The Great Question Thread!

Re: The Great Question Thread!

  • What do you guys think about having a doula the second time around? My friend is a doula and she was at my first birth.. I felt it was helpful having her there for extra support.. but it was still a little pricey to have her there. They say the second time around is usually faster and easier. Do you think a doula is still neccessary or would I be fine without?

@Niko1e I didn’t have a doula so I can’t comment from personal experience but my best friend was in the delivery room with me for my first and I can’t inagine doing it without her this time. My labor and delivery from to start to finish when the baby arrived was only 4 hours, and I still loved having her there. She was great support for both me and my husband. If your labor is similar to the first time around could you imagine her not being there? How was your significant other during labor? Maybe they will be fine helping you through this time. Go with your gut. Either way our bodies are amazing and will get us through it! :)
  • @septoctkids I’m shaking my fist at you and your 4h labor!! Mine was 25h! 😡🥴🥵 Waaaaahhh!!

@lillywonderland haha it was crazy fast! I bet your next labor and delivery will be much shorter. My labor was exactly like my moms first. When we called the hospital they told us not to come in yet, to labor more at home. Thank god we went in when we did or we would’ve had a baby in the car. I got the epidural just in time. I am so so nervous that I won’t have time to get the epidural this time. I will make sure we leave for the hospital the second I feel a contraction so I can get that thing in me. 😂
  • Bahahahah! @septoctkids Hopefully your second won’t be a car birth!! 😳 I’m definitely hoping that 2.0 will be quicker. DS stalled at like 8cm and that was terrrrrrrible. Good thing that kid is cute af, because I definitely would have returned him for delay of arrival. (I kid, I kid!)
  • @lillywonderland they make them cute for a reason, that’s for sure!! 😂
  • What other "pregnancy" apps is anyone using? Either trackers or photo ones or anything really
  • @Niko1e We had a doula for the first birth, and chose to skip it the second time around due time to money. We could afford it but didn’t feel like we really needed it since we had already been through birth once. It turned out to be just fine. The midwives and nurses were excellent there and helped us along, coaching me and my husband was there to support me.
  • @cheshyre319  I use the baby center app along with the bump. I love baby story for pics.
  • @cheshyre319-I love Ovia for their facts and fun. Also like baby center for weekly info.

Thanks! I'll definitely look at both of those!
  • cheshyre319 I have Tinybeans for photos to keep my family updated. So far it is just bump pics and U/S pics, but I will be adding photos of baby daily for them once it's here. I am wanting to keep my LO off of social media, and this app is supposed to be pretty safe.

  • @dahliasanddogs I LOVE Aeire (American eagle intimates brand) wireless bras, they are so so comfy, I have 6 now..just had to add a few in larger sizes. I will probably wear them for nursing too, they are comfy and easy to fold down
  • @TeacherMama7 I am so so big this time around (3rd baby). I looked 20 weeks at 10 weeks. I think I started wearing maternity pants at 8 weeks...the bloating is insane!! I am 17 weeks now and I look about 25 weeks. I was feeling ridiculous buying and wearing maternity pants so early, but then I realized how silly that was! I needed to be comfortable!
  • Ftm here! I'm struggling bc I usually don't wear tight fitting clothes, but a lot of maternity clothes are tight and of course emphasize the belly. How do you smooth out the button/zipper/pant line so you get the smooth pretty pregnant look not the omg your pants are up over your belly button look.
  • @nightdreamr13 When you switch to maternity pants it will be perfectly smooth thanks that gloriously comfortable spandex.  In the meantime, I'm over here rocking a lumpy bump, too, with my pants unbuttoned under a doubled-over belly band under a shirt.  Ugh.
  • @nightdreamr13 embrace the full panel maternity pants, girlfriend! It'll smooth out that bump and make it looks super cute. Plus, they are basically sweatpants and sooo comfy.

  • @mamaber2204 @zuuls_mom thanks! I have some maternity jeans but they're hand me downs and don't fit too wonderfully. They keep falling down and are a tad short. My regular work pants are stretchy so they fit quite nicely but that line with the tight shirts just isn't attractive and makes me very self conscious. Guess it comes down to sucking it up and spending the money for new maternity pants, like it or not...
  • @nightdreamr13 Try Target for maternity jeans - the price is right and I was able to find a pair I've been wearing non-stop on the clearance rack (in store) for $8! I'm actually a big fan of their "post pregnancy" jeans right now (currently ~16.5 weeks pregnant) because they fit like regular jeans but the waistband is extra stretchy without any of the annoying panels.
  • @nightdreamr13 I only have non-maternity workout leggings because they're spandex anyway, so why waste the money?  But that means a line across the belly until belly gets too big and pants go under it.  Right now I look ridiculous in my spandex.  Like pants stretched up over my belly with my shirt (that's usually loose around the midsection) looking somewhat tight showing off an awkward ridge.  Yuck.
  • I'm 15 weeks and regret getting the home doppler - can't hear a thing. But I know everything is ok based on office visits. It is torture. Burn it! :)
  • @telekathy Doppler torture is so real. My placenta is on top, so even at the doctor they can’t find a heartbeat with one. On one hand it’s nice seeing my babe more often on US but on the other hand there is a lingering doubt in the back of my mind at all times.

Has anyone got a 4D/HD gender reveal scan at 15 weeks? I’m obsessing over the sex because I’m convinced it is a girl. I need to get a reality check in case it is another boy. SneakPeek failed twice, so I’m giving the elective US a go. If you had one, was it accurate?

@duewithpu2 My best friend did a gender scan at one of those places at 15 weeks. They had her go back a second time because the baby wasn’t cooperating. They told her they thought boy but had her go back. At the second visit they confirmed it was definitely a boy. Come her 20 week anatomy scan she was told the baby was most definitely a girl! So crazy!! I’ve heard stories like that but never from someone so close to me. So the ultrasound tech at her 20 week scan said the genitals are often swollen around the 15ish week mark and the parts can still be confused for boy/ girl. Now I’m sure these stories are few and far between but I’d be weary!! Lol
  • @septoctkids ugh!! Looks like I just need to be patient. My midwife said she wants the anatomy scan at 22 weeks rather than 18-20 😩
  • @duewithpu2 My ANATOMY SCAN was wrong with DS so my faith in most things is shot lol
  • @mommyshark13 wow! Did you find out it was wrong ar delivery? Or at another u/s before then?
  • @mommyshark13 OMG this same thing happened to a friend of mine! She was told she was having a girl and at delivery they were like SURPRISE, IT'S A BOY! haha

My sister was also supposed to be a boy, but this was back in the 90's so I can understand that a bit more.

  • @zuuls_mom My sister was supposed to be a boy, too!  Also in the '90s.  My whole room got redecorated for a baby boy and - tada - she was a girl.
  • I’ve heard if they tell you it’s girl, there’s always a chance it’s a boy, but vice versa the odds are lower.
  • This news is all terrifying Hahahaha
  • @duewithpu2 What reason did the Dr. give for 22 weeks? I was tempted to wait that long so they could for sure see everything but not sure I can wait that long. It's going to be my only ultrasound.
  • @janat1717 she didn’t really she just said that’s the best time to see when they’re big enough but not too big to be squished.
  • @kgg2241 We had NO clue until delivery. I thought the nurses were joking 😂

So my OB was telling me recently “they” changed the passing score for the one hour glucose test. They meaning whoever makes these decisions for pregnant women lol. I should have asked what it was but didn’t think of it until I left. The passing score was anything below 140 with my last pregnancy. Any one know that they standard is now?
  • @septoctkids I had one around 8 weeks this time, and the top limit for passing was 134 mg/dL - I didn't register that as being any different than with DS (he's 19 mos) but also don't remember what it was then!
  • While we're on the topic of GD... Is anyone more or less at risk for getting it? Could it literally happen to anyone?
  • @nomangos23 WebMD has a nice little list of who could be at higher risk of getting GD.

  • @ternsetc thanks! My level was 136 with my ds and I passed. Nervous this time around! The only thing that puts me at higher risk according to that web md chart is I’m over 25. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼

@nomangos23 as I understand it, GD could happen to literally anyone (and that's why everyone gets tested), but as @lillywonderland says there are some things that bump up the risk a little.
ETA: @septoctkids good luck! My weight was 1 point into overweight (based on the BMI chart) and they sent me for an early one both pregnancies (I'm over 25 so I guess that's 2 for me on that list :D); I actually failed the 26 week 1 hour test by 2 points with DS, but passed the 3 hour no problem. Fingers crossed you pass the 1 hour!
  • I feel f*cking old because being “over 25” supposedly puts you at a higher risk according to that WebMD chatty chart. WHO THE EFF HAS A KID BEFORE 25?!?

-signed lillywonderland who was LITERALLY GALAVANTING around EUROPE at 25.

(Also, I mean absolutely no offense to those who have had kids before 25, I just can’t imagine it for myself!)
