Well, I'm glad you aren't the woman who said her twins were the result of a multi-vitamin. @AnotherDreamer‌ :)

I need to stop reading that thread because another woman just said twins run in the family of the donated embryo she used.

Edit to add quote: "They sort of do. They came from donated embryos and the donating family had twins, first recipient had twins and so do I. :P"

So she transferred 2 embryos from a couple who did IVF & also transferred 2 embryos? Come on, MoMs; we should be smarter than this!

When I tell people that they're a girl and a boy I constantly get the comment, "You're so lucky!" As if two girls or two boys would make me unlucky?

Maybe I'm reading too far into that one.

Judging from the comments I get, b/b is the least preferable twin set.

Surprisingly enough, I get a fair amount of positive comments about my boys. My oldest is a boy also, so I do get a lot of "well you must have your hands full!", but overall having boys = a big win according to most strangers.

  • This thread is full of awesome. It makes me chuckle every time.

  • This is not necessarily exclusive to multiples, but I thought this was an interesting conversation from the other day:

    Store clerk: "Twins? They're beautiful!"
    Me: "Yes, thank you."
    SC: "So are you pumping?"

    :-/

    Uhhh...that escalated quickly!

Truthfully, I have zero problems talking about feeding, and we did actually have a nice conversation about it (she has a 5-month-old and was having trouble with the transition back to work). I was just so taken aback that I had to ask her to repeat herself!

    Baby Boy #1 born 1/15/2010

    Babies #2 & #3 arriving Spring 2014 (EDD June 18)

  • About once a week I push the babies in a stroller and pull DD in a wagon behind and we go to the park... It's a sight to see I'm sure. Today:
    Couple with three kids: twins?
    Me: yes
Couple: are you the mom or the nanny?
Me: (feeling flattered that I could pass for a nanny and not just a hot mess): mom
Couple: we were betting each other on if you were the mom or the nanny. Woman of the couple: my sister had twins and was a bag of bones the first year. Don't know how she did it.
Me: (confused...) yep, every day is a marathon...

I still want to know who won the bet and if she was implying I looked like a bag of bones (I do not) or what??? No idea...

Here's another one: the director at my DDs preschool emailed me to inform me that there was a case of HFM disease at the school. She then told me it should be easy to keep my two year old away from the babies as to not potentially expose them (she has one kid). Oh yeah, it's super easy to keep my toddler away from the babies while I'm feeding them or doing literally anything else. Seriously??
  • 12 wks with twins. Too sick to go out in public much, but I can't wait to meet these crazy people! I have no filter, so you should be getting harassed a lot less in the future. You're welcome!
  • Totally forgot this one: My MIL told DH that one twin looks like me (has my eyes and mouth) and one looks like him... My boys are mo/di. They look identical except a one lb size difference... Same eyes and mouth. Sigh...

I get the same thing all the time from friends and family! "That one looks like you and that one looks like your H"...

Um, they're identical, so no. They're honestly a nice mix of the both of us.

  • Yeah, we're pushing a 3lbs 3" difference now.

  • I actually had a store worker walk past us and say "Dear god, you poor woman".

My two were peacefully sleeping in their stroller...really?! I feel pretty lucky. I don't need her pathetic "sympathy". FTR, I didn't report her - I didn't even want to give her the time of day.

On the less dramatic end - I've gotten a lot of "boy, they sure look a lot alike - they definitely look like brother and sister".... well yes.... they are....should they NOT look related?!

    Some comments are just ridiculous!

  • Had a lady try to tell me that my boy/girl twins could be identical but that it was pretty rare.... I just smiled and walked away.
  • Oh I have to add, at a family reunion (DHs side) this lady and her husband were going on and on about us having twins and saying all the typical "well now you're done!" "Its the perfect family" and I just smiled cuz I was so annoyed I was trying to keep my mouth shut, she then said "you don't want any more kids do you" I just said "I don't know..." And turned away then she said to my husband "she hasn't been through labor yet, that'll change! Getting them in there was the easy part!" Um seriously!? I actually would want more children if it wouldn't take thousands of dollars just to try again lady! And no getting "them" in there wasn't easy! You just think you know how they got in there ;) Ppl never stop amazing me at what they'll say!

  • @Ylvelill It is actually possible that b/g twins can be identical.  You should check out National Geographic's In the Womb: Multiples video.  Here's how they describe it in part:

Identical twins are almost always the same sex, but surprisingly there are a tiny number of boy-girl monozygotic twins. They result from an egg that contains an unusual mixture of sex chromosomes, not the usual XX for a girl, and XY for a boy. Occasionally an egg contains three sex chromes, two X's and a Y. But if the egg divides to produce monozygotic twins, a chromosome may be lost in the process, leaving one embryo with a girl's XX combination, and her monozygotic twin as an XY boy.

This can also happen when the egg is fertilized with the male chromosome, making an XY egg, that splits into two, with one of the embryos dropping the Y, making her an XO girl, resulting in Turner's Syndrome.

I'm sure most people don't know that though, so it generally is a bit uneducated when people ask if b/g twins are identical or fraternal
  • I was at a shower and had the following conversation with my SIL's fiance's mom: Her: you are so lucky to be having twins! They run in our family too, so hopefully Tammy (SIL) and Jo will have twins too! Me: actually, it's only genetic if it's on the woman's side (this was before I learned not to bother with the whole genetic talk). We then go back and forth for a while, but ultimately she doesn't believe me. Me, trying to escape: well, maybe your daughter will have twins someday Her: oh, yes! Or triplets or quadruplets!! That would be even better!! Me: blank stare Really lady? Twins are high risk enough, but to wish quadruplets on your daughter? Moron.

  • I have to add one. After we had lost our triplet boys, we went on to have our son, who is VERY spirited, high energy, strong willed child. I've been told on more than one occasion. "Could you imagine having three of him! Followed by There is no way you could have handled it or You would have gone crazy!" I usually respond with "Yea i can imagine it, and i think about it everyday, and it would be wonderful!" That usually shuts them up. People are idiots and these comments come from friends or family members, not strangers . I can only imagine the crap they will say when they find out I'm pregnant with quads.
  • "You're an exceeds employee, but you took 12 weeks of maternity leave.  So I am rating your performance as average."

Ummm....shouldn't a performance appraisal be based on my performance not on my leave??? which by the way was approved in advance by my supervisor and I am covered under FMLA.  W. T. F.

  • The receptionist at the doctors appointment today asked if they were twins, and her follow up question was, "Were they born on the same day?" Um...
  • Our furniture delivery guy told me has twin sisters. I asked if they are identical just to make conversation. He said "almost, one came out like 5 minutes after the other". He was so nice I just said, oh okay lol.

  • The other day the nurse at my OB's office looked at my b/g twins (now almost 2) and asked me if they were identical. Really??!! A nurse??!!

I politely explained that because girls and boys have different parts they can't be identical. Ugh.
