  • We are 99% set of our names but when people ask we just nonchalantly say, "oh, we haven't decided yet." We told everyone DD's name pretty early on and talked about another name we had considered but people were WAY too opinionated. My mom was the worst! She asks constantly about names and even has her own picked out but I just pretend we are unsure. She will find out on delivery day! :)

We didn't tell for our first until after she was born, and we were seriously surprised at how mortally offended people got by it. Unfortunately, close family got all offended, too. We're having a boy and girl this time, so we've come up with a list of cartoon-inspired names we can tell people if they become too pushy so they'll leave us alone: Linus and Lucy Charlie and Sally Boris and Natasha Tweety and Sylvester...
So are they identical then?    LOL, I couldn't resist.  Sorry.

How about George and Gracie, Fred and Wilma, Barney and Betty, Pebbles and Bam Bam.  Oh, I could have fun with this!!!

  • The "little ditties" is so cute!

We have a little list for boys and girls names... we have a front runner in girls, but for now we're just saying we haven't decided yet.

We referred to ours as Alpha and Bravo the whole pregnancy. Their given names are Clark and Kent.

  • Just had to share...

I sat across from a young woman yesterday in a meeting who was 10 weeks pregnant. I know this because she made sure to sneak mention of it in every conversation we had. I remember the excitement of early pregnancy so I understand her enthusiasm. :) She thinks she's having twins because she is already "so huge" (I couldn't see a bump, but I'm sure she felt huge) and her mom's cousin's daughter had twins. So you could say the twin gene DOES run on her maternal side. Once I told her that I have twins she started asking about my experiences and comparing them with her own. Sort of annoying, but who knows. I'm going to email her in a few weeks after her ultrasound!

  • Getting a pedicure with a friend, and the gal working on my friend's toes (we will refere to her as "B") says,

B:  (to me) I can't believe you are having twins.  You look so small.

Me:  Yep.  I am not feeling very "small" these days.

B:  (sort of whispering) Were you a little disappointed when you found out it was twins?

Me:  No.  I was shocked, but definitely not disappointed.

    B:  I would be disappointed.

And the end.  Her crassness did not even warrant a reply IMO.

  • Sorry. I would have told her
  • I was asked earlier this week "what was my trick to getting pregnant with twins?"...We did fertility treatments but I felt like coming up with something really insane to say like we both danced around and then stood on our heads and ate pineapple to see if she would try as well!

  • A woman asked if I had triplets yesterday when I was shopping with DS1 and my twins.  I pointed to DS1 and said, "He's 3." Pointed to my twins and said, "They are 10 months old.  No they are not triplets."

I almost died when her friend pointed to my twins and said, "It's obvious.  Those two are identical."  Ben is 4 inches taller than Sam.  Sam is 8lbs lighter than Ben.  Ben needs a haircut and Sam is bald.  Sam is in 18 month clothes and has a slight build, Ben wears size 2T and has wider shoulders than Max (DS1).  Sam has dark blue eyes, Ben has light blue. They even have different skin tones.   Sure lady, they're identical.

I got the "are they triplets?" question recently too! What the hell, people?!

My grocery store is getting as bad as Walmart when it comes to the crazy and comments.

Cashier: "Aaahhhhh! It's twins!!!1!! I love twins!!! My grandma and mom both had twins I think, but unfortunately they aren't here anymore. I want twins so badly, they'd be so much fun! I just keep hoping, and wishing, and wishing...maybe it'll be me!"

We got a super crazy one today. My g/b twins look nothing alike (one looks Asian and the other white). But this was explained to me today. You see, they were conceived at different times.* When twins look similar, they come from the same egg, this is true even if they are b/g. If they don't look similar then they are paternal twins and they were conceived at different times. That is why E was so much smaller at birth.**

The woman was shocked that my doctor never explained this to me and told me to look it up on the internet. My husband and I were trying so hard not to laugh in her face.

*we did IVF; they are exactly the same age.

**E had severe IUGR and that is why she was 38 weeks and only 3 pounds.

  • We got our first "How far apart?" yesterday. The boys are now so significantly different in size that someone looked at me funny and implied that I must have somehow magically had two kids a couple of months apart. Luckily dad stepped in and said, "About ten minutes" before I could make bitchy remark lol

  • I am 31 weeks pregnant with boys, and I get "oh I'm so sorry" "better you than me" "two boys! That sucks..." "at least its not triplets!" and other things along those lines all the time. I get pretty annoyed, not gonna lie.
Oh! And i had a guy (I had met him that night at the function my DH and I were at) say goodbye by kissing my belly. Like... WTF. I DEFINITELY do not know you that well! That's reserved for DH, thank you very much! Of course it happened too fast, I just stood there with a stunned look on my face and told DH I wanted that guy to steer clear of me next time or I'm liable to slap him...

Yeah, my IDs have had a size difference all along and while N is catching up in height, he's still much lighter and comes across as "younger" than L....so we have gotten the "How far apart are they?" a couple times....it's fun to respond "Oh about 30 seconds!"

Last night our neighbor asked "which side" we got the twins from....I just said "mine" and sighed internally. :-p

  • I have a 50 year old lady at my work who has three boys. She makes comments all the time about how she's extremely jealous I'm having twin girls, because she always wanted twin girls and thinks they're just the sweetest. It's pretty awkward because what do you say to that?!

I have been asked this question several times now and it is really starting to aggravate me.  When I tell people we are having twins one of the first things some people have said (after laughing while congratulating me)  "Did you go though IVF?"

I can't believe how rude some people are and yet don't realize it.  Even if we did go through IVF, why the hell would I tell them or better yet, why would they feel it is their business to know.

Another favorite of mine is when people say "Sorry" after i say I'm having twins.  Sorry, really?!?! There are many women who would love nothing more than to have twins, let alone one baby.  There is nothing to be sorry for here.

  • It is still so, so weird and surprising to me how many strangers ask "do twins run in your family?"

Do people normally say "oh you're having a girl! Do girls run in your family?"

This annoys me as an IVFer, I wonder how the spontaneous twin moms feel about it!

I think we can all agree it's annoying because we know what the ultimate question in their mind is.... but I have been guilty of asking this and I think it's just the first thing that people can think to ask. I try not to hold it against anyone, but it sure does get old!!

I find it *especially* annoying because my situation is that my mother is an *identical* twin, and I have spontaneous *fraternal* twins... so I typically try to just answer with "Totally unexpected"... otherwise I have to explain why IDs are generally not considered something that "runs in the family", why IDs and spontaneous frats aren't achieved through the same mechanism, why even in the few instances where IDs are suspected to possibly run in families it's related to the nature of the egg or possibly sperm and not to ovulation like frats are, etc. So "Totally unexpected" is the most that a non-MoM would get from me (honestly I'd usually avoid the convo all together if you're not a geneticist LOL)

  • My update from crazyland since the boys are getting out more now:

lady looks at my boys (knowing they were boys), pinches Caleb’s cheeks and says “you look more like a little girl.” Then points at John and says “but you look like a little boy”

Another lady looks at my sleeping baby John and says “oh, sleeping babies are so so cute” and proceeds to try and pinch his cheeks. (She was also amazed that I physically stopped her from touching and waking the sleeping baby.)

    I feel sorry for you

Wow, do they have the same Dad? (I count this as a comment since I didn’t respond)

That one (oddly pointing to Caleb, the thinner one) is too fat, you need to feed him less and her (pointing to John) more.

Oh look at you, you’re so adorable. But don’t worry, there always has to be one that isn’t as cute. (not sure who’s the no so cute one)
