Contractions are about 5-8 mins apart, averaging 45 s, for about an hour now. They don't seen super strong or unbearable though. I am laying down. It's my second baby.

    What would you do?
  • @ashdawn24 honestly I wouldn't do anything but I'm the type of person that waits until my contractions are 2 minutes apart, lasting at least 1 minute and painful enough that I don't talk through them. I know when I get to that point, they won't be sending me home which is the goal.

Well I know your water broke prior to this so I'd assume you'd go ahead and go in? Hope you did! Best of luck!

Headed to the hospital as soon as MIL gets here - pretty sure my water broke (trickle, no gush) and contractions aren't fizzling. DH says its proof of how type A I am that I have to have something scheduled to relax enough for labor to start naturally (DD came 2 days before her scheduled induction for IUGR).
    Fingers crossed!!!!

  • Was having contractions yesterday, went to L&D last night around 9.  Contractions were 5 minutes apart but I was not dilated at all.  They gave me fluids and they didn't stop, admitted me, gave me morphine over night to allow me to sleep and more fluids, monitored me this morning and they stopped so sent me home.  I'm have a RCS and they prefer not to do them before 38 weeks unless you are progressing or contractions won't stop.  I'll be 38 weeks tomorrow...  Very long and tiring night, hoping this baby stays put for a bit now.

Had my 37 week appointment. BP was elevated and found +1 protein in my urine. Nurse was convinced I would be sent to L&D. Waited over an hour to see my doctor and she says "Everything looks great! See you next week!"

So I said "So my BP and protein aren't a concern?"

Doc: "Oh! I didn't even look at that. Hang on let me check."

really!?! What's the point of doing these tests/measurements if you aren't paying attention to the results! She came back with an order for bloodwork and a 24 hour urine collection and said we'll go from there. This makes my confidence in her waver quite a bit though. What if my BP and proteins were through the roof and she didn't even look at the chart? The nurse was really shocked I didn't get sent to L&D for monitoring though since I am considered high risk. She said the bloodwork and everything would be processed quicker that way to make sure nothing was wrong. This way it will be at least 3-4 days before results come back. In the meantime she told me to check BP and watch out for headaches swelling. She said if my BP goes over 140 to go ahead and go to L&D. I don't think she has much confidence in my doctor either.  :'(

Edit:// Oh! I also gained almost 6lbs in a week and she didn't say anything about it even though the nurse and I both thought that was cause for concern.

Update: water actually broke at noon right after I got the epidural (planned) and was at 5cm (90% and -1). Napped til 1:30 and am now at 8cm. This is so much faster the second time around! :)
My goodness!! Baby will be here any minute now!! Good luck mama!
  • @WiseUsagi wow I would be so angry! What a careless doctor!
  • Does anyone know when doctors will do a membrane sweep? On paper I'm 38 weeks but I'm measuring a week ahead
@cwyatt2571 probably depends on the doctor, but my office won't do it until at least 39 weeks (based on LMP/ovulation, not how I'm measuring). Some doctors might not do it until 40 weeks.

  • Welllll I developed a splitting headache about an hour ago. I took my BP and it was 134/92. Decided to lie down and see how I feel. I took my BP again 30 minutes later and it was 155/92. Waited again and retook in on my right arm to see if there was a different reading and got 138/89. So confused as to what to do so I'm waiting on the Doctor on call to call me back to see if I should go into L&D. Ugh kind of hope they do take me in because this headache is unlike any headache I've ever had in my life.

I hope they call back soon. That would be enough to scare me with all the other information you learnt today!

  • @WiseUsagi better safe than sorry. Hope it's nothing but good luck regardless!
  • So many babies coming soon!! Exciting!!! Full moon delay? Good luck ladies! Look forward to more cute baby pics.
  • I called in to work tonight, it was supposed to be my last night before starting my leave. But I have been achey and in pain all day. I felt awesome yesterday (but went downhill at work last night, on my feet too much I think is what did it). I can't move much today because my belly hurts so much, I think the baby dropped? And tmi but I've used the bathroom 3 times today, which is unusual. Now my lower back is hurting, but I don't know if its just regular aches and pains, due to having had 3 BMs today, or maybe the start of labor? Of course I hope its labor starting, but who knows! I have a Dr appt in the morning so we will see if anything is going on. I haven't had any other signs of labor. With back pain, does it start out as achiness that is constant, or does it come and go like contractions?
  • @loveymay my BMs increased when baby dropped. My back has been aching for weeks (even before dropping). When I get contractions I get some back pain that come and go with them. If I get many painful ones in a row my back pain remains till everything calms down. It's also hard to catch my breath when I get contractions.
  • Been in L&D for almost 6 hours now. After only about an hour of monitoring the doctor came in and said "You're having a baby tonight!"

BP has been through the roof all night. They put me on magnesium and I've had two doses of Labetolol already. BP is going down but still high. They inserted Cytotec about 2 hours ago so we'll see how I progress through the night.

They blew three veins trying to get an IV in so between the IV, constant blood pressure monitoring, fetal monitor, heart monitors and Foley catheter I can honestly say this is the most uncomfortable I have ever been in my life.
  • We got sent home after being monitored until 2am.  Contractions got down to every 5-6 mins and never picked up in intensity.  We walked and after about an hour they started to get farther apart and less intense.  The only call Dr was an absolute ass and made us feel bad for coming in.  The nurse was much better and told us to come back if they started up again.

At 37 weeks I am glad she is staying put but also disappointed.

  • Anyone getting foot massages from DH's? there are pressure points on the feet that are said to stimulate labour. that is the first thing I am gonna ask for if I end up being overdue/or labouring
  • There's also a point called GB21 in the middle of the upper trapezius muscle which is said to stimulate uterine contractions! been avoiding self-massaging it this whole preg gonna give that a shot too! can't wait
  • Thus might be a stupid question and not sure if it's been asked before. How soon are you suppose to go to L&D after your water breaks? It seems like some wait a few hours.

My water broke with DD, I called my dr. and they gave me instructions.  Since fluid was clear and I was not GBS+ they said get to the hospital within 4 hours.

With my first, they said to come right away. Now, the agreement I have with my OB is that if the fluid is clear and I'm GBS-, I can stay home until the 24 hr mark, assuming I don't have any infection symptoms. With #3, I was home for 21hrs after my water broke.

  • Thanks ladies! Unfortunately I'm GBS+ and I guess no point in delaying if it's section. Dr never really said how to go about it.

I'm GBS+ as well, but I was told that I could labor at home even after water breaks until contractions are 5-ish minutes apart. I'm confused now, based on some of these other responses!

Well I was told 5 mins too but I would think if my water breaks it's better not to wait if I'm GBS positive? Idk anyone have any insight?
  • If I go into labor on my own, I need to call when my contractions are 7-10 minutes apart for 1 hour and/or immediately if my water breaks.  I am GBS+ again and they want me on the penicillin ASAP, but most importantly, they need to monitor DD to make sure she can handle contractions (yay being high risk).

Call your OB and get their direction.  There is a risk of infection after your water breaks and often you'll hear that OB's want baby out no more than 24 hours after that (though this timeframe can and does differ between OB's, midwives, and other providers).  Another risk, albeit small, is placental abruption.  At the very least, you should be giving your OB a call when your water breaks.
  • @Jules08 thanks! All that makes sense.

Yes, I was told to call as soon as water breaks and that baby has to be born within 24 hours as well. I suppose if they want me to come in immediately they will say so!
  • Anyone else ever had a magnesium sulfate drip? I feel like my entire arm is bludgeoned with a hammer. The nurses must think I'm a wimp because they said it's not common for magnesium to cause pain at the IV site but holy hell it is painful.

Also they *thought* they were upping my Pitocin all night until shift change came in and discovered the night nurse never actually plugged the Pitocin drip into my IV. I may or may not have started plotting her demise.

So I've been on increasing Pitocin for 7 1/2 hours and barely feeling any contractions and only 1cm dilated and no softening. Ughhhh.

With DD I was only in labor at the hospital for about 1.5 hours and they hadn't run my GBS test yet so they attempted to give me the IV of antibiotics before I delivered but couldn't... We had to stay an extra 12+ hours at the hospital at the end of the stay while they ran extra tests to make sure everything was ok (it was). Not the end of the world but annoying. I am GBS+ this time and my doctor said it was better to go in early and get the IV than to deal with the testing after. I'm just hoping to make it in time to get hooked up!
