@deaf_girl I'm so sorry about YH's diagnosis. DH's cousin had a procedure done to extract sperm that they were then able to use for IVF. I could be wrong but I think @zwink1 may have used donor sperm for IVF? Sorry if I'm remembering incorrectly.

@deaf_girl i imagine you may want to try to pursue other avenues first and hopefully there will prove some as-yet unseen path with yh's sperm but if you ever want to talk donor sperm i've bought lots and lots of it and have opinions. i've also gone the "generous friend" route and can chat about that as well.

@deaf_girl I’m sorry for YH’s diagnosis. My friends husband
was diagnosed with azoospermia (slightly different than your diagnosis). They
were able to try a few things (a varicocelectomy and then a few months of
clomid) before turning to donor sperm (I’m surprised they didn’t suggest
ANYTHING for you guys to try. There has to be something!). My friend could have
done the procedure to extract the sperm (TESA), but it wasn’t something they
could afford either and wasn’t guaranteed they’d even find anything. After a few
required consoling sessions, they decided to go ahead with donor sperm and IUI.

@deaf_girl I am so sorry. But glad you got the information from the right physician. There's nothing more I can say. I would recommend that you sit with this information, and I would also suggest seeking out the help of a fertility therapist. Here for you if you have any questions. *hugs*
As for crappy insurance, I hear you. I started my infertility journey having no fertility insurance so my first year of treatment was all out of pocket. Luckily my work then introduced fertility insurance just as we had decided on IVF.
Lurking @deaf_girl I’m sorry and that’s certainly upsetting. Donor sperm is absolutely an option, if you’re interested in that route. I actually have an acquaintance friend who they had to use a donor egg to have their daughter. I know there’s a lot to process when you get news like that, and have to work through what those options mean to you.

AFM, had my baseline appt this morning. My RE doesn't seem to think I have any reason to believe my losses have to do with my embryos, so he wants us to go ahead and do one more FET with the same protocol just higher doses of prednisone and fragmin, then if this doesn't work we'll go back to square one and re-do all my testing (which wasn't done that long ago to begin with) and see what else we might be working with. A laparascopy is out of the question right now with the state of our healthcare system so that's not on the table just yet. FET scheduled for Wed Feb 23rd.

Hrm... tell me more about this warm water cervix bath @optimistgardener. I've only ever heard about the need to have a full bladder pre-transfer; I've not heard of the cervix bath before!
@acleverusername the RE and the nurse get me all situated in the stirrups and then the RE says "i'm going to clean off the surface of your cervix with some warm water. it will feel... unusual." and then i laughed because of the way he said unusual, so he elaborated "some clients tell me it feels like reverse peeing." and then he turns on the water, which seems like a gentle but also very generous amount of water being sprayed right at my cervix. it feels so freaking weird that i involuntarily shout and then burst into laughter. reverse peeing is not a bad way to describe it. it seems like this process requires a LOT of water, but obviously i can't tell what he's doing i just feel the results. then he mops up the area with some cotton gauze, and then (if i remember right) applies a little bit of the growth medium that the embryo has been hanging out in before he puts the catheter in place to deliver the embryo. of course all the while i desperately need to pee (they showed me the image on the ultrasound and my bladder is like this huge looming black cloud above everything, dwarfing my uterus).

@optimistgardener. So glad the transfer went well! I have also never heard of this "washing" thing and did not do it-- I can only think it must have made you really have to pee, since you typically have to have a full bladder for these things. Now comes the waiting game-- I know given how many IUIs you have been through you are certainly well-versed, but I'm sure this one seems a bit more high stakes. I think I speak for all of us (including us lurkers) that we have all digits crossed for the next 8-10 days...
thanks @bumblebee0210! i did a bit of hunting around for info about the cervical wash thing. Apparently, it is a way to get rid of cervical mucus, which can contaminate the transfer/process. I guess other clinics must have less... vigorous... methods. I am indeed already struggling w/ the wait. With IUIs, I got pretty good at the wait because I was practiced in disappointment. This feels new/more reason for hope? And therefore I am fidgety. I am trying to decide if I want to test early or not (beta #1 is scheduled for next sunday). My birthday is the day before my beta, which feels like a really high risk/high reward testing opportunity.

@kiki047 That sounds like a smart plan to try with this upcoming transfer. Sometimes it really is just the dosing that needs to be tweaked for things to work out well. 🤞🏽Whenever or if you ever decide to pursue the laparoscopy in the future, be sure to ask your doc how long you’ll have to spend recovering before you can do anymore procedures. I’ve heard it was two weeks for some lucky people, many seem to say 2-3 months, but my friend yesterday just told me she had it done with the esteemed RI Dr. Vidali in NYC and she had to take 4 months off to recover. So just something to keep in mind if it ever gets to that point.
@optimistgardener So glad to hear everything went smoothly! And so nice that your mom was allowed to be in the room with you (even if a bit awkward😁). MH hasn’t been allowed in the room with me for anything since 2020, so that’s sweet to hear that your clinic was more comfortable with it. BTW, my clinic in MX also does the cervical washing. It is indeed…unusual. At my clinic it’s done with very cold water!😬
AFM, juggling the massive work project and trying to track ovulation was not fun this week. It required taking breaks from the work tornado spread across my living and dining areas to drive into town and get blood drawn, and then hope that the results would be in my portal before midnight to help me gauge what my body was doing & how to plan the travel for the transfer. This time I did get obvious peak OPKs and EWCM— unlike the previous couple of months. So that was very reassuring. At the same time, the huge work project required some all-nighters before it got turned in on time. Then I slept for 13 hours straight. Now that the project is behind me I’m really focusing on being calm, mellow, zen, positive to and through transfer.
Yesterday I did a 4-hour infusion, today I’m headed to my local RE for the Neupogen wash, and tomorrow I head to MX for a Tuesday transfer. I really think the timing would be better if I could transfer on Monday, but it’s a federal holiday there and my clinic will be closed. So Tuesday is the best I can hope for. 🤷♀️
@keikilove i can't believe they use cold water. you brave, brave woman. Good luck with the neupogen wash! fx for a smooth transfer on Tuesday and that they catch your receptive window!

@deaf_girl, I'm so sorry for your bad news. That can be really tough to process. We have an MFI diagnosis of OAT - basically H has very few sperm and those that are there aren't swimming and/or shaped correctly. When we initially found out, our RE gave us a roughly 1% chance of conceiving naturally. We spent around a year working with an RU before going back to the RE to do IVF. We never were able to pinpoint the root cause of H's situation, but were able to make enough of an improvement through lifestyle and supplement changes that we ended up not having to use donor sperm for IVF (we did still use ICSI). If you're looking into supplements, H was taking CoQ10 and fish oil for sure, and I believe Vit E as well. I don't remember if we had him on anything else.
I'm not well versed on the specific diagnosis your RU gave you re FSH production, so I'm not sure if there are things you can do to improve that directly or not. It might be worth looking into whether supplements and lifestyle changes might help despite the FSH production. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to take someone from 0 to 30 million, but even a little bit of an improvement can make a huge difference.
There were a few people dealing with MFI, and Azoo specifically, when I was on here while going through IVF. As others have mentioned, in some situations they can do a TESE/TESA procedure and extract sperm directly from the testes, but I don't know enough about those procedures personally to know whether they're helpful for non-obstructive azoo causes. Something else to look into though.
Take all the time you need to absorb and process. MFI often comes with the added challenge of helping your H process his feelings (which often include guilt). We have had our fair share of that even though I come with my own special selection of IF issues myself. But before you lose all hope, talk to your RE about the RUs diagnosis. As others have mentioned, RUs specialize in male fertility, which makes them great for diagnosing and trouble-shooting male fertility issues. But they don't necessarily know how their diagnoses translate for IVF options. Depending on your specific numbers, your RE may feel you have more options than your RU thinks you do.
can i just pop in here for a moment to complain about my pio shot? mostly it's gone just fine but tonight's was ugh. first two attempts were super painful and i knew i'd hit a vein before i got the needle in very far, so pulled out and bled gratuitously from those spots. then tried for a different location and it was still super painful, but got the needle all the way in and no blood when i pulled the stopper back so injected. but then when i pulled the needle out this spot also bled gratuitously and i have a huge knot under the skin. ugh ugh ugh. now just sitting here massaging my ass feeling really sorry for myself.

They wanted me to do several medicated cycles because I’ve gotten pregnant twice with medicated cycles -they just ended in MC. But my previous medicated cycles with my OB weren’t monitored and I’ve started metformin since so I think the thought process was to see if we could adjust a couple things and see if that would work. I was also surprised we didn’t start with getting a SA for DH. It’s happening during my TWW though since we’ve already started medication for this cycle. Glad timing seems like it’s going to work out well for you this cycle and your build-your-lining meds worked. Keeping everything crossed for you this week!

@deaf_girl I’m sorry for YH’s diagnosis. My friends husband was diagnosed with azoospermia (slightly different than your diagnosis). They were able to try a few things (a varicocelectomy and then a few months of clomid) before turning to donor sperm (I’m surprised they didn’t suggest ANYTHING for you guys to try. There has to be something!). My friend could have done the procedure to extract the sperm (TESA), but it wasn’t something they could afford either and wasn’t guaranteed they’d even find anything. After a few required consoling sessions, they decided to go ahead with donor sperm and IUI. Big big hugs!

@deaf_girl I’m sorry and that’s certainly upsetting. Donor sperm is absolutely an option, if you’re interested in that route. I actually have an acquaintance friend who they had to use a donor egg to have their daughter. I know there’s a lot to process when you get news like that, and have to work through what those options mean to you.
@deaf_girl I am so very sorry to hear about YH's diagnosis. That is truly devastating. I hope you and YH are able to take some time this weekend to process this news in whatever way you need to.
AFM, had my baseline appt this morning. My RE doesn't seem to think I have any reason to believe my losses have to do with my embryos, so he wants us to go ahead and do one more FET with the same protocol just higher doses of prednisone and fragmin, then if this doesn't work we'll go back to square one and re-do all my testing (which wasn't done that long ago to begin with) and see what else we might be working with. A laparascopy is out of the question right now with the state of our healthcare system so that's not on the table just yet. FET scheduled for Wed Feb 23rd.

May '22 egg retrieval, lupron flare protocol. HGH priming for 1 month before stims; md lupron 20/20u daily; menopur 225, follistim 225, 10k trigger after 8 days of stims; AFC 10; 13 retrieved; 10 mature; 8 fertilized. All frozen at 2PN for later thaw, grow, and biopsy.

@optimistgardener. So glad the transfer went well! I have also never heard of this "washing" thing and did not do it-- I can only think it must have made you really have to pee, since you typically have to have a full bladder for these things. Now comes the waiting game-- I know given how many IUIs you have been through you are certainly well-versed, but I'm sure this one seems a bit more high stakes. I think I speak for all of us (including us lurkers) that we have all digits crossed for the next 8-10 days...

I am indeed already struggling w/ the wait. With IUIs, I got pretty good at the wait because I was practiced in disappointment. This feels new/more reason for hope? And therefore I am fidgety. I am trying to decide if I want to test early or not (beta #1 is scheduled for next sunday). My birthday is the day before my beta, which feels like a really high risk/high reward testing opportunity.

AFM, juggling the massive work project and trying to track ovulation was not fun this week. It required taking breaks from the work tornado spread across my living and dining areas to drive into town and get blood drawn, and then hope that the results would be in my portal before midnight to help me gauge what my body was doing & how to plan the travel for the transfer. This time I did get obvious peak OPKs and EWCM— unlike the previous couple of months. So that was very reassuring. At the same time, the huge work project required some all-nighters before it got turned in on time. Then I slept for 13 hours straight. Now that the project is behind me I’m really focusing on being calm, mellow, zen, positive to and through transfer.

@deaf_girl, I'm so sorry for your bad news. That can be really tough to process. We have an MFI diagnosis of OAT - basically H has very few sperm and those that are there aren't swimming and/or shaped correctly. When we initially found out, our RE gave us a roughly 1% chance of conceiving naturally. We spent around a year working with an RU before going back to the RE to do IVF. We never were able to pinpoint the root cause of H's situation, but were able to make enough of an improvement through lifestyle and supplement changes that we ended up not having to use donor sperm for IVF (we did still use ICSI). If you're looking into supplements, H was taking CoQ10 and fish oil for sure, and I believe Vit E as well. I don't remember if we had him on anything else.
I'm not well versed on the specific diagnosis your RU gave you re FSH production, so I'm not sure if there are things you can do to improve that directly or not. It might be worth looking into whether supplements and lifestyle changes might help despite the FSH production. Don't get me wrong, it's not going to take someone from 0 to 30 million, but even a little bit of an improvement can make a huge difference.
There were a few people dealing with MFI, and Azoo specifically, when I was on here while going through IVF. As others have mentioned, in some situations they can do a TESE/TESA procedure and extract sperm directly from the testes, but I don't know enough about those procedures personally to know whether they're helpful for non-obstructive azoo causes. Something else to look into though.
Take all the time you need to absorb and process. MFI often comes with the added challenge of helping your H process his feelings (which often include guilt). We have had our fair share of that even though I come with my own special selection of IF issues myself. But before you lose all hope, talk to your RE about the RUs diagnosis. As others have mentioned, RUs specialize in male fertility, which makes them great for diagnosing and trouble-shooting male fertility issues. But they don't necessarily know how their diagnoses translate for IVF options. Depending on your specific numbers, your RE may feel you have more options than your RU thinks you do.

They wanted me to do several medicated cycles because I’ve gotten pregnant twice with medicated cycles -they just ended in MC. But my previous medicated cycles with my OB weren’t monitored and I’ve started metformin since so I think the thought process was to see if we could adjust a couple things and see if that would work. I was also surprised we didn’t start with getting a SA for DH. It’s happening during my TWW though since we’ve already started medication for this cycle. Glad timing seems like it’s going to work out well for you this cycle and your build-your-lining meds worked. Keeping everything crossed for you this week!
