These are true stories that took place. You know REAL people who aren't making money off of you injecting your child. Hilarious huh.

Instead they make money off of people who believe their quackery.  "Mercola LLC reportedly brought in about $7 million in 2010 through the sale of a variety of alternative medicine treatments and dietary supplements."  I just find it funny that they are anti vaccine and anti prescription drugs but then go on to promote their own agenda (and pockets) with alternative medicine they are selling with false and misleading claims.  Oh and I particularly enjoyed that Mercola has questioned whether HIV is the cause of AIDS despite scientific evidence that HIV causes AIDS.

Around 7:40 he starts with the facts from medical journals.

This is a secondary source. Find the primary source.
He puts the sources there. You can read.

    Rude much?

I can already tell this is a biased joke and you're just using Google to back your delusions.

Have fun with your unvaccinated kid. Hopefully those around you are smarter and chose to vaccinate.
I'm saying you can read the sources he listed. It's not a joke just because it differs from what you want to believe.

You're right. What makes it a joke is the fact it comes from a biased source and is therefore not credible. I guess I should have been more clear. My opinion in no way is capable of making something a joke. Sorry if I implied otherwise.
Once you see these facts it's hard not to become biased. Why are you so against people who are genuine in their pursuit to try and save lives a different way? We NEED to know these things. Ignoring them doesn't make it go away. And yes maybe it doesn't happen to every single person but you never know who it will happen to and there have been plenty of studies and cases where it happened and raised a red flag. So choose not to believe it. Even though your brother had a reaction... What if it would have killed him? I'm sure you wouldn't still be standing on the side you are now. You should feel blessed that he is now okay and be open to the fact that others want to keep that from happening to their own family.

My brother is dead for unrelated reasons. It honestly would have been easier if he died back then rather than being through what I've been through resulting from his death.

If you told me you objected for a legitimate reason, I would have no problem. Hell, if you had just said that you object to putting anything into your child, I could understand that. The fact that your are spreading misinformation, that's what I have a huge problem with. The fact that you are okay putting other children and people at risk because "it worked for you," I also have a problem with.

I'm out- DD was up at 4 and I have to get up by 5.

I'm sorry your brother has passed away.

And that IS the reason I am against it. I think we could ALL benefit from doing things not naturally. I don't want to hurt anyone! That's ludicrous and would make me a cold hearted crazy person... Which I am not. You asked why I still feel it is ok even when you all have very boldly stated your opinions against me so I answered you with my own personal experiences.

  • And as far as me posting this... I guess I hoped all of you were just really nice people that could have discussions without being rude. Maybe it's just your hormones :)

There is a reason people get so angry about this topic and it's called herd immunity. The lives of our loved ones depend on it. Don't just look things up on the Internet and assume they are true. Any idiot can publish some nonsense. Talk to Multiple doctors. Talk to your cities health department. Those are great places to start.

I also agree with vaccination. Not only for my family but for those around us may be immunocompromised. Also, I work in the medical field and to say doctors don't know health is crazy! Doctors study medicine to help treat people when they are sick. You don't go to the doctor when you are well you go when you are not feeling well. Even yearly exams are to make sure you are healthy. Them suggesting that you exercise or eat well or even stop smoking is promoting ones health. They also advise for example that if a child has a fever to give them a lukewarm bath to try to help reduce the fever or things like that so they don't just give medicine.

  • Pharmaceutical companies actually make very little off of vaccinations as compared to other drugs. Vaccinations are only 2-3% of what they make money on and if you use logic here, you'd also realize that pharmaceutical companies would make WAY MORE money if we got sick and stayed sick rather than giving us a drug preventing that. But again, I don't think anyone here (no matter how much actual, scientific fact we spit at you) is going to change your mind. That's a good thing actually. Mothers doubt themselves a lot, and it's great that you don't. It's too bad it comes at such a cost to other people.
Hmmm the funny thing is... I'm 25 and haven't been vaccinated for atleast 20 years. I work with the public every day and get sick less than all the vaccinated people I work with. Maybe that's a coincidence but vaccines don't bring health. And what would you do if your child just so happened to be the one that had a bad reaction? There's not a lot you can do to stop a vaccine reaction. There's a lot more you can do to stop an illness. Medicine is useful but I don't think it should be solely relied upon for livelihood.
Yes, my love...that's called herd immunity.  Perhaps you haven't become sick because you haven't come across one of the diseases that the vaccines protect against.  That's what herd immunity is.  A very large portion of the people you have come across in your life has been vaccinated.  This is just an ignorant conversation.  I would like you to speak with some people that live in third world countries and see what they have to say about this.  This is totally first world privilege at it's finest.

Also, you didn't answer my question.  Are you going 100% natural with your birth?  Do you take any medicine when you are sick?

I'm done reading this conversation.  It's difficult discussing science with someone that only gets their "science" from totally slanted articles/websites like www.vaccinesarethedevil.com.net.hotmail.com

  • I am with you. My husband and I are not going to vaccinate our child. We are not born with these diseases and our body has everything it needs to fight off most illnesses. My best friend was never vaccinated and I've only seen her sick once in our in tire lives and when she was sick she stayed at home not "infecting" anyone. If everyone is vaccinated and protected why are they so concerned? I've learned very early that unless you're surrounded by a large group of supporters, it is best to not bring it up. Even though it has no merit, people will try to call child services and try to force you to vaccinate.
  • LOL @nlwz123 ".com.net.hotmail.com"
  • First may I say that I am so relieved to find this a science-friendly place.

OP, it sounds like you have been taught to be distrustful of science from a very young age, and there is certainly an internet culture that encourages that. It's easy to read things on the internet that seem to confirm your worst fears and just go with it.

At one time I, too, was suspicious of vaccines especially in very young children. But then I started reading more about vaccines and the people who defended them. The difference in the arguments of each side are like night and day if you can set aside your preconceived ideas. Anti-vaccine advocates appeal to emotion, fear and a sense of being in the in-group that knows the real truth. Vaccine advocates have actual, solid, verifiable scientific data on their side. Pubmed is great place to find good studies.

If that isn't convincing, I have a couple of questions.

Why are prominent anti-vaccine advocates always, I mean always selling something on their websites?

If the government is part of some conspiracy to make us all sicker via vaccines, why do they vaccinate the heck out of our soldiers?Seems kinda counterproductive.

Oh honey of this was even "kind of" true there would be no need for vaccines. I pray your child does not catch some sort of preventable disease because their parents want to attempt to prove a point about vaccines while compromising the health of their own child.

It only takes one illness to prove your theory wrong. I wish you luck with that.

Please don't talk bad about child services. They have one of the hardest jobs in the world and too many people make them out to be the bad guys. Have you ever walked into a home that was so riddled with heroin needles that the kids played with them as swords? Or had to see a two year old burned over his entire body because mom and dad left him with scalding water running? Any time I read these stories about CPS coming in and taking kids for not vaccinating or attachment parenting or free range parenting, there's always something to the story that is missed because the agency cannot talk to the press about it. Just stop.
I didn't take it that she was bashing children's services but rather saying that others unnecessarily call them on parents who do not vaccinate.
Also I spoke to a mother last night who decided to vaccinate her 13 month old for the first time. The next day he quit speaking. He is now 3 and a half years old and is just now beginning to pick up words again. So regardless of what the books say... These things are REALLY happening and they aren't reported in the medical books.

  • There are plenty more... So many that it would take me hours. I've read the articles professing the safety of vaccines as well as the science against them. I'm glad your father didn't die of cancer @wherewordsfail. I've listened to REAL people who had life altering adverse reactions from vaccines. Can you blame me for not wanting to intentionally inject my child with something that would be harmful any other way? There are just as many proven facts out there against vaccines as there are for them.
All right, I'm still on the second page, so this is probably covered, but I have a question. Do you receive medical treatment at all? Prenatal care? Take any medications? Any one of those things puts you at risk. Leaving the house on any given day puts you at risk. The benefit FAR outweighs the risk.

Skipping over 154 comments because the first place OP referred me to was a FACEBOOK PAGE. At that point I realized, this is a stupid ass argument. It's not my hormones-it's my low-bullshit tolerance for stupidity. I just had to say that I think you could have used the search function to find extremely similar discussions here on TB and not started a bunch of drama. You could also do some actual research and read through ENTIRE research articles (including discussion sections where things of great importance are often missed because untrained readers read the conclusion section without knowing how the hell to interpret results, understand sample size, or critically evaluate statistics). Take your anti-vax stance back to the Facebook Page and Jenny McCarthy where it came from. We don't have time for that bullshit here. Go ahead - report me.

I mean if you want to blindly walk into things without questioning then go ahead but don't expect me to. I have every right to question and wonder about all these people who claim to have had bad reactions and there's people who have died. If we don't question then we never have real answers. I'm not a cow... I don't follow herds. A lot of the Jews thought they were going to work camps with better conditions.... We know how that ended. I don't trust the medical books or these science facts (atleast not all of them) because the ones funding these generally are getting something out of the results. I'm sure you also think there is no cure to cancer? Another billion dollar industry. I know sickness takes place but I believe there are other methods and as a human being it is my right and my job to know about every aspect. If you choose not to do that then that's your choice but don't call mine bullshit just because you don't want to face the other side.

Please tell me you're not serious here. Did any testing prove the vaccination caused the loss of speech? No? Also, what 13 month old is truly "speaking" other than intermittent words and babble?

By this logic, if I get hit by a car later today, it's because I took my Allegra this morning. Please tell me you see that makes no sense.

Blame it on coincidence? Well there are simply too many of those not to raise red flags. You can create the situation however you want but the truth is this mother knows her child and she knows what is different in him and none of that took place until after the vaccination. Just because it didn't happen to you does not make it fake. I'm sure if it had happened to you or your child your perspective would be more cautious and you wouldn't be so quick to judge. Your car and Allegra example is not even close to being the same or making sense. Clearly you have your eyes closed.
