Re: Postpartum Thread

  • My back didn't necessarily hurt, but was very tender until about a few days ago. LO is 11 days old. @AmadorRose

  • @AmadorRose with DD1 I had soreness at the site of my epi and in my upper back/shoulders for probably a month after delivery. This time I have none, so obviously there is a huge range of possibilities, but I would say it's probably still "normal" to be sore 1 week postpartum.

  • Is it normal that my back still hurts over a week after an epidural? My plan was to go without meds so I didn't really research. It's not pain I can't deal with but it's enough to be very annoying.
I think it very much depends on who placed it. Mine felt achy/bruised at the poke site for a couple months after DD was born but felt totally normal before we left the hospital with Theo.

If it's more than localized pain, I would definitely recommend a trip to the chiropractor. My pelvis was all sorts of wonky after delivering DD, which then threw off my back. I assumed it was just the epidural and waited months to go in and it helped SO much, so I regretted waiting a lot.

  • @AmadorRose I've never had an epi, so I'm personally no help. My SIL has been having a ton of back pain since my nephew was born in 9/2014, and she blames the epi. She's only now seeking out treatment for the chronic pain. I would see what your doctor says, since anything my SIL says I take with a grain of salt.

  • This is the first time where I'm having weird back issues after an epi. But it's not really pain.  More like spasms here and there.  It's getting better everyday.  The epi site will probably be sore for months, but only if someone presses on it.

I had no pain at all, but my understanding is there is wise range of what is considered normal.
  • @AmadorRose I felt tenderness in the epi spot day of and day after. The anesthetist told me that it affects everyone differently.  I was led to believe that skillful insertion has something to do with what is felt after.

I am in so much pain right now. I had my 2 week post c-section check up on Wed and got the all clear to drive so I took LO out for some errands today and schlepped him around in his car seat everywhere since he's still too small for both of the baby carriers we have.

Big mistake. My incision feels like it is on fire now and the only pain meds I have left are ibuprofen. I hope I didn't mess up my internal stitches. :(

Please please lay low and get some rest. You way over did :(

Those internal sutures need about 4-6 weeks to heal and truly aren't healed for like 6 months. Rest up for yours and the baby's sake ;)
  • Is anyone having baby blues yet?
  • I'm 2 weeks PP now and wondering how much longer should I keep using the Peri bottle and witch hazel to clean down there? When can I start using tissue to wipe again and when can I go back to cleaning with soap in the shower? I have a 2nd degree tear with stitches, but I can't see the stitches. I can see where the tear is, but I've never seen the stitches (yes, I dared to look down there when I got home from the hospital lol). The soreness is vvery minimal. Right now I use gauze pads and witch hazel to clean down there after I get out if the shower, but I'm sooooo ready to shower normally again!

Absolutely. I'm really hoping I even out soon.
  • @loveymay I'm 3 days PP and I'm not even using the peri bottle every time. I never used witch hazel. I was told to rinse with the peri bottle, dab with TP, dermoplast and ice as needed. It was the same instructions with my first. I only used the peri bottle and dermoplast either time. I had a 2nd degree tear with DD1 and 1st this time with DD2. I took a shower and washed down there with soap about 12 hours after delivery and was not told not to. My understanding is it's more of a comfort thing unless otherwise instructed. I feel just fine down there, as I did Werth my first at this point, and with that one all checked out just fine.

I think im developing full on post partum depression at this point. 23 days PP and I'm becoming miserable and inconsolable. I signed up for a program called healthy start while I was in the hospital and a representative came by yesterday. She did a quick questionnaire and is sending a counselor out to my house once every two weeks starting next week. I might be back on medication within the next two weeks >.< I'm not afraid of that, I've just gone without for so long I had made the mistake of thinking I was "cured." But I know mental illness doesn't work that way

It definitely doesn't go away, though I wish it would. I'm glad you've reached out and that Matt is so good with Jackson - having help makes such a difference.

I'm sorry you're feeling so rotten but I'm so glad you reached out and someone will be there offering support and maybe medication will be the solution. Most women don't acknowledge what they are going through so you are ahead of the game. I truly hope all the steps you're taking help and you can feel back to your old self again. With DS1 I look back and think I certainly wasn't myself for 3 months. Not obviously depressed or anything very extreme but just not truly happy. I'm hoping to avoid it this time but I'm very realistic and know it happens to the best of us and I would want to reach out to the right people if I felt that way again, even to enjoy being a mom more. Good luck!!!

  • @mrstrax sorry I am super late. It felt like someone was squeezing my ribs. But if I actually squeezed my ribs it made me feel a lot better. It stopped after a few more days. Also my bras don't feel as tight so I guess it was possibly just the reshifting of my ribs

You probably can stop. I didn't use either of those at all--just dabbed instead of wiped. I've been showering normally too. Everything seems fine 2+ weeks PP.
  • My lil sister in law (9 yr old) told me yesterday i look like like I'm gonna have another baby lol! I don't feel morbidly obese anymore so it didn't faze me!
  • @mrsmtothek  yes.  Your body much like when you are pregnant requires added calories while breast feeding.   It evened out for me but took some time. I think in the past with my other kids I stuck to 5 small meals a day and it helped.
  • So far this addition has been interesting. This is #4 and my 14 month old is not sold on the situation.   She loves to look at her brother and give him kisses but she's wanting more attention from me only when he's feeding.  I'm trying to spend his nap times focused in on her and my 4 year old.  It's exhausting. Hope I find a routine soon.  Any recommendations from moms that have two close together???
I am pleasantly surprised that my almost 13 year old has really been helpful this time so far and way more into this baby than the others.
No ppd or baby blues for now. I'm surprised because the last month of pregnancy was tough with the impending thought of all these kids.  Having DH home for the first time with any of the kids is a huge help. Cramping has subsided which is great it was rough with this one.
So glad the baby is here and I can finally sleep comfortably in more than one position!!

anyone experiencing over production with milk? I've had the opposite issue with my other three but with this one holy cow I'm certain my boobs are going to pop.  The nurse advised to spend 5 minutes 5x a day self expressing to help.   Just starting today.  Wondering what other moms are doing??
  • Had a C-Section on Wednesday, went home Friday. I know they tell you to keep moving, but holy moly all I wanna do is cry. My ankles still get a little swollen now and then and my nipples are SO sore. I know it's because of the position I'm in when breastfeeding, but for some reason it's just so much more difficult than it was with my first (or maybe I'm remembering it wasn't this difficult?). One nipple bled my first night home and I got so scared I gave him a bottle. I'm still stimulating my breasts and having him nurse  so I can keep my milk, but wow is this difficult! It hasn't been any easier trying to heal from the surgery. Maybe that's what's different this time? My first was a vaginal delivery, I don't remember being in this much pain. :(

I pump in the morning and again any time I spring a leak. I'm trying to really build a supply, though, so I take every opportunity to boost production.
  • @AmadorRose  @amaniupendo  thank you ladies!

My Grandma told me the exact same thing my first day out of the hospital! "Wow you look like you're still pregnant. You're gonna have to start losing that weight." Thanks for the advice...
  • Has anyone seen a resurgence of heavy red bleeding after it had already tapered off?  I have been doing normal activity over the past week (I'm 1.5 weeks PP) but noticed more bleeding 2 days ago.  No clots but getting close to soaking pads every time I go pee.  I had a perniem tear with a bunch of stitches.  I feel ok physically just getting concerned by the amount of blood.  It's also stingy bloody discharge.  Not sure if this is normal.

It should get better soon! I was still sore 48h later, but on day 3 most of the pain was gone and on day 4 I even forgot I had surgery... Hang in there, keep walking, and it will get better soon!

Yes, I'm 1.5 weeks PP as well and I've noticed the bright red bleeding both yesterday and today.  I'm not super concerned because it does taper off and seems to come at once after I've been laying down for awhile.  I have not called my doctor but if it gets worse I plan to.

Same here. Also 1.5 weeks PP, I thought I got lucky because when I left the hospital my bleeding was like a super light period and now it's picking back up. Not sure if it's because I've been moving around a lot. I did have a couple clots but nothing that looked alarming to me. I see my OB Wednesday for my 2 week post op. Hopefully it'll be over soon.
  • I feel like my uterus isn't shrinking back like it should be at 2.5 weeks pp. Can y'all still feel a hard uterus lump? Is the top of it below your belly button? Please palpate your abdomen and report back! (Sorry if that sounds creepy... I'm feeling a bit of sleep-deprived mania.)

  • Nursing is still not working for us. He'll do it, but he pinched my nipple so badly that it cracks after two times and bleed after the third. Feels like shards of glass going into it whenever he sucks. I'm at my wits end. I've taken him to the chiropractor, a lactation consultant twice, and tomorrow I'm off the the pediatrician to check for a tongue or lip tie. Really praying its those because it's an easy fix. If it's not... I don't know what I'll do!!
  • @brenlo42 couldn't feel a hard uterine lump but that spot you indicated is tender to touch.

Hi ladies just want to share these recipes for lactation cookies...if time allows :)

  • @brenlo42 I think you should call your doctor and get that checked out. (And I'm normally wait-and-see.)

I know... I have been trying to call for several days now. Today is going to be the day, I swear, as soon as I have had a chance to shower.

How old is your LO? My little guy will also clamp down sometimes and it hurts so bad! We're getting better at latching but it takes a lot of work. He's is a week old and I still get the initial latch on pain even when he doesn't clamp,  and then it subsides when it's a good latch. Otherwise it still hurts and I try to readjust. DS1 had an upper lip and tongue tie that was missed by nurses and lactation consultants until 3 months and I was in a lot of pain for a long time. I'd definitely push for him to be seen if you think that might be the issue. You can find pictures of what it looks like online and check yourself. The good news is if it's that, it's usually a simple and easy procedure when performed at a young age.
