Due Week 4: Role Call, Chatter, GTKY etc.

Re: Due Week 4: Role Call, Chatter, GTKY etc.

  • GTKY: What kind of work do you / your partner do?

I'm an RN and clinical coordinator of a large inner-city hemodialysis unit, I'm responsible for outcomes and metrics for about 150 patients as well as training all newly hired nurses. My work typically comes with very early mornings and long hours. I roll out of bed at 3:30 am to get the day started, which has been so difficult lately.

My husband is a journeyman HVAC mechanic, he visits houses and fixes problems with people's furnaces or air conditioners. He has a 2 hour drive each way to work, and is usually gone 50+ hours a week. I miss him a lot during the week, but we generally get to spend most weekends together.

  • @ziggymama06 I'm so jealous of your job - I find all the financial planning/personal finance stuff endlessly fascinating and the voyeuristic parts of my personality would love getting that very unique window into other people's financial lives (plus, you know, helping them and stuff ;) ).

I do feel like I've let my financial house get a little out of order since having a kid. A lot is on auto pilot so that's fine, but I just haven't been paying attention like I used to and am sure I need some course correction. Maybe on the other side of mat leave I can hire you to help out.
  • @fitandnerdy The funny thing is, I studied math/economics in college and was just telling someone at lunch today how I sort of wish I'd decided to get my PhD instead of going to law school. I'm happy with how my life and career have turned out, but I feel like I sort of chickened out of the whole grad school application process and went with the safer bet. Your particular field of study seems really interesting and meaningful.
  • @emiliadkay It certainly is fascinating to see into other people's lives, financially and personally.  One of my favorite parts is building out the financial plans as there are so many details involved and sometimes can be like a puzzle to make sure I have all the information needed.

You are so sweet.  I'd be happy to work with you and help you "get your house in order".  It's so common to go on auto pilot and remain there for years and years.

FWIW I do not think you chickened out.  Law school is so intimidating!!  When I was younger I always wanted to be a lawyer because I enjoyed arguing with people to prove my point haha!  But I didn't want to do all that schooling!!  I didn't realize how much was entailed in becoming a CFP though, but whatever.  Everything happens for a reason, right....

  • Hey! I’m Laura, a Canadian mama and I’m due with my 3rd on August 31st.
Just wanted to introduce myself and get on the list!
I’m going to go back and catch up on what I’ve missed with the week 4 ladies and plan to check in here often
  • So we might be making a crazy life change in the next couple months.  Hubs decided to apply for a permanent position at the company that he has been doing consulting work with through his current job.  One of his (now former) coworkers just got a job there and they have another position open.  He talked to the manager for that position and she was really glad he was applying for it.  Are we totally insane for considering moving states while pregnant?!?

  • @marfi236 That is exciting!! I think if it is a good move for you and your family then you should go for it! It could be so nice to bring a new baby home to a new house. A nice fresh start. You wouldn't want your husband to miss out on a great opportunity.
  • @marfi236 Great news!!  If you feel it is a good move for you and your family and your husband is excited about the job opportunity, then I say go for it!  We are hoping to buy a fixer upper shortly and move so I don't see why you can't/shouldn't.  The actual process of moving sucks whether it's two towns over or out of state.  Good luck!

  • @riatortillaxo It'll be an insanely good opportunity (pay would be more than the combination of both of our salaries right now).  The only hard part is my family all lives within 10-15 minutes of us.  The move would mean we would live almost 4 hours away (not too far, we could still visit fairly regularly but still far seeing as we see them multiple times a week right now).  But I don't know if that would stop us from moving if my husband gets an offer, the money would just be too good to pass us (especially since he's not sure if he's gonna have his current job after his boss retires since he's the one who gets all the contracts right now).

@ziggymama06 funnily enough, we moved to the current house we are in almost 2 years ago when I was pregnant with our son.  That move was only a couple cities over (moving to a bigger house).  We have already decided if this move does happen we're gonna pay someone to do the moving because it sucked so much last time!
