December 2019 Moms

The name thread!

Has anyone started thinking about names yet?  I have had a list on my phone for a couple of years but just cautiously approached DH a couple of days ago to start the conversation. He takes FOREVER to think about things and form an opinion!
What names are on your list?

If we have a girl we’ve tossed around:
Angelica Faith (DH’s Mom who passed away over 30 years ago was named Angela)
Annelise Hope (my Mom’s name is Ana)
    Either would be nicknamed Ellie
Our DD is named after my grandmother, Evangelina Grace, nicknamed Evie

For our 1st pregnancy we had agreed to the name Zakary Josef if we had a boy but DH no longer likes it.

So far we can only agree on Max for a boy but i like Maxwell and DH hates it, and he likes Maximus but I hate it. Boy names are tough for us.

  • If it's a girl Sofia Rakel and if it's a boy Christopher David.
  • @klmcguire ds middle name is Harrison so I love that one. Owen was on my list as well, dh vetoed it☹️
  • We like Walter George for a boy, Ophelia Jane for a girl.

Our older kids are Charlotte Grace and Otto Jacob.
  • @ale9687 that’s a really neat piece of family history. What a great choice.
  • Leo Thomas if we have a boy--Leo is a family name on his side. It's his favorite uncle's first name, and his deceased father's middle name. Thomas after my dad.

Clara Rose if we have a girl...no family connections, we just love the name. I was originally thinking Clara Jean (Jean is my middle name and my mom's middle name and a great-aunt's first name), but I just keep going back to Rose...I love the sound of it. Looks like we're dropping the family names if we have a girl, haha.
  • @ladybird_ladybird I LOVE the name Charlotte Grace! That's so pretty! Charlotte was on my short list for a while, but DH wasn't sure how he felt about it, so we ended up vetoing it.
  • @klmcguire All great names! I particularly like Owen...that was on my boy list for a while, but when DH requested Leo for his uncle/dad, it was pretty much impossible to turn him down, it was too sweet. But Owen is still on my list for a second boy someday, if we have one.

The only girl names that I had on my list were Ava, and Isabelle/Isabella, with the middle name Quinn.

But since we're having a boy, I have floated the name Christopher by DH.  We really like the name Finn as well, but we now know two dogs named Finn, so that may have ruined it for me.

This will be boy number four, and I'm regretting using up some of my favourites on middle names!

Finn is on our short list for a boy. We also loved Weston when our DS was born, but chose something else. We have good friend’s with a Wesley now, so we won’t be using Weston if this baby is a boy.

  • @rjgmcmanus I love the name Clara Rose!! It sounds so sweet and pretty!
  • @sunshineandlemons and @ladybird_ladybird I love the name Charlotte!  I have a Charlie though, so that immediately took the name off our girl list!

@McKBaby I do still really love Finn.  My MIL gave us such a hard time over our youngest son, Kai, having a one syllable name, I'm not sure I want to deal with that again!  I think I'll be keeping my mouth shut about names this time around until after the birth certificate is signed.

  • We’re team green - so having to come up with both options is the first time we’re like oh shit, haha. I’ve had a girl name that MH agreed to for as long as I can remember... boy names are tough. I have yet to suggest a name MH likes. 🙈
  • Arielle was #2 on our list when we had our daughter. Nickname would be Elle. Middle name we are not sure would like to pull something from the family line but not sure what fits with it.

A boy we have always struggled DH likes the names from older generations like Reuben, Abraham (not Abe), etc. There is nothing wrong with older gen. names just not my style being our first 2 have more modern names.

  • @ktmaesim I agree, Sylvia sounds adorable!  I also like Elizabeth... it’s my daughter’s name. So timeless!

@holly321 I have a friend who has a little girl Eloise- they call her Louie for short and it is so cute!
  • So far we’ve only decided on a boy name- James Aloysius. James for my husbands father and Aloysius for my grandfather/dads middle name.

playing around with Layla or Charlotte for a girl.

i think we are waiting to find out sex of the baby so we have lots of time to decide!!
  • We're pretty traditional with our names. DS is Alexander Spencer and DD is Elizabeth Hazel.

So far we like Penelope or Catherine for a Girl. I like Charlotte but DH does not.
For boys we like James, Charles, William, or Theodore.

I wish I liked my side of the family's names -- but I'm stuck with things like Virgil or Barbara, or Rueben or Albert. Not a fan.  :D  Spencer and Hazel are both from DH's side of the family.

  • @ktmaesim my Elizabeth is called Ellie! But we're thinking when she's older calling her Betty. I love the other nicknames for Elizabeth besides the norms "Liz, Beth, etc." Bee is adorable!

  • @bakerstreetboys and @klmcguire - the husband struggle is so real! My husband is like a bit too easy going about finding names. I gave him a list of my top 45 names, names I have been slowly collecting since I was 16 and over analyzing. He vetoed 40 of them. It took him 2 minutes to veto 40 names I loved.

On the plus side we did find a name we both agree on! @CapricaAndrea - Ruby was our second favorite choice and I love that you are going with that if it's a girl!

We are not telling anyone the name until she is born but I do love seeing everyone else's ideas!

@ktmaesim - I love Sylvia nn Sylvie!!! So cute, not overused or uber popular and very retro-feminine!

  • I do have a rather big dilemma. I am a big supporter of gender equality, one might even call me a feminist (but not the extreme type). Because of this I hyphenated my last name instead of changing it when I married. My tough name choice is should we give our daughter both last names or just his? DH doesn't have a preference.

My last name starts with a D and his with a Z. They sound nice together so flow isnt an issue. I am leaning towards giving her both so she wont be stuck with a Z last name, it would start with a D. Z name kids are always the last in line or to be called in school. Some big employers even go through resumes starting at the beginning of the alphabet so Z names rarely get called in.

    Opinions?

It looks like Hubby and I actually agreed on a boys name! Shocker!

    Cody Joseph “CJ”
  • @mrszoobear my mom hyphenated her name, but my 3 sisters and I all just have our dad’s last name. I never felt odd having a different last name than our mom, but I also get your point. Also a business owner, and in my former role in corp America I never looked through resumes alphabetically.
  • @mrszoobear I kept my maiden name when I got married.  I would consider a hyphenated name for myself and my baby, but mine and my husband's names don't sound good together at all.  Since yours do, I say go for it!
  • @mrszoobear my sister and my BIL both took each others last names hyphenated (W.-J.) and both of their boys also took each last name. They all primarily use J. Because it’s an easier last name.
  • @mrszoobear I'd say if the hyphenated name isn't too awkward or long then give her both. She can always choose to go with just one when she's older.
Also speaking from a medical perspective, kids with a different last name than their parents can be a bit of an organizational nightmare in an office, especially if the parent who's calling doesn't actually specify that their child has a different last name. My mom works in a medical office and it's one of her biggest pet-peeves when parents call or leave a message and then get upset when she can't find their child's file. Not that it's a reason to choose one option over another, just something most people don't think about.
  • @mommato3ohio We are thinking of June for our baby’s middle name. I love it!
  • Would you associate the name Carlen/Carlin with male or female?
  • Think we're using Audrey for a girl but unsure for boy.
