Upcoming Appointments: Waiting on OB office to schedule anatomy scan

How are you feeling?: Been having trouble sleeping without developing back pain the last week or so, which has led to lower energy levels. Yesterday was particularly bad. I'm trying to hold out and avoid the monstrous pregnancy pillow I had last pregnancy, so I ordered a wedge pillow that has 2 wedges - one for front and back. I suspect I need the back support.

Rants/Raves: Rave - I had Columbus Day off, but DD did not (i.e. she still had preschool). Hubby and I ate lunch at a restaurant by ourselves for the first time in over 2.5 years. Rant - I miss icy hot and ibuprofen so much. The constant back pain sucks.

I'm really into knitting. One of my first trimester symptoms across both pregnancies has actually been that I stop knitting so this photo is of a pair of socks I made for my mom's birthday that I finished right before I found out I was pregnant. The colors are based off Beauty and the Beast which is her favorite movie. I have picked knitting back up in the past week or so; I have a pair of baby pants and a baby blanket on the needles, but neither are far enough along to make good photos.

@noxacanthus I also couldn’t knit for a solid 4 months at the start of this pregnancy! I luckily was almost done my daughters sweater so I didn’t have to force myself too much to finish that off. I just cast on a baby blanket, and am half done a sweater that I started in April 😅

How are you feeling?: Great

Rants/Raves: Rant: I can't stand that I haven't been exercising. I really want to be as strong as possible for labor and delivery, but I need to prioritize and plan better. Meanwhile, my husband is out running half marathons, getting up at 5:30 to run, and just generally making me look bad

Rave: I'm really happy to be reaching 20 weeks this week. Especially given my history of loss, it's a huge milestone for me.

Questions: Related to this week's GTKY question, did any of you STM+s intentionally or just happen to start new hobbies before or after your kids were born (when you became a mom), for whatever reason? I'm a huge reader, but I feel kind of motivated to learn some craft like knitting because I feel it would be a good anti-stress/anxiety pastime for me and that my kids could only benefit from a happy, chilled-out mom. And I think it would be cool for them to see me setting an example of using my free time to make productive and tangible things with my hands, not just consuming media (books/phone/TV).

GTKY: I really like to cook and bake. One thing I make fairly regularly is biscotti. Our last apartment didn't have an oven, so I'd make it in our toaster oven. When there's a will...

@muggsd Last time, instead of picking knitting back up in the 2nd trimester, I started crocheting. It just worked for the headspace that I was in (we were also in the middle of a move from Japan to CT, so mildly stressful, haha). So DD's baby blanket is crocheted. This time around I am knitting the blanket out of a rainbow gradient yarn the store sold in kits

@missmuisq Reading is not a bad habit to set an example with. DD will see me reading on the couch and then go get a book of her own to "read" next to me. I think it's just as important to learn that it's ok to have non-productive hobbies for your mental health. As long as it makes you happy, the kids will benefit from a happy mom.

How are you feeling?: pregnancy insomnia is creeping in and lower back pain. I was able to get a good workout in finally a couple days ago and a long walk yesterday. That’s felt good!

Rants/Raves: Rave: found a cute consignment store for kids/baby clothes and they had a ton of maternity! I got a couple pairs of pants and I am feeling good about not buying new.

I love cooking and making up recipes. I generally take a couple different ideas and then just wing it and make something fun. Glad the morning (all day) sickies are over so I can finally enjoy cooking again.

How are you feeling?: Today I feel like I got hit by a truck: super fatigued and headachy. Generally though I’m getting much more energy, which is cool. Food has been hit or miss, especially meats.

Rants/Raves: Rant: Ummm apparently our sweet pup is a squirrel killing maniac!? Two dead squirrels in 24 hours. She is part terrier so she’s always be on alert for them but I popped my head outside to check on her yesterday and was like “Aww looks how cute and happy she is tossing her toy around like that…wait. She does not have that type of toy outside OH GOD NO.” Husband cleaned that one up and brought Roo inside for a while. Then this morning I’m out with her and she’s sniffing at…what’s that? ANOTHER squirrel. So either she got it in the 5 min she was out at dusk last night or something else is taking out squirrels. (Don’t worry: she didn’t eat them and vet confirmed she’s all good.) Rave: We’re knocking out a lot of house projects lately which brings me great joy.

Questions: Answering the question about hobbies: I got really into furniture flips (more below!) and jigsaw puzzles after I had a kid. I like short projects with a high visibility and “box check” type completion- something about the work I do as a boss means never being “done” and being a parent you’re never “done”- these types of projects I do have a clear end and finish line to celebrate and my brain likes that

I’m not big time like people who resell stuff but I really enjoy the challenge of taking items we’ve got and giving them a fresh look. Favorite projects include our formerly black-brown side tables, and our 40+ year old patio set that once belonged to my grandparents. Next project is turning a closet into my office nook!

How are you feeling?: this week is the best I’ve felt the whole pregnancy so far. Tired is gone and my headaches stopped this week (for now). It’s deadline work for week so hoping this keeps up until next Monday.

Rants/Raves: rant is still just work deadline and being tired. Rave is that we booked a 3 day trip to Central CA Coast after the deadline so something fun to look forward to!

Was raised by a mom who doesn’t cook, sew, knit, etc so just recently started learning to cook/bake. I’m much more of an unproductive hobbyist - puzzles, video games, board games, and reading. My husband and I do love a good Lego build or a metal earth ship build from time to time. I’m so excited to build legos with baby someday.

How are you feeling?: Nervous about the US - I had a scheduled check up on Friday and baby's heartbeat was skipping. Apparently this is common in 2nd semester but still has made me want everything tomorrow to be perfect.

Rants/Raves: Rant - it's Canadian Thanksgiving today and my husband and I both have colds so we didn't go to our Friendsgiving. Rave - I threw together a quick thanksgiving just for us and the apartment smells like turkey now. Super glad all the holidays with tasty food weren't during my first trimester lol. OH also I finally felt baby move for the first time yesterday!

@missmuisq I didn't start a new hobby but made sure I kept up with my hobbies. I haven't had time in the past couple of months and it was really hard on me. I had a discussion with H and we came up with a plan. I've been able to read, and I started working on my art again which has made a world of a difference in my mood. I also agree that reading isn't a bad habit.

@heytallmama I live your flips! I have the exact same patio set and yours looks amazing. Mines already painted (not stained) pretty dark so it would take so much work to make it looks nice. I have some shelves from one of our rental houses that I'm currently trying to make look nicer for our house.

How are you feeling?: Pretty good. Very anxious so I'm looking forward to my MW appointment so I can hear baby's HB.

Rants/Raves: Rant: we hosted our Thanksgiving dinner on Saturday. It was smaller than usual but it was amazing. Everyone brought food so it wasn't super stressful and the kids had a great time.

GTKY: Favorite Thing to make. I love making things. I paint, although I'm not great at it. And I make string art. I'm currently working on a piece for my niece. My favorite piece so far is my daughter's name sign.

@miss_lynn9 thank you! the patio set was built by a local Amish carpenter from where I grew up! It took so many rounds of sanding to get smooth again before I could use some wood filler and stain it 😂 Pretty sure 90% of the time spent on that project was sanding lol

Upcoming Appointments: my anatomy scan is October 24; my son has his 2 year checkup on Thursday morning, and tomorrow I get my flu shot

How are you feeling?: feeling good pregnancy-wise, but annoyed work-wise because of some student behaviors I deal with daily.

Rants/Raves: rant is the student behaviors; rave is that I think DH is finally getting the ball rolling (with a little pressure from me) on home updates. We’re replacing our fence this spring and he said he might email our insurance agent about getting a roofer to inspect our roof because literally almost every house on our block is getting a new roof. So hoping enough storm damage shows lol. We painted the house last year and then all we need to do is get a new furnace before we sell in a couple years!

@missmuisq - I think reading is a great stress relief and example for your kids. I do read on my phone, so I can see how that would look like doom-scrolling, but my 5yo likes to come swipe the pages for me and pick out vowels she knows.

@disneybaby23 I relate to you so much. I don’t think I have any productive hobbies (aside from cooking I suppose). My husband and I are both replaying the mass effect series since we just got the legendary edition. I have a Lego Harry Potter collection and we definitely love building together. It’s fun being an adult kid and playing legos with my kids is probably my favorite thing to do with them now that they’re older.

Rants/Raves: Rants- my boys have lost their everlasting minds these last few days. So much attitude, flat out defiance, fighting, and screaming. 😔
Raves- we had dinner over at our priest's house this Sunday and I was able to really talk to his wife and get some advice on what works for her when she is reaching her limit with the kids. I'm slowly hoping to incorporate some of these things and I'm really hoping and praying I see a difference in all our attitudes.

@TortugaAzul - I didn't like the pregnancy pillow I got for my first. It was C shaped, but I didn't like the part under my head, and then there was no support for my back, so I ended up with it and two other pillows. With my 2nd, I just used my regular pillow and two body pillows so I could always have something to curl up around plus back support. I just use the cheap ones from Walmart.

How are you feeling?: Better than first trimester. No more nausea!! 🤗 Still quite tired, but everyone says I look much better than I did a few weeks ago. 😂

Rants/Raves: I broke up with my midwives. Actually, they broke up with me. I was working with a team and I had only met one of them for my consultation + first visit. Two weeks ago I had a horrible second visit with the other gal. She had no clue what she was doing, was unable to answer any questions and couldn’t even draw blood properly and sanitarily — which my boyfriend called her out on (he has two parents who work in the medical field). My $2000 deposit was due that day, so I paid even though I had a bad feeling. The next morning she calls me and says she feels uncomfortable with us and no longer wants to work with us. Then refused to refund my money. I raised hell and after way too much stress got my money back, but I seriously felt like I was being scammed! It had taken all of my energy these last two weeks. I didn’t get my money back until this past Thursday. Now I’m desperately looking for a new midwife. Have two consults next week. One of my good friend is a doula and has been working here in NYC for 40 years and recommended some people, and gave me great advice on the whole experience. Very thankful to her. Rant over!

Rants/Raves: My husband is out of town for a few days and of course the first morning he’s gone, one of my labs threw up all of his breakfast…while I was eating mine. He made several piles, one of which was right next to my foot. 😅 So that was a nice way to start the morning. 🙃

Upcoming Appointments: Just had my 16 week checkup yesterday with good fundal height and fetal HR. AFP draw for neural tube defects and flu shot. Scheduled my anatomy scan for four weeks (eek!).

How are you feeling?: Reasonably well. Energy waxes and wanes but I attribute that to the two crazy kids I wrangle every day.

Rants/Raves: Feeling more baby movement and am slowly getting all the baby stuff we need!

I have tried my hand at knitting but am not that great. I probably need to learn from a person and not the internet. I started a cross stitch earlier this year I need to finish for DS’s room (it’s Mario characters) and need to get back on that. I also love to cook and am a huge fan of YouTuber Brian Lagerstrom and all his recipes.

How are you feeling?: Ok. Still throwing up before eating every morning, but not really nauseous. My son has gotten more aggressive about trying to get me to stop if I happen to do it in front of him. 😐

Rants/Raves: Rave: I had yesterday off and my son went to daycare so I scheduled a pedicure, haircut, and prenatal massage. So nice! Rant: I went hiking with my friend, her 18 month old and my son and the kids were both in backpacks. My son (almost 3) was so heavy and no my lower back is acting up again. After it was so nice to be pain free for a while!

I love how many people like knitting! I like knitting but haven't done it in a while. I have been thinking I need to do it again. My skill level is comfortable with hats and I have made one successful sock, but got confused when I tried to make another. Lol. I also like sewing and made all our curtains for our house.

@cheznet yay for a nice relaxing day. And I'm super impressed that you carried your 3 year old on a hike. I have a very good hiking pack for my 2 year old daughter and I had trouble not pregnant lol. But also I'm small and the pack is too big so that doesn't help.

@noxacanthus First of all, what a beautiful gift! And regarding reading, yes, totally. I think it's all about balance. I just think there's something very soothing, mesmerizing, inspiring, and kind of magical when people make something from nothing, whatever it is (fiber arts, painting, furniture flips, etc.), and I'd like to find something for myself besides cooking. My parents also have a small handmade knit goods company (baby blankets), so it kind of kills me that I still haven't sat down and learned how to knit by my mom's side. Also, I read on a Kindle or phone and I'd kind of rather cut down on screens and have my kids see me with physical books. But, of course, reading is awesome! Anyway, I know that I'm probably naive to think I'll even be having much free time to fill in the first place, heh, at least at the beginning.

@heytallmama Love your furniture! Though it took me quite a while to realize those side tables were on top of a table. Was wondering what kind of side tables are that enormous, lol.

@cheznet Your “one successful sock” comment made me snort out loud. I have made 1.75 successful scarves. 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t do anything besides knit stitch to save my life so they are boring scarves at that!

Does anyone have interest in a recipes or crafting thread or both? I am in need of easy recipes for when I have three kiddos and go back to work. I also plan on making a ton of freezer meals and dump meals for the crockpot before baby comes.

How are you feeling?: Exhausted but nausea and most food aversions are gone. I also figured out that my extreme heartburn was because I wasn’t eating enough! So I’m eating an extra meal/large snack a day and feeling much better.

Rants/Raves: Rant: Work is too busy! I’ve been working nights and weekends for the past two weeks and it’s going to be like this until December. It’s our busy time of year and my boss and I are covering for two of our teammates on family leave.

Rave: My mom is planning a big baby shower for me. I’m so excited! We’re doing it in December and expecting 40-50 people - family and friends. I’m an only child which sucked growing up but is fun right now because my mom is spoiling me. People have already starting buying from the registry and my friends are all so excited and they already call my son their nephew (since I’m an only they all are on board with being aunties!)

Questions: When do your nipples stop hurting?? My nips are constantly sore, and I’m just confused because the internet says this stops by the second trimester. But if it keeps going, how am I supposed to breastfeed? Or does it stop once you have the baby?

@Wishilivedinflorida A crafting thread would be fun! I actually got the pattern for the baby pants from a similar thread in DD's BMB and now it is my go-to present for baby showers (that and an electric nail file).

@excitedforpiscesbaby omg how fun that your mom is planning a big shower for you! I have heard that the only child perks are much more enticing as an adult than as a kid (says my only child husband). Also your artwork is so cute!!!!

@excitedforpiscesbaby that's very exciting about the baby shower! I unfortunately didn't get one for my first, I was going to do it after but she was born in 2020. Soooo we all know that didn't happen lol

@missmuisq the scan went great! I was glad I knew they probably wouldn't say much during it, because it was a full 50 awkward minutes of silence while I was trying not to over analyze the tech's facial expressions. But, baby is a healthy baby BOY! Which also shocked both of us because the last month or so we started feeling convinced baby was a girl! We are excited and so relieved that the scan went well. My only disappointment is that our actual photos aren't all that great. Tempted to go the boutique route to try and get some good ones.
