Wowwww... can I throw down my black card and say I don't think @Andrewsgal was being racist at all. You shouldn't just throw that out there carelessly - that's a shitty thing to call someone.
Yes we should always saddle our kids with made up names in case they want to be an artist or they could just suck it up and be a self made millionaire. Or we could give them normal names and open all those doors plus every other one. Hmmm crazy thought.
I wasn't suggesting the made-up names. But people don't all have to be Elizabeth or Mary. This isn't Orwell's 1984. Kane, Harper, Declan, Holden and other less common but not made-up names will do just fine in life.
ETA: I wrote this thinking you were writing in response to my artist/chef comment. But then I refreshed and saw all the other weird backlash to your comment that I don't want to align myself with. Because ... I don't think an explanation is needed
I agree and Harper was my girl name:) but the post in General was talking about this crazy made up name.
Harper is one of my girl names too Harper Jane, and ps this thread got real crazy real fast

Today was horrible because YOU called people crazy racists bitches.
I hire at the entry level, and I get tons of applications. If someone has a crazy name, they definitely go to the bottom of the pile unless they are crazy qualified. I don't want my first interaction with someone to be me stumbling over a name. Unusual- fine. Crazy spelling- no thanks.

My name is Adrian, and I've always hated it. Particularly since my mom chose the masculine spelling. So if you're completely set on this name, go with Cadrienne.
Also, we have a good friend named Elysia. (Ee lee see ah) So for the way you're wanting it pronounced I'd go with Alysia. (Or alysea I can't remember how you had it spelled.)
And my SIL's name is Elycia and pronounced like Alicia. I think no matter what, people will not pronounce it the way OP wants.
I was so sure we had gotten rid of it but then came mskitty.
No crazies over here. Today just wasnt my day and im not going to keep apologizing but everyone has their days and im not going anywhere
I would bet a million dollars you are young.
Im 28 and third time mom
Well sorry to assume. I do have to know what are your other childrens names are they made up too?
Anthony and aisjah(asia) pronounced.
So how many people get Aisjah wrong?
So far none... And she is 9 and has never had a problem.
Her dad chose her name he named her aisjah because shes mixed with asian lol. Thats what he said because he is filipino and white and always loved that name.
I was so sure we had gotten rid of it but then came mskitty.

That is very surprising to me.
How so?
Because phonetically Aisjah does not equal Aisa
I know a few asia's that spell it diff like my friend aysha and a mutual friend spelled asja so its just how you choose to spell it but ya thats how her father spelled it.
I would still like to know why me not liking your craptastic name made me racist. Care to explain?
Yes its because you were saying how it would be hard for her to find a decent job with her name and i just felt like that was a backhanded racist jab since people in my culture have very unique names. My family on the other hand have common names and i was looking for a different unique name is all but i apologize for calling you racist.
So, so, so, dumb. Name your kid whatever idiotic thing you want, but don't think it won't have an impact on his/her life.
Fitting into the mainstream of the culture the kid grows up in/going to live in is has an impact on their future well being. Names totally outside the mainstream will make teachers think they are less intelligent, employers think they are less employable, etc... Can this be overcome? Yes. But why on earth would you want to set up your kid with something they have to overcome right from the start?
BTW-- I'd have the same advice if you said you were Saudi or Japanese (and raising the kid there) and said you were going to name your kid Susan or Aidan.
Doesn't even take a crazy spelling to make a crazy name... Once knew a kid named Zebulon... My friend is an elementary school teacher and had a kid named "Shhhhh....Acadia Dawn." Now, Acadia Dawn might be a bit hippish for my taste, but otherwise an ok name... However the parents INSISTED that the teacher say "Shhhhh...." (which was part of the name), have a moment of silence, and THEN say "Acadia Dawn." Nutters.
I think the kid ended up going by Cadi (Katie) once she finally got a say in it.
Sorry to say but i thought aisjah was a-is-jah like that song aisha. My name is tiffani and i like it but people still to this day say oh its with an "i" and thats only one letter. And i married a german although my last name is short it gets horribly butchered; people even add their own letters. I like cadrian alicia but im not to fond of it to tell the truth.
I also believe andrewsgal is just very truthful and very blunt about how he feels. And some people take it as her being mean but she just goves it to you straight and you gotta respect that. Even if you dont like what she has to say.

Well... My mother named me nakesha and everyone has mistaken me as a black women even though it's from a Russian origin. (I am not racist!) but growing up I hated my name! I always got picked on and teased cause I was the white girl with a wired name.. Now that I've grown up I've learned to love my name but I still go by Nikki and have a hard time putting my real name out there.. The name you have is a little bit out there... But my daughters name is seanna Rayn and people love it so I guess it depends on how far out there you go.
I wanted so badly to stay out of this but I'm going to give my two cents, hey I'm a libra it's in my nature to see both sides.. To the OP you name your baby whatever you want and however you decide to spell it after getting all the opinions is going to be great for you. From what I thought you asked the opinion on how to spell the name, not on how people felt about it?? Or maybe after reading 7 pages I forgot.. I do NOT think @andrewsgal is a racist in any form, like a PP stated she gives it to you straight up. But I do have to say this whether ppl understand it or not implying something is ghetto can be very sensitive to someone of African American culture. It's just something deeply rooted that I don't think we should all dig into on this board. Granted her mom stated it and she mentioned it, co-signing with it is like saying too. It was wrong to call @angrewsgal racist and make comments @demodoll but she's apologized like 10 times and in my personal experience if someone says something about me and I know it's not true I don't keep it going or continue to rant and rave about it..
As stated her mother said the name was ghetto, and the comment made back was something along the lines of your mom's a smart lady.. Which come on get real, is a co-sign.. Whether it's hard for you to understand or not its a sentitive term, that here in the US was originally, commonly used to describe low income black/African American communities.

Not to split hairs, but, no matter what sort of racial implications the word might have today, ghetto was originally used in the United States to describe neighborhoods of "unsavory" ethnic groups immigrating from Europe (Irish, Polish, Jewish).
If you REALLY think whoever made the "co-sign" comment was being racist, by all means, continue. But I'd bet big money that wasn't the case and was just a really easy way to say "listen to your mother when she says that name is a terrible idea."
@Acaawkward I believe I stated I do NOT think she is racist, and as @mskitty1985 said in one of her apologies she took it that way because it is a term used to describe low income African American communities, and she got upset. So in whatever light the word is used it can be a sensitive term. That as I stated can lead to topics I'm not trying to go into...
I think she loses the right to get all huffy about it when she's the one that brought it up, but then I'm an Aries and it's my nature to be a pain in the ass.

OP, take this advice from another expecting mother who has chosen an uncommon name (given, it's a name that has been used a billion times before...just in another century. And with the original spelling): when you choose a "different" name, deep down, you know that it will get the side eye. So it's best to just keep it to yourself and not set yourself up for heartache by asking for opinions. So as much as I love the name I've chosen, I realize not everyone will so I just keep it to myself.
I also hire for entry level positions. Name like those get put on the bottom of the pile as a previous poster said.
