@shamrocandroll I second guinea pig! Had one growing up and he had so much personality! They make different noises for different “moods” too! Mine squealed for carrots, would do low little grunts when he was happy, and would coo when he was really happy. Be aware- they live a long time for a small mammal. We got mine when I was in fifth grade, and lived 8.5 years!!
@shamrocandroll I had two rats in college - Fiona and Luanne. They were lovely, but just so you're aware, rats can have some serious health problems. Not really sure, but maybe some types are healthier than others?

@shamrocandroll I had a pet chinchilla growing up and I wouldn’t recommend them for something low maintenance. She was super skittish and would always run away and hide under stuff when I let her out of the cage. They are nocturnal, so they don’t really interact during the day. They need a large cage because they need to run around so much, and cleaning the cage was a PITA. I’ve heard good things about guinea pigs, though!

@SpongeWorthy A good friend of mine had a chinchilla and I totally agree. Plus, the mess from the dust baths are a pain and, while adorable, I don't think they have much personality.
@nomangos23 The longer lifespan is actually somewhat deterring me from a guinea pig. If I'm going to commit 5+ years to a pet, I'd prefer it to be a dog. I'm leaning towards a rat because a lot of people compare them to the intelligence of a dog, and I feel like committing to 2-3 years is more doable for us at this stage than 5+. Eventually I do want to get another dog, but not for a couple years.
