I've been a daily weed smoker for approximately 2 years due to depression/anxiety. It had been a lifesaver for me. I always planned to stop once I got pregnant, but when I quit once I found out at 4 weeks, my depression/anxiety was so bad I started back up. I feel so guilty smoking but do not want to take anti depressants. My husband is supportive of whatever decision I make. The weed has also helped with all of my pregnancy symptoms, sore breasts, nausea, headaches, insomnia and my appetite. Anyone have a similar situation? What did you do? How did you find peace of mind smoking while pregnant OR if you quit, did you supplement with anything?

All I will say is that I had a friend that smoked weed through her whole pregnancy, and the kid had health issues from day one: she regretted ever smoking it, as she watched her son in NICU. Today, cognitively he is ok, but delayed compared to his peers, is asthmatic, and severe allergies.
She quit weed after having him and before having her second. Her second had no health issues. To this day (12 years later, she still regrets it).
As she said, I don't know if the weed caused the issues of him, but I regret not giving him the best possible chance.
please please speak to a healthcare provider. there are anti-depressants approved for pregnancy & you may also get a referral to a therapist to help you through the pregnancy. You'll also want to consider what happens when the baby is here - will you be smoking weed in your house around an infant? may want to consider alternatives now since it is absolutely affecting your pregnancy by continuing.
In at least 23 states and the District of Columbia, using drugs during pregnancy is considered child abuse. Women risk losing custody of their children, and several states require women who use drugs during pregnancy to undergo mandatory drug treatment. At least one state threatens criminal charges.
Even in states where marijuana is legal for medical and/or adult use, using pot while pregnant can get you in trouble. In Colorado, for example, where marijuana is sold legally, hospitals may notify child protective services if your baby tests positive for THC at birth."
I've personally known kids who had FAS (fetal alcohol syndrom). The results are not pretty, and they are now handicapped for life.
Why don't you want to take antidepressants? I can understand not wanting to take medications, but you essentially are with weed except you are doing it extremely dangerously without the advice of a doctor.
As far as your pregnancy symptoms, if the nausea is extreme, there are medications for that and also more natural supplements like B6. For your other symptoms or if you have mild morning sickness, well, you kind of need to just suck it up. Pregnancy comes with symptoms. It'd be nice if there was a completely safe way to not have any of them, but there's not at this point in time.
Agree with everything previous posters said. Especially that you need to be honest with your doctor. Be honest about the drug use, and about the anxiety. Things don't get easier post-partum when the nights are long and sleepless and your hormones are haywire. A doctor can help you manage your anxiety and be the best mom for your baby.
Please talk to your doctor and try to find another way to manage your anxiety while you are pregnant. There are many many medications which are safe for use during pregnancy. Even those that aren't category A-level safe are safer for your baby than inhaling marijuana or tobacco are. Medications that are category B-C, for example, are graded that way because they can't be absolutely proven as safe (due to the ethical issues of doing double blind drug testing on pregnant women), but they also have not been proven unsafe. Inhaling tobacco and/or marijuana has been proven unsafe. Is it possible your kid will be one of the lucky ones who is fine? Sure. But do you really want to take that chance? This isn't the same as having a glass of wine every so often (which has also not been proven unsafe). This is actually dangerous and has been proven to actively cause adverse outcomes in babies.
As an aside, i hate that people interpret "drug use" during pregnancy as dangerous, and include drugs as prescribed by a licensed doctor in that category, but think that "natural" remedies are safe, and will include things like marijuana as "natural." Just because it grows in the ground doesn't make it safer than a drug that is created in a lab and has undergone EXTENSIVE safety testing. IT IS OK TO TAKE MEDICATIONS WHILE PREGNANT, PROVIDED THAT YOU CLEAR THEM WITH YOUR DOCTOR. Many of them are perfectly safe.
Something else that other posters have not mentioned is that some of the symptoms you felt (the return of your anxiety/depression) after you quit smoking marijuana are also symptoms of withdrawal. So, essentially your body was going through detox on top of being newly-pregnant, so your mood and physical symptoms were amplified. This is to be expected when you quit a substance, even a so-called natural one, like marijuana.
I highly suggest that you be honest with your doctor so that you can find the best course possible for managing your pregnancy symptoms in conjunction with your anxiety & depression. They may recommend that you taper off the marijuana rather than simply quitting cold turkey, which sends your body into shock.
It should also probably be mentioned, especially in light of what @babyodo said above, that it might benefit OP to find another way to manage her anxiety NOW so that she can continue to manage it via non-marijuana methods after the birth. There isn't a lot of detail in the post about how MUCH she is smoking, but if she was in fact experiencing withdrawal, i have to assume it was enough to make her legally impaired, at least on occasion. It's not a great idea to be mentally impaired while caring for a newborn, unless there would be another, sober adult there to tend to the child at all times, which is pretty unlikely.
At that point, it's still dangerous to the baby, just in a different way. I would give that same advice to a casual drinker - it's best not to be drunk when alone with a newborn as well (having a drink or two and not becoming impaired is totally fine, of course). There are several ways to manage anxiety that do not involve becoming mentally impaired, and those methods should be fully explored ASAP. You will already be impaired from lack of sleep - adding mind-altering substances to the mix at that point could have dire results.
OP, not sure if you will return to see everyone's replies, and I'm sure if you do, it may not be what you wanted to hear.
But it's also all true. No one here is going to co-sign something potentially *extremely* harmful to your baby, out of loving kindness to you, an internet stranger, and to a baby we will most likely never meet. We can't be there to hold your hand through the process, but please feel welcome to come back and update us, vent, and maybe join your BMB if you feel you need some more support. Quitting daily use of any drug, even "just" marijuana, will probably not be easy. Talk to your doctor, and be honest with your partner. You may also find a group like NA helpful, to meet other people who have gone through the same struggles. (((Hugs))) They even have women's groups where you may feel more at ease than in a mixed group, or perhaps your partner would agree to come with you in the beginning for support.
I feel like you asked for no judgement and most people tried not to buy judgy, but they still sound kinda judgy. Sorry girl. I smoked marijuana regularly too before I got pregnant. I decided to quit because I didn't use it for the same reasons as you, but I understand where you're coming from. I don't have an answer for you because when I researched it, the research was very mixed. So I just quit just in case. But I understand why you want to continue. I'm sorry I can't give you an answer and I hope you figure it out 💙

I don’t think anyone here was judgmental. The reason there is no research is because it would be unethical to conduct studies, which should tell you that it’s dangerous enough to quit. Just because OP uses it medicinally and not recreationally doesn’t make it any less dangerous to her baby. There are other options to treat anxiety that she needs to discuss with her doctor to get a plan going forward.

I don't know why you say the research is "mixed."
From the National Institute of Health https://www.drugabuse.gov/publications/research-reports/marijuana/can-marijuana-use-during-pregnancy-harm-baby - "There is no human research connecting marijuana use to the chance of miscarriage, although animal studies indicate that the risk for miscarriage increases if marijuana is used early in pregnancy. Some associations have been found between marijuana use during pregnancy and future developmental and hyperactivity disorders in children. Evidence is mixed as to whether marijuana use by pregnant women is associated with low birth weight or premature birth, although long-term use may elevate these risks. Research has shown that pregnant women who use marijuana have a 2.3 times greater risk of stillbirth. Given the potential of marijuana to negatively impact the developing brain, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that obstetrician-gynecologists counsel women against using marijuana while trying to get pregnant, during pregnancy, and while they are breastfeeding."
That link does note that more research is needed, but still, I would hardly call that "mixed." I think it solidly comes down on the side of "probably harmful."
@beaglelove2 I feel like you equate "judgy" with not getting the answer you want.
The fact is that there are scientifically proven safe ways to manage depression and anxiety during pregnancy. Marijuana doesn't happen to be one of them. I'm a Colorado native, so I'm hardly against the use of pot (hell, my dad is a 67 yr old lawyer that smokes), but I'm still pro-science.
ETA: OP hasn't been active since they day she posted this, so we're probably all replying in vain
Agree, I do not see judgement. Sorry if a true story with a true human is "judgy" and that there are better options for her issues - then again she will probably not be back.
Honestly, these replies have been a LOT nicer than some of the other responses to one-off posts we've gotten in the past. Not at all "judgy."
I'm a huge cannabis advocate and proponent for it to be legalized, but I still don't necessarily agree that a woman should partake while they're pregnant. There are too many unknowns associated with it at this point and it's just not worth whatever risk (big or small) that could be associated with using it (smoking, dabbing, eating, or vaping). A few studies have shown that using cannabis while pregnant might not be harmful but nothing conclusive has been found because studies on pregnant women using cannabis are tricky (oftentimes the participants are using other drugs or smoking cigarettes as well), controversial, and typically deemed unethical for a myriad of reasons that I'm sure you can understand.
I have suffered from clinical depression and anxiety since I was 16 years old and while I chose to use cannabis pre-pregnancy as a form of medication (I currently have a medical card and live in a state where consuming cannabis is legal), I have sought out a different method for dealing with my issues during pregnancy that have been proven medically safe -- Zoloft (Sertraline), for instance, has done wonders for my anxiety and depression.
Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more in depth about this.
I wasn’t a weed smoker but I ate edibles frequently before my pregnancy, I did stop once I found out I was pregnant because I know that if something were to happen I wouldn’t be able to live with the guilt. I too suffer from anxiety and depression but I didn’t eat edibles for those reasons. I will say that knowing I’m pregnant and not being able to partake in eating them anymore, I have found other things to fill that “void” I go to therapy, I do daily affirmations and I meditate and incorporated more exercise. I do wish you the best of luck and hopefully you find another way to manage your anxiety and depression over the next several months.
Unfortunately, the sad thing is that we all responded with honest posts. The OP was a post and run. She has not been active since she posted this. I think we gave sound advice, but yet, she will not come back to read these!
I've talked to mothers who used street cannabis back in the 80's and had healthy babies, my friend Maria says she thinks her son is smarter because she used cannabis the whole time.
I'm a medicinal patient and was taking lithium post pregnancy, a tough medication to wean off of, (and yes that's my personal choice, the drs also said I may stay on a low dose of it if I'd like, I personally choose not to take the risk right now),
My thing is though I've been having bad nausea & loss of apetite, I'm not sure if the cannibus is enhancing the estrogen in my body and making me sicker or if it's just my body re-adjusting.
But I'm sure everyone will tell you, "NO IT'S A BAD DRUG DON'T USE IT," there were pregnant women in jail that were prescribed methadone for heroine withdrawl, and they had healthy babies so idk I think modern medicine is advancing,
Just do what feels right, if it's cannibus, you have my support I'm pro cannibus use during pregnancy.

Oh FFS. I think the point of the majority of posts on this thread is that researchers don't know if cannabis during pregnancy is safe, so the potential risk outweighs any benefits someone may use to justify continued use. You can get safe alternative medications from a doctor, so anyone who insists they need weed, really just doesn't want to stop even though they're pregnant. I like Motrin. I use Tylenol when pregnant. It's not rocket science.
Guys, this absolute rando who can’t spell heroin or cannabis says she supports “cannibus” use in pregnancy. So heck with what doctors and their stupid med schools say! They just want to harsh our mellows. #Buzzkills Listen to her instead!

I don't think there is room for judgement here - just simple respect for a new life that is growing inside you. I've never smoked, nor do i plan to. I would literally not sleep just knowing what damaging effect it could have on my baby. The only 'addictive' thing I gave up was my ice latte that I would have every day. My doctor told me I could/maybe miscarry and that was it for me. He told me one cup of coffee is okay, but I said to myslef forget it. Why risk your baby's health? What if the risks show when he/she is 10 or 12 years old? Cognitive issues, learning disabilities, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities - I'm just saying. Why risk it? Or what if the baby is unbelievably irritable and won't sleep and cries for HOURS? It can happen, maybe. There are other ways to relieve anxiety without drugs. Again, just the mere possibility of jepordizing baby's health is scary enough for me. Doctors don't know everything and science can be wrong sometimes. I would just stick with logic.
If it helps you, there's no scientific evidence I know of that says it harms fetuses and it has proven health benefits for adults so not sure if we'll ever see it. My stepson is a great kid and his mom smoked pot to ease her symptoms throughout her pregnancy. I live in California so I know a number of people who smoked during their pregnancies actually... All have healthy kids. I would suggest telling your doctor and getting their advice but otherwise, you do you!

If your stress and axiety are that bad then I suggest you seek therapy because it doesn't get any easier once the baby is here. I am not trying to judge, but you are a grown woman about to bring life into this world, so there is no point in sugar coating things. If you are OK with the possibility of your child not being healthy than keep smoking. If you want to do the responsible right thing than put the bong down and find healthy alternatives for you and your family. Excersice, talk to a doctor, or a therapist. I smoked too, but there is no way in hell am I going to put my babys health in jeopardy.
I cannot stand most of this thread. Women have a hard enough time in life being judged without being ridiculed for asking a question. As a Canadian who wrote a thesis about cannabis(including, but not limited to) its chemical formulation, its history, and its health benefits I am appalled at 90% of this feed. First and foremost for my American sisters out there, do yourself a favor and do the research(labs are easily accessible online for all to see). Do not believe everything posted in your news because a good amount of it is propaganda and lies. Canada is a very liberal country, a woman would NOT have your rights as a mother stripped for using THC as it is legal here and has been legal nationwide with a prescription for well over 10 years. Did you know the chemical make up of THC and CBA begins as THCA/CBDA both of which are not hallucinogenic and those chemicals only change after it has been heated to over 85-100 degrees CELCIUS! Meaning prior to this the herb you are all shunning which has been used for centuries by the aboriginals and a multitude of other nations is purely medicinal when not heated. Did you know you can transfer thc/cbd into oils and use it externally to help with muscle tenderness or that it can be steeped in tea to help with Chronic migraines, Epilepsy, insomnia, cancer and a multitude of other illnesses. Do I think she should be intaking THC/CBD through smoking, no. However there are plenty of safe and easy ways to dose herself while not harming her baby and the fact that not one single woman here thought of how stress and anxiety affect the body shocks me. A woman who is highly stressed during her first trimester is more likely to develop high blood pressure, premature delivery, delivery of underweight babies, and worst case (MISCARRIAGE). So explain to me how it's okay for you to intake a small amount of caffeine a day which is a well-known drug however you feel the right to shun this woman for using a natural method which causes her little to no side effects in order to be a functional health baby growing vessel.
As a woman who (DUE TO COVID) has run out of my THC/CBD oils which I use for chronic pain (due to being hit by a SUV) and has for the last two months been on medication from my doctor for my severe morning sickness. I can inform you that the intake of calories is next to impossible when the pain is so bad I cannot even keep Tylenol down long enough for it to be effective. MY DOCTOR recommended I return to using my THC/CBD oils in combination with the medication I have been given and we will judge if I can stop the medication all together as a pair. He is a DOCTOR and agrees this is the best solution for me and my baby. Please vaccinate your children people and stop spreading ignorance.
And better yet be kind to others. We are all doing our best for ourselves and our children and just because someone uses a different method of ideology does not give you the right to speak negatively towards them. The world is hard enough right now without that added insanity. Also little PSA western medicine has you delivering a baby on your back which is an archaic practice that came about due to King Louis XIV who liked to watch as his wives pushed out his spawn. This (Birthing position) was then adopted by western medicine at the beginning of the 18th century to make it easier for doctors to see what was happening. Meaning you are fighting gravity, denying your body the ease and ability to fully expand all because a MAN wanted to have an easier time. Enjoy your history lessons ladies and once again (DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH)

@lougirl3 Show me one study, just one true scientific study to show smoking weed *what the OP was inquiring about* doesn't harm baby. Not a thesis you supposedly wrote about the benefits of CBD oil - COMPLETELY MISSING THE TARGET!
I don't want to hear personal experiences, not non-scientific research, true hard core scientific study from accredidated research company that shows that smoking weed has NO ADVERSE AFFECTS IN A FETUS. I am not holding breath, as you will not find that study as its UNETHICAL.
As I said in my OP my friend smoked through hers and REGRETED it. Baby has health issues and his brother (no weed smoking) is perfectly healthy. Mom has guilt, whether coincidental or not. She knows she exposed her baby to weed while pregnant and holds that on he shoulders - whether is was the cause or not. No study will confirm or deny her feelings.
Also, you are under the advice of a doctor. OP isn't. She also is specifically asking about smoking, so everything you said about oils and heating, etc. is completely irrelevant.
Also, for the record, I don't consume caffeine. I'm not sure why you're assuming everyone who responded to this thread does? I also don't labor or deliver on my back (and I agree with you that it's a terrible birthing position). I'm not sure how either of those things is relevant to the question at hand.

*SNIP* cuz damn that's long
To the BOLDED: except... I did. I mentioned that there are doctor-approved, scientific, medically proven safe ways to treat anxiety and depression. I'm a mom who dealt with anxiety and depression through both of my pregnancies, and took medication that was deemed more helpful than harmful by my doctor. My medication "causes/d her (me) little to no side effects in order to be a functional health baby growing vessel."
@lougirl3 So I actually just wrote a paper on cannabis use and found several studies that confirmed potential negative impacts to neurodevelopment when Canabis is used during pregnancy. THC has been linked to the alteration of endogenous cannabinoid system that is necessary for hardwiring the brain. As a result children may be predisposed to psychiatric disorders many that have developmental etiology. As well as attention difficulties as they get older.
Same reason why adolescents using have found neurological brain changes when they have early onset of use including grey and white matter brain changes.
You may be using under the care of a dr but let’s not pretend there is no potential for risk in using while pregnant in others who are not.
All the data I just gave came from a 2019 study published in the Journal of Neuroscience. Many other studies in that resource also confirm what I shared. Let’s stop spreading false info that this is a safe no potential harm option.
Girl gone ahead and have that smoke. Appetite will come nausea will fade and sleep will be great. I did it with my first. He’s fine, he was a happy healthy baby now 7years old. Yup I said it
I smoked the first trimester of my first pregnancy because I could not eat without it. Also I’m on anxiety medication right now and my doctor told me it’s better to take something for anxiety or depression while pregnant then it is to suffer with the anxiety and depression as that stress is way way worse for you and the baby. So I’d take that as your good!
I’ve heard a lot of great things about women smoking to help w morning sickness as well. I don’t think smoking anything is necessarily healthy while pregnant but drs tell women to continue but cut back on cigs so why not. I’m an occasional weed smoker and I plan to continue to occasionally smoke if I feel like I really need/want to.

She quit weed after having him and before having her second. Her second had no health issues. To this day (12 years later, she still regrets it).
As she said, I don't know if the weed caused the issues of him, but I regret not giving him the best possible chance.
also - outside of health risks, you could be in legal trouble too (see link: https://www.babycenter.com/404_is-it-safe-to-use-marijuana-during-pregnancy_2490.bc)
"Is it illegal to use weed during pregnancy?
There can be legal risks to marijuana use. Marijuana is illegal under federal law. To find out about the state law where you live, check the Guttmacher Institute's summary of state policies.

Especially that you need to be honest with your doctor. Be honest about the drug use, and about the anxiety. Things don't get easier post-partum when the nights are long and sleepless and your hormones are haywire. A doctor can help you manage your anxiety and be the best mom for your baby.
I highly suggest that you be honest with your doctor so that you can find the best course possible for managing your pregnancy symptoms in conjunction with your anxiety & depression. They may recommend that you taper off the marijuana rather than simply quitting cold turkey, which sends your body into shock.

I believe in you. ❤️

Also, +1 to everything @harpseal135 said
