  • @mkrel same here, except last night I went to bed when I put our one year old down at 7:00 p.m. No shame.

I was so absent last week. I had a work conference and no computer access. I HATE bumping on my phone. Now I'm back at work and ready to procrastinate.

  • @EmilyA724 If your husband is anything like mine, he has not done any of his own research or reading on milestones and where your DD should be.  There are things that my husband thinks are "so advanced' when they are totally normal for my daughter's age.  I certainly think an apology is in order from him though.  He should be so thankful that you keep up with her development and are advocating for her.  Also, I'm glad you got the referral and hope that PT can work to catch her up!
  • @hey_clever_girl I started making a labor and delivery Spotify playlist already, and it’s bringing me so much joy. Why is playlist making such a high??! @EmilyA724 Janelle appears on my L&D playlist... Pynk and Electric Lady
  • @mrosek91 our prek cutoff is 1 Sept. We were shooting for an aug baby because of that. If it didn't happen, we were gonna wait a few months to try again so we didn't have the oldest kid in the class.
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • @EmilyA724 omg they are so clueless. I take my oldest to Occupational therapy weekly, play therapy bi-weekly, and just got him a 504 plan at school. I do so much of this on my own that DH is just so out of the loop and doesn't understand why we do this or think that our son needs the help. We had a serious come to Jesus talk a couple of months ago and I think something finally clicked. But it has been a huge stressor and annoyance in my life.
  • Baby is the size of a peach. I’m the size of a watermelon. People just CANNOT believe we don’t know if it’s a boy or girl yet 🙄🙄🙄.  I’m chalking it up to so many people finding out the gender through genetic testing these days and not the fact that I look like the Goodyear blimp.
  • @sourlemon - That's interesting.  Our cutoff is also Sept 1, but we are likely going to parochial school, and they often given summer birthdays (June, July, August) the "gift of time," so our August baby will actually not be the oldest in K if we hold them a year.

  • @peachy0709 I'm a July baby and loved being towards the young end...mainly later in life because I graduated HS at 17 and college a few months after turning 21. I felt like i got a head start on my career and retirement savings. But I've been an "old soul" since I was young and always looked long term.

My mom also liked that I was not 18 as a senior in high school because she still had a say in my life. My older brother was a December baby and turned 18 half way through his senior year and shit hit the fan.

Of course my soon to be middle kid is a December baby so I'll get a bit of both. My oldest kid is a may baby so she'll graduate HS about a week before she turns 18 so that worked out!
    DD1 5/23/14, DD2 12/5/16   Baby #3 on the way!

  • Since I’m due Aug 31 and the cutoff here is Sept 1, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately too. I was one of the youngest in my grade growing up, which wasn’t fun when it came to milestone birthdays or getting a drivers license but otherwise wasn’t a huge deal. I think I would prefer for my kid to be the oldest than the youngest in their grade, especially if it’s a boy since they *tend* to mature later than girls. But paying for daycare an extra year is no fun, and this kid and its future sibling could end up a grade level closer than they really are in age. Of course if I’m even a little late that decision is made for me.
  • @EmilyA724 no but I have several Janelle songs on it!!! 😍😍

  • It never crossed my mind to hold back my late July birthday kid. Although he’s one of the youngest in his class he thrives academically and socially. The December birthday kid probably could have used another year to mature. I wouldn’t worry about it until you see how they progress through preschool/ daycare and make the decision then. Too many other things to think about now!
  • One thing I am not looking forward to about the August birthday is the decision about whether or not to send this little one to kindergarten at 5 or 6. Our state used to have a December 1st cut off date, which was WAY too late IMO but now that it is September 1st, a lot of summer and even spring birthdays are choosing to hold back. Personally I think most kids are ready if they are 5 by the start of K, but we will play it by ear with this one's maturity. My others are January and April bdays so we have not had to make this decision before. Although kindergarten is different now, the expectations in DDs class for math, reading and writing are more comparable to 2nd grade expectations from my childhood.

  • Add me to the list of people thinking about school year cut-offs. Our cut-off date is Aug. 1, and my OB just informed me that twins arrive, on average, at 36 weeks...which would be a late July birthday. So on one hand I want them to grow and thrive inside me for as long as possible...on the other hand, I would love to have them arrive before Aug. 1 so I have the option of starting them in school when they’re 5. Ideally, the cutoff date would change to Sept. 1 but I have no say in that and I don’t think it’s going to happen.

  • My oldest has a September 1 birthday and cut-off is September 30. We sent her to kindergarten young (a few weeks before she turned 5) at a private daycare/kindergarten program. She's behind, so she'll be going to kindergarten again at the local public school. I'd prefer to hold them back before there's a negative stigma.

My 2nd child and soon to be 3rd child all have summer birthdays and will probably do the same with them. Give them a trial year kindergarten and let the teacher decide what's best.
  • They don’t have this cutoff in Ontario which is where we will likely be by then. Children can start school the year they turn 4 with the cutoff being December 31 (same as when I was a child). You have the option of course but by the time they are 6, they must be in grade 1. I guess it’ll depend on the child and how much they can handle it. I was 4 in kindergarten but I was an advanced kid. Also being a November or December baby is so late so that would also be something to consider vs. August and September seems earlier to me. Lol I’m just rambling here.

  • I THINK for this baby we will do private K (or "Transitional K" is what they call it at our preschool) for a year before Kindergarten.  The transitional K is still less than private school which is where my kids will go, so it works out.

  • My DDs bday is 4 days after the cutoff here, and her pre-K recommended we test her to get her in kindergarten early. We decided not to. We will likely send this LO to school on schedule, but would hold back if had concerns. Will have to wait and see.

@wabash15 Yummy Mummies is the MOST ridiculous show. I’ve watched it a couple of times, and my mouth is just open in shock the entire time. I feel like most of them aren’t bad, but the Louis Vuitton lady seems crazy. I need to watch more, definitely good ole trashy tV.

  • @AKuzReve That’s the way it was (is?) when I started school in Manitoba. That’s why it boggles my mind that my August babies won’t be “ready” for kindergarten when they’re month away (or less) from turning 5. I’m already scheming ways around it...but it will probably involve private school tuition 😫

  • I didn’t really think about repeating Kindergarten if LO isn’t ready for first grade yet. Does anyone know if there is normally a fee or can you just choose for your kid to repeat it (also based on teacher’s recommendation)?
  • @aecm - I don't know about where you are, but all the private schools here are the opposite - they are MORE likely to hold a kid back than start them young. Just something for you to start inquiring on - I would have never guessed that when I started the whole "where will my kids go to school" hunt.

  • @dogmomma096 for public school they should just be able to repeat...that is how it is around here. For private I am sure there is a charge .

I am thankful that our public school offers a young 5s program with a cut off date of 12/31 (K cut off is 9/1). Their day is structured the same, they even share lunch and recess times, it is just a less intense curriculum. Those kids then move up to K the following year. We have several friends in that class now, although they are all April to July birthdays where parents opted for a growth year.

  • I'm glad I'm the only one who is thinking about preK/K start times!  I feel slightly crazy because I haven't really even felt bonded with the baby yet, but I'm already worried how s/he will do socially/emotionally.  It probably doesn't help that I have a delightfully immature 3 year old (who turned 3 today *sob*) so it's hard not to assume being the youngest would be terrible for my next child.  I was the youngest in my K class and loved school and was just fine, but my October born brother really benefited from being the oldest. I agree @thirdtimesacharm2019 that it's so dependent on the kid--but I'm still worrying for some reason.  Kindergarten is SO much more intense than it use to be  :(
  • Off topic random. I came down with a cold a couple weeks ago and still have the lingering cough and occasional sneeze. If my bladder is not completely empty I am starting to pee myself when I cough or sneeze....its awesome, frickin 3rd baby.

Also, the kids have yet ANOTHER snow day today and it is not looking good for tomorrow. I am over it.

  • I hadn't even considered preK/K start times until I read through here. I don't have any school aged children, but I feel like if it looks like she isn't ready after her year of PreK or whatever, we'd just have her repeat before it even becomes a thing? Maybe I'm more laid back about it now only because I have zero experience with it.
  • @ash0625 I had no idea what I was starting, I really just meant it would be fun if my baby and my friends baby are in the same grade. My brother was held back in 1st grade although I think that was more learning disabilities rather than age (he has ADD), so it never occurred to me to not just start them at 5, and see what happens.
@Allycat11 I feel your pain! Kegels suck, but whenever I cough or sneeze I regret not being better about them. Feel better!! and good luck with all the snow.
  • @dogmomma096 I don't think it would cost at a public school. We are choosing to do kindergarten twice- private then public to avoid any classmates teasing her. Private is expensive...but we don't have kids to save money.
  • @aecm, still that way in Ontario so maybe the same for Manitoba? I feel like I’ve only ever heard of this in terms of the US but I could be wrong.

  • All of my kids will start kinder the first year they can. I was the second youngest in my class and never really thought about that said #4 will be the only one who will be barely give when they start. DS1 will be almost 6, DS2 and DD will both be 5.5ish when they go to kinder. DS1 will start this year and I'm a little afraid he will be behind because he didn't go to preschool. Bjt he's smart and I'm definitely not holding him back l. He was totally ready last year but his Bday is Sept 28 and the cutoff is Aug 31.
