  • One of my husbands last names is Alicea. Ah-lee-say-uh. And people still say Alicia. So spelling on that more than likely won't matter gonna be said wrong regardless. Same with my middle name. Alis. Online is says it's pronounced Alice. Honestly didnt even know it existed cuz I made it up from my nickname Lis out of Melissa. And I pronounce it like the beginning of Alyssa. So who cares. My sisters name is Jeanna Jean-na. And she gets called Jenna g-Anna and even Jessica once! People are gonna say it wrong if you have a unique name. Its just part of having one.

Hi from Dec 13. :) That was an entertaining 9 pages...

OP- With your DD's sibling names, I think Adrienne would match better even though I usually don't like same-initial sibsets. Anthony, Aisjah, and Adrienne vs. Anthony, Aisjah, and Cadrienne. Adrienne works better there in my opinion.

For the middle name, I prefer the Alicia spelling over your other options, but I don't think it flows well with Cadrienne when spoken out loud.

@Kyllarae - Your story about disliking your name and its literary source is making me seriously question the name I have picked out for this dd since it's also from fantasy literature (Arwen from LotR). Now I'm wondering if I should go back to the drawing board...?

I know this is very much off topic and nobody probably remembers, this but on these controversial threads (or the ones that shouldn't be controversial but are) I get WAY more offended by people assuming that someone who writes terribly and has a bad attitude is young than the so called "race assumptions". Maybe this is because I'm 22 and pregnant with my first child. All I know is it really grinds my gears when someone is labelled as young because they don't know how to tactfully respond to something or because they misspelled something..... Proceed

I definitely agree with this. I get annoyed when people assume that younger mothers are automatically terrible and ignorant. I was 21 when I had my first daughter and I heard so many rude comments from strangers about my age. I also notice that age seems to be the first thing called out on the bump when a poster says something unintelligent or rude.
I agree with the last part. It made my night when the poster said she was 28. Well gee golly! There goes that assumption.

Exactly its sooooo rude. It makes me think "did you know that many many years ago 22 was too old to not already have children?" Aside from all that it just gives the message that you think its impossibke to have a decent conversation with someone who is "young". I do eant someone who does that to tell me, what classifies someone as young?
  • I can see why it would offend, but I think it's because most of us remember how dumb we were in our early twenties.

I can appreciate that however some people are far more mature than given credit for when in their twenties.

This is literally me. My name is Kyllashandra, pronounced kill-uh-saundra.. an eyesore to look at but even worse when people say it out loud. Substitute teachers were a nightmare. They would all just kinda stare at the paper and look confused and I had to speak up and say "You're probably at my name. I'm here by the way." It's awful.
@Kyllarae I haven't read the whole thread yet, but is there any chance your mum read a lot of Anne McCaffery books?? she had a character called Killashandra.

I also imagine you get asked this a lot.

I always want to ask anyone called Ayla if their mum read Clan of the Cavebear!!!!

  • Whew, I'm gonna go have a cookie as a reward for reading all ten pages of this crapstorm of a post. Also, I vote for revisiting the naming drawing board. Not a fan.
  • I would never be able to pronounce either of those names with those spellings.
