Re: The Great Question Thread

  • Question for all of you: When is the appropriate time to begin interviewing pediatricians? Definitely want to be sure that we are giving ourselves the appropriate amount of time to do so!
  • Loading the player...
  • @laurenmicheley I plan to start at the beginning of the third trimester.
  • Thanks everyone for your replies about in-person vs teledoc appointments. I guess since I'm low-risk and not having complications, I'm not having as many in-person appointments. It's cool to hear how other people are being seen.
@laurenmicheley GREAT question. I planned to start around 30 weeks by asking around. I don't know my area well, so it seems more important for me to do a bit of research.

  • @me-mama20 that is bizarre and I would question the hell out of it. I’m a second time mom and Ive always been able to watch the screen. I’m in the US but have friends and family in Canada and I have never heard of this. How do they even enforce this?? Do they turn the screens away.

@potofgolden I had never heard of it before and it makes me really uncomfortable. When I asked the reason they said it was the clinic's policy because sometimes babies are not all healthy and since the technicians can't discuss anything with you they don't want you to see the screen. I've had 2 ultrasounds so far and have only seen my baby for a total of a minute without even an explanation of the picture!

@mimser I should move then because a friend that lives in the neighborhood told me some clinics or hospitals don't even give you printout pictures. This is really upsetting
  • @krystrist2014 trust me I did question it and the technician got aggressive even when I asked for her to turn the screen so I can watch while she does her job. She started telling me how it's the clinic's policy to not allow mothers watching in case an anomaly is detected. Technicians are not allowed to discuss anything with the patients, they wouldnt even tell me how far along I was on my first ultrasound! It is beyond upsetting, frustrating and unsettling really. I've had 2 ultrasounds so far and only saw my baby for a total of 1 minute.. literally.. A friend who lives close by also told me that some clinics and hospitals don't even offer you a printout image. I knew this wasn't right but then again what do I know being an immigrant here right? 🤦‍♀️ Thank you for your response! My next ultrasound appointment is in a different hospital so hopefully it won't  be the same experience
  • @me-mama20 I've never heard of a doctors office not allowing you to look at the screen. Maybe call around to a few local doctors offices and ask what their policies are on ultrasounds? Maybe you can find one that will let you look. I would be upset too.
  • @dumbledoredies it's not my OB's office where I get my ultrasounds. Apparently in Canada you get your ultrasounds in clinics by technicians who are also apparently not allowed to discuss anything with you during the exam. My next appointment is not at the same place so hopefully things will be different 🙏🏼
  • @me-mama20 Eeeee! This sounds horribly frustrating! Totally understand your feelings here; I would feel exactly the same. I wonder why the rationale is that they wouldn't want an expectant mother to see an anomaly - you will have to be informed, regardless.

@me-mama20 I'm from Canada too (Sask) and have had a similar experience. I've had 3 ultrasounds and 2 techs have let me see the screen while the last one wouldn't let me... And they were all at the same clinic!!! Hopefully the tech you see next time isn't as strict!!
  • @me-mama20 maybe the tech had a horrifying experience and told an expectant mother the wrong thing.
  • It’s extremely rare that I log onto the bump’s website and not the app. I have never received a notification that someone has replied to me through the @ . Do y’all get notifications? Where do you find them?
  • @potofgolden I don’t receive notifications when someone replies with the @ either!
  • @mia80 Thank you! I hope you can continue watching your baby at your upcoming appointments 🙏🏼 I just booked my next appointment in a hospital and I made sure to ask. Thank god they reassured me I can watch the screen but I cant record with my phone or take pics if the screen. Also they dont provide us with printouts, I would have to buy the CD of the ultrasound for $30!
  • @potofgolden I'm logging through the app and although I have the notifications on when I'm mentioned in replies i never receive them either 🤷‍♀️
  • New question! Looking at car seats, any good recommendations ?
  • @me-mama20 There's a car seat thread we did a bit ago, so it might be far down by now!  https://forums.thebump.com/discussion/12752469/product-spotlight-series-car-seats#latest

  • Recommendations for workout shorts and sports bras? I’m striking out on shorts everywhere and it’s getting hot!
  • Has anyone tried any of these - or other - non-alcoholic wines? I’ve been enjoying the Heineken 0.0 but still feel like I’m “cheating” whenever I drink it, lol. I remember someone mentioning wine on here awhile back and now I feel like I just might have to explore those as well!

@KateBee I haven't found any maternity shorts but I have a pair of drawstring walking shorts from walmart that are working well. I just tie it below the bump. They were a size bigger than I was prior to pregnancy because I bought them last summer after having DS but that seems to work in my favor for now. I can't put anything in the pockets though or they fall off.
  • When I try to sleep on my side, my bottom arm goes numb and keeps me up. Has anyone else experienced this? Will a certain type of pillow help with this?
  • @warmwinter Are you using a pregnancy pillow? I couldn't live with my snoogle at this point, and highly recommend it if you're in the market!

I have been having these new twitch-like feeling in my belly for the past 2 days, I wonder if it could be baby moving? They sometimes are at the same height of my belly button and maybe 2 inches to the right or left, other times lower but more often also to the side. Could it be it? It almost seems too high or to the side no? I am 19w5d.
  • @mimser Not too high or to the side. It could definitely be baby or just changes in your body. After a while, you start to feel things alllllll over!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @warmwinter yes!!! I wake up every so often because my arm/shoulder has fallen asleep — I’m normally a side/tummy sleeper. I got a big u shaped body pillow from my mom and it DEFINITELY helps to hug it. I still find myself wiggling to a position and waking up tingly though haha.
  • @mama-buckets Thanks for letting me know that it helps! Just didn't want to spend $ on a new pillow and still have an issue... I'll check out the u shaped pillows...
  • Soo where is everyone’s uterus hanging out at this point? Awkward question aside, I’m almost 17 weeks and baby is still so low. It’s starting to feel uncomfortable and very crowded down there. I’m sure it will move up soon, but curious to see if anyone is feeling movement higher up.
  • @surlyjaneausten My baby is also hanging out very low. It just feels heavy or really full. Every once in a while it’s higher and feels different, like there is less pressure.
  • mimsermimser member
@surlyjaneausten I'm 19w4d and apparently it's at my belly button level now and I think I've been feeling baby just below that
  • @surlyjaneausten mine feels high but that could just be because this is #3 and it just knows it has to get up there!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @surlyjaneausten Baby's all over the place, but we saw him as high as mid-way between my belly button and ribcage at my u/s this week.
  • @surlyjaneausten My fundus is getting pretty close to belly button height (19w3d), but I feel baby almost exclusively down in my pelvis. I don't know if this is just where she's hanging out, or has to do with where my placenta is, or something else 🤷‍♀️ It's definitely different than with my son.

  • @mimser that sounds like kicks to me.
  • @KateBee this is a bit late as I haven't checked this board in a long time but I've been taking Zofran since week 9 for nausea and its been a lifesaver!!!Has it helped you? At first my midwife wasn't sure if I should take it in the first trimester but then she did more research and said it should be fine, for which I'm so thankful! I was so sick and I don't know how I would have survived without it!!
  • @surlyjaneausten at 17w +1 baby still feels really low and it is definitely crowded down there and very uncomfortable

  • Weird question, but any ideas what I can add to a charcuterie board that's pregnancy approved? Our anniversary is next week and our tradition is to gorge ourselves on wine and charcuterie all night. Pasteurized cheeses, crackers, and fruit are a go, but I'm really wanting something to substitute the salamis and sliced meats. That's my favorite part! Any ideas?
  • @reirei84 from all my research, dry cured meats such as salami and soppresata are safe during pregnancy! So I would stick to those and you will be good!
