The Great Big Question Thread

Re: The Great Big Question Thread

  • Has anyone had a cold while pregnant and help me remember what is safe to do/take to treat it? I tried scrolling through a few of our threads as I am sure this has been asked already but couldn't find anything. My son brought home a bug from daycare and I now have a sore throat & congestion. Tested negative for covid on rapid tests so I think it is a regular cold/viral infection. So far I have some mint tea and a neti pot but I haven't had to take any medications yet in pregnancy so I am totally lost!! Any advice is appreciated!

  • Definitely double check with your doctor, but on the approved meds list my OB gave me, Tylenol cold was listed.
  • @courtneyqdk sounds like what I’m just getting over. Check with your doctor, but mine had the OTC Sudafed and Tylenol Cold as things I could take. Hope you feel better!
  • Thanks all for the reassurance. I ended up telling her today because she called asking if I would have availability in early June to go to the largest meeting our company hosts out in Vegas. It’s very unlikely I’ll be able to go. I travelled at 30 weeks across the country for work with my oldest and I’ll be 32 weeks when this would happen. I think COVID concerns are ultimately going to be what sidelines me. I’m so bummed. This happens every two years and this was going to be big because it’s our 100 year anniversary. I’ve always wanted to go to this and to get the opportunity for this particular year’s event is awesome, I just don’t see my doctor clearing me to go. ☹️ I’ve got a note out, so we’ll see.
  • Not really a question here, but just wanted to say I’m so over the nausea and vomiting. I’ll be 13 weeks in a few days and I know there’s potential for it to linger for many more weeks. Just trying to hold out hope it settles down soon. Got prescribed zofran and hopefully it might bring some relief. Hoping you all stay healthy and safe
  • For these monthly appointments we have with the OB, do they at least check the HB with a doppler while you're there?

  • @inthewoods23 I got to hear the heartbeat for the first time last week! It was so special! I'm glad they will do it every time.
  • @sunshineandlemons I told my boss last week at 13 weeks. I haven't announced to the rest of my coworkers yet -most i only see via video. i have 1 other person i see in the office occasionally and i plan on telling her the next time i get to see her and actually talk, because it's starting to get pretty obvious
  • Has anyone had experience having to wear compression socks during pregnancy? I have a super specific question and next doctor's appointment is awhile away so I'm curious if anyone knows the answer!

Last pregnancy, I had to wear compression socks for the second half of my pregnancy due to spider/varicose veins and swelling specifically in one of my ankles. I wore them almost every day for comfort and they helped a lot. This past week, I felt some discomfort in my ankle so brought them out and they definitely helped!

My question is, are the socks preventative at all for swelling? As in, should I be wearing them every day now that I have noticed some discomfort? Or are they simply treating the symptom and I should only wear them on days where I feel like I need them? If they are preventative I will definitely wear them every day but they are a PAIN to take on and off, special washing instructions, etc. and if they are just treating the symptom I would prefer to only wear them when I have any swelling or discomfort in my ankle for now.

I hope that makes sense! Was hard to try and find a way to Google that specific question. I am nervous feeling the need for them this early on because I am certain it will get worse the bigger I get 😬

  • @courtneyqdk I see no reason why you can't wear them everyday. I did when I worked a job on my feet for 10 hours. But I'm sure you could send your doctor a message prior to your appointment.
  • @courtneyqdk I wear compression and have with all my pregnancies. I think they definitely help. As a runner and someone who is on their feet a lot during the day it’s helped with swelling and varicose vein pain. I haven’t worn them yet, but now I’m thinking I should start since my legs do seem more sore than usual.
  • @lilirunning34 I used to be a runner - I actually wonder if that plays a part in me needing to wear them in pregnancy! (Did a couple of full marathons and many halfs & 10Ks - my last 10K was when I was pregnant the first time) I don't run anymore, other than the odd jog (less than 5K) but I think the distance training I did over the years definitely plays a part in it for sure, hard on the body for sure! I'm hoping it stays under control if I switch to compression socks now. Being super pregnant in July heat sounds difficult enough without extra swelling!!
  • When considering how far along you are, do you go by LMP or due date?
After my first OB appointment in Dec, I received a due date of July 21, so I adjusted my apps for that due date, which puts me at 13w 2d. Based only on my LMP, I'd be 13w 6d and celebrating end of the 1st trimester tomorrow. Just curious how everyone else calculates.

If the OB gives me an adjusted due date, I go by that. Last pregnancy, it got adjusted by a few days. This pregnancy, it stayed exactly the same. @velvetblue88
  • Thanks @stardustskies. I know implantation timing is different for everyone, so I figured the due date makes more sense for calculating growth & milestones. I've seen women on some boards using timing from their LMP even when they have different measurements. 🤷‍♀️
  • @velvetblue88 I go by LMP since that is what my OB uses. If they adjust at the beginning I would champagne to their EDD. My measurements are a few days off but they never adjusted my EDD. Later in pregnancy there are more variable rates of growth so you could measure a week or two “ahead” but not have an adjusted due date
  • @velvetblue88 I go by the adjusted date. I was 2 weeks behind going based on LMP. But for the 2nd ultrasound I was only about 8 days behind, but they kept the same date from my 1st US. It’s all really just a guessing game. My 3rd was 10 days “late” so maybe this one will be on the earlier side.
  • @velvetblue88 I've always just done by LMP. Although at my 12 week ultrasound I was measuring a whole 4 days ahead and I ovulate later than your "average" CD14 so I'm really more like a full week ahead. Even so, my OB did not change my due date. It sounds like they'll adjust it if you're measuring more than a week ahead or behind.

@thegeekymom I don't recall how the situation happened, but my friend dealt with her doctor believing her due date was a week later than it should have been. Fortunately, I don't think she had any difficulties with the delivery but I think her son did come out on the larger side (maybe 9lb or close to it?). She was terribly uncomfortable for the last week or two (this was also a July baby too so the heat made it worse). She's for sure delivering early with her next that's due in April, now March. I've thought about changing my app to be 4 days ahead since all the "baby is the size/as tall as..." facts are too small for what I'm measuring lol.

  • Is there anything safe to take during pregnancy when you have an upset stomach? Not sure if I ate something bad or if my body is rebelling at me eating gluten again over the last couple days.

Per my OB's safe medications list, Pepto-Bismol is a no so not sure what else I could take.

  • @inthewoods23 Imodium is safe if that’s the way things are going. Otherwise if you’re more gassy you could take Gas X Chewable Tablets (or Maalox Anti-Gas, Mylanta Maximum Strength Suspension/softgel). There’s always the typical nausea medications for morning sickness that could help too (Dramamine, Vit B-6… etc). Hope that helps.

  • I have covid. (Lame.) My OB wants me to get monoclonal antibodies. Has anyone had that treatment? Thoughts?
  • @velvetblue88 I had monoclonal antibodies with covid when I was 10 weeks. It took me 48 hours after the treatment and felt better!! Baby didn’t even know anything was wrong lol :)

question for all, FTM here, is it normal for fetal heart rate to fluctuate? I test with an at at home Doppler and usually around 144. Today was my 16+5 appt And my doc checked it and it was 130. He wasn’t concerned and said anywhere from 110-160 is normal.  But I guess I just worry bc it dropped??? Normal?? Please share experiences :)
  • @blf2072 I would guess that it's fine. I mean, our heart rates fluctuate too depending on our level of activity (my Fitbit has said anywhere from mid-80s to around 100 when I'm just sitting around) so maybe baby was just being more chill during the appointment?

Here's the fetal heart rates we've had recorded when I was doing weekly ultrasounds last month to give you an idea of the variation I had in the earlier weeks. I don't have an at home doppler to know what the heartbeat looks like now at 15w. I see my OB at 16w next week.
    6w5d - 120bpm
    8w - 167bpm
    9w - 178bpm
    10w - 180bpm
    11w - 171bpm
    12w - 165bpm

  • @blf2072 as far as I know fluctuation is totally normal. and definitely tied to how active they are. If you’re OB isn’t worried, you can relax too 🙂

  • @blf2072 when I was pregnant with my son, his HB was always between 130-150.

  • Thank you ladies, that helps relax me. ☺️
  • Has anyone done a sprinkle for subsequent children? My mom was asking about it because ours is 5 (tossed a lot of baby stuff), we're having 2 this time, and they're girls (we have a boy). I feel a little weird about it but would, honestly, love you get immediate family and a couple friends together. Maybe do a diaper raffle and ask for bottles and clothes?
  • I put a text into my doctor too BUT... anyone know if I need to be checked out if I fell?

My couch cushion apparently wasnt on all the way, and I tried to lean off and grab something and I fell directly to the floor. Bounced a little on landing. I landed on my wrist first and then my leg/hip. Didn't hit my stomach, and really didn't have very far to fall but I've never fallen while pregnant and I'm freaking out. My husband isn't even home

  • @tuxielove93 you've probably figured something out with this by now, but I would definitely say let your Dr know, but if you didn't hit your abdomen and didn't fall far/hard, I don't think they'll be too worried.  My OB did bring up falling and car accidents as causes for concern at my last appointment, but the general gist was if you're in an accident, obviously go in.  If you fall, definitely call and let them know, but more of a maybe on the going in.

FWIW, I fell when I was over 40 weeks pregnant with DS.  We had a horrible deck at the time and I walked out on it barefoot, slipped, and fell flat on my a**.  I didn't hit my abdomen at all, but was a little concerned that the jostle was enough to stir something up.  My OB at the time said keep a closer eye on kick counts, but otherwise they weren't too concerned and I had no issues.
  • @zwink1 I did get my midwife to call me back. She wasn’t concerned, but she did say I could stop in tomorrow for a heart beat check. I can feel him flipping around and I feel fine so I’m probably fine. But my husband was worried so he took work off tomorrow and he’s gonna drive me over so we can do the Doppler.

  • @jellie603 - We had a sprinkle for my friend who had twin boys (after having a girl) and I felt like that was 110% acceptable! Twins need double the stuff, and even more when you are having the opposite sex of what you have - friends and family will want to help you out!
  • @jellie603 if it seems like family is interested, especially given the circumstances, i totally would do it

We aren't planning on doing anything as we are having another boy, saved a bunch and are getting hand me downs from my SIL, i did create 2 private registries, mainly for completion coupons so we can get furniture and high chair and wagon and odds and ends stuff, but can also send via link if we happen to have any friends or family that want to give a gift. I have always given each kiddo some gift for close friends and family members, no matter what # kiddo they were
  • @jellie603 I definitely don’t see anything wrong with you having a sprinkle, especially considering the circumstances.

@tuxielove93 I’m glad your midwife got back to you and eased your mind some. The other day DS sat down HARD on my lap/belly and it hurt. I was definitely freaked out. But a little bit of googling told me that there is a lot of protection in there and that a small fall or roughhousing from a toddler isn’t likely going to harm the baby. It’s more car accidents and big falls later on that you have to be worried about. But of course, contacting your midwife/OB for any type of fall is a good idea.

  • @LJMoon6 they were really great about it. They let me stop in and they did a quick vital check and got the babies heart beat and felt around to make sure everything was ok. It was more for my mom and husband at that point 🤣 but I was really thankful for having such a good doctor who was willing to do that just to make me feel better

  • I just tested positive with an at home test for Covid. I’m going to call my OB in the morning but at this point I’ve taken Tylenol around the clock for what I thought was a bad 2nd tri  headache- not more than the dosage. However, I’ve got a fever now too so I presume I should probably continue to take it (within the right timeframes) to help keep the fever down? Is there anything else to take to reduce fever? I have also been putting a cold wet washcloth on my head too.
  • They say you can alternate Tylenol and Motrin for kids, but I have no idea about pregnant women. But yes, keeping the fever down is really important. You should also keep the thermostat at a good level, wear a normal amount of clothes, and try to keep your temperature as regulated as possible. And fluids fluids fluids!! I hope you get better soon and your OB calls back
