I am curious to know what everyone's thoughts are on the right time to announce pregnancy at work is. I want to wait atleast till the end of the first trimester.  But I've been tempted to announce it at times, specially on long days of meetings when I have been exhausted and overloaded with work and wish I could earn some empathy, if they knew. Thoughts?

  • @knottie I won’t announce until I’m showing and can’t hide it anymore. It’s my first so idk when that’ll be! I work in an elementary school and have been lying a little to get some extra precautions taken with some of my more “difficult” students haha
  • @lilly_blue I’ve told my direct supervisor. He knew that I was doing IVF (because of all the appointments) and so I let him know just today that it worked. I’m not going to be telling other people until 2nd trimester and to be honest, will be relying on the gossip train in my office to get the word around.

@lilly_blue I told my boss this week because we are interviewing for a second dietitian. One of the cooks guessed today too. It’s hard to hide morning sickness in a kitchen 😬

ETA last 2 pregnancies I was like 16-18 weeks before I told anyone at work besides a really close coworker
  • @lilly_blue how weird! When I saw your comment before it was just with a generic knottie username! Whoops! Sorry to not use your actual username haha!!
  • Any other migraine sufferers here? It had been a while since I had one and I was starting to hope I was one of the lucky ones whose migraines stop during pregnancy, but woke up with one this morning. Obviously I can’t take my normal Advil/Midol combo to kick it, or drink the extra caffeine that normally helps. I’ve got ice going, just about to take a shower, have some peppermint tea... any other pregnancy-friendly migraine suggestions?
  • @runningoncookies @sawasap @whatabout2ndbreakfast Thanks for sharing all these different ideas from your experience!

Normally, I would wait until I am showing. But since I've been working remotely because of covid, there's an increase in the number of meetings and workload. So, I will likely tell only my direct supervisor soon.

@runningoncookies I had updated my generic knottie name but I think it took a little while to get updated here, so I'm sure it was "knottie" when you responded
  • @lilly_blue whenever you’re ready! If the benefits (empathy, flexibility) outweigh the cons, go ahead and share.
I kept my first a total 100% secret for a long time. A few people guessed at 16w and I confessed but hid it from everyone else till 20w.
second pregnancy I ended up sharing with two close coworkers and my boss earlier because I was so sick and it was a huge relief to stop faking so hard.
Whatever works best for your situation is the right answer.

@lilly_blue I work remotely as well. I have a bit of a different case, all my direct coworkers know already because we did IVF so they were dying to know if it worked.  I told my supervisors I was going through the process because I needed time off, but I won't tell them that it worked until after my 12 week appt.

  • @lilly_blue my first pregnancy I told both family and work right away. For this one, I told family right away, but am waiting until after my first appointment to tell work. I honestly don’t have the option of waiting until I’m showing - I never lost the “pregnant” shape after my first (three years ago) and clients frequently ask if I’m pregnant. It’s the joys of my pear-shaped genetics!

  • @lilly_blue i told at the end of the first trimester. It was kind of funny how it happened. One engineer on my team was pregnant and the other girls were like "im sure you'll be next!" And i told one that im close to that I was actually 12w and was planning on announcing the following week. Then a few weeks later that coworker announced she was pregnant too! Haha
I'll do similar this time, announce at the end of the 1st trimester
  • I told one coworker already because I gave her all my baby gear for her little girl, and I didn't want her to get rid of it as she outgrows it if I'll need it again. lol

I only go to the office one or two days a week right now and I'm not the biggest fan of my boss at the moment, so I'm tempted to wait as long as I can to 1. see if he even notices and 2. cause him more stress trying to figure out (over a shorter time period) how to get my job done without me there.

I figure I might start telling more people once we have the NIPT results back in a couple weeks.
  • I've told 2 coworkers (one is my boss), and plan to tell one more after our 9W scan, but as far as telling the rest of the crew and my clients/students, I'll probably tell them at 12-13 weeks. It's been pretty tough to fake the feeling sick. Because of COVID I can't even just pretend it's a run-of-the-mill stomachache or cold.
  • I told my principle yesterday - mostly because I've decided that I will not be returning to work after this school year. I absolutely love my school and I want to make sure they have plenty of time to find a replacement - especially since I teach dual credit/AP and no one currently at the school is qualified to teach my class (I teach at a small private school). I haven't told any other coworkers yet though or any of my family. We will probably share the news with everyone after the first u/s
  • @lilly_blue I've been contemplating when to tell work.  My boss knows I've had issues over the past year with losses and one I told her earlier because I was having some issues.  I have a good relationship with my boss and could tell her now but I think I'm going to at least wait until the NT scan/NIPT testing since that's where I had issues previously.  Probably somewhere around 13-15 weeks.

  • Anyone else not really feel anything going on in the uterus? I can’t remember how I felt with DD - I had a very easy 1st trimester and this one is very similar - but when I first got my BFP there was some heaviness (likely from implantation) and that seems to be gone. Even when I suck in my belly there’s not much different sensation. I guess everything is still so small but it freaks me out so bad having so few symptoms. If it weren’t for a BFP I could be on the show “I didn’t know i was pregnant” right now. I HATE IT.
  • @runningonindie I don’t feel anything in my uterus except some mild cramps here and there. I don’t even feel my bloat when I wear my pants. I feel like I have usually been more bloated at this point but I have changed my eating the last few months and I have been way less bloated in general. So I’m assuming that is playing a role.
  • @runningonindie I could definitely be on the show "I didn't know i was pregnant" - I really don't have any symptoms except extra tired. But I try to reassure myself that this is my normal - I didn't have any symptoms was my first two either.
  • @runningonindie I too am on the hardly any symptoms train and it's been freaking me out.  I had a very rough 3 weeks in January and now nothing.  It's so hard.  While I'm grateful I'm not super sick having virtually no symptoms at all my mind goes to bad places sometimes.

  • It is so reassuring to hear you guys are feeling the lack of symptoms too.
  • @Centralmnmom I feel like my symptoms early on were way worse. I woke from a dead sleep one night running for the toilet and now I barely feel any nausea. It’s weird and definitely sent me spiraling earlier this week. After a reassuring US I’m trying to relax and just enjoy the fact that my first trimester symptoms are mild this time.
  • I was surprised by a recommendation I’d never heard in my first pregnancy: that pregnant women should not eat ANY beef that isn’t cooked well done. Now, burger meat makes sense from a safety standpoint, but steak can’t even be medium? I thought steak was safe if you cooked all sides of it?
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @williams-jen my SIL is pregnant (baby is coming this week!!) and she has said for months that one of the first foods she wants to eat is a steak that’s cooked properly (aka NOT well done). Apparently she’s craved red meat throughout pregnancy and is just so sad every time she eats it haha. So I knew that rule from her! I think it just boils down to everything is safer if it’s cooked all the way through.
  • @runningonindie I’m feeling like this too the past couple days after feeling kind of icky for a while so of course I’m freaked out. Had my first US this past Monday and everything was good but then of course later in the week my symptoms lessened. My first pregnancy I didn’t have many symptoms at all, but it was consistent at least, not off and on like this time.

Maybe this has already been discussed, but have you guys been feeling really out of breath? I know that your heart rate is elevated during pregnancy, but I'm finding I'm having to sit down for a breather after doing simple tasks like taking a shower, or drying my hair. It seems to vary during the day. I'm having trouble deciding whether it's something I should call the doc about or whether it's me freaking myself out and just being an anxious mess
  • @kissyfir1586 This happens from the progesterone, but I also had it in my last pregnancy and ended up being anemic. So def something to ask doc about.
  • @kissyfir1586 ME!! I was at work the other day and I had to go into the bathroom just to get a mask break because I felt like I couldn’t catch my breath! I googled it (I’m def guilty of looking to dr. Google) and it seems like it can be normal due to hormone levels and increases blood volume. But it’s exhausting!
  • @demimondaine good to know. I think I'm going to call my doc Monday anyway. I took a few BP readings with our at home monitor and my BP is higher than I normally run. A little worrying (I do alot of that lately!)

@runningoncookies it is sooo exhausting! I don't think my husband really gets it either. I feel so lazy, not really keeping up on chores the way I normally do. But im just SO tired 😴
  • @williams-jen I have always been told steaks had to be at least medium. I would never waste my money on a well done steak. That’s disgusting.
  • @kissyfir1586 I have been feeling that way too and don’t remember it from my other pregnancies. I’m glad it’s normal!
  • @williams-jen it's definitely more of a concern with ground beef, hence burgers. I won't lie i still eat a medium steak when I'm pregnant, well done steak is just nasty!
  • @chewie5990 I used to be so concerned about food poisoning and then it actually happened to me last pregnancy from a SALAD! It was pretty rough- had to check into the ER for fluids after my body forcefully vacated everything all night. Now it just kind of feels like I’ve been there/done that. I’m still a bit more careful, but I’m not going to drive myself crazy like I did before! Now if I make a steak it’s medium and that’s that!
  • @cassafrass123 oh my gosh that sounds awful. Who would have thought a salad could cause so much trouble!  Making a mental note to super wash my lettuce 😬
  • @kissyfir1586 I definitely get out of breath whenever I have to wear a mask for a prolonged period of time!

Re: meats - I totally still eat a medium steak LOL I’m also extremely tempted to eat cold cuts which I avoided my last pregnancy and frankly it was harder for me than alcohol!!!!! Like someone said above, I just feel like the chances are so astronomically low of there being a problem. I remember during my last pregnancy, I traveled to Italy visiting family and my cousin‘s wife (from italy) was pregnant at the same time as me and she was eating cold cuts and when I asked her if she was worried she looked at me like I was crazy LOL!!!!!
  • @runningonindie the cold cuts are the hardest from for me! I've been craving subs like crazy. During my first pregnancy, I ate my weight in deli meat sammies.  I was blissfully unaware I wasn't supposed to, and didn't die!
  • If you want to be cautious but still enjoy lunch meat, freshly sliced meat from the deli is a pretty safe option. The problem isn’t the meat itself it’s the liquid that deli meat usually sits in and the fact that lunch meat at places like subway or jimmy John’s can change temperature from being stored and then brought out and then stored again.

  • If you want to be cautious... I made a great alternative the other day - it was like my own version of the Arby’s roast beef sandwich. I cooked the cold cut roast beef in a pan with some melted cheese and a pinch of gravy on a fresh club roll from a bakery..... WOW. It was amazing.
