@jecrae My second son’s middle name is Marshall. He goes by that name sometimes. At his ju jitsu gym he told his couch to call him Marshall. It’s a good solid name.
DH really wants a Biblical name but I have a weird issue with nicknames. I don’t like them at all. His family insists on trying to shorten my kid’s already short names and I end up having to get stern and confrontational to make them stop. So I’m drawn towards Isaac. There aren’t any super common nicknames for that name. It flows well with the other kid’s names. His middle name will be William for sure. I’m not budging on this one. My dad recently passed and that was his name and it’s also my grandfather’s middle name. I have also looked at over 2000 names and none of them appeal to me. Even when I was looking at girl names none of those appealed to me either. 😆
MH and I have each picked a name and are now campaigning against each other 😂 His pick is Ronan A.lexander and my pick is Ciaran M.alcolm. Middle names are family names. I don’t know how this will play out or if we will simply be rock paper scissor duelling in the hospital.
We have a boy's name, I think, but we can't agree on a girl's name. Half of the suggestions I give, DH thinks I made them up (he's never heard the name Paisley??). I'm letting the boy's name stew a bit before I share with anyone
Now that we know it’s a boy I am at a loss. Frederick Joseph (nn Freddie) is what keeps coming to mind. The other name we’re trying out is Sean but not sure about middle. Neither of them is super exciting and I’m just not sure I’ll actually feel like any name is THE one. We like traditional (DS has a biblical name which I also like although DH doesn’t care) but uncommon, ideally out of the top 200.
My SIL is pregnant with a boy and they are copying us by not sharing their name. We were pregnant together last time and they shared their name right away and we didn’t until birth. So now they aren’t sharing their name choice with us. It may just be us too because I know my MIL knows the name. I’m confident we won’t have the same taste in names. However, I’m not changing my name choice and she is due before us. If we end up with the same name someone is just going to need to go by a nickname. I got news for everyone, it won’t be my baby that does.
@emeraldcity603 lol I love that. Isaac is a great name and it’d be on my list if a friend hadn’t just used it.
I’m also diving into saints’ names as my family is Catholic. There’s a Catholic mom blogger I like (Camp Patton) and she has the most lovely names for her 9 kids, many of whom are boys. Clement, Sebastian, Bosco, Felix. I wonder if we can find something kind of obscure that still feels classic by diving into church history. I could truly ramble on about names all day long; thanks for reading 😂
We're set on Rosie for baby girl's nickname, but still at an impasse on what her full name is -- I want Rosalie, but my husband wants Rosemary. I'm not opposed to that (Rosemary Clooney!) but I just prefer Rosalie, on its own and in cadence with middle names. All three grandkids in the family so far have two middle names, so Rosie will too -- my preference is Katherine Ruth (my MIL's name, and my mom's middle name) but I'm open to discussion on the first one (I'm pretty set on Ruth though).
I also didn't realize until this weekend, when a friend happily told me, but I'm apparently Charlotte York from Sex and the City because my first daughter is Lilly and this one is Rosie, and I guess that's what they named their girls. I didn't know that (I watched the show off and on in college but not really since) so I'm sort of hoping that's died off and no one else notices because the last thing I want is a comparison to that show. Oh well.
@pickle-chips DH and I were like this both times. It infuriated me the first time because I wanted to make wall art with the name but that never happened. My first daughter didn’t have a name for 12 hours and it came down to his pick and mine, and he said “well what do you want”. I obviously picked the name I wanted, Natalie. Our second I was prepared to not pick until after birth. We had two names again and when she was born he asked me what I wanted and I picked. We did both agree on middle names so we knew those going in. We picked family names.
This baby, I have no idea. I’m saving my energy for when we find out. I have no idea for middle names this time either. Our first we used my middle name and our second we used a middle name from his side. Maybe we will look back through family names and find a similar middle name for this one 🤷🏻♀️
For a boy I want either Max or Charlie. And girl I like Lydia. Lydia was my second pick last time. We currently have a Natalie and Emma.
Oooh @novelblessings I love your taste in names! Charlie is my husband’s name.
I made a name list in a google doc and am waiting for DH to decide he’s interested enough to dive into it 🤷♀️ I wish he would engage!! My list is long and I feel like I don’t have any favorites. Boy names are hard!
@ccmrc143 thanks! Charlie is actually a family name on my side. Charles Sr. was my grandfather, my dad is Charles but goes by Charlie and my brothers middle name is Charles. My brother had all girls, so it stopped with him. I feel it fitting to use if we end up with the only boy. Not sure how DH feels about it. Maybe using his dad’s middle name, Allen.
Who knows this could be girl #3. Both my girls are convinced it’s a girl.
Hi, Catholic here so bear with the saint names lol. We have had Benedict as our number 1 since even before getting married, so we are totally excited for baby boy! We realized he may be born on a Marian feast day, so we are thinking of going slightly out of the box and naming him Benedict Mary (even if it isn't that day because we've come to love it!).
We also tossed around the idea of Paul because he is awesome, potentially Paul Tarcisius. (@ccmrc143 here is your obscure but epic saint suggestion lol!) Best wishes with your name hunt friends!
Tarcisius! Wow that is obscure. Benedict is lovely @mrskoehl and funnily enough I’ve been thinking about Francis 😂 My husband doesn’t care at all about catholic naming conventions so I’ll probably lose out but it’s such a fun rabbit hole.
@ccmrc143@mrskoehl my neighbor is a former Catholic missionary, and I used to do Bible study at her house with a few other Catholic gals (not Catholic myself, I'm PCA, the conservative branch of Presbyterian). She's a total treasure trove of Catholic obscurity (and a huge Pope Benedict fan) and is due with her third baby in May so I'm sure we'll get an awesome historic name for this one. It's been so fun learning from her, even if it isn't a doctrinal thing for me -- lots of church history a lot of protestant churches forget about. So obviously I had to go Google to figure out the Tarcisius reference (yay for being accurate in what I thought it was!). I'm a huge believer that names have meaning so even though mine isn't a Christian reference (at least for her first two names -- I have a Lillian Liberty Grace now) it's still meaningful, and I just love that you both are looking at names that reflect your faith.
I’m Christian and we are choosing a biblical name for the middle name 😊 first name is ancient and I’m excited because I’ve never met or heard anyone with it.
Just coming back here to say that I got DH to engage in our list…we now have a table in a spreadsheet with ratings and comments 😂 but his engagement ended in more vetoes and I just have no clue what this baby boy will be called. I’ve been pushing Walter lately (nn Wally or Walt) but DH is meh on it. Walter is a saint’s name too! I suppose I don’t love the Disney association though. My next place to look will be my grandmother’s family history books (she writes them for fun)! It would be so neat if a long lost family member had a name that really stuck out to us, and it would mean so much to my grandmother who just turned 92. Fingers crossed there’s a hidden gem
We’ve got our girl name picked out! But absolutely stumped on a boy name, not even close. The boy name I’ve always liked is Jace. But, my husband and I both have J names. I don’t think I love doing JJJ for all of us. But at this point I am getting nowhere with any other boy names.
Now that we know the sex, it’s time to focus on boy names. Middle name is most likely Oakley, which I’m excited about. It’s an old family name on my side that stopped when my great grandfather only had daughters. DS and SO share a middle name with SO’s dad, and grandpa- going back 8 generations now. So it’s my turn to pick names lol
First name, I do technically have final say, but want us to come to a consensus. I’m thinking Theodore or Dorian. SO is leaning more Jonathan or William. I work in a preschool and I will admit, aside from one 5 year old recently, there are not little kids with those older names in our area at least. I’m sure they are somewhere.
It’ll be a long second half of pregnancy, and if it’s anything like our first, the list will grow longer and then we’ll forget to look at it when he’s born
Ohhh @tumbleweed-1 I like your taste! Dorian is so interesting and uncommon. I’m seeing a lot of Theo/Theodore in my network but otherwise I haven’t seen any of those other names lately.
I started considering Robert after my favorite uncle (who is still alive). We’d nick name Robby. But I like finding first names that are unique to the baby and using the middle spot for family. so nothing is standing out to us and I have a sense this little guy won’t have a name for a few days after he’s born. Why are boys names impossible???
Although we don’t find out until next week I briefly asked my husband what he thought for names. With our last two we just never could meet in the middle so it would come down to one name he liked and one name I liked until the girls were born. I told him right now I’m stuck on Sophie for a girl and Max for a boy. He didn’t seem to fight back on either. Now middle names are a while other issue lol. He wants Esther for a girl or his middle name Keith for a boy. We threw around Esther last time but I didn’t end up liking it. Keith on the other hand is my ex boyfriends name, I just can’t see using it even if it’s a family name. But he insists if it’s a boy their middle name will be Keith. 😬
@gingermama29@tumbleweed-1 ah DH also really likes Henry and I’m like yes me too but it’s truly everywhere! At least in our circles. I bet it’s different all over though. It seems like we got a bullseye with DS name and I just want to feel as confident and in love with whatever we choose for this one. My quest into family history hasn’t brought any promising results so far. I’ve covered the Italian side so next up is the Irish side.
Haha I realized I never actually said what name we’re thinking earlier. Jamie Ryan is likely our winner. Just deciding if he’ll be a James that we’d call Jamie or if we just go right to Jamie.
@ccmrc143 I also fel like we got the bullseye with DD's name and now we are struggling to name the second one. We need a Hindu name, short and easy to pronounce for non-Indians, and goes with the middle name Priya - that has not already been taken by our large extended families!
Naming our baby very soon has become a priority. Now that he’s his very own cardiology patient, and since we truly don’t know how long he’ll be with us, I want to start calling him by name. Today my husband mentioned Oscar. It feels so strong to me. It is Irish and it means “champion warrior”. And there is a catholic saint Oscar Romero! He was assassinated while serving mass in El Salvador due to his commitment to standing up for the poor and speaking out against extremist groups on both the left and the right. He was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. I am feeling almost ready to commit. No clue on a middle name! Something from the family, maybe, but just not sure who. William or Joseph after our dads? Charles after DH? Our last name is one syllable so flow can be tough with that.
@ccmrc143 those sound like great options! We leaned into family names for middle names with all the kiddos. Made it easy. I know I always have to test the name out a few times before I really like the flow.
Boy names are hard. Now that I know; I was more set on girls names so I’m not attached to my list of boy names. Today I realized Max gives him the same initials as DH. DH is a Matt 🤦🏻♀️ Not sure how I feel about it but he didn’t wince at the idea. But now I also like Luke. I’m just not sure how that flows with Keith. Luke Keith….It sounds like I am stuck with Keith as a middle name according to DH. I guess I’ll let him have it if I get to pick the first name.
Hi everyone! I'd love some opinions about a couple names. Our last name ends in "ey" and I'm wondering if Hallie sounds strange with a last name ending in the same sound? My husband doesn't think so, but I do. Otherwise, we're leaning towards Aria. Thoughts on those names? Thanks!
Our last name ends in “son” so I understand the struggle. I have to be okay with how the name sounds all together. All three names have to flow. And now that I’m on my third pregnancy, I have to make sure this baby’s name flows with the first two kids’ names.
I’d say if you don’t like how it sounds or are unsure, go with something else.
This time around we can’t agree at all. So I have taken to calling baby a different name every week hoping something sticks.
Re: Baby Names Thread
my 3 year old has already named him Marshall after his favorite paw patrol character and honestly it may stick lol!
Frederick Joseph (nn Freddie) is what keeps coming to mind. The other name we’re trying out is Sean but not sure about middle. middle name is the same as MIL so spelling comes from that.
I also didn't realize until this weekend, when a friend happily told me, but I'm apparently Charlotte York from Sex and the City because my first daughter is Lilly and this one is Rosie, and I guess that's what they named their girls.
