@reirei84 I second the dry cured meats. We do wine + charcuterie at least once a month. I like to add cornichons, roasted artichoke, fancy olives, sun dried tomatoes, and tapenade. Are you planning on trying nonalcoholic wine? I’d love to get it, but I’m afraid it would be so bad that I would better off with no wine at all.
So I think I’ve been feeling flutters for the first time the last couple days! Is it normal to feel them on the right and left? Is baby moving that much at 17 weeks?
@lalarose22 I’ve felt baby on what felt like the left side, top of my uterus, and my cervix in the span of like 30 seconds. I think it’s totally possible!
csardaszz I wouldn't recommend a non-alcoholic wine. If you like beer, Athletic brewing company has a nice non-alcoholic beer. Something I like to do to feel like a grown up with a cocktail, but not drink is to put some bitters in club soda with a twist. It tastes great and give you a cocktail feeling without any alcohol. There are plenty of non-alcoholic cocktail recipes out there - but to me, they always have soooo much sugar so this is my go-to replacement.
jaclyn0405@csardaszz Thanks! I just did a quick google search when checking and the first thing that popped up was a parents.com article that said "Pregnant women should NOT eat salami during pregnancy as it is essentially a raw/preserved meat full of nitrites and can carry certain harmful bacteria that can make mom and baby sick."
I dunno if that's just an extra level of cautiousness or what, but I'd be happy to indulge in some salami! haha! I've been debating the nonalcoholic wine. Fre makes a sparkling one that I've been a little curious about. I've always been more of a wine person than beer so...
I just realized that my facial toner has Salicylic Acid in it. I checked the ingredient list and it's only 0.5%, but I'm seeing a lot of conflicting information on whether it's safe to use or not. It seems that medical doctors say anything less than 2% is safe - does anybody know, for sure?
@reirei84 As a STM, I've also always eaten cured meats during pregnancy. I almost never Google anything about food and pregnancy. I think I've found something warning mothers off of literally everything and it gets to the point that many mothers are almost frozen in fear and can't eat anything but junk food, which obviously can't be good for you either. I generally recommend people read "Expecting Better" instead, which has great recommendations for a bunch of things, all based around what the actual research is saying (as an academic librarian, I can attest to the fact that just because there was a "study" on something, that in no way means conclusions are a given, unless you know how to properly analyze all the factors they used)!
@reirei84 to be safe, you could always heat the salami and cured meats and just let them come back to room temp to attempt to kill any potential bacteria. Marcona almonds - the ones with olive oil and salt - are a favorite indulgence on our charcuterie boards
@laurenmicheley Your recommendation yesterday sent me to the ginormous wine and beer store. When I found the non-alcoholic beer section waaaaay in the far back corner, I was surprised by the selection! All the Athletic beers were sold out, but I did find a decent non-alcoholic hazy IPA by another company that was worth the trip. Thank you for the recommendation! Even if I didn’t get to try it on my first attempt, I will try again in a couple of weeks.
I swear there are studies that say drink wine...DRINK ZERO things...eat cheese. NO DONT. For me I’m conservative with my face cream and just use Clinique moisturizer (I’ll ignore my aging dark spots 🤬), I stay away from cheeses and sliced meats but I have a weekly glass of wine (that I pour about one ounce in first...drink that and then pour a second ounce so I can pretend I’m an adult). I might get hate for that. But in Japan the women seemed to eat sushi and in Italy drink wine.
So I’m going to do what I feel comfortable with and go from there. Kind of feel the same for parenting honestly. I have independent little sh*ts who I’m hoping will make strong women. I sure get comments along the way 💝😱🥰🥳.
@name1109 For most things, moderation is really key, right? I'm with you. If you and your doc are comfortable with an occasional glass of wine then I say get it, girl!
I had an OB appointment today and those were her exact words... Anything in moderation! DH was asking about the block of brie I ate the other week, and my OB said she ate all kinds of deli meats, cheese etc when she was pregnant. It's more of a concern in less developed countries, but we have good refrigeration and food processing in North America... So it's not something she's concerned with.
I bought a pack of ham and brie on the way home!! 😂
@name1109 No judgement from me on the occasional glass of wine! I definitely do this too and all the midwives I've met with have been fine with it. It's a nice little reminder that I'm human and not just a "pregnant person." In general, I fall in the moderation camp for sure. Am preparing my fresh mozzarella and prosciutto platter for dinner right now!
@name1109 and @ auburnvelvet86 y'all have once again proved to be my people. I eat so much cheese irl that sometimes I just instinctively grab it and eat it and then I'm like "shit, that was soft cheese....." we're trying to keep other cheese stocked right now, so that happens less but everyone can kiss it because you can tell me not to eat fish, and you can tell me not to drink coffee, BUT YOU CANNOT TAKE AWAY MY CHARCUTERIE BOARDS AND WINE (that I definitely have once a week)....
I haven't tried this wine personally but my aunt who can't drink alcohol (it makes her physically sick) likes Ariel winery for non-alcoholic wine. I'll also just have a small glass of wine every once in awhile, not even weekly because I'm so nauseous. My midwife and my previous OB were okay with an occasional small glass. But the geneticist I met with last week was the first doctor I've had that said I shouldn't have any because there are no known safe levels. I was actually surprised to hear a doctor say none at all.
I drink the occasional glass of wine but deli meat is a strong no!!!!! 🤮Because it grosses me out hahah, I don’t eat that non-pregnant. I follow the moderation rule. My last OB followed the moderation rule. The new OB hasn’t discussed any eating or drinking habits with me, I guess she assumes I know everything since I just had a baby... and the nurses don’t return phone calls so I guess Im on my own. 🙄 super annoyed have left numerous voicemails since Monday.
@potofgolden that's annoying they haven't called you back since Monday. Is that normal for them? I'd be annoyed and consider leaving if they didn't have a good reason (lots of staff sick, phone lines down, etc.).
+1 to everything in moderation (if I even think of it 😬). I've been so bad this pregnancy with eating and drinking things that you're supposed to try and avoid (deli meat, soft cheese, pop, etc.). But most of the time I dont realize I've done it until after I've already eaten it. I remember as a FTM telling myself I would be just as diligent the 2nd time around with what I ate and now I'm here. Whoops.
In my defense I was TTC for 14 months and then had DS. Was then breastfeeding. And then TTC for another 18 months before getting pregnant with this little one. The constant, "eat this, not that" and feelings of guilt over what I've put into my body the past 4-5 years has been exhausting. Not that I wont continue to try and do my best for my kids. It's just difficult to keep up with for so long. I havent felt like my body is completely my own in a long time.
Does anyone else get more nervous the closer you get to your next appointment? We have our AS and midwife appointment on July 8 and I’ve been SO excited for it, but the closer it gets the more nervous I am. This could just be my PGAL anxiety creeping back.
@lalarose22 yes, absolutely. Before my 9 week confirmation ultrasound I couldn’t sleep the night before. I’ve started writing down all the positives that point to things going well so I have a visual reminder. Plus the act of writing them out is sort of therapeutic. I’m sure as my AS gets closer I’ll get more and more nervous.
@lalarose22 Yep... 100% I!! feel like I've been waiting for my AS forever. It's tomorrow and I've been worrying for the last week and having bad dreams the last coue days. So nervous that they'll find something wrong. I have a history of infertility and MC, and my OB recommeded I see a counsellor because I've been having severe anxiety. I think it's helped, or at the very least I understand a bit more about what's going on. I just keep trying to tell myself that this pregnancy is not the same as my others and so far there's no indication that anything is wrong. And visualizing our little nugget this time next year!!
@lalarose22 Yes. It only gets better for me each pregnancy once the baby is moving ALLLLLL of the time time and it's undeniable that he/she is fine in there. And then I get anxious again towards the very end (last couple of weeks) overanalyzing the amount of movement.
Mama worry never ends, just shifts focus. At least for me.
@lalarose22 100% get super anxious and panicky before any appointment. Even when I am certain things are fine! I've had such a traumatic past with miscarriages that I feel like I'm forever preparing for bad news.
@llarose22 this is why our SO should be able to be there for all of our appointments. I’m over this corona bs, I need my rock! Thankfully, my doctor is allowing him to come on the 1st... as of now. I hope it stays this way and switches to this way for everyone. I mean we live together so whatever he has, I would have! We will both get temped and have to wear the masks so I don’t get the big deal! One emotional support person is so important to us to ease our anxiety.
I 100% agree with you @potofgolden about having someone with for emotional support. Especially for an A/S where if there was something concerning with the baby, that is when the mother would find out. But even at regular appointments something unexpected could happen. I hope your clinic doesn't change its mind about your SO coming with you!
Question...is anyone feeling like they’re carrying super low? Our A/S noted cervix etc looked good but SO was commenting I’m looking like I’m carrying lower. I swear there’s a lot of pressure down there? Just weird and I hope okay.
@name1109 I do! 🙋♀️ At the AS baby was breech and laying way low, and I feel almost all of the kicks way low. Plus I totally feel alot of heaviness/pressure in my crotch. Definitely hoping she moves up!

@name1109 I'm definitely carrying very low! I carried low with DS as well. And this baby puts so much pressure on my bladder. Baby was head down at my AS so I'm assuming just likes to hang out there. Cervix was looking good!
Question about anterior placenta: Actually, not really sure what my real question is. But I had my A/S a week ago, and in looking over the paperwork later, I noticed that this was noted, but my midwife never even mentioned it/brought it up. It seems like it's common enough, if not the most typical, and only has a few potential side effects. So I'm not super concerned about it. But I'm wondering what others who have had this have been told? For those who read my birth story over in the STM birth story thread, you might connect that I have some lingering distrust with my midwife practice (though I'm seeing a different midwife this go-around). So I'm not sure whether the lack of communication or any further monitoring of this should be raising flags for me or not. Or whether I'm just paranoid and super sensitive about their very laissez-faire (too much so, in my opinion) approach?
@auburnvelvet86 I had an AP last time and I only knew it because I asked the US tech because I suspected as much since I hadn't felt much movement. No one ever mentioned it otherwise.

@auburnvelvet86 it was mentioned to me at 12 weeks because they weren’t picking up heart tones and my doctor got me on the ultrasound machine. She didn’t comment on it other than that was the reason it might be hard to hear the heartbeat.
@hedgepig@surlyjaneausten Thanks! Yeah, I kind of suspected it was no big deal, but, like I said, I'm paranoid about their sometimes overly casual approach. Glad to know that this wasn't the case here! I had to get an ultrasound at 12 weeks too due to troubles hearing the heartbeat, but they never mentioned this as a cause. But other than that, I feel like I've felt baby movements really early (around 15 weeks) and pretty consistently since then, so lack of feeling hasn't been an issue, which is nice.
