Re: Baby names

  • @bbrahmbhatt @bblair24 worst! I love that name! I LOVE Maeve though- that used to be on my list too.

@pelorunningmama ooh all so good! I love Wells personally <3

@theletlers Nora and Phoebe are so cute

@rexnie Harrison is great- that was on my boy list with DS!

  • @juliebird6 I think Felix is my favorite. DS1 is Gideon and DS2 is Reuben. So trying to find a name we like to go with those.
For any first time mommas my sister suggested to me with my first, practice yelling the name out in a variety of situations, like calling them over to you, like you’re telling it out across the play when it’s time to go, and when they’re in trouble. It actually helped me to thinking of yelling at a kiddo saying a full name first and last like I need their attention to hear how it sounded together!
  • @Serenamarr I love having your kid pick out the name!  He picked good ones too luckily.

  • Thoughts on Emmett David or Owen Micheal (last name R, 1 syllable) for boy names?

I always like getting outsider views on names to make sure I don't overlook some unfortunate initials or odd celebrity similarities or something.. lol

  • @mamabee1113 Those sound good to me!
  • @mamabee1113 love Owen Michael! Our boy name is Michael Owen (and only because DH's name is Michael, but we're still kind of considering switching it to Owen Michael)
  • I thought we escaped name issues by letting our son choose. But apparently dh thought Lia would be spelled lea. And he’s being a total dick about it. To me Lea is pronounced ‘lee’ which is horrible with our middle and last names. And the whole point of a simple short name was to avoid having our child spend her life correcting people constantly. How would you pronounce Lea?
  • @Serenamarr, Lea for me is Lay-uh or Lee-uh, not Lee.  Lee and Li are the only spellings that actually come out as Lee, to my South Texas eyeballs
  • I decided we need a back up in case she pops out as something other than Zoe. I want Calliope or Amelia, and since SO picked DS2 and DD2s names, and even though I didn't love them I, didn't argue, think I should get the back up without any argument. HUMPH!
  • @Serenamarr my middle name is Lea, and it's pronounced Lee. It's a word for meadow.
  • @Serenamarr @riff323 my mind is blown! I would never have thought to pronounce Lea as anything other than Lee-ah.
  • @juliebird6 I think with the sheer amount of poetry I've read it makes sense in my head to pronounce it lee - just like pronouncing sea "see." But it's probably also because it's my middle name and I'm used to it!
  • @thedomesticgeek how do you pronounce your daughter’s name? One of my cousins has a daughter who is Alysiana...looks similar and I thought I’d never meet another!  but maybe I’m totally mispronouncing how you say your DD’s name.
We actually pronounce it like the names Alice and Ana put together. No one gets it right though, it's so frustrating for her. 😬 She was named after her great grandmother's, Alice and Priscilla so her first/middle names are Aliceana Priscilla.
  • @aisukurimsarang @riff323 @juliebird6 It’s just.... Sea. Tea. Pea....Lea!  I just wanted a name/spelling that was literally impossible to mispronounce. Dh stance is he’s never heard of anyone named Lia, it’s a stupid name... my son heard him say that and now has changed his mind from I to a because daddy said so. I’m so irritated.
  • @Serenamarr, that is annoying and frustrating. How nerdy are yall? There's always Leia, as in General Leia Organza, Leader of the Rebellion.
  • @aisukurimsarang you're so much better than me, I always feel like the baby is coming out of my body so I get like... 55% of the vote ;)

@m@mamabee1113 I love both of those. Emmett and Owen are great and not too unique but not too popular. I also love Everett, which is similar.
  • @Serenamarr that is very irritating! I think that all names get mispronounced at some point because people just don't pay attention.
  • @Serenamarr that’s so frustrating! Isn’t there a jewelry line called Lia Sophia? Would you consider an h at the end and do Leah? I hope your son can maybe get back on the name train though and you can all agree on a name and spelling. Hugs!

@mamabee1113  I love them both! I particularly love the name Owen but it was never a contender for DH for some reason. We both liked Emmett but it doesn’t work great with our last name.

Now ladies, I need some girl names. We found out we are having a girl and DH and I thought we had a girl name (Nora) but after seeing her yesterday both looked at each other and thought that’s not her name!
FYI: Our last name is long and horrible to pronounce and has a lot of “Ls” in it, so no L names, they just sound like tongue twisters!

  • @eahayes, I brought two kids with me. I figure I named those, he can name these. I picked the middle name for both, tho.  :)
  • @theletlers Nora was on my short list for DD1, but husband vetoed. We ended up naming her Moira (moy-ra), and decided that was it when she came out. I love the name, but people can't figure out how to pronounce it.

Here are some girls names we are thinking about this time around:
    Emily
    Kinsley
    Adalynn
    McKenna
    Callahan (Callie for short)

I tend to go towards the Irish/Scottish sounding names haha

@cagncoo12 I have never heard of Callahan but I like it!

We're planning to use my last name for this baby (we used my husband's for the last one) and first/middle names from his side.  We're limited to his mom's Irish Catholic family since his dad's family is Chinese and he doesn't want to use a Chinese name.  We got a list from his mom and here are the contenders:

    Veronica
Nell (short for Helen or Helena)
    Frances
    Rose
    Joanna or Johanna

There are not that many options because half the women are named Mary.  My last name is two syllables and starts with a D.  Right now I am leaning towars Helena Rose or Helen Frances. I also thought of Veronica Rose but for some reason that sounds like a porn star name to me.  Any other combos or nicknames people like?  I like Jo for Johanna but I don't really love Johanna or Joanna.

@kadeephd my name is Joanna, people never get it right, so just a word of warning if that's a big deal to you. Then I ask people to call me Jo and they will write it out Joe, like I'm a male. People are pretty ignorant and I know that, but it's something that has always annoyed me.

ETA: I love my name! I really do! I just hate that no one gets it right.
  • @riff323 People always spell my name wrong too, which is one of my hesitations with Johanna or Joanna.  I didn't think about people spelling Jo Joe though.

  • @kadeephd unfortunately you always have to assume people are dumb when it comes to names! At least, that's been my experience. I even had someone pronounce my name "Jonah" one time. I mean... come on!!!
  • @riff323 I guess unless you pick a very common, well known name you will have issues with people spelling it incorrectly.  My first goes by a nickname that is unusual in this country (I've never met anyone other than my grandfather who went by it) but it's only three letters so at least it's easy to spell out when people ask.

@kadeephd, my name is one of the most common, especially among Christian names, and no one spells it right. It's just a fact of life.

I'm partial to Helena, which is my NMIL name (She goes by Elena)**. Also, you could look for English translations of Chinese names. For example, my daughters middle name is Summer, so they gave her a variant of characters pronounced Xia Ji, which is Summer, for her Chinese name.

Since my name translated weird into Japanese, my Japanese professor took the meaning of my name and matched it to a Japanese word with the same meaning.

**Edit - Adding in she's from Ecuador, so the H isn't pronounced, and it's Eh-lehn-uh
  • @theletlers, my mom still can't even pronounce my SOs. It's not that hard, but somehow she just fails epically.
  • @theletlers oh my goodness I LOVE Juniper!!! What a great name!!
  • @theletlers that is so funny - my parents still spell my married name wrong, too! And I have family members who spell my first name wrong, too.

When we named DD I worried about people getting her name wrong, but then I realized it doesn't matter and that no matter what we name her, someone, somewhere is going to mess it up!
  • @theletlers that is the sweetest thing! Would make me go for Juniper as well, especially with these pregnancy hormones I have going on!
  • @theletlers I really like Juniper also!! Phoebe is also precious but I think Juniper is such a neat name... and Juni for a nickname I love!
  • So, we my partners boss asked what we were naming the baby. We told Zoe, and he said, Ugh. Please don't. That's our Dog's name.

What would yall do at this point? We've been coming up with backups for a while because we latched onto Zoe before we even knew we were having a girl. Would you set aside Zoe, and start looking at other names, or say... Aint OUR dog, so what if they have the same name?

We name our animals people names (Gretchen, Daisy, Delilah, Izzy, Faith, Elliot) so this isn't anything big for me. But, I have this feeling it bothers my man.
  • @aisukurimsarang name the baby whatever you want!  Not his decision - how rude of him to say it like that, too.
  • @BuckeyeNut05, you should see NMIL face whenever she asks us, "What's the baby's name?" Zoe Eowyn. She kind of wrinkles her nose. She's mad we didn't choose. Isabel for a middle name.

I actually loved Isabel for a middle name, weighed it, and dismissed it before she even came up with it? WHY?! Because Zoe Isabel T means her initials are ZIT. NMIL still doesn't see the issue.
  • @aisukurimsarang LOL your partner’s boss’s DOG is 10,000% not a valid reason to scratch a name off your list. That he even thought it would be is completely ridiculous.
  • @aisukurimsarang I’d just forget what the boss said. Literally any name could also be a dog name, so we’d be out of luck if we had to avoid names that are also dog names. 😂 Our DD1 is Abby and I’ve known more than one animal named Abby, but that’s a person name 🤷🏻‍♀️ Sorry the boss planted that idea in your head but I would just throw that thought away!
  • @aisukurimsarang yeah that’s not a pet name you need to avoid. I mean if it was your pet that might be different! Heck even the grandparents pet names would be a no go for me. But partner’s boss’s pet is not an issue.
  • @aisukurimsarang I'd stick with Zoe.  That person gets no input into what you name your child.  How rude of them to say something like that!

I'm warming up to calling this girl Nell.  I was initially thinking it would be a nickname for Helen or Helena, but my husband doesn't like those names and I don't think he'll come around.  He does like Nell.  So I think we'll either just do Nell or Nella, or come up with another name we can shorten to Nell.  Nothing stands out though.  Eleanor is a bit too popular for us I think, and we don't care for Ellen much either (though I'd be open to that one).  I know there are other options like Elena but so far nothing has won us over.  There is a second cousin named Penelope so that one is out.  I'm still secretly hoping for Helena but I don't think it's going to happen.
