Re: Product Spotlight - Maternity Clothes

  • @dsmith11 shein! I know it’s been talked about multiple times on here already but it’s so affordable and they have tons of styles. I found my gender reveal dress on there for $19!

pinkblush maternity also has really cute stuff but it’s a higher price point!

  • I’m just following up in case anyone is interested. I got my Seraphine order and am sad to say I am unimpressed 😫. The clothes are expensive and I wanted to LOVE them. I ordered a maxi dress, twin pack of maternity to nursing tank tops, and a pair  “athliesure” joggers. The dress and pants are too big (but maybe I just keep them and they’ll eventually fit once I get bigger). The pants are so thin, not at all what I was expecting. They’ll be nice sleep or lounge pants but not something I’d wear out. The tank tops are nice but they don’t have a shelf bra so I’m concerned about actually wearing them for nursing … I prefer the reusable cloth nursing pads over the disposable so I don’t see how they’d stay on my nips to do their job. The dress isn’t particularly well made. Everything is like just okay and I don’t think worth the price tag.  Now I’m left wondering if I return it and try again with new items - I just really hate to pay for shipping again .
  • @kboydbowman maybe it’s because I’m Swedish - that’s literally what we call them. “Regnbyxor” - rain pants, pants for when it rains.

@babywiik That’s actually a really good thought. If there’s a brand in Sweden, my parents could send me some. That’s where I’m from, but I live permanently in Oregon.
Also yeah - does noone else just call them rain pants? Waterproof pants is too long for me 😝
Hunting pants is probably a good idea. I’ll keep looking. I’ll post what I find.
  • @pangolindrome
the area where I live is considered "pre-desert."  We average less than 10 inches of rain per year, and nearly all of that occurs between January and April.  So no, "rain pants" are totally not a thing here.  Lol.
    Current pregnancy -
First BFP on 1/4/22.  Due date 9/13/22.

Four prior losses, no living children - 1 first trimester miscarriage, 1 blighted ovum, 1 chemical, and one extreme premature live birth daughter who died at 15 days old.

  • In Canada or at least in Ontario we call them slush pants lol

@babywiik Okay so the idea about hunting pants gave me this realization. I ordered a pair of bib rain pants, pretty much the kinds hunters and fishermen wear. It’ll be easy to adjust as my belly grows because all I need to do is lengthen the straps!!!
I got Helly Hansen’s Mandal style and I’m excited. I ordered up so I’ll have to update with how the sizing is when they get here on Tuesday.

@kboydbowman I lived in the high desert (eastern Oregon) for four-five years so I can definitely understand what that is like.
  • @pangolindrome I think rain pants are normal (for those that use them). I worked at a daycare when I lived in the PNW and all the kids at rainsuits and we went outside every day rain or shine. I invested in a pair then (bought in Norway) so I could be just as comfortable outside as the kids were. Super cool your bibs will work for you. Decent rain gear is so essential to being outdoors where it rains. Also, cool that you're Swedish! We kinda swapped places😜 I've been to Gällivare, Kiruna, Knivsta and Stockholm. If you ever happen to be in Norway, look me up😁
  • @pangolindrome I was going to suggest the bib pants. Thinking worst case you can snip the sides as you get bigger.

I have rain suits for my kids for every size, but use more for mud season and puddle jumping than playing in the rain. Maybe I need a rain suit so I will play in the rain too.

I didn’t even think of they I’ll be able to snip the sides!  Now I’m even more excited!
  • OK so what do you do when your bras just don’t fit/are super uncomfortable?
Go buy a new “real” bra at a different size? Jump in the “maternity/nursing” bra train right away? Just wear sports bras forever ?!?
  • I went the maternity bra route

  • I just ordered a pair of jeans from PinkBlush and I’m looking forward to them - thanks for the rec! I’ve been living in leggings from pact (their selection is very limited but I like the fit) and the PoshDiva and Yogalicious brands on Amazon. Around $20 and super comfortable in my regular size / maternity fit. I wear them for workouts and for work with a long sweater and boots. Great shorts too.

I just spent the whole weekend driving around two different (Canadian) cities looking for some dress pants for work. The only store that has a maternity section is H&M and even then, it was slim pick'ns. Nothing else. Absolutely nothing else. I am now resigned to ordering online. Thank goodness you ladies have some great suggestions!
  • @melyrae I bought the same style bra just one cup size up. If you find your band is too tight, you can buy an extender piece.
  • @melyrae okay so I just went through this and I have discovered a great option! I bought the Calvin Klein Invisibles Triangle Bralettes and I am obsessed!!!! They are that seamless, silky smooth material and the cups are removable if you need to remove them. I feel like they are between a bra and a nursing bra so they feel perfect for this stage. Adjustable straps, no underwire! Haven’t worn a “real” bra since I bought them!
  • @pangolindrome Was just going to tell you that you should order some "bibs" or "foul weather gear" for fishing. I  have those, as we fish offshore/deep sea, and wear them over our clothes for when the waves are big and sending spray/water into the boat. Helly Hansen is a really good brand! Some others you could try are Huk (thinner but work well) and West Marine.
  • Shein stuff does come really short! I found that before pregnancy, so can't imagine now. But otherwise things like long dresses, t shirts are a great deal! @jhysmath
  • I'm 5'2".  Short is a plus!

  • The Stitch Fix arrived this weekend and it was a HIT! Got a pretty maxi dress that I can dress up or down, a couple of tops AND a pair of jean shorts! I also hit up that Macy's sale and got another pair of jean shorts on sale and two ($8!) pairs of jersey material shorts to wear around the house in the summer. Need to find a maternity bathing suit and then I'm done. Pinky swear.

I’m so glad you said this!!! Thank you, I feel really comfortable with my choice now :)
I know Helly Hansen so that’s what I figured I would go with. After today’s rain, I’m excited for them to arrive tomorrow. I suffered through in my Duluth firehose pants but where they sit, even extended with a belt so I don’t have to button, causes me pain going up into the woods.
I look forward to my bibs!!!!!!!!!
  • @mnmomma84
I love luring people to the Stitch Fix dark side.  It's slightly pricy but so worth it.

  • @ciscothedog2018 thanks for the recommendation! Is it good support/not too “nippley”?? Lol that’s my biggest fear
  • For those who did stitch fix - is there a Maternity option? Or do you just make a note of it for the stylist ?
  • You can do it either way with stitch fix.

  • @melyrae lol mine too!!! I’m usually a B cup and I’m definitely a C now and I feel like the support is great. And the pads make it not too nippley at all, in fact that hasn’t been an issue for me at all so far!

This is good to hear. I am steadily working my way up to a C at this point. My B cups are getting a little tight - not spilling over or anything but definitely will need options relatively soon.
  • @mmoli79 @pangolindrome @ciscothedog2018

I hit the jackpot today! I went to La Vie En Rose (it’s a Canadian company so idk if you can get it??) and their “bralettes” are actually great. Normally I hate bralettes because they don’t seem to keep ANYTHING wrangled in (and they can be nippley)…
But these are great- These have no underwire, but still lined and very supportive and everything feels covered lol.  I got the “classic lace bralette” and “push-up lounge bralette”.

So Canadians (and those willing to order online), there ya go!!! An “in between stage” bra win.
  • @melyrae Thanks for the tip! I need a win here in Canada!
  • Hello fellow Canadians! With my first, I got a ton of clothes from Motherhood Maternity and Thyme (both closed) and some from across the border in Target so I’m pretty set, though I do need some more summer options like tshirts, shorts, maybe a few dresses. I got nursing bras from La Vie En Rose with my first and plan to wear them this time too. I also just ordered a nursing bra to try out from Sportchek?! Who would’ve thought lol it’s only $35, so if it’s good then I’ll buy like 3 more colours. I’m also planning to cruise The Bay online (they have a maternity section) and I recall Walmart having some plain tshirts before. It’s true that H&M has some maternity though I agree it’s slim pickings. I do actually like the Old Navy stuff I saw online.. someone already mentioned it. We also have some small local shops that I’m thinking of stopping by at that have a few maternity options. Maybe your cities do too?
  • And just to add to my previous post… companies may ship to Canada, but also check what their return policy is for international orders. Because if you buy something for let’s say $50 and it really doesn’t fit well and you need to return it, the return cost can easily be $30+ for a small light package back to the US 🥴
  • @newbabymama27 Thanks for the tips! I needed something desperately for this week for work and finding something in stores would have been helpful. Unfortunately, I am in Atlantic Canada and there seems to be no local shops selling maternity clothes. I checked out the Bay also and they didn't have anything in stores either but do have a few items online. I ended up not zipping up my pants or tucking in my shirt and kept my blazer on and buttoned so you wouldn't see the mess underneath. I'm a small person and I am pretty sure my belly was bulging out a bit. I felt ridiculous but it will do for this week!

I ended up paying for express shipping for some clothes from the Gap. They should arrive this week so I will have some proper pants for next week. I also bought some other stuff online and crossing my fingers that they will fit because I don't intend to pay for shipping for any returns. You're absolutely right, they are expensive (both customs and return shipping).

  • @puppiesandbabies ooh I hope the Gap works out for you! They also have such cute stuff. I forgot to mention them since i usually bunch them up with Old Navy. I honestly never buy anything from The Bay in store and only shop online, then if I don’t like it I just drive it over to return in person. BUT I don’t want to assume you have The Bay locally either.
  • @newbabymama27 Thank you! I hope they work out also.

I plan to check out your suggestions for La Vie En Rose and Sportchek. I was able to order some casual stuff online at Adidas. They don't have too many options, but the few that they do have look comfortable!
  • I got my first few bathing suits (all 2 pieces) from Shein this week. So far they all work great!  I mean, they're obviously not super high quality, so they won't be likely to last more than 2 years, but since I only need them to work for this pregnancy pretty much, I'd say they're a win.

  • I ordered Levi's maternity jeans off amazon.ca There's a good amount of choices there and can't beat 2 day shipping. I ordered jeans from the gap too and they were nice but too big so back they went.
  • I’m shopping at Ingrid and Isabel, Storq (their overalls are A+), Hatch, the Gap, and Pea in the Pod.

I’m trying to not go too crazy, but I am also buying things I can wear when nursing, and honestly some of it I’ll probably wear when I’m not pregnant. Sustainable brands are important to me as well (I used to work in fashion and the waste is mind-boggling) I feel like hey—-if it’s cute, quality, and fits…no reason not to wear it.

The maternity bras from negative underwear are super worth it. They work for nursing as well.

I will say this much: Hatch is insanely priced, but one or two things is ok as a splurge
  • @babywiik Ooo those are cute!! Maternity jeans are always so weird in the crotch area so I hate ordering them online! I did have a pair of J Brand Maternity jeans last time and I loved them but I got them for cheap off of poshmark because I was not splurging. I need to check out H&M.
  • @knottieabf8889cc99d07fa I also have a hard time talking myself into cheap clothes because the waste is so awful! Like, I get that maternity isn't gonna be something you wear forever, but man, knowing full well you plan to throw it away after use instead of handing it down makes me cringe. I still buy cheap a lot of the time, but I try so hard to get quality that will at least work for someone else when I'm done. I'm also a sewist, so I can reuse some of the fabric.

  • I just got a huge bag of maternity clothes from our school nurse. She had a daughter in October and this is the last one they plan to have. I was so excited last night going through the bag. A couple of tops, a nice dress, and lots of shorts and jeans!!
