@RedBaramid so jealous of your sewing skills. I am lost when it comes to that. I ordered a mask from Etsy, which I am actually happy with. Put it to the test this morning at Walmart. I was surprised to see the majority of shoppers wearing masks - that was not what I saw the last time I was out, about 1.5 weeks ago. Glad to see that people are taking things serious. But you are right - it feels weird, because it has been something that was always looked at in our culture.
@RedBaramid I used this pattern and made one for myself and 4 year old (they have an adult size and child size pattern). I used an old pair of gap black work pants that have slight stretch to the fabric. I’m really happy with how they turned out.
DH had to pick up a prescription for me yesterday. He said the pharmacy was empty (except for the 4 employees working) and everyone was wearing masks. We've been living off InstaCart and Amazon deliveries. I am so thankful to have technology so I don't have to step foot in the grocery store
Please, please, please take care of yourself and be safe and take all the precautions. *TW* Loss mentioned:
This is the first report I've seen on preterm labor due to the mother contracting the virus. Hits so close to home. The mom was 22 weeks gestation. I guess this is an example of complications that are still developing as we better understand COVID, especially with pregnancy.
@kgrgreen I saw that headline last night, it's what made me put down the news for the day. It's also what finally made my husband agree that wearing a mask was what was best for all of us when he goes out for groceries. Every day these babies are inside is a gift.
@tyrion_ From the reports today it looks like he's on oxygen not on a
ventilator which means that if he was anyone else, he would probably be on a
high dependency ward not intensive care. Obviously, I don't have an issue with
the doctors being extra cautious about the leader of the country. It is still unsettling
but also not that surprising if you think about the number of hours he's probably
been working, even since he's been ill.
Whew, Boris is out of the hospital and ok. I’m not British but man did it make me nervous when he was put in the ICU - really hits home how serious this is and how no one is safe/spared.
@kgrgreen Oh gosh, I hadn’t seen that article. Just terrible. It really is a nerve wracking time to be pregnant. I will breath a bit of a sigh of relief next month when I hit 24 weeks...
@laur84ns I'm glad he's getting better it really has been a bit of a shock with him being so ill. His partner is also 7m pregnant and was also ill, but was ok at home and I've thaught about how worried she must have been a lot this week.
I’m thinking about having my cleaning lady come next week. Is this the worst idea ever? My husband, daughter, and I have all been home together from work/school since mid March and things get so messy with all of us here 24/7. I haven’t had her come since the first week of March. I’ve done as much as I can myself each week, but I’m physically not able to do certain things right now due to sciatica. If I have her come I would definitely find out if she has had any sick contacts, have her wear a mask, etc. I’m just really struggling to keep up with the housework and it’s really stressing me out that things aren’t as clean as I’d like them to be. Also, I live in Southern California and there is a fair amount of community spread/new cases here Ugh, advice please.
@tara4910 I would just breathe and embrace the chaos.. or do what you can and ask hubby for more help. Is it really worth it to bring someone in? And even then if I was her, I'd be questioning if I could really trust you. Why do they want me to come into their home during all this? I mean I could be wrong, maybe she'd be happy to come in and maybe everything would be fine but to me this is just an unnecessary risk. I'm not keeping up with the housework like I'd like to either.. I feel awful about it, but it is what it is right now.
@tara4910 I think you need to weigh the pros/cons and figure out what you and your family (and cleaner) are comfortable with. Personally, after weighing the risks I’m continuing to have my cleaner come biweekly. She wears a mask and gloves the entire time and is taking all this seriously. My mental health through all this matters too, and having a clean house really helps my anxiety.
@tara4910 isn’t it illegal to have cleaners come in California? Not that anyone would report you, but it probably means you shouldn’t. But if you are only concerned about the health risk, I think as long as you are all not home when she’s there and she wears a mask, it’s probably pretty low risk. If anything, it’s more a risk for her than for you.
@tara4910 We had Stanley Steamers come in and clean our family room carpet and the dining room hard wood about two weeks ago. They as always wore the booties but he had a face mask and gloves on the entire time and didn't touch anything but his own equipment and the screen door with his elbow and willingly allowed us to check his temperature before coming in. It feels amazing knowing the carpet is so clean right now and it did wonders for my anxiety. If proper guidelines can be followed and you trust her then I say do it. But maybe wipe down things again after she leaves.
Thank you all for your kind responses. ❤️ It really is a mental health thing to have my home a little cleaner right now. With both of us working at home full time and trying to be somewhat present parents I’m feeling pretty overwhelmed. This might give me back some feeling of control of my environment. I am still torn about what to do. I guess I have to talk to her and see what she has been doing the past month for other families and what she is comfortable with.
Just posting some interesting and possibly good news for people like me that cling to facts and data when stressed. My state (NY) did a random sampling of 3,000 people all across the state and found that 13.9% of the people in the sample had the antibodies for COVID-19. Scaled up, that means that 2.7 million people (out of the 19.5 million that live here) have already been infected. Which means that the virus may not be as deadly as we thought, approximately a 0.5% mortality rate currently. Obviously we need a ton more research and testing, but that plus the public golf courses in my county reopening tomorrow and the local hospitals starting to offer elective outpatient procedures starting next week makes me feel incredibly hopeful.
@wednesdaygirl1019 That's really interesting. Here they are currently saying
that the antibody tests aren’t accurate. But those could just be the ones in
the UK. My husband works in epidemiology in the local health service and says
that there are currently two schools of thought on the outbreak. First that that
hardly anyone has had it and it has a super hight hospitalisation rate or
secondly load of people have had it and the mortality rate is well below 1%,
with this being the most likely option.
@tara4910 in terms of having a cleaner come, they aren't considered essential workers in my state so I would hold off if at all possible. It is to protect you and her/him obviously...but also others. She/he is likely exposed to many others including her family, grocery stores, potentially even other clients. I know it is hard but I think it is important to do what we can to avoid unnecessary contact despite the risk being low. Frontliners are sacrificing a lot more than a house cleaner right now, ya know? I 100% don't mean to be abrasive or to take validity from the anxiety I know you must be feeling- I am just pretty invested because DH is a firefighter/medic and I am an PA.
