COVID/Coronavirus Thread

Worried about Coronavirus? In a heavily affected area? Other related questions? I thought we'd make a thread to help us air any fears or reassurances!

I'm in the #2 area in the country for Coronavirus (my DH actually came home from China 24 hours before the virus hit Hong Kong in January, but he's okay!). I'm not personally worried about my own health if I get exposed, but I'm worried about the medical system getting way too overtaxed, which could spill over into difficulty getting care for people like pregnant women! I also feel for those who are working in industries that can't go remote, or can't just take PTO when they're sick.

If you're worried or have any comments, ideas, or word from your dr., post here!

Re: COVID/Coronavirus Thread

  • We opted against a “big” Spring Break vacation sadly, just because I didn’t want to chance having to go into quarantine or something. Our daughter also has asthma so I’m always extra nervous for her with things like this and Influenza. Everything seems to hit her harder.

All this to say, we would still really love to do SOMETHING over break— is it too risky to head to a large indoor water park for a night or two? I know that really we are taking a chance anywhere..  If it matters we are extremely cautious about germs in general and wash well even when it’s not a bad time of year.  Thoughts?

  • We're in an area that's supposedly at low risk for it, but hubby and I still decided to stock up. It hits people with low immune systems the worst, and since being pregnant lowers your immune system, it makes me a bit nervous.

  • So far in SC I don’t think there have been any cases. But we might be moving to Oregon before the baby is born which is sandwiched between two states with a lot so I’m kind of nervous about that. I’m just washing my hands before eating and I wash my hands a ton at work anyway (food service) so I’m not too worried. And when I’ve been taking money/cards I wear gloves.  I have a pretty good immune system. So far haven’t been sick this season but sometimes I wake up with a sore throat. I wanted to fly to NJ in the next couple of months to visit family so Idk if I will depending on how things are going.
  • I am not overly worried for me or the kids at this point. We are not in a overly populated area, but both work at a University. I am following along closely and have concerns for older family members.

@chasingroygbiv I would say go for it, but I might be a bit less cautious. We just flew to Florida and back for a week and it included going to populated places (aquarium and large shopping districts).

  • Apparently the virus is not heat resistant and dies quite readily at above 26*c (about 80 F). Use that info as you will

  • I've been looking at the stats of how low the incidence rate is in children and that there have been zero fatalities in kids under 10, but I'm still a little nervous because DD had bronchiolitis at 5 weeks which has put her at higher risk for getting it again (and she's had it 3 times since then including just now getting over it). I know COVID-19 isn't the exact same as bronchiolitis but just wonder if one puts her at higher risk of the other if she winds up exposed. Now that its in our home county, I need to call her pediatrician and see what her thoughts are on the matter.

We are supposed to fly to the north east for Easter to see family but I'm beginning to wonder if we ought to change plans. And if not for me and DD, then for family like my 92 year old grandma. I would not want to be the carrier that gave her COVID-19!
  • @corngirl The stats for kids have been given me positive vibes as well. I keep following and they seem to be having the best recovery overall. I would be worried about grandma too. I am generally concerned this could wipe out nursing homes or elderly communities.

  • Live in Oklahoma, as far as I know there's been a case confirmed in Tulsa, one in Edmond, and two people that travelled recently that live in Norman are refusing quarantine, so I'm a bit nervous because I work in OKC.

I know the only people dying from it have underlying conditions so far, but I'm just nervous because we don't know stats on pregnant people. What if a pregnant person got it? If they fought it off, would the child be okay? Could they fight it off but lose the child? I don't want to give in to the hype and panic, but at the same time I don't want anything to happen to the bean either...
  • @raesky1111 I think it's good that you're considering the risks and being cautious. I also don't want to go into panic mode, but it would be harder living in the US I think with still so many unknowns.

Where I live, there are mandatory 14-day  quarantines for citizens travelling back from high risk countries, and non-citizens from those countries are currently barred from entering. I think if I wasn't pregnant I would probably find it all a bit kooky, but since I am preg, it actually gives me peace of mind.
  • @raesky1111 I also have the same questions/concerns. I wish we knew more.
  • Basically there is just not enough data on pregnant women with Covid-19, but you may still be interested to read.

  • I’ve been told by talking with 4 different doctors, that Coronavirus is no more dangerous for pregnant women. We are traveling to the UK in April. I asked my Ob gyn today and she said just wipe down the airplane seat area with Lysol wipes, but she’s not concerned with me going at this point.
  • The number of cases keeps growing here and there are 3 in the county I live in.  I wasn't really worried but it is pretty close so that does increase the anxiety a little.  I work with mental health clients and spend a lot of time talking about it which also I think increases the awareness and maybe makes me a little more anxious.  Weirdly enough my husband is immune compromised (is on immunosuppressants) so he probably should be most concerned and he doesn't seem to be bothered.
  • I hope it gets less prevalent once we hit the summer. I feel like I will be very nervous once this baby is born because there’s a slight chance they can have CF and that will make me freak out about germs especially respiratory illnesses. So that’s basically my #1 worry right now.
  • Since we're in a county with a big cluster (including some deaths), both I and DH have now been told to work from home. I guess now it's just about not going crazy indoors lol.

  • We got our first case in the province yesterday, and it's in my city... They haven't reported it yet but DHs coworkers girlfriend is the nurse who admitted the patient. I'm nervous because we're not a large city by any stretch of the imagination. DH has told me to stay home except for work, and to keep DS home.

  • Welp, it has started in my state. Now the universities here are starting to switch to remote only courses including my alma mater. H and I both work for a university. This might get wild soon.

  • It's quite bad near us now, DH doesn't want me going out if possible, even having groceries delivered.  I'm still not feeling all that great and the weather is still bad, but once those both improve it's not going to be easy....
  • It’s just a couple of cities away from me now. :( The schools here are preparing. They’ve gone over proper hand washing and have signs all over the schools. We also got an e-mail that for now things are on as normal, but they are in contact with the dept of health and will keep us up to date on any changes that may occur.. ugh. Nervous because my husband’s company can be difficult when it comes to shutting things down (which I understand, it’s NOT easy, but when it comes to life or death it seems like an easier move to make).... The problem is I honestly believe it’s in far more cities and states than anyone realizes. People just started becoming more aware of symptoms and oftentimes people brush off Strep, Influenza, pneumonia, etc. so why all of a sudden will everyone stay home when they’re unwell? You’ll always have those people that just won’t obey. Or they’ll send their kids sick but with Motrin on board..

Our schools did mention going into Spring Break should help. Ha! Yeah for that week! Then everyone is going to come back from traveling or visiting with family/friends, etc and then what?

I wasn’t nervous before, but I am now because it seems we simply just don’t know enough and it’s spreading fast. With influenza, we know how it works. We know (kind of) what we can expect, who’s at greater risk, when to stay home and when to head to the hospital..... on and on...
  • My work has started cancelling events we had scheduled. I wasn’t worried before, but now I’m wondering if it’s being blown out of proportion or if it really is some major pandemic. I’m not sure I guess since I don’t know much about it.

My midwife didn’t seem worried at all at my appointment today. It’s officially in SC now as well. This baby will most likely be born in Oregon though (unless our plans change) so I really hope it gets under control soon. At least by September! My job would probably only close if everyone was sick. But we have a very strict not working while sick policy and I just hope customers don’t bring it in. H and I have no way to work from home!

Same here. We are in SoCal and DH works for the local school district and they are already being told to be prepared to teach remotely...
  • @Louise_Belcher my university just sent an email saying we’d be all online by the end of March. I’m taking all online classes anyway so it doesn’t affect me but that’s pretty crazy.
  • My moms boss tested positive today for it! Getting crazy around here !
  • @angbaby83 The email came tonight. Starting Monday and through April 15th all classes are moving online at our university. Staff and admin are still reporting as usual so at this point it doesn’t effect me, but H is scrambling to figure out how to have a therapy skills course that involved mock therapy move online. I feel for all these professors, adjuncts, and teachers that are trying to figure out what on earth to do.

  • It's here in Pennsylvania, but only in the eastern part which is understandable since that is where most of the state's population is located. I know it's only matter of time before we have cases here.

I went shopping to the grocery store and Costco to get some non-perishable stuff. I'm not to worried about DH or I getting it, but if we are unable to leave the house for a bit because of a more wide spread issue we'll at least have food for that time.

Most of the colleges and universities have gone to online classes through spring break. I'm wondering if DH will have to work remotely from home soon. He works for a company that does work for Pitt athletics department. I wonder if work will be postponed. He takes public transport most days which worries me a little once they find cases here.

Louise, have you tried suggesting to your husband having those mock therapy classes over videochat? There's plenty of platforms where it should be stable (hopefully able to support the mass amounts of traffic I imagine will hit as more places resort to virtual work meetings and such).

As for myself, I'm going to talk to my doctor tomorrow about Corona and see what she thinks, maybe come up with a plan of action for if I do get sick. I'll pass along any useful information!
  • @raesky1111 That was his initial hope, but unfortunately a number of the students would not have a private setting with internet where they would feel comfortable having therapy conversations. :/  So it is likely they will be watching a lot of therapy videos instead. Which is a bummer because many students get a lot out of the mock session. This whole thing is a cluster, but we are glad the university made the choice it did.

I think we have decided to keep our preschooler home through the end of the month. It is just preschool and he only goes in the morning 4 days a week so I think we may try to just play it safe.

  • A local daycare is closing because a kid has a probable case. I foresee more daycares following suit. I know a lot of parents are already making the choice to keep their kids home.
We're lucky in that our government is working on figuring out how to financially support the people who can't work for whatever reason during this.

  • Saw these points brought up on Insta and it made me think a lot.
i really can’t imagine how hard it’s going to be for some people...
-parents who rely on daycares/schools for childcare so they can work
-children who rely on school food for a good chunk of their nutrition/meals
-Those of us who have limited sick time/pto or none at all who won’t be able to pay bills if they can’t work.

This is one of those moments when I really wish we had a significant emergency fund 😭
  • My state (MI) just closed k-12 until April 6th. We will be okay, but this is going to be extremely hard on so many families.

  • several school districts here are closing for extended spring break.  It will definitely be hard on families. My daughter goes to an in home daycare but our provider often closes if schools are closed.  I am definitely worried she is going to close :(  She is on vacation right now so we will see come Monday what she does.
  • @greyl re: food for kids, I was watching the news today and the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District said that they are working on plan to offer prepackaged breakfasts and lunches to kids in the event of a school shut down. He said 80% of their kids are on free or reduced meals. I would hope other schools would do the same. But I could see districts with much smaller percentages of kids on free lunch that would not be so inclined to do so. I think our school district would do something similar as we also have a large percentage of lower income students. Our district already has a program for free lunch to all kids during the summer.

  • In Michigan also and I didn’t even think the impact of not having school lunches! Hope they have a plan. I’m glad they are being proactive about this.

On a side note: what are your doctors saying? I plan to ask at my next appointment but I’m wondering what you all are hearing. I’m just nervous of the effect on my unborn son.
  • We are still in session and it sounds like our state is going to hold out as long as absolutely possible (until we have large clusters, they say, because kids fair well). Not sure how I feel about this because well..: adults make up the school population, too— duh?!!

Anyway, I’m hoping it doesn’t get bad as we would have to make the time up putting us in school until July. One of our schools does not have A/C and it’s a pre-school. Ugh!

I do worry about lunches if our schools do close. Soooo many of the kids in our district are on free/reduced lunches and some are in the backpack club (taking a meal/snack home).

I hope whatever is decided, it’s what’s best...
  • It’s getting pretty real where I am at! Schools as well as community centers (such as YMCA)and events are being closed and cancelled in my County. Local retail stores are even advised to close. My DH got us drive through chickfila for dinner last night and only the drive through is open now. It feels kind of surreal as we don’t personally know anyone who has it yet but it feels like a slow moving tornado is on its way 😬 I really hope my husband’s company decides to let office people work from home starting next week- he works with tons of people. We’re trying to limit exposure as much as we can but that’s a big source of exposure and we kinda need my DH to keep his job 😂 also have to go to a local hospital today for an ultrasound of my legs (been having some cramping pains in them and my OB wants to make sure I don’t have a clot🤦🏻‍♀️) obviously that’s important just not loving going to a hospital with this craziness going on! Definitely going to touch as little as possible lol
  • @robyn2201 I’m so glad to hear that!! Just one less thing parents have to worry about thankfully. I do hope other districts do that as well!

@ktholysz my midwife was not worried at all. But again she said we don’t have a lot of info yet. The main worries for illnesses are high fevers and it passing through the placenta. Which as of right now Coronavirus doesn’t supposedly cause high fevers and hasn’t had evidence of crossing to the fetus, but I also only have 12 cases in my state so far.
  • I asked my midwife and she said they obviously don't know all the affects it could have on pregnant ladies or the unborn babies, but in the few cases there have been, even if the mom has the virus the baby has tested negative, and there's no trace of the virus in amniotic fluid or breast milk.  Since it also seems to be affecting those older rather than children or pregnant or those with low immunity, she said to take as much precaution as my husband or anyone else my age, and just keep washing my hands.  Hard to know, but regardless I've been staying home as much as possible and being very careful what I touch when I go out.
  • It’s crazy town in Houston.  You’d think we were having another hurricane with all the hoarding at the grocery stores.  I’m currently on day 8 of battling a nasty sinus infection thanks to the high pollen content— Schools cancelled next week (on Spring Break right now) so I decided to potty train my second kiddo right now while we aren’t going anywhere for awhile!
  • I think all of the constant coverage about how crazy the stores are is freaking me out more than the actual virus itself personally. I don’t have the ability to buy weeks worth of groceries right now so I’m just hoping people chill out soon so they can restock eventually.
