The Nursery Thread

Now that we have moved/ will be moving shortly to the 2nd trimester, I’m sure a lot of us have started thinking about the nursery. Are you decorating a nursery for baby or an area of your room? Theme ideas? Do you already have everything planned out or just starting to come up with ideas? Share it all here!

  • I’m still stuck on where in this house the baby is going to sleep. I’m leaning towards a bassinet in our room until MH gets back. I’d prefer to decorate a nursery but that may have to wait
  • Excited for this thread!

For me, we keep baby in the room as long as possible (DD is still with us and once she is 3 she is out, which is soon!), I just find a sense of comfort in that and if everyone is getting the sleep they need then it works out for us.

In reality I'll be decorating two rooms:

    1) is DD's new room, she got to pick out her new bed (tufted velvet upholstered sleigh bed, it's super cute! arriving end of august) and bedding. Also a some of the furniture I know the grandparents will get for her bday. I think I will get a classic wall decal. Her bed is light pink, maybe something with flowers for the wall, I'll have to wait on some ideas from this thread.

    2. Re-decorating the area of our room that DD now take's up. Her crib transforms into a toddler bed, so we will put it back to a crib. I want to get a used Halo Bassinet since I like having the baby in a bassinet for the first couple of months. Since we also were team green the first time, I have some more neutral bedding and once baby is born then I can either use DD's flowery bedding if baby is a girl or if it's a boy then I get to buy some specific colours I like. We won't be doing any theme though, maybe just adding some stick on wall decal's.

I'm actually more excited decorating DD's new room then anything else :P Can't wait to see your idea's!
  • @c1kc1kpol1cn1k I’ll be decorating ds’ room as well. He’s currently in the bigger room so we will have to switch him. I think involving him in helping me pick out things for it will help ease the transition a little.
  • Were going to be moving house in spring next year, the house is a new build & will be turnkey. Up til that point (& possibly after depending on when its ready) the babies will be in with us. Dd is in her own room now so we will just get her some new furniture & use her existing furniture for the twins room.
  • @leprechaunlady I'm with you, DH and I will likely be moving in the late winter/early spring.

The apartment we have now is a third story walk-up without laundry in unit... not terribly practical for kids. We are looking to buy, but the real estate market is crazy where we live. I'm hoping we can find a good deal over the winter holidays or in early 2020, as the market tends to cool down at those times.

I have a pretty clear idea of what I want for the nursery and I'd love to get it all put together asap, but it would be pretty pointless if we plan to move. Plus, baby will be in her bassinet in our room for several months anyway.

We are also building a house and are probably moving in January sometime after this baby is born. s/he will stay in a basinet in our room for the first year.
We are planning DD's "big girl room" for the new house. She wants "a pink room with fairies".
I havent really thought about the nursery yet because I want to find out the sex first.  I do know I want a nice big comfy chair since we spent a lot of time in the one we have for DD, but it is not very comfortable.   DDs nursey was/is woodland themed with pink accents.
  • Our nursery is going to be in our open area room on the second floor. It was originally a 3rd bedroom but the owner before us knocked down all the walls and opened it up into like a workspace/living room. We've rearranged the furniture so we have a good area to put the crib and the table that we already have up there will be the changing table. IDK if we have a solid theme but the crib stuff is going to be either owls (I work at Temple U so that's totally fitting) or cute woodland animals. The room is already painted a super light light light almost white blue. IDK if we are going to change the wall color up there (plus I gotta finish painting the kitchen anyway). Both moms are giving us the wall decorations from my nursery and DH's (we were both only's so our parents kept a lot of stuff). And I'll probably take some of the sheets even if they don't match the decor because a lot of it only saw a few years of action and is still in really good shape! As for other decore IDK but we have time to figure it out. Or least that's what I keep telling myself.

  • I'm a Harry Potter fanatic (I read the series once a year) and so that's my obvious go to. I feel it can be gender neutral in case we are having one of each gender, but DH is VERY against it. I think I might go more neutral colors with HP accents. Or maybe just go for a storybook theme in general. I'm so indecisive as it is and pregnancy is making it worse!

I'm also nervous to have two babies sleeping in our room the first few months, so we really haven't decided what to do. @kbrown2385 and @leprechaunlady are you having separate rooms for each baby or one nursery? We told a few friends we were doing one nursery and they were really surprised we wouldn't keep them in separate rooms.

  • @amb0924 I love HP too and I thought about doing that as a theme but MH wanted something more general, like jungle, versus a fandom thing. Also, I'm not having twins but I don't see why you'd keep them in separate rooms in the beginning. I'm sure when they're older they'll want their own, but that's years away. The only potential problem I could see is that if they're in the same room one could wake the other up and then you have 2 crying babies. But even if they're in different rooms a crying baby may still easily wake the other. You know what I've realized though? Everyone has an opinion, so just take it all with a grain of salt and trust your own instincts and choices. It's YOUR life, you do it how YOU want.
  • @amb0924 not having twins but @peppyj9 is so right. Everyone will have an opinion. Having a new baby let alone twins is uncharted territory no matter what. Do what work's for you guys :)
  • @amb0924 we will be putting them together for the first while, a lot of people I know with twins say they fuss & get upset when theyre separated in those early days & will be more content together.
It then depends on the sex for when theyre older. if theyre the same sex, they’ll share a room but if theyre a boy & girl then the girl will share with dd & the boy will have his own room.
  • @amb0924 we will be keeping them together for at least a few years. In the beginning, I’ve read, they do better sleeping together so they will be together in our room as well as when they transition to the nursery.
  • @amb0924, I'm having a single, but the people I've known with twins say they do better together and the separation is hard on them. I have a friend with 2yo twins, and to this day, one will climb into bed with the other. Even with boy/girl twins, they should be fine for a few years. PS. My BFF and I read the series every year, beginning Sept 1 at 945am (for Platform 9 and 3/4). We've been doing it since 2016.
  • @FyreFlyeRush THAT IS SO COOL! what a great idea! I usually start it right around this time so I can read it on the beach during the weekends. I don't care how many times I've read it, I always find something new to discover each time I open the series. I hope my kids love it just as much as I do one day
  • @amb0924 @FyreFlyeRush I read It yearly as well. I’m impatiently waiting for my son to be ready to read them with me. If he doesn’t like them, I don’t know what I’ll do with myself 🤣.
  • Do any of you HP nerds listen to HP and the Sacred Text Podcast?!?! It's sooo good!

  • @kbrown2385, I read the Kindle In Motion edition to my son when he was five. Since the majority of pages are animated in some way, and all are illustrated, it helped focus his attention. I read UP TO a chapter a night. Took a LONG time, but it was worth it. We did the same with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Hobbit (skipping the boring parts).
  • @stashattack nope but I’ll be adding it to my library! I hadnt heard of it!

@FyreFlyeRush he’s seen some of the movies and thought they were “so cool” so I have some hope he will enjoy it. I love reading and I have so many books waiting to read with him like the Chronicles or Narnia, a few Roald Dahl books, scary stories to tell in the dark and more. I really can’t wait for him to be old enough lol. We read every night at bedtime already, so adding in my favorites is something I’ve been looking forward to.
  • @stashattack
no!! but i'm going to start listening on my way to work! thanks =)
  • Y’all are welcome!! They are about to start book six. Once they finish imma start over agin cuz I started I think half way through book 4.

What types of rockers are you guys choosing for the nursery? We had a glider and footrest set with ds and I kind of hated it. I never used the footrest so it sat in the corner. Anyone using an old school rocking chair? A rocking armchair? Looking for different options.

  • @kbrown2385 We got the Ikea Poäng in the rocker version with a leather cushion. It made wiping up spit up milk or other messes so easy! We did have the foot rest for DH to use, but I didn't use it.
