit too. Unfortunately, all of the offices we use are at least an hour a way, so he better get used to it!

  • @LadyMillil & @BornReady - Glad your IUIs went well!!

I've had a fun, busy weekend with a noticeable lack of fertility worrying :) I'm feeling refreshed & hopeful, ready to take on another week. Also looking forward to a new Game of Thrones episode tonight!  Friday night I went to a concert with one of my girlfriends. Then Saturday, I had a girls day out with 4 friends. We started at a cute little coffee shop, then some shopping, followed by pedicures and a stop at a wine bar. The weather was terrible (rainy & cold) but the company was great... as was the grilled cheese and chili they were serving up for a late lunch at the wine bar. Perfect reminder that although things may not go as planned, you can still find joy in the alternate path.

Question for the ladies whose docs do NOT monitor follice growth with US.....when your LH surge is detected, do you have IUI that day or the next?
  • @LMart85 - My RE has me test for LH surge with non-first morning urine, then if positive, call before 3:30pm to schedule the IUI for the next day.

For those of you that have moved on to injectables, does anyone mind sharing the price difference from clomid (uninsured).
  • @MMD1986 - We're not doing injectables, but my RE gave us am estimated pricing sheet that has them called out...

  • @BornReady and @LadyMillil Glad to hear your IUIs went well!  Hoping to see some good news from you ladies in 2 weeks!

I'm starting follistim tonight and hoping for a good response like the previous 2 times.  I previously got some pretty bad bruising from the injections.  Does anyone have any tips or tricks to fix that?  I've heard that icing before can help, so I might try that...

  • @Monica54321 that sounds like a super fun weekend!  Good for you for taking some time out to do fun stuff with your buds.  My husband and I did dinner and a movie Friday night - we saw the new Huntsman movie.  I liked it! Then I went to my best friend's house yesterday for the afternoon and just taking some time out to chat and think about things other than fertility was so nice. We are both going through it so it makes it easier to NOT talk about it with her - oddly enough.

We had some scary news today at the clinic.  My endometrioma (endometrial cyst in my ovary) has doubled in size since I started on clomid our first cycle in March.  It is now the only thing you can see on the ultrasound when you look at the left ovary.  We used to be able to see the follicles in there - they were crowded and smushed looking - but they were still visible on the ultrasound.  Now, not so much.  I am scared.  The doctor still called with the go ahead for taking the follistim tonight but I am wondering about what will happen next month should this TI cycle not work.  The plan was for one more month before heading to the expensive and involved IVF.  I am not sure that is such a good idea now. I am worried about the progression of the endometriosis.  Feeling a little lost and a lot sad today.

Good luck to those who had their IUIs and are now in the tww!

Sorry I've ghosted for a week or so ladies. I teach and this is the last 2 weeks of school for me before summer break and it's been outrageous! So I'm just trying to survive right now.

I'm holding out hope for everyone starting their IUI and betas in the upcoming weeks!!!

AFM--I am expecting AF tomorrow, but haven't had any symptoms yet of her arrival so she may take awhile longer. I hope my CD 3 ultrasound doesn't fall on Friday because that is field day and it will be a NIGHTMARE to find a sub for. But, such is life and I will make it work of that happens.

I'm thinking of calling and asking my RE tomorrow for better e2 level monitoring. After having the last 2 cycles be a bust due to cysts (non-estrogen producing) and then no response to Clomid I'm really anxious about failing on letrozole as well. Like so anxious it's making me feel crazy. If we can monitor it better in the first few days maybe he could also prescribe follistim or something else that may help instead of cancelling again.

Any thoughts on what exactly I could say/ask them as far as monitoring and other drugs go? I'm so scared my body will fail again and this will be 3 cycles in a row that are a bust.

  • @paigeed - My mom's a middle school teacher and I know how bananas this time of year can be... hang in there, the end is near! I don't have any experience with monitoring or what to ask the RE for, just wanted to say hi & hope AF comes soon.

Good luck with your IUIs tomorrow @LMart85 & @omarismyhomeboy!

@freudianmamma - What is up with that endometrioma?  SO NOT COOL!  She needs to get with the plan and get her butt the heck outta here.  I hope your RE will have a good game plan for how to deal with the changes.  I can definitely imagine how scared & hopeless you're feeling.  Hang in there *hugs*

  • @freudianmamma So sorry to hear about your cyst, but I guess it's good news that you can continue this cycle?  Hopefully that cyst won't continue to grow!  I'm sure your doctor will be able to figure out a plan for IVF if that's the next step... this is their specialty after all so we have to have faith in their judgment! :)

@paigeed GL on the letrozole this cycle!  Just because you had a poor response on clomid doesn't mean you will have a poor response on letrozole, so it's probably not a bad idea to give it a chance to work before changing things.  I still think it's probably a good idea to do more monitoring so it couldn't hurt to ask your RE at your baseline if you can come in on CD 6 (or around there) for a check.  FX that you'll have a good response!

I did my first follistim injection of this cycle last night and didn't get a bruise... so I consider that a win! :)
