We're having a hard time with names. Everything my SO picks I pretty much hate.
We had agreed on a boy's name but found out last week that we're having a girl. (Which I'm beyond excited about)
I feel like because we're from different cultures, it's making it harder. He likes all these names that I grew up with that I feel are over done or I know too many people with that name.
I would prefer something from his culture. But I keep finding names I like that end up rhyming with his last name.
@tyrion_ I jokingly asked my SO if we could change our cat's name so we could use it.
@ziggymama06 I’ve always loved Penelope and Penny as a nickname! We also gave DS a grandmother’s name as a middle name (her name is Frances and his middle name is Francis). I love honoring grandmothers that way since their names can get lost in the family tree.
Ok we now have some options at least that we have agreed upon (which is hard because DH and I have very different tastes): teagan marie torin james Finley (fin) patrick nora ann
not sure of the sexes yet so we tried to come up with two of each to cover every possibility.
DD is Maevy (mae). We like to keep it Irish/Gaelic to tie in our ancestry.
We have been having a horrible time with names as well since finding out we are likely having a boy. The name we are leaning towards most recently is Carson. So far it's one of the only names that's stuck to the list - since we both want to agree on the first name, we have been striking names off the list if one of us doesn't like the name. We have such drastically different tastes!
@babytimeagain I like Dean as a first name, it's a bit more uncommon. But William is such a classic name, you can't go wrong with either!
@mrs_sheddy Brooks is such a cute name! Ray is a classic too. And I love Isla!
@rivercitynik I didn't realize that Theodore is Irish... Teddy and Theo are soooo cute! I actually really like Arlo... I haven't heard it before but it flows so nicely! You could always have an August baby boy named August then maybe a June baby girl named June?! (Or May or April depending on timing!)
It's weird how hearing (reading) that complete strangers like a certain name make you feel better about it.. so thank you to all those responding to that! (I'm so bad with tagging when it's more than one person. As I get better at recognizing names hopefully I'll get better with tagging!!)
@rivercitynik I felt the same way when my husband said he's set on Brooks, then he wanted his dad's name as the middle name. I was like ALRIGHT you realize it's your last name too, right? Lol. Also with August/June-ah that is really hard! Honestly though, those close to you you can just explain "we weren't trying to do a theme!" and to the strangers... who cares! It would be different if it was August for the boy and August for the girl.
@tara4910 I think my jaw dropped to the ground when he made a disgusted face after I said the name. I guess I hadn't said it outloud but I was totally set in my mind that if it's a girl she'd be Eden. Lol!
@maelove Teagen and Finley would be SUCH a cute combo! All the names are adorable though.
@tyrion_ That is our philosophy as well. We have zero names. Zero. With both our boys we were basically last minute on their names, ds1 wasnt named until he was 2 days old because we couldn't decide! Ds2 was named the day before he was born, so I'm expecting the same last minute shenanigans.
@mrs_sheddy I love those names! If we were having a girl one of our top names was Evelyn June, and then we were going to call her June because we have 2 nieces who are Emmalyn and Ellery! So obviously I love the name June. Eden June sounds good too! Then y'all could figure out what you wanted people to call her & that might be a good bargaining tool to use with DH😀.
It took us forever to come up with DS's name and we had a short, short list of options. Our current frontrunner is Everett for DS2. We are trying to come up with a middle name that is from my side of the family since DS1's middle is from DH's side.
So we/I like: Everett James Everett Townzen
We also have Pierce, Blair (DH side), Philip, Paul or Joseph to consider.
Also-Rant- Apparently DH told MIL that we were thinking about Everett and she said 'eww'....then she called back later and said she loved it 🙄.....but seriously, who 'EWWs' a name?? If you don't like it keep your mouth shut! Plus, the way she spelled my 2 SIL names is so wonky, we aren't looking for advice....byeeee✌🏼
@mrs_sheddy Louis is on my short list too but DH is not sold. I love Lou and Louie as nicknames too!
The other day I was talking to an Irish colleague whose son is named Cillian and thinking how much I liked that name. But, DH pointed out that DS’s name is Ian and if we use the American spelling, Killian, we’d be naming our second child Kill Ian. So it’s basically the worst name I could possibly choose for us 😂
@gomillis LOL. I love Irish names but there isn’t even a whisper of Irish in our heritage so I would feel weird using one. I will just live vicariously through those of you who are actually Irish.
@mrs_sheddy what about using Rachel or something like that as a middle name for a girl to honor your dad?
@roo_baby that's a nice idea! We did discuss "Rae" as a middle name for a girl, but didn't think about it with the name June. Not sure if June Rae flows great, but I like the meaning behind it!
@gsmomplus1 I'm not sure we'll share our name with family this time. At least not extended family. I really don't want anyone's opinion and they're less likely to give it after the baby is born. Everett is a great name. Not out there but not common either.
Ok I was perusing through my husband's and my ancestry charts and noticed that his great grandpa was James Thomas. My favorite grandpa is James and my dad was Thomas and we had been thinking about using those names in some order. I'm just not sold on it though. Either way he would go by James but I think Thomas James sounds better. However, being a teacher I'm apprehensive about naming a child and calling them by their middle name.
James Thomas (James for my grandpa, Thomas for my dad, and it was literally my husband's great grandpa's name) or Thomas James and go by James (but does it sound better? Good enough to have to go by his middle name?)
Or should we go back to the drawing board? Either way this name has to flow with Sam and Will. Does Sam, Will and James even sound ok?
Ahhhh I hate this! And this will turn out to be a girl...so all will be for naught.
@jwhite3116 I think if you're planning on calling him James, you should make that his first names. I have many teacher friends and, as you've pointed out, they complain that a first name should be the name & parents make it difficult on them haha I also think James goes well with Sam and Will. Very classic!
@jwhite3116 My only concern would be how do you feel about TJ or JT because I feel like either of those could end up being nicknames depending on which way you go. I think I would go James Thomas though, because I'm not a huge fan of "Tom" as a name.. but if you don't feel the same then maybe that could work.. to have a Sam, Will and Tom. They are all very classic names.
@jwhite3116 I agree with @kgrgreen - if you intend on calling him James, I’d make that his first name. To make it his middle just seems confusing especially if your other two go by their first names. James is a great name and it sounds nice with Thomas as a middle. Also the flow of the first-middle-last is something we stress about so much when pregnant but honestly how many times are you going to say his full name out loud over the course of his life? Maybe graduation... his wedding... ? I’d go with James Thomas, it’s a solid name!
Thanks ladies. My dad was Tom and there is no way I'd be comfortable with anyone calling him that. I also prefer JT or TJ so that's a plus too. So for now James Thomas is the first choice.
@gomillis kill ian omg 😆 yeah totally don't go with that.

We still have a little while before we find out. Bit we are down to two girl names, Rosemary Louise or Edith Marie. We both love the older names. Traditional, but not too common anymore. Our son is Caemon. And we have zero boy names we can agree on. My issue is I'm not a fan of shortened versions of boys names. And older boys names are just cringy for some reason.

@gomillis What a sweet way to honor your grandmother by just changing the vowel to make it masculine.

@maelove I love all four of those names!
@ziggymama06 my great grandmother was Bernice and she was so kind and funny she loved to be 109!
