Re: Maternity clothes: the good, the bad, the ugly

  • @tara4910 code sent! If anyone else wants it just lmk. I have no idea when it expires but I’ve only had it for 2 weeks so it should still be good.

  • @roo_baby @BusinessWife Stitch Fix for maternity you say? I'm a previous user so probably SOL for referral discounts, but I hadn't thought about them for this season of life. Off I go...

On a friend's recommendation, I tried Le Tote last month but was really underwhelmed by their limited maternity selection. I was planning to cancel and maybe try RTR although significantly more expensive, but now I'm browsing and Le Tote seems to have a bunch of new available stuff. Anyone have experience with either, for maternity clothing specifically?
  • @BusinessWife @roo_baby I signed up and ordered stitch fix! Can’t wait for my items to come next week!

  • @RedBaramid I'm still doing okay in my normal clothes (15 weeks). Tight leggings bother me. But during the day I am busy enough that I don't think about it much, but as soon as I get home I change into comfy pants.
With my last pregnancy, I went a very long time before switching to maternity pants. I made due with larger or more stretchy leggings.
I think when you're uncomfortable, make the switch! You should feel good and not worry about feeling pressure on your stomache.
  • @RedBaramid I think 10/11 weeks was the last time I could comfortably wear my normal jeans and work pants without sizing or wearing something with an elastic waistband. The discomfort in the waist was my first reason for switching and now I just don’t fit in regular pants 😒

  • @RedBaramid Switch whenever you are uncomfortable... no use in not being comfortable.  I made the switch 11ish weeks full-time as I couldn't deal with my pants being tight even though it was all bloat.  The tightness made me more nauseous.  I have a few mat t-shirts I wear but mostly still regular tops.

  • I haven’t made the switch yet to maternity pants. I tried but the panel’s too loose and uncomfortable- I hate having to pull it up all the time. I’m making due with a Maeband (like a Belly band, but it just covers the belt buckle area so you can leave the button undone) and leggings. I’m also a SAHM, so I don’t have to worry about office wear. Last pregnancy, trying to find petite friendly maternity dress pants was a freaking nightmare! I’m going to try to skate by on buying as few maternity pieces as possible and just try to size up instead. Especially avoiding things like side-shirring tops that are hard to wear post pregnancy.
  • @RedBaramid I switched to maternity pants at around 14 weeks. I can still wear most of my prepregnancy tops and sweaters; it's helpful that the styles now are so baggy and forgiving!

Random question, but how many pairs of pants does everyone have? I bought two pairs of jeans and a pair of maternity pixie pants from Old Navy, but everything is so stretchy that I can really only get away with wearing them once before having to wash them. I was hoping I could wear the jeans 2x weekly like I do with my normal jeans, but that's not going to be possible now. I do work full time but my job is fairly casual since I go into people's homes and sit on the floor.
  • @wednesdaygirl1019 I have 2 pairs of maternity jeans and 2 pairs of maternity leggings. One pair of my maternity jeans I don’t love. I find them really thick. The other I do love but seem to be a bit too big so the slide down. I’m hoping they fit better soon because my regular jeans that still fit are starting to get uncomfortable. As soon I as I get home I switch into comfy pants. I’m planning on purchasing another pair of jeans and probably some shorts. I also dress casual for work mainly jeans, casual pants.

Has anyone bought anything from Pink Blush? I just discovered their website last night.
  • @wednesdaygirl1019
I have 1 pair of maternity jeans and 3 pairs of maternity dress pants I have to be business casual for work so its all full length dress pants here. I can get away with dresses and pencil skirts that are stretchy but its not as comfy as the pants! Since it'll be so hot when I have this one I plan to wait and just get a bunch of shorts instead of pants later on.
  • @charhar0820 Yeah, the maternity jeans tend to fall down on me too, but they're more comfortable than my regular jeans at this point. I have not ordered anything from Pink Blush but some of their stuff does look cute.

@mrswheeler812 My plan was to rock a bunch of dresses this spring and summer, since I prefer those to shorts and pants anyways, but it's still too cold in the northeast and I'm probably not going to be able to do that until May at this rate.
  • I moved into maternity clothes about 11ish weeks. I only have one pair of jeans as I almost never wear trousers. I've bought 5 dresses so far, 2 have arrived and I'm going to send one back and I have another 3 on the way. I don't really mind spending on maternity and nursing dresses as I nursed my son for over a year and I really did get my moneys worth out of the ones I bought during my last pregnancy.

    @wednesdaygirl1019
I've bought/have mainly short sleeved dresses, although at the minute I'm wearing them with thick tights and cardigans but that is my usual wardrobe. I even wear thermals under my dresses sometimes if it's freezing.
  • @RedBaramid I’ve been wearing maternity pants since week 12- so much more comfortable even though they tend to slide down when I’m walking. I bought two pairs of blue jeans and two pairs of black jeans. Also bought a pair of maternity leggings from old navy that I love and wear all weekend long.
  • @charhar0820, I have two dresses from there. One is a dressier dress and gorgeous. I love it. The other is a more casual knit dress. It's cute, but it's definitly standard low quality knit fare. You know, super thin, clings to every lump and bump, definitly have to wear a slip under it like most knits these days.

@wednesdaygirl1019, I have more maternity pants (that fit and I wear regularly) than I do non-maternity! All of them thrifteds, that's pretty much why. I have four pairs I like and wear frequently but only one pair of skinnies, so I actually want to get more. And then I have two pairs that are either really worn on the inner thigh or baggy and a bit big, so I only wear them around the house as junky pants now.
  • @charhar0820 I just received my first order from Pinkblush.  Unfortunately most of it is going back.  The dress I ordered the sizing was strange and two tank tops were labeled maternity but have zero stretch for a bump 🤷‍♀️ I'm keeping two tshirts that are just cute and loose and I think I can keep wearing after pg.

  • I can't remember if I ordered more than once from there or not @charhar0820 it might have just been the one - I needed a long black gown to sing in, and I found one!  It was pretty simple with just the lace detail at the top, but I can't say it felt the most flattering on.  A bit thin and cheap for what I would normally wear to an event like that.  But I wore it anyway because I figured it was basically fine, and I wasn't sure how much better-looking I was going to get, feeling is huge as I did at the time!  :s so far, I have had much better luck with Amazon for maternity dresses and cute blouses, tbh.
  • I remember pink blush running small and quality being meh, but the clothes look so good in pictures. The flowy dresses are more comfy than the tight ones, but the tight ones are 🔥
  • Yea, Pink Blush does run small.
  • Just a heads up I noticed that everything on GAP's site is 40% off and then you can take an additional 10% off that. I may buy a few things I've had my eyes on. Does anyone have any insight into how they run? I bought a few things off ASOS and I was swimming in them, so I'm sizing down with GAP but not sure if that's right or not.

Also, just a shout out to say I really love the tanks from Ingrid & Isabelle that Target sells. They are comfy, affordable, and b/c they don't have the ruching on the side I think they should work postpartum too.
  • @rivercitynik I'm just one person, but I feel like the gap stuff runs pretty true to size 🤷
  • @rivercitynik i find Gap runs pretty true to size, most of their sizing is based on what you would order pre pregnancy.
I just took advantage of their 40% + an extra 20% off everything sale. Including sale items! Plus shipping is free over $25!
  • @rivercitynik I've noticed that Gap has sales pretty regularly. I bought a few maternity pieces las time, the jeans fitted fine but the tops and the gym leggings in the S/M/L/XL sizing ran a little large.
  • hey guys, I hope this is the right place and this hasn’t been addressed elsewhere - feel free to point me in that direction if so.

I realized last night that it’s really time for a new bra. I’ve been wearing the same one that fits best for a couple weeks straight now, but it killed me when I took it off last night. I also reeeaaally hate buying clothes online without trying them on first, and even more the idea of doing it with a bra when I don’t even know how much bigger these guys are gonna get or what I’m going to like.

I know I could google a lot of this, and I have, but it’d be nice to hear from people who aren’t trying to sell me something. :) Any sizing advice, or favorite brands? On the lower end price-wise would be ideal since I’m out of work for the foreseeable future.
  • @viola_mama I would go ahead a get a comfy nursing bra or nursing tank that you can wear while pregnant. I really love Hofish nursing tanks and their bras. They have good support and the quality is awesome. My nursing tanks are from ds1's pregnancy and nursing journey, and they still look brand new. I got them off amazon.

  • @wildrainbow Thanks! Do they stretch with you if you end up different sizes throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding? Mostly I’m worried about buying something and it not fitting in two months or ever again.

@viola_mama I’d second getting the nursing bra. They definitely stretch and aren’t cup shaped. But only if you’re planning to nurse. I plan to but mine were full coverage and come up kind on high.
So I bought some lace bralettes. I’m smaller. Normal b and now a c. They’re supportive enough for daily wear and can definitely grow with you.
The specific ones I bought are no longer available but this is what they were. Cost me about $20-25 for all 5

  • @viola_mama I just had to size up for the second time and I found a nursing bra at Target that I really like.

I feel like I have room to grow, but if I do need to size up again it was relatively affordable (as far as bras go) so it wouldn't be so painful. Pre-pregnancy I was a small band/large cup but was able to get away with bralettes and then suddenly things were so saggy...might have had a cry or two about it 😭 this bra gives me lift but is soo comfy I could wear it all day.
  • thanks guys! I’m normally a D so hoping for as much support as one can get without any wire. I know I shouldn’t hold my breath though, haha.
  • @viola_mama I am a G and I have to wear a nursing bra and nursing tank out in public. I will say the Hofish tanks support me well enough at home that I can wear them without a bra. I have not noticed any major stretching, and my tanks are almost 2 yrs old of constant use. I dont dry them in the dryer, which has helped them maintain their structural integrity. I'm trying the bras for the first time this go round, and I have to say I like them a lot.
  • Does anyone have experience with Hatch maternity? Their clothes are so pretty and also unspeakably expensive, but they have a 20% sale going on and I'm tempted to buy a dress in case I ever go out in public again 😂. I like the idea that you can wear the clothes after baby comes, but I'm a little skeptical that they would fit well afterwards.

I've never bought from there. I think it depends on your style. Personally, I don't think I'd ever wear any of the styles on their site postpartum. I get out of maternity clothes as soon as possible after having a baby. (I also haaaate combo maternity/nursing clothes.) In my experience, anything that's maternity-styled, like high waists and loose and flowy, is unflattering and just makes me still look pregnant, especially because my stomach isn't perfectly flat at the best of times!
  • @rivercitynik Wow Hatch is expensive! If you would wear that style of dress always (I definitely couldn’t get away with them, they would look like a tent on me) then I think they would work fine for both as they don't seem to have a lot of extra fabric at the front.

I personally didn’t mind wearing the combo maternity and nursing dresses that I got with DS and wore them for the best part of a year when nursing and I have bought more this time. One thing to bear in mind is that I have an hourglass shape with a large bust and all the dresses I have a very defined waist which helps them not look too baggy afterwards. I also try to get away with the smallest size possible for my maternity clothes. I got a couple of dresses that were bigger with DS and they looked like a sack until I was about 38w.

  • Has anyone found any comfy ankle length/long black maternity tights?! I lived in these (at home) during my last two pregnancies but they didn’t survive beyond that. I think I got rid of 3 horribly pilled pairs after my last pregnancy (we weren’t sure if we were having more kids). Now I can’t find any?! I always had luck at Old Navy but they don’t have any plain black long ones. Only Capri length. Ugh. I’ve never purchased them from anywhere else so if you have some from anywhere other than Old Navy and they were reasonably priced and comfy and don’t slip/ride down, please let me know!
  • @laur84ns have you tried looking on the gap website? H&M has some too. I can’t vouch for either but I have recently seen some on their websites. On whim awhile I go I found high waisted leggings at Joe Fresh on sale, which are super comfy but literally go up to just under my boobs (back included) lol. I don’t mind it tho! I did try a pair of maternity leggings from Walmart and much to my surprise, they are comfortable, the back panel is scooped and the belly panel hugs nicely and doesn’t slip.
If you’re open to splurging quite a bit more then the budget ones I suggested, a lot of women swear by the Align pant made by lululemon. They say they stick to their pre-pregnancy size and have no trouble with them. So you could wear them post pregnancy as well. They’re like a second skin, so soft and comfy! They just came out with a “super high waisted” legging too.
