@rivercitynik It’s definitely not an issue of my husband not being open to it! It’s more that we think some particularly conservative/religious family members would give us a hard time about it. And if it were me with the boring last name I probably wouldn’t even be considering it, but there’s only a handful of people in the whole country with my last name, and I’m an only child. I don’t think it’ll totally die out, because my grandpa’s brother had sons who have it and then went on to have their own sons. But it still makes me a little sad to be the last of us in my grandpa’s line. But you’re right, I’m going to have to get used to people's negative opinions soon I’m sure! No doubt we’ll talk about it more once we find out boy/girl and start really discussing names.
Since we know its a boy our name is finalized to...... Maverick Alexander. We are so excited! One of our biggest things is that we didn't want to name this baby after anyone like we did with our oldest sons middle name. It was also nice because our gender reveal on FB was also a name reveal.
@viola_mama One of DH's childhood friends was given his mother's last name. It was a similar situation where her husband had a super common name (like Smith) and she had a much more uncommon name that she felt really strongly about. They grew up in a relatively conservative area, and I don't think it was really a big deal for the kids growing up, at least not with peers/teachers. I am sure other parents had Opinions about it. I think it's worth considering, maybe you can talk to YH about it more. If people ask questions, you could always say exactly what you said on here. DH and I had kind of the opposite situation, my name is super common and his isn't. I didn't change mine when we got married, and they wouldn't work hyphenated, so DD has his last name. He has told me before that if my last name was my mom's (badass) maiden name, he would have even considered taking my name, but who knows.
@hypermusic Nice to hear other married people are doing it! I tried to tell my husband before we got married how great his first name sounded with my last name, but he wasn’t going for it. 😆
It's settled, we're DONE thinking about it but we're keeping a secret from our family and friends until little girl has arrived.. but yall I'm in love with my little Selene Elise already and can't wait for our little Lenny to get here! I was a little apprehensive, both our girls will have the same initials, but MH just brought up that this means it will be less confusing having hand-me-downs labeled with initials because it's the same anyway lol.
I have a long list of E names, and I’m considering the names Elia or Eliana - my concern is people mispronouncing her name. I like Eliana pronounced “Ellie-ahh-nuh” so she could have the nickname Ellie. I like Elia pronounced “Ee-lee-uh” instead of “Ellie-uh”. Do you think these names would get butchered all the time?
@tara4910 I absolutely love the nn Ellie and tried to get MH to go for it with Penelope... but he really likes Penny and its starting to grow on me too. I think Eliana is pretty straight forward as that is how I read it. TBH I did not read Elia how you would like for it to be pronounced, which is such a pretty name. However, many names are mispronounced and people get corrected. If you don't want to change the spelling, then just go with what your heart says.

@tara4910 TBH I love both names, they may get mispronounced but I didn't when I read them.. so it's a coin toss. I do think Eliana is a little less easier to mess up though if you are looking for a reason to go one way over the other? (But I SUPER love E names.. that's why both my girls have E middles..)
@tara4910 I read Elia as “Ell-ee-uh” probably because I know an Emilia (Em-ee-lee-uh). It’s also similar to Elias which might cause some confusion. I feel like Eliana is pretty straightforward; I can’t really think of a way to pronounce it other than the way you want. I love the name/NN Ellie but that was DH’s ex’s name so that ruled it out, haha.
Ellie is what we have chosen for a girl name. I still keep going back and forth on a boy name - either Logan or Miles. If it was a our first, I think it would be much easier. Trying to find a name that goes with my other two boys is proving a challenge - Grayson and Reid. Not really sure why though - I just like things to flow!
@tara4910 I wouldn't worry so much about name butchering. If people are going to do it, they just will. With DS1 I wanted to make sure it was a name that cant be butchered. We named him Eli. We still get people who call him Ellie instead. 🤦♀️ On a name for this baby. We are liking Xavier so DH tells his family that is what we think the baby's name will be and then he pronounces it as Zavier. Now I wasnt ready to announce since we hadn't come up with a middle name we like and we were still trying to decide in general plus he butchered it and now I am not liking it as much. But all his family now thinks that's babys name so I guess I am stuck with it. DH also gave them the rest of our list and they nixed every other name on the list. Another reason why I didn't want anyone to know the names we were considering yet.
Thanks guys. I don't know why I'm overthinking things. People mispronounce my name all the time and I just correct them and it never really bothers me, so not sure why I'm making it a thing! @pengy16 I can't believe his family felt okay just saying "no" to a whole list of other names, what if you really loved some of those names! People are so insensitive. @Mommy2Boys87 I love both Logan and Miles, and they both go well with your other boys names. Miles was the boy name I had chosen had my first been a boy. We like the same names!
@Mommy2Boys87 I find each name harder to come up with, too. Our first wasn’t so hard, our second was a bit harder and this third name is the hardest by far! I agree, I want to make sure any name we choose “flows” with our other names... and to make it harder we’ve decided to go team green with this one!
@tara4910 Both of my kids' names are HARDCORE mispronounced all the time, particularly my girl whose name has traditional Gaelic spelling. So, I say if you love it, go for it. I definitely understand the hesitation, though, and I also had the conversation with DH about having people mispronounce our daughter's name her whole life. We ultimately decided that we loved it either way, and I insisted that she have a traditional, classic, easy-to-pronounce middle name to kind of balance the scales, so maybe that's an option? Both names you've chosen are so pretty!
Okay! So we finally decided on baby names!!!! I know we are having a boy, but He doesn’t want to know until the baby arrives. So, we still had to come up with names. He was angling for a Celestial theme and he loves names that are a little out there. So we chose a girl name yesterday: Ylara Andrea (Pronounced Elara ON-Dray-uh) after the moon of Jupiter “Elara” and Andrea for a well respected grandmother he never met. For a boy he wanted Star Wars themed and after I nixed Anakin, Vader, Boba Fett and Windu (🙄) we settled on Solo Christopher (middle name after my brother). Totally fits His quirky side but names I can live with. So! Solo Christopher will be joining us in August!
@mrswheeler812 Maverick is an awesome name! My 8 year old son is named Maverick and I love it because it's not super common. I've only ever heard of one other boy named Maverick!
@mrswheeler812@KansasFarmMomma Ok, I have a few questions about Maverick if you don’t mind! My DH is gunning for that name hardcore but I’m not sold, mainly because I don’t feel it goes with our other kids’ names (which are more Top 10/popular/classic) and also because I couldn’t really care less about the movie Top Gun so I’m not convinced we should name our kid after a character from it (DH is obsessed with the movie and can recite it line for line). Can I ask what (if anything) you use as a nickname, or what you plan to use? Mav? Rick? Also when people hear the name do they ALWAYS mention Top Gun? Is that why you guys chose the name? I know it’s the only boys name my DH truly loves so I’m trying to wrap my mind around it. We are team green so need both a boy and girl name and I find boy’s names so tough! Thanks!!
@laur84ns could you use it as a middle name? Or do you have that already picked out? I know different couples have different methods for choosing a name, but I think ideally both of you should be happy with the first name even if it’s nobody’s first choice.
@laur84ns My husband actually picked it out from a random list and we didn't even think of Top Gun until a friend of ours mentioned it. So far only a handful of people have made the reference and we aren't bothered by it. We plan to use and already use Mav for a nickname and will probably throw in some variations of his middle name Alexander as well once he gets here. Our older DS is named Oliver George so its an older name and had family connections that we didn't want this time around. So Oliver and Maverick, Ollie and Mav, George and Alexander. We do tend to call our DS literally anything but his name 80% of the time though. Plus I think it would be hilarious to add Highway to the Danger zone to my birth playlist. Plus now I can sing songs from Hamilton to him XD
@KansasFarmMomma I love it! I didn't realize until after we announced his name that My old Voice coach named her youngest Maverick too but that is the only one I know of and they live in Germany now so it's not like we are worried about classroom confusion XD
@roo_baby That’s what I’m thinking, maybe offer it up as a middle name. We don’t have any names settled yet for boy or girl. We are just lost this third time around. We had one boys name picked out that we both liked but both our kids are girls so we’ve never used it... I assumed we’d use it if this is a boy but then my DH sprung Maverick on me and is so set on it.
@BusinessWife Oh really? I haven’t actually met a Maverick yet. I’ll have to look into the popularity! I just can’t seem to get passed the Top Gun thing (probably because I know that’s why he wants to use it!) @mrswheeler812 Thanks so much for the insight on what went into picking the name! I like Maverick with Oliver!! That’s a cute sibling set
@laur84ns We didn't get it from the movie, I think I've actually only seen it once. We live in rural Kansas and we wanted a more western boys name. We had originally planned on going with Wyatt but it's becoming increasingly more common so when I saw Maverick on a list of western names, I loved it. My Maverick goes through phases where he wants to be called Rick. Last year he signed all his school valentine's "Rick". I try to remember to oblige but I tend to forget. I actually don't get nearly as many Top Gun comments as I expected honestly, but it may also be the geographical area also. Names like Colt, Roper, Cactus, Wyatt, Remington, and Ruger are not uncommon here lol
So I have been set on our girl's FN for some time, but DH isn't crazy about the FN MN combo I have in mind - thinks it's too ethnically from a country where we are not. 🤷 Another option I love includes a FN that is a family name on his side, plus the MN I had originally in mind for a FN, but makes for the same initials as DD. I'm not sure that's a deal breaker tho? Thoughts???
Another option would be another FN I have long liked, with the original FN in the MN position, but then it almost sounds... thematic with DDs name? So I'm not sure I can go through with it. I feel like that's more of a problem for me than having the same initials as one's sister.
@BusinessWife I will say that all of my nieces have an A first name and an R middle name. So they all have the same initials. It's really kinda cute. My other friend gave both of her boys M names. I don't really have any more insight than that since we don't even have any contenders on the name and my 4yo's NN of Sneakers for the baby may be it 🤦♀️
@BusinessWife I'm a big believer on initials meaning something. My husband and I share 3 initials in the same order and if I would have been named with the first name we would have the exact same initials. my Older DS initials are OGW which just makes me believe he will be an original for his whole life. This ones initials will be MAW which looks aesthetically pleasing and makes me think he will be a good looking little dude. Personally I think they should have different initials as they are different people. Its obviously a personal choice though!
We've had a girl name picked out since we had our last baby. However, this time around it's another boy so we had to think of another name. I'm not overly sold on what we have chosen but I know it'll grow on me once I see him.
Our girl name was Emilia Claire.
For boys names I liked Nicholas, Nathaniel, or Jack. Hubby didn't like any of them so we settled on his idea this time.
