Also, I typically don't discuss politics except with close friends or my husband. I have a zero tolerance policy with my mother. The minute she starts with anything political, even jokes, I ignore her. We don't have the same views, and she can't understand why I don't agree with her. She doesnt agree with me, but she can't have a civil rational discussion about it. And she believes a lot of what she reads on the internet without fact checking or reading anything other than one aource.nwhen she tries to have a conversation after I've said "mom, I'll not going to discuss politics with you," it usually ends with her crying because she "just doesn't understand." I keep my beliefs off of Facebook because of my husband's job mostly. And also because on the internet most people are set in their ways and are just looking for an argument. 🤷
So my counter-UO is that (covers face in shame) I actually love presidential primary season, and have since I was a kid. I have legit reasons (like energized conversations like this one! Which is amazing! And generally ideas seem to sizzle and spark during this open season) and terrible ones (I get a kick out of political theater, and the disingenuity of historical/political rhetoric is one of my professional fields of study bc I loooove it).
I thought Trump’s election would shatter my enjoyment of politics but I think it has energized a lot of people to think critically about the system, and I’m ever hopeful that this will yield long term positive results—across the whole political spectrum! (I myself am as left as left goes, and my activism and volunteer work are with similar ppl, but I believe that a more informed and involved community of all ideologies is a healthier community) (though one scary thing that’s really hard to reconcile is the vast amount of misinformation out there unfortunately).
I know too many people on both sides who vote solely based on 1 thing (pro life or pro choice seems to be the most common). Don’t get me wrong, it’s important, but is that really the reason to choose the best person to be POTUS?! What about foreign policy, trade, economics, education, the environment, healthcare just to name a few.
I lurked on this thread but didn't jump in yesterday. However, I would probably echo just about all of @suzycupcake's sentiments. I spent the first 20 years of my life in the most densely-populated district in Texas, and as an adult living in another state with a dramatically smaller population, I'm thankful for the electoral college.
Anyway. Mainly just wanted to jump in and share my UO... if Biden runs, I will change my party affiliation in a heartbeat. I. Love. Uncle. Joe.
I have to agree with what every one is saying I am very impressed by how civil this conversation is staying, so @suzycupcake to answer your question. I tend to use the descriptor conservative and Republican interchangeably. That's mainly because I feel like Republican has a practical aspect of the fact I choose to call myself that, it affects which primaries I can vote in. However, I feel like conservative and liberal have mostly lost their meaning. To think that we can take a large pool of issues, each of which has a broad spectrum of opinions attached to it, and force every person to fit into one of 2 options is ridiculous. Using conservative in the traditional sense I am very conservative in my home life, areas outside of politics, for example I believe that people should not engage in premarital sex, I believe that student learn better if they are not in a co-ed environment. However, there are things I believe, which are influenced by my religion, but some would see as more liberal. For example I believe that everything we own was given to us by G-d, and he expects us to use it to help others. That means money, time, talents, all of that should be used to help people in need, and the broader community.
my belief in the bible is a huge reason why I lean more liberal on social issues. Treat your neighbor as you wish to be treated.... have you ever washed someones feet, it is a moving experience to serve someone in that way. Though not having a balanced budget drives me crazy. We should not do things we can't pay for. The average american can live that way and our government shouldn't either.

@Beauxbaton@zamora_spin, you are both wrong. There is nothing like a bowl of noodle, cheese and ketchup, it is my ultimate comfort food, but the only thing that belongs on french fries is techina or cheese.
@Beauxbaton@zamora_spin, you are both wrong. There is nothing like a bowl of noodle, cheese and ketchup, it is my ultimate comfort food, but the only thing that belongs on french fries is techina or cheese.
I did not even know there were people in the world who would eat ketchup on noodles (yuck) but not on regular ketchup bearing foods like french fries. What about hamburgers, do you put ketchup on a hamburger?
@zamora_spin, all my OUs are coming out this thread, I won't have anything left for future weeks. I do not eat hamburgers. Before I got married I refused to eat anything with chopped beef, DH has been slowly bringing me around, but he hasn't changed my opinion on hamburgers yet.
@mrosek91 So I don't eat meat (except some fish) and therefore don't eat ground beef. But I eat veggie burgers of all types, so not eating ground beef is no excuse for not eating hamburgers.
eta I am like whatever about the political/electoral college stuff but getting pretty worked up about people's ketchup preferences
I prefer one-issue voters to no voters. At least they have picked something they are passionate about and are trying to represent. Yes they should be more educated on how that decision impacts all areas, but better than not voting at all IMO.
@zamora_spin 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 I just laughed SO hard. Made my day.
Ketchup Belongs on French fries, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken fingers (if you don't have honey dill, or honey mustard available) and on top of meat loaf when cooking it.
Fries are also acceptable (and delicious) as poutine, with cheese curds and hot gravey.
When we were little, my sister used to put ketchup on her Mac and cheese, (and mix it up, making this disgusting, wet mushing sound) and it grossed me out so hard core, I would have to leave the kitchen haha.
@oklahomak I also love me some JB! I hope he runs! When I look at the current field I think he’s the most middle of the road and most likely to take down 45.
@database6 I can’t decide if I agree a 1 issue voter is better than a non-voter. In theory, yes, the more who vote the better and we should encourage all those eligible to exercise their right to do so. However, an uneducated voter can be a dangerous voter. Knowledge is power.
Mac and cheese, button hot dogs (hot dogs cut small and crisped on a skillet), and ketchup are delicious together and an ultimate childhood comfort food. Also, might be my dinner very soon.

Ketchup only belongs on fries...although I at least understand the appeal of it on burgers, dogs and nuggets. DS(2) will put it on EVERYTHING. A few months ago he had a meltdown until I gave him ketchup for his french toast sticks, which he devoured.

@zamora_spin, they sell the "fancy" veggie burgers like mushroom risotto, or BBQ, those I eat plain. I hope we can still be friends, although to be honest I was expecting a bigger fallout from my no premarital sex stand, than my food preferences. This thread is now making me crave mac and cheese, the right way, with ketchup.
Edited to say I drink coffee with 2 sweet 'n' low packets, and 2 things of coffee mate, or mixed with a packet of hot cocoa mix.
I'm dying at these ketchup opinions. @mrosek91 I'm going to have to agree with @zamora_spin on this one, I'm pretty grossed out by that description of a bowl of noodles and ketchup. But, I should confess we only have packets of ketchup in our house and those are for guests. We don't eat it. I also don't eat ground beef, so my veggie burgers get barbecue sauce. @chillycanadian you had me until the ketchup meatloaf crust...but I still like you @mrosek91 fall out from no premarital sex? People are offended by that?
I'm shocked and so delighted by how civil this discussion has been! These past two years have brought out the worst of both sides of every issue and it makes me SO sad. I was raised with a liberal leaning mother and a conservative leaning father--and my grandma used to say she voted to cancel out my grandpa. It still shocks me that people feel like you can't love/respect/be friends with someone with completely opposite views than you. I guess I identify as more liberal because of social issues--education, health care access, comprehensive sex ed, etc. I work with a large refugee and immigrant population as well as a majority minority (is that a thing? We really don't have a majority ethnicity and it's amazing) and many of our families are struggling to get by. They truly work multiple jobs and want their kids to do well in school and in life, but are strapped for time and money. I don't think either party has a great solution for any of it, but a lot of the anti-immigrant and anti-refugee rhetoric and fear mongering breaks my heart. I've sat with 5 year olds who cower under tables because they're terrified of this new place and no one speaks their language or who won't leave their teacher because their mom told them that she was safe so they had to stay with her and listen. Second graders who won't line up after recess because they've never lived somewhere where it's safe to run and play outside and they're so sad when recess ends. Students who miss their homes and talk about fleeing over the mountains, walking for days and openly wonder about seeing relatives again--the oldest students I have are 9 at the end of the year. And despite all this within weeks or months, they're chatting with friends in English, reminding others to follow the rules and line up at recess, and you're usually unable to pick them out of a sea of other happy, thriving students. Don't get me wrong, of course there are exceptions and there's a lot of work we need to do on public education and ensuring legal, safe immigration, but oh my goodness, the promise that it holds is worth all that work a million times over. I also think of how I used connections to get into my RE and skip a couple months of waiting, spent hours on the phone to get access to better doctors, tests, etc, requested a specific hospital when my daughter needed it, all because I have the access, privilege, education and time to do so, I wonder what I would do we were forced to flee for our lives. I feel very lucky to have ended up here every day.
I too was grossed out by the ketchup in the noodles. I only like ketchup on a burger and that is it. Nothing else. I can’t even stand the smell of it on anything else.
They had burgers at school today. I thought of everyone bc I, normally a non ketchup person, slathered my burger with ketchup to make the bun softer. I was so happy that the chef even had an allergy safe bun for me, but those allergen free breads need a little help to be palatable lol. Ketchup did the trick and I thought of you guys haha

To be fair, that's absolutely true, and I agree. I was just raised by one-issue voters (and that issue was entirely self motivated being taxes) that sometimes I just wish people would think more about broader impact of their vote!
This reminded me also.. that the other day we were out for breakfast and my husband got hash browns which he put ketchup on, my DD had pancakes and inherited his love for ketchup, and stuck a piece of pancake in it. It was a big NOPE for her, so if you were on the fence about pancakes and ketchup, I would pass if I were you.

I went and had fries with ketchup for lunch. Also a fish sandwich. I enjoy Lent because many fast food chains temporarily have fish sandwiches that are gross and delicious.
Me returning to the thread hoping that many of the new comments continue to be about ketchup and not being disappointed...
@Avrilmai@mrosek91 For some reason I can understand not liking ketchup at all better than I can understand only liking it on foods that don't commonly go with ketchup. @mrosek91 I mean, it doesn't bother me that some people don't approve of premarital sex. That is an individual belief that anyone is entitled to. I don't love one of the outgrowths of that belief, which is abstinence only sex education.
@mrosek91 I, for the most ppart, don'tcare what kind of beliefs someone has. But I don't particularly think laws should be based on some people's moral convictions. Like it's totally fine if someone doesn't want to have sex before marriage (for whatever reason) but I don't think we should make a law saying sex before marriage is illegal. Not saying that's what you were saying, just using it as an example. I'm mostly a "live and let live" type of person. You live your life in whatever manner you want, and I'll live mine. I can still be friends with people who have been different beliefs than me, as long as my friends don't make me feel like a terrible person and they don't lecture me then I'm Golden.

But I'm not a fan of the ranch packet dinners. Why do pork chops and potatoes need to be covered in dry ranch? That's just weird to me.
Vinegar can get far far away from my fries.
One of my earliest pregnancy cravings was ranch epecially carrots dipped in, but I’m not normally a fan.
