Re: Postpartum Thread

  • Is anyone experiencing postpartum vertigo?  I had it once MOTN and figured it was because I was tired, but then I got it for about an hour at 2 pm yesterday. Dr. Google says it's not uncommon so I guess I'll just wait and see. It's not severe but unpleasant and scary when home alone with a newborn and toddler. I don't think I'd feel safe to drive with it.

Anyone else struggling with the "6 week no exercise allowed" orders? My OB said walking is fine when I'm up for it but I'd really like to get myself back into the grind sooner.
Yes! I gained 55 pounds, Im a week PP and down 25 pounds. I have 30 pounds to lose (hoping some of that is more water weight). Ive been using a belly binder and my stomach is flat but jiggily, ugh! 6 weeks seems like a long time to wait to exercise, but at least I can go for walks. I want to be back at my prepregnancy weight by the time I go back to work in 3 months.
@mrsmtothek I feel you, but relax and let your body heal! You will have the rest of your life to exercise... if you do too much to soon, you could hurt yourself, take even longer to heal, and ultimately push back the time when you're back to your normal routine even more!
Ughhhh I know, you're right. Its so hard, I feel so fat and lazy right now. I keep reminding myself I'm eating for the health of my precious LO, but I've legit GAINED 4 pounds 2 weeks postpartum (after weighing myself a few days after delivery). I've always had a hard time ignoring the scale because I worked so hard to lose weight in the past. The gains are just so depressing! :(
Hang in there mama! Try not to be too hard on yourself. It's a LOT of change, the hormones are crazy, etc... but you are amazing and you're doing a great job!

  • My hips hurt do bad. It's like they're readjusting to him not being there and it sucks. Yesterday my left leg would randomly go numb but it seems to have fixed itself. Roo dexuded last night that he was not going to sleep in the bassinet and made me hold him pretty much all night. My mom stripped the pillow case off of one of my pillows and put it in the bassinet. So yay for a few more hours of sleep. Momma is finally getting rest. I haven't slept more than probably 8 combined hours since Friday.

I haven't had blood pressure problems all pregnancy and the first few couple days after baby came my BP readings were fine. Then suddenly just as they were about to discharge me they took another reading and it was really high. I ended up staying another 4 hours before they prescribed a blood pressure med and told me to monitor. Anyone else having this issue?  Last night before bed it was pretty high, this morning it was much lower. I'm hoping it was maybe anxiety about actually bringing baby home.

This happened to me with both my 1st and 2nd. My 1st I had no BP issues until after she was born and it shot up immediately after birth. They gave me a medication to control it (sorry, can't recall the name, it's been 9 years). My 2nd I had really bad pre-eclampsia....they induced, and then my BP shot up to 240/116 after birth. Problem is, they weren't monitoring it because I had given birth and they thought I was fine. They sent me home and that's what it hit once I got home. A trip to the ER and seizure pads and all that fun stuff later I was on bed rest for 3 weeks post-partum. Suckage.

This time around, they will be monitoring my BP after birth like a hawk.
Omg that's scary!!!  They put me on Labetalol and I have to monitor from home for now. I was so upset at first, everything went so smoothly up until then.
  • Is it normal from baby to not want to sleep in his crib first day home? He only wants to sleep on my chest. And as much as I love that I really want to sleep tonight

@jayeskylar our first night back from the hospital, my husband dragged our giant snugabunny swing up the stairs at 3 AM because we were desperate. IT worked! He always refused to sleep in the bassinet but we discovered that he would sleep in his crib. Every baby is different. Lots of people have success with the rock and play! Also, are you swaddling? White noise? Those may help.

I try to play some quiet music. And the swaddle. But the moment he gets placed down he wakes up and cries til he gets picked back up

Many of us have gone through the same, take a look at some of the posts above.

Yes! I downloaded Baby Nursing for the iPhone and I am pleased with it. Also heard good things about the Sprout app.

I'm using Baby Daybook to track everything, including when I take my meds and my older DD's temperature when she was sick.

I'm not yet PP either but was going to try the Glow app. My husband can be on the account too, which is nice so info can be shared easily between us.

I'm using Glow its awesome! I still use it 3 weeks PP to help me see how long my LO is nursing per side (sometimes he loves to go 30-40 min a side and that long is just not productive lol!).

  • Random postpartum questions:

    1. Am I the only one who:
    a) takes a shower with a bra on and washes the boobs seperately...LOL. (LO is FF)
    b) is already using the bathroom as the "mommy hide-out spot"  (spent 2 1/2 hours on the toliet today watching YouTube videos just because.)
  • @linzoirv showers are the second-best part of my day, right after post-BFing baby snuggles. My plan is to start getting up early, shower to soften my boobs up, and pump an hour or two before she wakes up. Sitting on the toilet is not a good part of my day because my poops are still pretty traumatic.
  • Going on less than 2 hours of sleep a night since the 6th.
    no clue how I'm functioning.
baby still won't sleep more than 20 min in her mommaroo or bouncer ( forget the crib and bassinet due to gas pains and a bit of reflux)
swaddling is the only reason she will sleep for 20 min or so.
i fill her belly, change her, swaddle and still only 20 min max.

i feel like a zombie honestly and I love my sweet girl but I'm so discouraged now after a week of this I broke down while she was crying in pain from gas last night .( we have drops that help but doesn't solve the problem 100%)

i fell asleep for a few minutes  while she was nursing in bed last night and I felt awful when I snapped awake. Not safe at all.

@thaisac1 I'm going to order a wombie and pray it helps.
    this momma is dead tired.

heres what Ive gotten her to take small 20 min or under naps in

  • @jonesl12 is there anyone you can call to come help you? She can't be at her best if you aren't - and you seriously need to be able to sleep to recover from birth. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

I started using the MedelaMe app yesterday.

Get the wombie girl!!!! Since we started using it, Luca has gotten into more or less of a schedule when he sleeps at 10-11pm; wakes up at 3am and then again. At 6:30 am. So i have been able to get a 3-4h stretch of uninterrupted sleep every night...
  • @jonesl12 I second what @AmadorRose said regarding help. I get that most if not all new moms are sleep deprived but yours sounds like a more serious case. I don't know too much about night nurses/doulas but maybe that could be an option?

I use Baby Tracker. I like that it has medications as a tracking option (really helpful for me to know when I last took my OTC meds right after delivery) and it tracks inventory if you pump and give bottles at all. Plus you can set alarms for diapers/feedings.

I definitely recommend an app for at least the first 2 weeks. Your ped will want to know number of feeds, wet and dirty diapers etc and there's no way I could keep a daily count. After the 2 week appt, you can keep tracking if it helps you to have all the data or not.

  • @jonesl12 Im sorry you are having such a tough time! Have you talked to your ped about the reflux? When my little cousin was a baby, she had awful reflux and screamed constantly. Once they figured out it was reflux, she started taking drops for it and improved tremendously. I also second getting some help if you can. My dh and I take shifts during the night. He gets up with baby until 4:00am, and then after that I get up with him. Is this something you and your SO could do? I hope your LO starts to sleep soon, so you can get some rest. I wish I had more advice, but I am sending positive sleeping vibes your way!
  • Anyone have suggestions for cramps? I can only take Tylenol because of the blood thinners and it's not even touching them.  The cramps are worse than any of the contractions I had.

Have you tried the Windi? Our LO hasn't had any gas issues yet but I've heard the Windi is an absolute life saver for gassy babes.

I agree with what others have said thougH. Try to get some help if you can. You can't take care of your LO if you aren't taking care of yourself. Stay strong mama!

Oh PP cramping is the worst!! I seriously thought I was having a seizure because my uterus contracted for so long and was so painful I couldn't stop shaking. The pain was unreal!

No advice to handle the pain unfortunately. My cramping stopped around 4-5 days PP (with baby #2. 3 days PP with baby #1) if that helps

Heat or cold pack. That's what my hospital told me to do if the cramping got too bad between meds. My cramping was way worse this time around. Apparently it's normal for it to be worse with each baby

Another reason to be done with bio-kids. I had no noticeable cramping with DD and I honestly thought I must have been hemmorhaging the first time I BF Theo. If it keeps getting worse the next kiddo might kill me.

Ok, that's a little extreme, but holy cow the first to second kid transition was unpleasant.

I have heard that it gets worst every child also! Mine were definitely worst with DS2 this time. But I am 3 days postpartum and my milk came in and the cramps were barely noticeable today. Maybe that is because my breasts are really tender though haha! Also the doctor said my uterus had shrunk perfectly for 3 days PP and a bit more than he'd expect so I guess those cramps really are useful  ;)

It has definitely gotten worse with each of mine. I do worry about the cramping with #4 this time. However, the l&d has gotten better with each one. Trade offs, right?

  • Does anyone know how long it takes for stitches to stop hurting? LO is 1 week old today and still in a lot of pain. I had a 2nd degree episiotomy. The only thing that really helps is taking the oxy they gave me, but I hate pain medicine because it makes me so tired and I hate the idea of taking it while breast feeding.

I tore pretty badly and had nerve damage with baby #2. It took the full 6 wks post partum until I felt comfortable sitting without easing into it. Warm baths will help the stitches dissolve, if they're poking you.

  • @shawnacrest I have a 2nd deg tear with stitches, and  Im 2 weeks PP. Mine haven't bothered me too bad after the first few days, but I notice if I'm too active during the day that I'm much more sore down there. Do you use dermoplast spray? I've been using that and taking ibuprofen and that seems to help with the discomfort. I think the stitches should disolve after 2 weeks or so, but I imagine the soreness may last a while longer.  :(
  • Thank you @loveymay and @kielpinskim. This whole taking it easy thing is difficult for me. I just can't wait until I can Atleast start walking again. It's so beautiful outside here and I'd love to be able to get out of this house for a bit, but I feel like I'm just going to make the pain worse. Guess I'll have to stick with just snuggling this little baby for now
  • Is it normal that my back still hurts over a week after an epidural? My plan was to go without meds so I didn't really research. It's not pain I can't deal with but it's enough to be very annoying.
