OMG. I just opened this thread for the first time. This is nuts. THIS is what should be xp all over the bump.
Fwiw, I always tip well. I don't think tipping shouldn't a thing, I think waiters should get laid a living wage and tipping should be abolished. If my service is bad I don't cut the tip, I complain.
So you think that will make ANYBODY have an INCENTIVE to IMPROVE? That's how raises work. You reward the employee with more money or you demote them or give them a pay cut if they do poorly. That's how you improve service.
Giving them a living wage will make them make A LOT LESS MONEY. Especially the majority of servers out there don't claim their cash tips on their taxes or at least not all of their cash tips.
Also, what incentive would they have to give someone 5 refills and many modifications while the other table only needs one and they order as it comes, but GET THE SAME FREAKIN PAY? HOW IS THAT FAIR? I know I wouldn't want the same pay if I worked much harder nor would I feel I deserved the pay I would get to just get 2 pasta dishes and 2 cokes with one refill a piece.
It's not fair if someone gets 20% for doing much more work and not be able to get anymore. That's not right. We have tipped 30% and more before for extremely excellent service. You can't tip that high with a living wage.
Any restaurant that you ask for a side of ranch is not a finer establishment.
NOT TRUE since at all the fine dining restaurants we have gone to Ruth's Chris, BR Prime that was almost $300 for the 2 of us, etc., I have asked for some ranch with the bread. YOU ARE WAYYYYYY 100% WRONG ON THIS ONE! You can get ranch at most restaurants or at least some salad dressings or condiments to have a dipping sauce.
I agree she is funny, but if people are going to keep pushing it, then dont flag for things that aren't really flaggable. I'm all for you having fun but expect to continue pissing the crazy off.

No, I haven't seen it. As far as doing something to my food, NO, because we don't stiff or leave bad tips to good servers, we tip 25%-30% and upwards to the best servers and I REQUEST the ones that give us good service.
@Springs1 Please don't call me - or anyone else - an idiot. It's not nice. I would say did it feel good to get that off your chest, but looking at your track record, apparently it does not.
For the benefit of people on mobile: If you look at 'her' page, the account has existed since 2008, but apparently only uses this account to search for topics on restaurant service and tipping and start drama. First post was in August 2011. Here's a sample of the threads 'she's' posted in:
NBR Post: Restaurant Etiquette - March '11
I would like to say this just once (about restaurants) - April '11
Not Baby Shower Related but Birthday Party (about crispy bacon) - June '12

Almost all of the above posts have some major exclamations about crispy bacon, from skimming her comment page. God help me if I ever get that worked up about pork products. Although bacon is awesome.
Apparently 'she's' fairly well known on The Bump as several posts have been dedicated to calling her out over the years, and we're just the newest casualty to 'her' crazy.
To everyone else: Yes, I just did that. Yes, I am that bored.
@Springs1 I'm very sad thinking about what kind of a life you must have in order to have an account that you only use to abuse servers on the internet. And you've been at it for years! Most trolls get bored after a little bit, but this is some tenacity! You are dedicated to your cause, that's the nicest thing I can say. I agree with PP and urge you to get therapy. Or at least a better hobby. Try reading (books, not forums), or knitting, or puzzles! (Scratch the knitting. Don't want to chance I might run into you at my yarn shop.) Puzzles might be really good for you! Especially if worked on in a nice, safe, white room with cushy walls, where they could bring you all the crispy bacon you could ask for, and you could sit in circle groups in between puzzles and talk about your rage about cup placement and people who tip too well.

I am not crazy. WHAT IS WRONG WITH BEING SENSITIVE? What's wrong with wanting GOOD SERVICE? What's wrong with wanting nothing or just about nothing to go wrong?

"Most restaurants" is not what she's talking about. Ranch is code for "can't cook" in culinary school. Self respecting chefs in the best restaurants don't let it through their doors. Self prescribed dipping sauces are also irrelevant if you go somewhere with exquisitely prepared food, likewise they often don't even put salt or pepper on the table. But you know, you'd shank your waiter if you found yourself in a place like that.
So you are saying a restaurant like Ruth's Chris is not a "fine dining" restaurant? I feel it is. Also, while I know it's in a casino, BR Prime, which is in Beau Rivage, the cheapest steak in 2011 was $89, for real, $89. If you don't feel that's not fine dining, then what is? That's TWICE as much as Ruth's Chris's prices. Both restaurants have ranch. Also, if the place doesn't, I will bring my own.
I agree @jellysparkles I remember when my friend got a job at an upscale restaurant in college and she was so excited! She came to me and said that the best part was that there was no ranch in the restaurant so people couldn't ask/complain about the amount of ranch they get!
Side note. I love your new picture, but I still think of Elf every time I see you post!

I wouldn't dine there then most likely if there were no ranch or I'd bring my own.
Who the heck orders an off menu sauce when they're at a nice restaurant.
What's wrong with doing that? It's not YOUR MONEY, WHY IS IT YOUR BUSINESS? Seriously, why butt into my business? It's not your money paying for the service, so it's not up to you to give a care what I do on my OWN TIME!
Who the heck orders an off menu sauce when they're at a nice restaurant.
Another thing, what does a "nice" restaurant have to do with liking ranch? I don't understand? If someone wanted ketchup for example(which I hate), what's wrong with that?
I'll just say it here...no name calling please. But also "idiot" is not really a flagable offense.
Why dont we just stop feeding the troll?
Thank you @Thomas930! I flagged because I was caught off guard and thought name calling was flaggable. Now I know it's only really abusive names, right? I wasn't aware of the drama on here until I was like "woah, someone called me an idiot," and then I started reading and figuring out what was going on. Sorry to ping you for nothing!

Chances are you'll find an excuse not to pay for the service, so no, you're not paying for the service.
NO, I don't "FIND" excuses, the servers CREATE them *IF* they even do, which most of the time they don't. It's not like I go around stiffing servers or something. It's rare when we stiff, not commonplace.

I can't speak for LalaMama, but I think she probably assumed that you were ordering a side of ranch with a dish that was at least appropriate to have with ranch, hence her generalization.
Just because a restaurant has ranch for salads, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is appropriate for you to ask for a side of ranch with anything else you might be eating during your visit.
It is reasonable to think that, in a very nice restaurant, one wouldn't ask for a side of ranch with most of their food. It just doesn't fit.
Also, Ruth's Chris is an expensive steakhouse chain. I'm sure there are people out there who consider it fine dining. In my opinion, that's a pretty low standard. I think of fine dining as Daniel or The French Laundry.
Yeah, we tend to reserve the flag for name calling when its really abusive or they just wont lay off. Say, remember the crazy name thread....that one I had to do something about because of the names being thrown around. Still love ya girl :-*

WHO are you to tell or CONTROL ANYONE'S MONEY AND TIME, HUH? If *WE* are PAYING the tip, *WE* RULE THE SHOW, NOT YOU CONTROL FREAK!
WHO cares if *YOUR OPINION* is what is appropriate and what isn't when *I* am PAYING for the food and the service? WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME I CAN'T ORDER WHAT THE HELL I WANT CONTROL FREAK?
It doesn't fit for YOU, but that doesn't mean a person can't order what they please. You have SERIOUS CONTROL ISSUES! WHO ARE YOU TO TELL ME HOW TO SPEND MY HARD EARNED MONEY?
My MIL abuses caps lock, goes through bottles of ranch a month, and orders an excessive amount of it when we eat out. She's also wider than she is tall, has adult onset diabetes, and can't walk the five stairs from her driveway to her house without taking a break.
The only thing missing is she is mostly nice, if dismissive, to servers. But we've known her to harbor secret resentments for years, so maybe? The only thing stopping me from calling @Sparks1 "mom" is I'm pretty sure MIL doesn't have the tenacity to troll the internet like this. I'm not even positive she knows how the internet works....

When I was in college we had this woman come into our restaurant every few weeks, she was definitely a regular. She was the meanest woman ever and no one wanted to wait on her because you could never ever ever make her happy. It baffled us that she kept coming back. We called her "The Dragon Lady." This whole conversation has brought me back to those wonderful times. Too funny.

Aaaaaand we now see that your reading comprehension skills are about on par with the sophistication of your palate.
Aaaaaand we now see that your reading comprehension skills are about on par with the sophistication of your palate.
I fully understand what you all are saying. It's not anyone's opinion that counts except for the person *PAYING* for their time there called a tip. If the staff doesn't like it, they can ask us to leave if they don't like it or serve us, that's their choice. Most likely they won't ask us to leave, because for a side of ranch they'd give up $150-$200 or so I SERIOUSLY DOUBT THAT! That's petty if they would.
@thomas930 I'm sorry about the flag too! I thought it was appropriate! I definitely understand better when it is appropriate to flag now! Thanks for being a great mod!
If you seriously haven't been to a restaurant that doesn't have ranch then I'm not sure what to say.
I have, Japanese restaurants. I usually get ginger dressing for my salad, which I do like. For Hibachi, they have a seafood sauce, I eat that with the fried rice as well as the shrimp. I actually eat it WITH the rice. I order extra. I am a huge sauce person.
