Re: The Great Big Queston Thread!

  • I only eat Peter Pan. Fun fact, it's almost impossible to find on the West Coast, so I actually order it from Amazon lol. So no recall for me.

  • Hi pals! In search of pregnancy safe sunscreens. My midwife this morning didn’t seem too concerned by any of them but you read all sorts of things about the chemicals & additives not being great for the babe. I also read that mineral sunscreens are best? Any suggestions would be welcome! Sincerely, a gal who burns after 5 min in the sun 😂☀️
  • @ciscothedog2018 yes to mineral ones! I used the Sun Bum Mineral Spray last pregnancy and liked it! Zinc-Based Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 | Sun Bum I use Beautycounter's sunscreen now :)

I didn’t know sunscreen was an issue 😬 I’ve just been using the spray bottle kind that I use on my 8 y/o. Do I need to switch?

@ciscothedog2018 I haven't heard any concerns about using standard sunscreen while pregnant, so if that's all you have you're better off using it rather than risking a burn! That said, my husband and I both have sensitive skin, and I turn into a lobster instantly if exposed to sunlight. Mineral sunscreens have been a great option for us. We like Sun Bum, Neutrogena Sheer Zinc, and Bare Republic. If you're like me and you like to have a small supply on hand when you're out and about, I usually keep a Bare Republic sunscreen stick in my purse in addition to the lotions that live at the house.
    First time mom-to-be, due 9/25/22

Some complicated chromosomal stuff going on - our fingers are crossed, but this may not go according to plan!

  • We have a lot of Coppertone at home. It's always worked so it's my go-to. I am very well-camouflaged in snow, so I definitely need it. My mom tans, my dad does not. I inherited a lot from my dad, haha, and I figure it'll be even worse with pregnancy, so I need to keep on the sunscreen.
I feel like there's always something to be worried about?
  • I agree with mineral sunscreens. Love the little sun bum stick for my toddlers’ face and body. For myself, I try to always wear a hat and sun shirts. I’m not against sunscreen, but prefer to wear clothing to not deal with feeling of wearing sunscreen
  • In reference to the labor discussions on the weekly check in, I want to hear all the stories! What are some good video resources? Did anybody just google for them? We don’t have cable, but I’m guessing there will be some sort of labor and delivery type stuff on Netflix or peacock.
  • @maple1422 you talking birth stories? The Birth Hour has a good podcast as well as Postive Birth Stories (I think that's what it'd called). I also read Birth In Focus and really liked it. Reals pictures from births the midwife who wrote the book attended as well as each story from the perspective of the midwife, the birthing mother and the Birth partner or someone else who was in attendance.
  • @maple1422 some Youtube channels do a great job documenting in real time their birth stories and some follow up later with back story where they disclose what they imaged it to be verses how it actually happened.
  • @maple1422 have you watched "the business of being born" it's definitely swayed, but I really enjoyed it. I think you can find it on Netflix and YouTube.

Also the birth hour podcast is awesome I love listening to the stories.

  • I third The Business of Being Born. And I second YouTube. The good thing about YT is you can search for specific birth experiences (i.e., epidural, home birth, water birth, etc.). Also, Ina May’s Guide devotes the first half to birth stories.
  • I posted it in the other thread too but I highly recommend Sarah Lavonne on YouTube. I’ve learned so much over the last few years and she presents all the info in really understandable terms and isn’t biased in one way or another. She’s a trained L&D nurse that has courses for better practices by L&D nurses but it also a trained doula and lactation specialist so it’s a nice balance of all views and options.
  • Question(s): I haven't had a fetal echo and have only had ultrasounds, no doppler, so I haven't heard the heartbeat but I have seen it. Is that weird or do those two things happen under special circumstances?

  • They can have the ultrasounds play the heartbeat for you, apparently they just didn't

  • @pangolindrome My doctor has the saying, "hear or see the heart at every appointment." If I were you, I would request a simple doppler at your next appointment, for peace of mind. You're far enough along where they should be able to easily find it.

  • @pangolindrome I haven't had a fetal echo done, and the OB used the doppler for the first time today at my 24 week check up (although I'm still 23 weeks). So I don't think it's weird at all!
  • @pangolindrome the practice here is Doppler at every appointment and they try to start that around 12 weeks though it’s tougher to find then but my OB found it eventually, and then only one ultrasound (20 week anatomy scan) unless you’re high risk and had multiple losses in the past. I’ve never heard of anyone getting an echo as a routine thing. It sounds like something you’d get referred to if they’re concerned about baby’s heart. So yeah it seems like like it’s different all over the place!
  • @pangolindrome you can ask them when they do the ultrasound if you can hear the heartbeat. My midwife uses the doppler every time but she said that the ultrasound and the doppler disturb baby so they try to be quick to create as little disturbance as possible. I asked at the ultrasound and she turned it on for like 3 seconds😅
  • Never had an echo done, but they listen for the hb at every appointment from 12 weeks on in all of my pregnancies. Also the dating US and anatomy scan they scanned the hb and let me listen to it. I find it very odd you haven't gotten to hear it yet.
  • Sounds like maybe they'll listen to it after this. My next appointment is virtual, but maybe after that. I'll ask. The US at Women's Healthcare Associates are, according to them, among the most detailed in the country - so maybe that's why they didn't also do the doppler. Idk.
  • I only had an echo done because I have preexisting health conditions and was taking a med that had a very small chance of cardiac effects in baby. I actually don’t know anyone else who has had one!
I think they should do a Doppler at every visit though, I think that’s fairly standard. I would ask for one if they don’t just do it at your routine in person visits.

Premature question (diapering is set for 6/13), but I'm trying to get our registry done this weekend! Wipes- tell me about them. Why are there so many choices?? I'm thinking a sensitive/scentless option is best, but is there really any difference between brands?
  • @dvmmomma I didn't find many differences between the major brands, but I'll say that the pricey ones (Honest and similar) weren't worth it. We personally like Pampers Pure in our house because they aren't soaking wet (personal preference) and don't really have a smell. Some standard brands that aren't sensitive have a soapy feel to them. That said, I liked using Water Wipes for the first few weeks because they just seemed to work a bit better and clean all the poop a bit better. I only have one box for the new baby, and that'll be plenty since we'll jump into our cloth dipes and wipes after that.

Honestly, you really only need wipes for poopy diapers, if they have pee running down their legs, or if you're trying to clean off ointment (which most of the time we just let fade on its own). We wasted so many wipes cleaning every pee diaper.

  • I really like 7th generation free and clear wipes
  • To piggyback off this question, is there anything specific for boys that's recommended in terms of diapering? Products and/or general advice? Or is changing a boy no different than changing a girl?
  • @bigworldlittleg I have a little girl, but one of my close friends had her first boy a week before me and we talked about this. The only difference is you need to point their penis down when you put on the diaper or it'll pee out the top. Don't buy into the Peepee Teepee craze (why would you want to make more laundry for yourself?); girls are similar and pee when exposed to cold air. The easiest way to combat this is to open the diaper, let the air hit their privates, then flip the dirty diaper back up and hold it in place. Then when they're done peeing, put a clean one on. Some people prefer a cold washcloth on the belly or even a cold baby wipe to get the same effect.

Either way, you'll probably want to invest in some Aquaphor to slather on the bum and genitals each night (helps prevent rash) and some strong diaper cream for any rash they may get (we like Butt Paste Maximum).

*Disclaimer: if you choose to circumcise, they'll teach you in the hospital what you need to know to keep the area clean. You can also ask them for advice on keeping the foreskin clean if you don't circumcise. For example, girls need to have their privates wiped in all crevices. That's something the hospital can cover with you for hands-on practice with your actual babe.

  • @dvmmama seconding that the more expensive brands are not worth it. We’re huge fans of the Huggies natural care box from Costco. Idk if they’re a choice for your registry but sooo much cheaper to just get the box of 18 from Costco than individuals later on.

@bigworldlittleg just point that peep down every time and you’re good 😊 my son would also pee as soon as he got into his baby bath so watch out lol I had to clean our kitchen backsplash right after for the first few months there.
  • I love the Kirkland brand wipes and diapers. I’ve always found great quality.

So, I forgot who asked this, and what group they requested. But I asked my doctor about hurricanes today. She basically said don’t borrow trouble and if we need to evacuate the office will send something out 😂
  • @dvmmama Kirkland wipes are my favorite. I used to work in a toddler room and parents brought wipes once a month so we got a huge variety. Some (don't remember brands) have soap in them and would leave soap suds on the kids bum. I like that the Kirkland ones are thin, unscented and have the right amount of moisture that lasts throughout the whole pack as long as the pack is closed when no in use.
@bigworldlittleg just that boys can pee straight up in the air like Old Faithful😂 I've heard some people say they just put a wipe over the penis as their taking the diaper off so at least it'll go in the diaper and not everywhere.
  • We used pampers sensitive with DS1 and will do the same again. He didn't have sensitive skin that I know of. I just never had issues with them so I stuck to them. We have friends whose little girl has sensitive skin and would break out in rashes without the right wipes. They use kirkland for her and are very happy with them.
  • Anyone have any experience with a belly button hernia and pregnancy? My doc said I should look for a hernia belt for pregnancy and I am not even sure where to start. Assuming, I'd want something that went over my belly button since that's the area of concern?
  • How do you FOCUS ON WORK when baby is having a really active time?

I don't know if she liked or hated the chicken meatballs and rice with BBQ sauce and leftover sugar cookies I had for lunch, but if I was doing kick counts, I would've gotten my 10 movements in about 15-20 minutes and now it's been 1.5 hours. LOL. It's cute and reassuring, just a teensy bit (hugely) distracting. Swimming lessons and soccer for this girl! Week 23 is starting STRONG!
  • @laj0217 I read your hurricane comment and just realized we have a small ‘tropical development’ heading my way so I’m apparently out of the loop. I can’t remember exactly where you’re located but here I feel like the earth basically has to be falling apart before I’d hear from work/doctor/school/etc. I’m used to that though…

I just hope this time my fence in the back doesn’t blow down again.
  • Can anyone recommend a store that has baby clothing similar to H&M (solid, muted colors for onesies)? I added a bunch of items to my registry and I swear they sell out before I finish uploading!
  • @costaricamom I love Old Navy! You could also check out Primary - Primary Clothing - Brilliant Basics for Baby & Kids
