People are judged on their name. It's not fair or right, but a name plays a role in the opportunities opened up for people. I am too lazy to put a link here (because I'm sure we have discussed this before), but studies show that those with unique or more often names that are linked with a specific cultural group (I don't mean only one cultural group is screwed over, lots of groups are) are less likely to get a job compared to those with a more traditional name. So yes, a name will have an impact on a child's life.
ETA clarity
I don't know if this was in reply to me, but I never said a name wouldn't have an impact on a person's life. I said it wouldn't ruin their life. I think I've heard of this before though, and it makes sense to an extent. But everyone is different, and every employer is different. I'm sure not 100% of employers would choose one candidate over another with the same exact qualifications and experience just because they had a more traditional name. And if it comes down to it, when going on an interview, someone can introduce themselves as something else they've gone by, or their middle name or something. Your official name would only matter on paperwork I would think. Plus, there are other ways of "making a name" for yourself. Starting your own business, going into a family business, military, etc.

I think the big takeaway here is that, if people on the internet are already assuming the child's name would be pronounced a certain way (like Uh Lee Shu) and that makes you grouchy (lol, who wouldn't it?) then you might want to go in another direction, so you're not setting yourself up to be grouchy about something for potentially the rest of your life .
That being said, we're seriously considering naming our little beanie weanie Aurelia (if it's a girl).
I've seen Love Actually wayyyyyy too many times...

Andplusalso -- your child may end up being a chef or an artist instead of a doctor or lawyer, and a fun/unique name could run in their favor over a traditional name.
Yes, thank you. I was trying to think of specific occupations when it would play in their favor, but all I could think of was tattoo artist, bartender... While those can be respectable jobs, I didn't think it would play in favor of my argument. lol

Yes we should always saddle our kids with made up names in case they want to be an artist or they could just suck it up and be a self made millionaire. Or we could give them normal names and open all those doors plus every other one. Hmmm crazy thought.
Sorry but I hate made up names. Why do people think they can throw a bunch of letters together and call it a name? In addition to the fact I doubt your 30 year old will thank you for spelling her made up name in a cute way.
Nope, in 30 years she'll be posting on the April '44 board saying, "I'm keeping w/ a traditional name like Mary, my parents gave me a name no one could ever pronounce or spell, I hated it!"
Mary is a traditional name? I thought it was a Christian biblical name.
Are biblical names not traditional? I use traditional to mean a legitimate, correctly spelled name.

Hahaha perhaps your tradition, not everyone's.
This is lol funny when you are talking about Lala who you obviously know nothing about. Fact the bible whether you think it is fact or fiction has been around a long time ie tradition.
@lia619 Lia isn't such a strange name (is it pronounced the same as Leah?)!... but if the 619 is part of your name, I couldn't argue with you there.
I know you're not saying a name can ruin someone's life. You're saying it has an impact on people, and I agree with you. I also agree about the unfairness of it all concerning employers. I was originally saying a name can't ruin someone's life, and then you said "So yes, it can have an impact," when I wasn't trying to argue that point at all. Anyway, I think it was just miscommunication on both parts. Hopefully we understand each other now.

Like anyone on Facebook is going to tell you the truth. Take it from internet strangers that done care about your feelings it is a horrible name that one day your kid will hate just like everyone who is not telling you the truth in real life.
Im not friends with strangers on fb fyi they are all friends and family. I dont accept requests from anybody.
I am so willing to be bitchy if it saves your child from this name combo... It is terrible and sounds completely made up / cutesy-fied. Please go back to the drawing board.

I get it. You hate it. But you seem racist to me , sorry i dont want to name my daughter a common name its not a crime. Her name isnt even ghetto because i know thats what your getting at. And fyi its not made up.and besides her name isnt set in stone. You seem like your pissed because you keep going off about her name and im being polite towards you but thank you for your imput.
WTH I am racist because you choose a horrible name? What does your terrible choice have to do with race. That is the oddest thing I have ever read. I love uncommon names just not made up ones. Almost everyone here is telling you how bad it is. Just believe them. Or saddle your child with a bad name. Your choice. I am kind of beginning to think you are not the brightest person though so maybe that name will be just fine.

Are we all good after you unnecessarily called two members bitches after they gave the opinions you initially asked for?

I would still like to know why me not liking your craptastic name made me racist. Care to explain?
Yes its because you were saying how it would be hard for her to find a decent job with her name and i just felt like that was a backhanded racist jab since people in my culture have very unique names. My family on the other hand have common names and i was looking for a different unique name is all but i apologize for calling you racist.

I wasn't suggesting the made-up names. But people don't all have to be Elizabeth or Mary. This isn't Orwell's 1984. Kane, Harper, Declan, Holden and other less common but not made-up names will do just fine in life.
ETA: I wrote this thinking you were writing in response to my artist/chef comment. But then I refreshed and saw all the other weird backlash to your comment that I don't want to align myself with. Because ... I don't think an explanation is needed
I agree and Harper was my girl name:) but the post in General was talking about this crazy made up name.
Wowwww... can I throw down my black card and say I don't think @Andrewsgal was being racist at all. You shouldn't just throw that out there carelessly - that's a shitty thing to call someone.
Re: Which spelling is cuter?!

DYSENTERY
Um, I'd say no.
But OP really no one even used the word "ghetto" to describe the name except you and your mother and you seem really confused soo
