@laur84ns as others have said definitely let your doc know what’s going on. They may fit you in earlier to give you peace of mind. And I think everyone is a little different in terms of telling people....so do what makes you feel comfortable. I just wanted to let you know I’ve had a lot of spotting and bleeding with both of my pregnancies. My first I spotted every day from 6 wks until 20wks-ish. I had one episode of bright red blood at 15 wks as well. Everrything turned out ok. They never found out why. This current pregnancy I had a large amount bright red blood And clots at 7 weeks that turned out to be a subchorionic hemorrhage and have spotted on and off ever since. It never gets easier and it really messes with your emotions, but at this point I just remind myself to never panic. The most likely scenario is that everything is fine with spotting. It is very common especially early on. Worrying won’t change anything. Try to distract yourself and Just do everything you can to take care of yourself. You have no control over the future, but you can choose to love this baby and celebrate him or her today. Hang in there. Hoping the spotting stops soon but try to remain calm even if it continues. Sending creepy internet hugs ❤️
Well after my ultrasound appointment yesterday I've had some spotting today for the first time this pregnancy. So my nerves are currently shot with having had a previous loss. I managed to get to the GP thisafternoon and I they have got me an appointment for annother scan but it's not until Saturday morning. To make matters worse my husband is supposed to be going away this weekend, leaving me with our toddler to lookafter.
@cornichonmam I am so sorry to hear this news. If you don't mind me asking, was it just an abdominal scan or an internal one? I wonder, if it was internal, perhaps that might've created some irritation.
Do you have a friend or family that can help watch your toddler just in case?
@cornichonmam Ugh, I’m sorry you’re in the same stressful situation as I am. That’s good that you can get in for another scan on Saturday though. I’ll tell you what I’ve been telling myself all day since my spotting started: you’ve seen a baby with a healthy heartbeat on a scan so chances are that everything is fine! I believe the odds are much higher that it’s random spotting from cervical changes, hormonal changes, increased blood flow to your uterus, an irritated cervix, or some other random first trimester cause for spotting, than for it to be a miscarriage. I can’t remember how far along you are but chances of a miscarriage at this point (after seeing a heartbeat) are really quite low! I totally understand the stress though. I’ve had a lot of spotting episodes this pregnancy and a particularly startling one today so my nerves are shot too. I’ve also had a previous loss and am just terrified of this spotting. Ugh. Sending hugs!
Well I went to the dr today. He says it’s not great that I’m spotting, obviously, but that he’d be more concerned if I was cramping too. He is going to try to get me in for an ultrasound at our local hospital in the next few days. I really hope he follows through (sometimes his “promises” don’t materialize ... after he talks to specialists etc he sometimes comes back and says oh never mind, that test / procedure isn’t necessary). I should hear from him tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
@laur84ns I’m sorry that you did not get the response that you wanted. Was this your GP that you saw? I’m surprised that they could not just give you an ultrasound right there. I would follow up with him mid morning to make sure he did what he said he was going to do.
Also, have you tried looking into another doctor? It doesn’t seem like he has good office manners. I switched doctors mid pregnancy last time because of that. I feel like he should have reassured you more knowing the reason why you came in. I feel like during pregnancy doctors should know our fears and know when to express concern when it’s needed and reassure us when there is no real concern. But the fact that he didn’t send you for an ultrasound right away must mean that things are fine and he just wants to take a peak to see if anything is causing the bleeding. Like some of the women have said, the bleed during their pregnancies and they have perfectly healthy children.

@blackgirlmagic I’m in Canada so things work a bit differently from what I read from you gals in the US. Our healthcare is “free” but in my province anyway, I’m lucky to have a family dr at all! There are waitlists years long because we have a dr shortage. So I’ll see my family dr until 28 weeks pregnant and then I’ll be referred to either an OB or a family dr that delivers babies (mine does not). So definitely no ultrasound equipment at his office! My appointment was also in the evening which is why he said he’d call the local hospital to see if they can get me in for a scan, this morning. He knew the radiologist he knows wouldn’t be in until 9am this morning. So... I wait! He definitely seemed to think there isn’t much that we can do but hope for the best, which I understand, but I insisted that I was really stressed out and that an ultrasound would help alleviate my stress. So hopefully he’s able to convince the radiologist he knows to get me in. I have to admit around here, a woman like myself with first trimester spotting isn’t exactly a priority/emergency at a hospital where they do other ultrasounds to diagnose people will serious illnesses. It sounds like a lot of Bumpers in the US are already seeing drs who specialize in pregnancy or who have ultrasound equipment in their offices. That’s just not the case for me. My “issues” will be compared at the hospital with other people who perhaps have more serious, pressing ailments so we’ll see if they can squeeze me in!! Once I get passed 24 weeks I can deal directly with our women/children’s/maternity hospital where they have hotlines and day units specifically to see and answer questions from pregnant women, but that doesn’t apply in the first trimester (or else I imagine they’d be totally overrun with people like me who freak out at exes little spot!). Anyway that’s the deal here. I was actually pleased he even said he’d try to get me an ultrasound to be honest... and if he can’t I’m totally going somewhere to get a private scan before the weekend. My heart just can’t take any more uncertainty!
@laur84ns I did not know that about the Canadian OB services. In the States we see an OB/midwife from the start. As long as you are happy with the care that he gives you then that's all that matters. Hopefully get can work in a favor for you, but I was going to suggest going somewhere private if they can't get you in by this weekend. Hopefully you can see your little baby soon!

@laur84ns Wow. That's a lot of insightful information regarding the Canadian healthcare policy during pregnancy. It makes more sense why you couldn't be given an ultrasound on the spot with a little bit of background. I'm so sorry that your family doctor didn't have more encouraging words for you. I'm sure you're even more stressed out now. Keep us posted on your news today, and I will continue keep you in my thoughts.
@laur84ns I didn't know much about Canada healthcare before your comment. When I was pregnant last time in the UK, I only saw an ultrasound machine at the hospital and only when something was concerning. There was a line out of the door for this service, which is why I opted to pay for a private ultrasound out of pocket in the UK. Are there private services available to you? Sometimes when there's national healthcare, private care costs are not quite as high as you think. Healthcare in the US is expensive; I was once charged $18 for a survey in the US that I filled out about myself!
@radiohd18 Ha! I’m giggling at the fact you were charged to fill out a survey! WTH?! Yes there are UC Baby locations around my city, so private boutique style places that will give you a peek at your baby, a photo, tell you the sex if you want to know, etc. I did go to one of those places a week ago and thought that’d be good to get me through the first trimester anxiety but then this stupid spotting started so... ugh. Don’t want to be a crazy person and keep using these private services but I do believe ultimately that the 5 mins of ultrasound is less harmful than weeks of stress and anxiety!
@lachnessmomster@blackgirlmagic Thank you! Yes, our system is good because we don’t pay for services but obviously they have to triage resources so those with immediate needs come first! I’ve heard if you have a heart attack or a serious illness your care is usually amazing, but if you have a less immediate issue (ie need a knee replacement) you could wait a year or two for care. In the case of first trimester spotting where there’s really nothing medically that can (usually) be done.... no one’s rushing to offer an immediate US! Unless you go to the ER and are willing to spend all day there (which I did at 6 weeks when I had some bright spotting just a day after finding out I was pregnant) or go to a private place (which is really meant for a “fun look at baby” rather than to determine if your pregnancy is still ongoing, but hey an ultrasound is an ultrasound right?!)
Anyway, I’m going to stick by my phone today and hope the dr calls with an ultrasound appointment soon, or else I’ll likely be calling every UC Baby in the city begging someone to get me in this week. I swear I’m normally a very sane, calm, rational person - but PGAL brain and just general first trimester anxiety have always rendered me a bit of a crazy person for the first few months! :
So I had a bit more spotting in the evening but it seems to have stopped today. So hopfully it's just one of the many things that can cause bleeding that isn't too serious. I got to speak to a midwife today and she said that bleeding in pregnancy is not uncommon but it's not normal so they will want to check whats going on and to try and get as much rest as I can in the mean time.
@laur84ns I'm sorry your in the same sh*tty situation too. I've been trying to think the same, I'm 12+6 now we've seen the baby twice (once was private) but more importatntly we saw the baby the day before and the ultrasound tech didn't think there were any problems.
@radiohd18 Unfortunatly it's unlikely to be from the ultrasound as I had an over the tummy scan. I'm going to get Grandmar to look after DS on Saturday and I've got a freind to come with me to the appointment. It depends on what happnes in the next few days, if I have more spotting my husband is going to cancle his trip.
Thanks for all the support. Hopefully it's nothing serious and just baby doing what children do, causing us no end of stress and worry.
@cornichonmam I’ll be thinking of you over the next few days! Know that I’m stressing right along with you Let’s both keep calm and try to get plenty of rest (so tough with other young kiddos though)....
Hi mama I'm Canadian too and I'm lucky to have a great dr doppler and all but my girlfriend wasn't as lucky and opted to get a midwife instead of an OB for this reason..the midwife saw her right away and all through the pregnancy and anytime she felt nervous. No waiting to 28 weeks. May be something to consider if you don't love your doc as you have a long time to go! I get how hard it is to get a new one.
@meagang123 Hey!! Whereabouts are you? Ontario by any chance? I moved from ON to NS a few years ago and have to say, healthcare is suffering here! There are only 3 midwives for the area of the province I’m in so to get on with the midwives you have to call them and get on the waitlist the second you get a positive test. No joke. Even then there are no guarantees you’ll get to go with the midwives. It’s a bit crazy. I am on the waitlist so we’ll see! If I don’t hear from them I’m going to ask to be referred to a family dr here who delivers babies and has a great reputation. My dr is a great guy, don’t get me wrong, but he’s well into his 70s and has taken on too many clients so sometimes my requests or his promises get forgotten about. He does have a Doppler (allegedly) but says he doesn’t even attempt to use it until 14-15 weeks because the heartbeat is too hard to find before that.
Hahah I am in ON! I am frequently in NB I love the east coast. The wait lists are long here too but not THAT crazy. Sorry to hear that but good plan anyways!
@laur84ns the spotting did stop, last time was just after 10 weeks and now I am a few days shy of 14 weeks...2nd trimester here I come. Hoping for the same for you!
@blackgirlmagic I haven’t heard anything yet. And the office is closed today (it’s his paperwork day) so I tried to call but it goes straight to voicemail. This is par for the course with my dr, I’ll sit by the phone all day and not hear from him. Then he’ll either call at like 10pm (he works around the clock!) or like Friday morning with an appointment for Friday afternoon. That’s just how he rolls unfortunately. I’ve contacted a local UC Baby private clinic to see if they can squeeze me in on Friday in case I don’t hear from him.
@jspeed83 Ok, thats good to know. That’s my big hope, that this is all just hormonal stuff and that once the placenta takes over fully the spotting will stop. With my other two pregnancies I didn’t have any spotting after the first trimester, so fingers crossed! I’d love to put all this first tri spotting stuff behind me and finally enjoy this pregnancy!
Good news at the appointment today. Baby is fine, there isn't anything they can see wrong with the placenta so they think the bleeding was most likely caused by cervical changes. If I'm still having spotting in 10 days time I need to ring them back and they will rescan me. I'm so relived, I feel like I can breath for the fist time in days.
@laur84ns I hope you can get in for and appointment and get your peace of mind back soon.
@cornichonmam WHEW!!! I am so happy to hear your news!!! I also have a scan today, early afternoon. Really hoping for the same good news as you. Send me some of your good luck vibes please Will update after!
ETA: I didn’t hear back from my dr Wed or Thurs so I gave up on him and booked a private 5 min scan for this afternoon (we were/are planning on telling family tonight). Then the dr called on Friday and said he got me in at the hospital for Tues afternoon! Whoops! Although I take US exposure seriously and don’t want to be irresponsible with my use of them and overuse them, after a lot of thought my DH and I decided I’ll still go to my appointment today and tell them I literally want 2 mins of US - just enough to check the heartbeat and measurement of baby and get a pic. Then on Tuesday I’ll have a true medical scan where they will presumably be looking at my placenta or any other reasons for the spotting. So today will tell if baby is still on track and Tues will tell if there’s any noticeable reason for my spotting. Fingers crossed for both appointments!
@laur84ns my doctor said there is no real risk from US, so I wouldn’t stress about 2 in a week. The bigger risk is likely from Doppler, but studies on that are mixed. I hope your appointment today goes well and you are able to see as much as you need for peace of mind.
Sorry to take so long to update! It was a busy day. I’m elated to say that my US went great - baby is measuring a couple days ahead, nice strong heartbeat, and was doing yoga in there and moving all around Thanks for the positive thoughts today @lachnessmomster@blackgirlmagic@roo_baby@tyrion_ (and anyone else who sent positive vibes!!)
@roo_baby Thanks for sharing that, I was a bit nervous about two US in a week even though I have never seen any research showing it’s harmful. The lady took her time today though, snapping pics, so it wasn’t as quick / less exposure as I was hoping. Oh well. I’m sure it will be fine. I feel SO MUCH better knowing baby still looks great .... I might actually be able to relax now (haha we’ll see).
@blackgirlmagic Haha it won’t be in there... won’t even be able to share it on the randoms thread because although I’ve been on the bump for a couple years I’ve never attempted to upload a pic! If you can believe it. Hell, I don’t even know how to add a profile pic!!! I can’t figure it out
@laur84ns that is great news!! I hope that you enjoy your birthday dinner tonight! If you are mobile adding a picture is so easy. Just select the mountain picture, the last option to the right, select choose file, and that’s basically it. But there is also no need to upload if you don’t want to 😊

@lachnessmomster Ah!! I’m sorry! As soon as I got home the baby needed to be put down for a nap and then my disaster of a house needed to be cleaned and then people arrived! Crazy day! So cruel of me to leave people hanging!
@blackgirlmagic Ok, I am going to try to upload the pic here for all of you awesome gals who have been cheering me and this baby on over the last week or so!
ETA: OMG that was so easy! I am embarrassed that I’ve never tried until now. I so wanted to share in HDBD with my March 2019 moms when I was pregnant last time but had a mental block about trying to upload a photo. *facepalm* Hope I don’t get in trouble for putting this in the “wrong” thread
