I’m a health physicist. I used to work in the private sector and then jumped to the regulatory side almost 3 years ago. I’m primarily a license reviewer now
I am mostly a SAHM, but I also bookkeep for a few hours a week and nanny occasionally (teacher mom, so mostly in school service days and then now that they're divorced the occasional winter break and some summer stuff). I also own a small teething shop called Binky Beads 💚
TL:DR version - I was a molecular biologist. Now I am a SAHM.
DD version - I worked in academic research for 5 years (if you count the 2 years for my masters degree which I do lol). I studied a bacteria in graduate school and a malaria parasite for my big girl job. When we moved for my husband to start residency training I was already pregnant with DS so I didn’t try to find a new job. I’ve been a SAHM for 2 years and I love it. Even though I was working on pathogens with a lot of human significance, it wasn’t translational research. This means that anything I did was soooooo far removed from having any significance other than pushing the frontier of human knowledge forward a millimeter. Which is great. Don’t get me wrong, basic research is very necesary and important. But there is just a lot of failure that comes with research and it takes a toll on you when it feels like you are failing over and over on something that doesn’t seem to matter much. When I fail as a parent (which happens a lot lol) at least I am failing at something important? Gives me more gumption to dust off my boots off and keep going.
I’m a musician. I own a music school with 34~ teachers and 650~ students, teach piano and of course all the admin. I also write music and perform a lot; in fact I have my biggest release so far on Feb 23, which is for a 45 minute experimental soundtrack that I got grant funded to write last summer. ^_^ I really really love my career, and am so blessed to have such a great team and to live somewhere that supports the arts so readily.
I worked in the marketing department of an entertainment venue before “retiring” to be a SAHM. My husband owns his own company and I help out with that from time to time
I'm a copywriter! I worked at an ad agency, then switched to a jewelry company when we moved out of state for my husband's residency. I'm now a SAHM but I still freelance from time to time. Absolutely cherish getting to be at home with my DD but I miss going to work!
i’m in healthcare management; currently running operations for an intraoperative neuromonitoring and anesthesia entities, and consulting for a pain management group. i’m actually lowkey working on pivoting my career trajectory to healthcare law instead, so my fall 2019 might include both a baby & a law school admission~
I’m a senior VP at a software company. I head up the customer-facing organization. I love what I do but I would definitely consider being a SAHM if I could (this is our first). It’s just not an option for us as I’m the primary breadwinner.
@jenferlee82@zaraanity Me also! My hubby works Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30a-12p for the cultural arts division of our local city and he’s home Monday and Wednesday so he’s basically a SAHD. He loves it. I’m insanely jealous but it’s what has worked out for us.

@zaraanity so cool that you are so successful in the music business! I minored in music in college and I still play my clarinet every once and a while. It blows my mind looking at old sheet music from my recitals to think of what I used to he capable of lol.
I’m Mechancial engineer with a specialty in marine. I work at a ship yard and monitor repairs being done. Best part of work is getting to walk under cruise ships when they are in the yard.

I'm a nurse in a neuro/trauma ICU. I have the strangest job and deal with some characters, also some just amazing people too. I love the flexibility of nursing and my job but also wouldn't mind becoming a SAHM.
SAHM currently. I did tech support for most of a decade, but the whole... "company doesn't care enough to fix their problem, so I have to fix the same thing 90 billion times" thing was killing my soul.
I want to go back to school and get some certs and be a Data Analyst, though. I feel like I've missed the boat because I had to drop out before finishing my CS degree (Bad Things happened that were outside of my control), but analysis is absolutely my strength and the thing I enjoy doing the most, so it seems like a good fit for me.

I'm an immunologist but currently working in a neurodegenerative field as an operations manager of a core facility. It's amazing to see both sides of an issue - what the scientists want and what is feasible financially...
@jenferlee82 ooo, same position over here! I'm primary income, so DH will likely be a SAHD/dig further into our urban farming side-ventures!
That’s so great! We will probably both keep working - me because we need me to and him because he loves it. He is a college soccer coach and absolutely loves what he does, and he’s so good at it! His schedule is really flexible during the off-season, so that will be nice.
i think I need to know more about this urban farming adventure! I’m intrigued.

I love that!! I know what you mean though, DH will basically be home every day in the summer and I can already tell I will be suuuuuper jealous. Haha
I am a stay at home mom after being a member financial rep and financial counselor for a credit union. I loved my job but I love being home with my girls more 🙂
@jenferlee82 we are eco nerd musicians haha. We started going “zerowaste” about four years ago, and got really into subsistence gardening from there. So last summer we had three growing sites, separated by foods (our entire yard was tomatoes for instance), with the sole goal of seeing if we could provide enough for ourselves for winter. Short answer: yep! We even had some left to vend. So this summer we are going to join a small collective and split some farmers market booth costs and sell our extra produce!
We’re in Canada - the very cold part - so we are limited in what we can grow, and in how long our growing season is, so it’s a fun challenge!
@ceclarlinetlo I very much feel super lucky. I hope I can always do this... it’s very uncertain being self employed, especially in these kind of “end times” vibes haha. I love that you play clarinet, that’s an instrument I’ve never managed to coax anything musical out of 😂 challenging little fella!
@zaraanity That is so cool! I just started dabbling in gardening this last year and hope to reach a point where all or almost all of our produce comes from our own garden. I'm so impressed that you got there, especially with a limited growing season to boot.
@jenferlee82 there are still things we choose to buy! We just focus on the biggies that we eat (root veggies, tomatoes, etc) and grow those. I wanna try some indoor greenhouse greens this year and see if we can’t get some of those rocking year-round. Gardening is really fun, especially with a partner who’s into it!
@grapeskittles4lyfe Thanks! It’s rewarding to help so many families move towards self suffficiency but, as a lot of people who are in social services will tell you, it is often times draining and thankless. I enjoy what I do for the most part.
@klee0225 hey me too! Except those services are provided by the county in CA.
@jenferlee82 totally. it's a muscle you can build. Sometimes the satisfaction of the rewards starts to generate interest, or the quality time you get to spend, etc!
